As a martial artist who practices various disciplines, this video speaks to me in many leves. I believe that martial arts can make you quite aware of your body parts and its movements. It has helped me improve my awareness on myself as a living organism that wants to move forward aggressively; not only during battle but in life as well . Thank you for this wonderful video! The brain only does two things: regulation of hormones via the hypothalamus and movement of our muscles. Nearly every process in our brain ultimately finds some output through motor neurons stimulating the contraction of muscle fibers. Every behavior you exhibit, from putting on your running shoes to lifting a beer bottle to your lips, is the final motor output of all the activity occuring in your brain. If neural activity in the brain finds inadequate motor output, I believe it continues to feed back into the brain, modulating repeatedly until it ultimately manifests itself in neurotic behavior. I believe exercise is literally the gross release of psychic energy; a cleansing of the mind which prevents the development of neurosis.

Guys honestly, one day when I was about 6 or 7, I did about 30 push ups in a row in front of my family and they were So shocked and kept telling me how strong I was. It was like positive trauma for me. Nowadays people praise me for my physique and I’m always saying that it was literally just my mindset, I don’t even have to work out, I convinced my mind that I have one of the best bodies in the world and it came to life!!

This is very interesting. My dad told me I couldn't do certain things like ride dirt bikes or snowboard because I was out of shape. Pretty sure it was more just him stating a fact but I made it part of my identity that I am out of shape and it is very hard for me to gain muscle. If fixed this to a degree but I'm glad you wrote that comment in case I ever have kids who need to hear the right things.
I feel we have to have the correct philosophical inner core before we attempt to become successful at any goal we have in life. If our philosophical approach is lackluster, we our doomed to fail somewhere along the line in our personal missions in life, as when things get tough (and they will) its our philosophical strength that will help us soldier on through those hard times.
I've been lifting and eating consistently for over 3 years. Besides I have good genetics so now I'm shredded AF. The existencial pain is exactly as before. Only difference is that now I look cool in the beach for those 5 days a year.

I think this pain is eternal and not necessarily bad. Have tou tried to use your body to express other things than lifting? Dance, theatre, drawing, group sports, outdoor sports, so many things. It will not kill tbe existencial pain, but it's aways interesting to learn a new way to express yourself
Our body is an instrument built for adaptation. Introduce a stimulus, and the body will respond accordingly - skill, language acquisition, knowledge, etc. Garbage in, garbage out.

I can't express enough how valuable this channel is. I haven't watched a video yet that didn't leave me slack jawed, nodding my head in agreement the whole time. I had a Professor in college who was a feeble tiny old man. Yet whenever he spoke he would say such brilliant things, such wise thoughts, such illuminating conclusions, that to me he truly seemed like a giant. I was young, athletic and good looking and yet I always thought he was 1000 times closer to divinity that I ever was at that time. However I do believe that morbid obesity speaks volumes about the beauty or lack thereof of a mind.
Behaviour is the only reliable indicator of motivation. Don't look at what they say, look at what they do. The way a person does one thing is the way they do everything.
It's wild, I didn't know anything about body language until I was about 18-20. I thankfully studied psych and soc in college and it gave me a new way to look at things. That coupled with working in restaurants for the 7 years I was in college gave me a wide array of people to study. Body language says WAY more than people may want to admit about themselves. I've gotten to a point where I've realized that people have body language in their cars too. They have a tendency to do the same things before they do something particular. I travel a busy ass highway at least to and from work once a day if not again after and I have been studying people's movements and they usually give themselves away before doing something stupid or crazy or even just changing lanes. Sometimes it's a situational issue where no one pays attention to the signs telling them their lane is ending or their lane is an exit only and they all do the same thing, but it's like you can tell which ones are coming over even without a signal just by watching the minute details of their car. It's a great thing to watch people. It gives you a huge insight.
Yeah avoided many a bad crash looking at those small details, it's as if they shake a little bit building up their courage and then explode out of their lane recklessly with little regard for those behind them, it's even worse in traffic since everyone wants to get into the lane that's moving and all the cars are giving off bad vibes
I experienced the psychological effect of getting stronger legs as I got a job as waiter. Suddenly working in movement half a day had me become much more dynamic. Then we got locked down due to epidemy and I started sitting almost all day long, this period is correlated in my life with hard time. Later I went in a mountain place for little vacations with friends and made a lot of sport, mainly snowshoes walking and snowboard, and after that very week I felt much more confident again, contacted I girl whom I was very in love with when I was in high school, and encountered a very positive response. This can seems ovious but gets pretty impressive as we experience it. Also love from France

