  • In this episode, we take an overlanding trip through southwestern Ohio. Our adventure takes us through Tar Hollow State Forest, Wayne National Forest, Zaleski Sate Forest, Hocking Hills State Park and the Vinton County unmaintained roads. While we were out, we also tried out the Bigfoot Bushcraft fire starter!

    I have lived in Ohio my entire life. Grew up in Logan (Hocking Hills region - now overrun with tourists, wouldn’t recommend). One thing about campgrounds in Ohio is that they usually have poorly kept bathrooms/showers but they always charge quite a bit for campsites. Pretty much every state outside of Ohio that I have camped at has had better facilities and charged less.

    This part of Ohio was once loaded with iron ore furnaces and was the world’s leading supplier of iron ore. There are many still standing around our home. I even have a book called “superior” which tells the story of this whole area and it’s iron ore days. It’s really neat and we have a lot of history of them in our history museum.

    Great video per usual! You were so close to all the unmaintained roads when you stopped at Tar Hollow. At least you were able to hit Sowers and Macedonia. There are so many more trails right there (from mild to wild).
    Next time, get a county engineer road map at the courthouse in McArthur. I’ve studied that map for way more time than I care to admit!
    Eastern Vinton / Western Athens has more sights to see (King Hollow, Moonville, old furnaces, etc) but less serious trails. Hunters Camp is a great camp spot.
    Southern Vinton / Eastern Jackson has some gems around Buckeye Furnace too.
    Glad you traveled up on our turf. Can’t wait to hit the KY trails later this year in our XJ.
    Keep up the great work.

    Glad you guys had fun, although I feel as you missed out on quite a few hidden gems. If you want to go back let me know as I'm from Vinton County and currently in Chillicothe. I would be happy to take you on the unmaintained township roads. You do need to be careful as some trails are fine, some are private property. I wouldn't recommend wheeling alone and while you have a very capable rig, you never know what you will get into.
    Also Mama Renee's is a good local place, but our favorite is the Lake Hope Lodge. It's the best place to eat in Vinton County.

    Very capable rig there and some pretty technical stuff toward the end there. Looks like a blast but one of the first rules of wheeling is, don’t wheel alone. Definitely drop that psi sooner. Look forward to seeing your next adventure.

    • @CoddiwompleOverland
      @CoddiwompleOverland  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the compliments. I understand the reasoning behind not wheeling alone as I have already defended my position on here in a previous comment. We had aired down to what the trail needed. The additional air down that was shown was the loose height.

    I used to go there really often just beware, there's some trails that belong to the power company and you will get tickets if caught. Half our club got tickets. Which was a shame because the no trespassing sign was only on the side that we exited!
    We quit going after the incident which was a shame as it was a fairly easy (stock vehicle) set of trails for beginners.

    Great video but I found myself thinking that you were out there alone what would you do if something happened. There are times I wheel alone but I will limit myself to places I know well and I have a 2 meter ham radio with the local repeaters programed into it. I know that wasn't what you all had planned at all with your friends having to go home. I would have done it too most likely but I would have been anxious.

    • @CoddiwompleOverland
      @CoddiwompleOverland  2 года назад +2

      Thanks! Yes we were out alone. But we were never in a situation that I didn't feel comfortable with. If something had went bad, we always carry 2 very advanced first aid kits. As far as calling for help, most of the trip we had cell signal, I also am a ham operator with 2 and 70 meter capabilities with all of the local repeater info at hand. In addition to that several people at home knew where we were by using the 360 app and lastly we always have our SPOT device with us. Being in the professions that we are in, we always plan for the worst and hope for the best!

    Great stuff man. That's the sort of thing I want to promote for my channel (jeepNdirt). East coast wheeling. We need more folks just looking around in their own backyard for stuff like this. With gas prices high, folks need to know they don't have to travel west for the big stuff. Just look around, places like AOP, Windrock, and many others not to mention all the National Forrest areas. Keep it coming. Can't wait to come across you guys sometime. God Bless you.