When I started fasting and losing weight my mind and emotions didn get better and I have a positive outlook on life and I feel I cant be stopped. I think better and my words are powerful.
The mind-body connection is very real, but I never learned to listen to what my body was saying. For over a decade I've lived with a very rigid body. I keep a strict military posture and I'm always painfully aware of a slowly burning tension in my back. I'm also really easily startled when someone evades my personal space physically, despite being heavily built and taller than most people I meet. Positive physical attributes are overwhelmed by anxieties though. Due to some type of deep internal insecurity I go to great lengths to appear composed and strong in this way, but the result is that my body is always putting on an act, it's never free. I suspect the primary emotional driver is a deep sense of shame (brought about by various psychological circumstances in personal history, not necessarily originating from the body) which leads one to protect himself through keeping a rigid body. It's as if the mind is always on the defensive (expecting an attack, a humiliation) and the body reflects this. Conversely, I constantly fantasize about dancing and even do dance on my own in private quite a lot. I rarely dare to do so in public though. Impossible for me to be physically spontaneous in out in the open. To me, a dancing person, who isn't self-conscious, symbolizes the absolute state of freedom. I've always been envious of people who can dance and be free in that regard, but I never put two and two together, I never realized it's because my own body is more like a cage to me. So, the lesson here is two-fold: the mind-body connection is very real and secondly, it pays to pay attention to what you fear the most (dancing in my case), as all your fears (probably) point to hidden desires. Every dragon hides a treasure etc. Also, it sees to me that the reason people aren't aware that there might be something wrong with their body is that the baseline for what people consider healthy is very low, people are so used to having various types of ailments, tiredness, pains, fatigue, constricted breathing, etc, that have been with them for so long (decades in some cases), that they think this is the normal state of things and they can't even envision a reality outside their pain.
I just had a wild thought. One day I’m going to randomly remember this RUclips channel called academy of ideas, and I’m going to be filled with gratitude because it taught me how to become a complete human being. Thanks for providing us with such useful information!!
This is a complex topic for any channel bc it branches into many other specialities of life. But i love that. Life is intertwined like that. Old philosophy math science and fitness all go in a circle. Im fighting asking fitness questions in these comments lol especially since this subject is so diluted with fitness ad like content. No one makes videos on the symbology a body is communicating. Which also goes heavy into art. I often wonder what my bodys strengths and weaknesses mean to other people even on a subconscious level. Or what they mean to me even lol.
I can read other peoples bodies though even in high school. And the small details of the face and hands too. I can tell if someone plays piano sometimes just by the shape their hands take when resting. The pinky and ring finger dont snap in and out like someone who doesnt play. They dont get hung on eachother. They teeter around eachother like a ballerinas walk.
I did a little climb (on my bicycle) This morning ( up western, to the university) it made me feel so good I was singing along (with meloncamp) laughing for no reason and smiling like a lunatic. All this while waiting to pay for my groceries (is red wine a groceries?) You don't lose fitness because you get old - you get old because you lose fitness)
Great timing for me! I have been re-evaluating my position in life and how I feel about it. There are things I want to go after both at work and personally. I recently had a dream in which I cried at somebody boldly expressing that their success was due to confidence. My confidence is low and consequently, so is my aggressiveness. I have not adequately exercised in a year and my body has been craving it much lately. I can feel that it’s also my mind asking for the needed push. Like a reigniting of the proper mind-body cycle.
@Xaris…You can do it! Keep in mind that Covid knocked us all for a wallop. Just take it one day, one step at a time. Put it on you calendar and indicate a start time. I know exactly how you feel, as I have been going through the same. Don’t give up… just hang in there! Don’t give up-ever! Just keep going, you can do it! Your mind; it’s telling you, your body is craving it, and you’ll get it done! Just do it! Don’t worry about anything! Start over, one day at a time, every day and you get there! Honestly, your videos are some of the best of RUclips. I've learned a lot through you and a few other people on this platform. My only issue with the ideas in this video is the lack of speaking on the opposing force of these traits. I could be entirely wrong, but in my mind these traits (if overindulged) could lead to a narcissistic identity. A balance, of humble actions (which could be considered passive by some) and aggressive actions, is the way to a better life, atleast from what I've learned thus far...and it's a hellish struggle to balance. I'm still working on it all, so I could very well be wrong, but I wanted to share my thoughts. Keep up the videos man. You go above and beyond in research and application. It's great stuff.
In Arabic, the word for character is خُلُق (khuluk), and the word for creation is خَلْخ (khalk). Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم taught us a supplication whenever we see our reflection: O Allah, better (or beautify) our character just as you have beautified our creation. And when said in Arabic it has a beautiful rhyme to it since the words are so similar and originate from the same root word. (every word in Arabic originates from a 3 letter root word).

I couldnt believe how important exercising and strength training was for me untill I got a pretty bad bronchitis/asthma and coulndt work out for a couple of months, my mind was unstable and suddenly I felt a part of me was gone, it was terrible. Its amazing how we get addicted to the chemicals we recive after finishing a workout and the serenity our minds has afterwards, specially right now with the quarantine.
That's true I remember when I get bullied in my infernal past, I got a very bad posture wich required years to be fixed, it was like I was so sad that I did not have the strenght to stand straight, I was closed in defensive mode, insecure curved like a weak goblin a monster, I don't know how I survived that.

Absolutely fantastic video. Everything here is presented clearly and rationally. I read Lowen extensively decades ago and had forgotten how brilliant he was. The only thing Lowen lacked was the reality of transcendence, after the self actualization of mind and body in order, balance and harmony with soul, spirit and earth, which is fundamentally the central purpose. I also read Nietzche extensively and arrived at the conclusion that he was a self-indulgent mama's boy who's life did not exactly epitmize his lofty ideals.

I used to be like that in my early teens. Im so happy i managed to mostly overcome it, because things like walking or even taking a deep breath were so stressful to me.

10:23 really hit me. In this sense I often feel like I have almost no ground to stand on. I don't permit myself to take up space, to be, to move forward, to take.
I am 48 and in better shape then at any other time in my life. I rebound, jog, cycle and during the summer, kayaking. I have more strength and stamina now than when I was in my 20’s or 30’s. I feel very much that the strength in mind and character that is achieved with maturity has enabled me to utilize my body in a way that I could never tap into before.
I've been doing yoga for six months and my body feels better than ever... I am 50 and I'm now feeling very little pain, having suffered for years with my hips and legs. It's also been incredible for my mind. I feel young and positive about my life again. Yoga with Adriene here on RUclips, has changed my life. Great video 😁
I had a light understanding of this in the back of my head interestingly, never gave it much thought but always knew that the connection of movement, and our own body was so much deeper with the mind than most thought.

Thanks for this video, I agree with everything you shared. I wanted to add that it’s important to also consider how the quest to improve the body can itself become compulsive and obsessive, as in the case with eating disorders, steroids, etc. I feel like these cases tend to be examples of a top-down, mental approach towards improving the body, rather than allowing the transformation to be informed by how the body feels from the inside.

Fartlek running. And sprinting, that’ll do it. I’m gratefully aggressive with agile expression with a cool factor to it plus I mean I got some confidence building to do but that’s because I run with a silent footsteps at 100 milesperhour. I’m always subconscious to each step I take hoping it’s as efficient effective and as silent as possible, which leads me to believe it’s bestowed a slight self critical perspective on my life dropping my ego but keeping my room for confidence to grow. Life’s weird maan, and this stuffs so cool to take in.
The thing I have against body language is that it is not reliable because people are so different. It's easily misinterpreted. Someone might seem confident to one one person and egotistical to the next. People have different levels of things like, self-consciousness, shyness, etc. These things aren't what makes us who we are, they are part of HOW WE EXPRESS who we are. I agree in the mind-body connection but I don't agree with reading too much into body language.
Here is a spiritual thought on this whole body image thing: Taking into consideration there are SO many different bodies and looks, it seems to be that a soul or consciousness will take a certain vessel that will be the right one to do what it needs to do in their life, and to meet the people they need to meet. This can work out in challenges as well as rewards of experience. You look exactly the way you are supposed to look, and while you can be your healthiest and most optimal weight, you still will have a certain body type depending on factors that can not be changed. This suggests that instead of criticizing ourselves, we must always learn to work with what we have, and learn to use this body to the best of our ability in this life.
We can witness this connection with anxious dogs. They can be trained, in a place they feel safe, to pose with their head and tail high, and be rewarded every time they strike that pose. Then take them where they're uncomfortable, and demand that pose from them. The more it's done, the more the posture changes them. A scaredy dog can be come a relaxed dog, simply by forcing them to fake some confidence on a regular basis
I'm blown away by this short video. I'm someone suffering from complex PTSD, and have become very familiar with the concept that "trauma is stored in the body". As such, I've explored some of the so-called "somatic" approaches to healing, but more broadly have found a renewed interest in developing my body -- strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, coordination, and so on. I've found that these things have had dramatic impacts on reducing symptoms of PTSD -- depression, anxiety, mood instability, fogginess, etc. This video ties so many things together and hit me profoundly, that this older wisdom (as with so many other things) has been lost to modern, Western medicine and conventional notions. I've long felt that the "Cartesian fallacy" (as I call it) underlying Western thought is that things are separable and reducible to discreet parts. For instance, the mind is the mind and the body is the body -- they are separate things. This idea is so prevalent that many doctors scoff at the idea that nutrition might play a dominant role in mental health, for example. I've come to believe that our brain is not even the primary driver of thoughts or emotions, but rather the many, many systems of the body are producing consciousness, emotion, locus of attention, and so on. The brain is obviously essential to "thinking" but I now think of it more as a pattern repository. The drives (impulses, instincts) and priorities and actions we take are coming from our bodies, and exactly as this video quoted, when our bodies are left to entropy and lack of care, we lose those drives. Our bodies' intelligence comprises *billions* of years, passed through DNA, bicrobe colonies, and nutrients. Our brains only contain lessons learned in this lifetime. And yet we erroneously tend to believe that our brains are what give us dominance over the "lower" functions of our animal ancestry. I digress :) But great video, thanks for sharing it.

So true. Whenever I exercise, my neurosis, anxiety, stress, and depression diminish or go away completely. I become more 'grounded'.

Guys honestly, one day when I was about 6 or 7, I did about 30 push ups in a row in front of my family and they were So shocked and kept telling me how strong I was. It was like positive trauma for me. Nowadays people praise me for my physique and I’m always saying that it was literally just my mindset, I don’t even have to work out, I convinced my mind that I have one of the best bodies in the world and it came to life!!

This is very interesting. My dad told me I couldn't do certain things like ride dirt bikes or snowboard because I was out of shape. Pretty sure it was more just him stating a fact but I made it part of my identity that I am out of shape and it is very hard for me to gain muscle. If fixed this to a degree but I'm glad you wrote that comment in case I ever have kids who need to hear the right things.
This came right when I am willing to start exercising and dieting.. it is great to have so philosophical approach to a healthy body too.
I feel we have to have the correct philosophical inner core before we attempt to become successful at any goal we have in life. If our philosophical approach is lackluster, we our doomed to fail somewhere along the line in our personal missions in life, as when things get tough (and they will) its our philosophical strength that will help us soldier on through those hard times.

I think this pain is eternal and not necessarily bad. Have tou tried to use your body to express other things than lifting? Dance, theatre, drawing, group sports, outdoor sports, so many things. It will not kill tbe existencial pain, but it's aways interesting to learn a new way to express yourself

I had a Professor in college who was a feeble tiny old man. Yet whenever he spoke he would say such brilliant things, such wise thoughts, such illuminating conclusions, that to me he truly seemed like a giant. I was young, athletic and good looking and yet I always thought he was 1000 times closer to divinity that I ever was at that time. However I do believe that morbid obesity speaks volumes about the beauty or lack thereof of a mind.

It's wild, I didn't know anything about body language until I was about 18-20. I thankfully studied psych and soc in college and it gave me a new way to look at things. That coupled with working in restaurants for the 7 years I was in college gave me a wide array of people to study. Body language says WAY more than people may want to admit about themselves. I've gotten to a point where I've realized that people have body language in their cars too. They have a tendency to do the same things before they do something particular. I travel a busy ass highway at least to and from work once a day if not again after and I have been studying people's movements and they usually give themselves away before doing something stupid or crazy or even just changing lanes. Sometimes it's a situational issue where no one pays attention to the signs telling them their lane is ending or their lane is an exit only and they all do the same thing, but it's like you can tell which ones are coming over even without a signal just by watching the minute details of their car. It's a great thing to watch people. It gives you a huge insight.
Yeah avoided many a bad crash looking at those small details, it's as if they shake a little bit building up their courage and then explode out of their lane recklessly with little regard for those behind them, it's even worse in traffic since everyone wants to get into the lane that's moving and all the cars are giving off bad vibes

I experienced the psychological effect of getting stronger legs as I got a job as waiter. Suddenly working in movement half a day had me become much more dynamic. Then we got locked down due to epidemy and I started sitting almost all day long, this period is correlated in my life with hard time. Later I went in a mountain place for little vacations with friends and made a lot of sport, mainly snowshoes walking and snowboard, and after that very week I felt much more confident again, contacted I girl whom I was very in love with when I was in high school, and encountered a very positive response. This can seems ovious but gets pretty impressive as we experience it.

When I started fasting and losing weight my mind and emotions didn get better and I have a positive outlook on life and I feel I cant be stopped. I think better and my words are powerful.
The mind-body connection is very real, but I never learned to listen to what my body was saying. For over a decade I've lived with a very rigid body. I keep a strict military posture and I'm always painfully aware of a slowly burning tension in my back. I'm also really easily startled when someone evades my personal space physically, despite being heavily built and taller than most people I meet. Positive physical attributes are overwhelmed by anxieties though. Due to some type of deep internal insecurity I go to great lengths to appear composed and strong in this way, but the result is that my body is always putting on an act, it's never free. I suspect the primary emotional driver is a deep sense of shame (brought about by various psychological circumstances in personal history, not necessarily originating from the body) which leads one to protect himself through keeping a rigid body. It's as if the mind is always on the defensive (expecting an attack, a humiliation) and the body reflects this. Conversely, I constantly fantasize about dancing and even do dance on my own in private quite a lot. I rarely dare to do so in public though. Impossible for me to be physically spontaneous in out in the open. To me, a dancing person, who isn't self-conscious, symbolizes the absolute state of freedom. I've always been envious of people who can dance and be free in that regard, but I never put two and two together, I never realized it's because my own body is more like a cage to me. So, the lesson here is two-fold: the mind-body connection is very real and secondly, it pays to pay attention to what you fear the most (dancing in my case), as all your fears (probably) point to hidden desires. Every dragon hides a treasure etc. Also, it sees to me that the reason people aren't aware that there might be something wrong with their body is that the baseline for what people consider healthy is very low, people are so used to having various types of ailments, tiredness, pains, fatigue, constricted breathing, etc, that have been with them for so long (decades in some cases), that they think this is the normal state of things and they can't even envision a reality outside their pain.

This is a complex topic for any channel bc it branches into many other specialities of life. But i love that. Life is intertwined like that. Old philosophy math science and fitness all go in a circle. Im fighting asking fitness questions in these comments lol especially since this subject is so diluted with fitness ad like content. No one makes videos on the symbology a body is communicating. Which also goes heavy into art. I often wonder what my bodys strengths and weaknesses mean to other people even on a subconscious level. Or what they mean to me even lol.
I can read other peoples bodies though even in high school. And the small details of the face and hands too. I can tell if someone plays piano sometimes just by the shape their hands take when resting. The pinky and ring finger dont snap in and out like someone who doesnt play. They dont get hung on eachother. They teeter around eachother like a ballerinas walk.

Great timing for me! I have been re-evaluating my position in life and how I feel about it. There are things I want to go after both at work and personally. I recently had a dream in which I cried at somebody boldly expressing that their success was due to confidence. My confidence is low and consequently, so is my aggressiveness. I have not adequately exercised in a year and my body has been craving it much lately. I can feel that it’s also my mind asking for the needed push. Like a reigniting of the proper mind-body cycle.

Honestly, your videos are some of the best of RUclips. I've learned a lot through you and a few other people on this platform.
My only issue with the ideas in this video is the lack of speaking on the opposing force of these traits. I could be entirely wrong, but in my mind these traits (if overindulged) could lead to a narcissistic identity.
A balance, of humble actions (which could be considered passive by some) and aggressive actions, is the way to a better life, atleast from what I've learned thus far...and it's a hellish struggle to balance.

I couldnt believe how important exercising and strength training was for me untill I got a pretty bad bronchitis/asthma and coulndt work out for a couple of months, my mind was unstable and suddenly I felt a part of me was gone, it was terrible.

The only thing Lowen lacked was the reality of transcendence, after the self actualization of mind and body in order, balance and harmony with soul, spirit and earth, which is fundamentally the central purpose.
I also read Nietzche extensively and arrived at the conclusion that he was a self-indulgent mama's boy who's life did not exactly epitmize his lofty ideals.

I used to be like that in my early teens. Im so happy i managed to mostly overcome it, because things like walking or even taking a deep breath were so stressful to me.

Thanks for this video, I agree with everything you shared. I wanted to add that it’s important to also consider how the quest to improve the body can itself become compulsive and obsessive, as in the case with eating disorders, steroids, etc. I feel like these cases tend to be examples of a top-down, mental approach towards improving the body, rather than allowing the transformation to be informed by how the body feels from the inside.

I’m gratefully aggressive with agile expression with a cool factor to it plus I mean I got some confidence building to do but that’s because I run with a silent footsteps at 100 milesperhour. I’m always subconscious to each step I take hoping it’s as efficient effective and as silent as possible, which leads me to believe it’s bestowed a slight self critical perspective on my life dropping my ego but keeping my room for confidence to grow. Life’s weird maan, and this stuffs so cool to take in.
The thing I have against body language is that it is not reliable because people are so different. It's easily misinterpreted. Someone might seem confident to one one person and egotistical to the next. People have different levels of things like, self-consciousness, shyness, etc. These things aren't what makes us who we are, they are part of HOW WE EXPRESS who we are. I agree in the mind-body connection but I don't agree with reading too much into body language.
Here is a spiritual thought on this whole body image thing: Taking into consideration there are SO many different bodies and looks, it seems to be that a soul or consciousness will take a certain vessel that will be the right one to do what it needs to do in their life, and to meet the people they need to meet. This can work out in challenges as well as rewards of experience. You look exactly the way you are supposed to look, and while you can be your healthiest and most optimal weight, you still will have a certain body type depending on factors that can not be changed.
This suggests that instead of criticizing ourselves, we must always learn to work with what we have, and learn to use this body to the best of our ability in this life.
In reality the masses live quite lives of desperation.

We can witness this connection with anxious dogs. They can be trained, in a place they feel safe, to pose with their head and tail high, and be rewarded every time they strike that pose. Then take them where they're uncomfortable, and demand that pose from them. The more it's done, the more the posture changes them. A scaredy dog can be come a relaxed dog, simply by forcing them to fake some confidence on a regular basis

I'm blown away by this short video. I'm someone suffering from complex PTSD, and have become very familiar with the concept that "trauma is stored in the body". As such, I've explored some of the so-called "somatic" approaches to healing, but more broadly have found a renewed interest in developing my body -- strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, coordination, and so on. I've found that these things have had dramatic impacts on reducing symptoms of PTSD -- depression, anxiety, mood instability, fogginess, etc.
This video ties so many things together and hit me profoundly, that this older wisdom (as with so many other things) has been lost to modern, Western medicine and conventional notions. I've long felt that the "Cartesian fallacy" (as I call it) underlying Western thought is that things are separable and reducible to discreet parts. For instance, the mind is the mind and the body is the body -- they are separate things. This idea is so prevalent that many doctors scoff at the idea that nutrition might play a dominant role in mental health, for example. I've come to believe that our brain is not even the primary driver of thoughts or emotions, but rather the many, many systems of the body are producing consciousness, emotion, locus of attention, and so on. The brain is obviously essential to "thinking" but I now think of it more as a pattern repository. The drives (impulses, instincts) and priorities and actions we take are coming from our bodies, and exactly as this video quoted, when our bodies are left to entropy and lack of care, we lose those drives. Our bodies' intelligence comprises *billions* of years, passed through DNA, bicrobe colonies, and nutrients. Our brains only contain lessons learned in this lifetime. And yet we erroneously tend to believe that our brains are what give us dominance over the "lower" functions of our animal ancestry.
