  • I flew Faith into the woods where she lost signal and disconnected to test auto-RTH. Unfortunately, she didn't get very far as a dead tree branch was right in front of her when she turned toward home.

    I can say you’ve definitely put Faith through her paces. You’re like a honey badger!!! Hahaha. Nice job as always, Gary.

      Yes, I'm sorry to say I lost a little faith in Faith on that last one. That was the first time she failed on RTH. But when she turned around, that tiny dead branch was hanging right in front of her. Maybe I should do like @stevedawson3863 said and take a trim saw with me and clean off all the dead branches on my way to get Faith. Hahaha
      I think I'm ready to try something else, like waypoints. I still haven't tried that yet. At least I finally got her to land on the landing pad on my last flight yesterday, after recalibrating the gimbal.

    Gary, it's time to give Faith a nickname. How about "Crash" 😁 That's one tuff drone!

      Hahaha, yeah, I'm kinda testing the limits of "Crash Faith". Fortunately, she only flew about a foot before crashing this time. That darned hanging branch was right in front of her when she turned toward home. I may give up on these tests soon. Faith, the crash cat is just about out of her 9 lives. 😸

    Every time you go to retrieve your drone take a small trim saw with you and get rid of some of those low branches!! Lol.

    I thought you were wanting to test RTH not crash & find my drone by beeping. hehehe
    I don't think you old drone had the beeping feature. Did it?
    I was surprised when your controller started showing weak signal that Faith didn't automatically go into RTH mode.
    Too bad after Faith crashed she couldn't take off on her own, but it looked like one of the arms collapsed.
    I guess the home point has to update every time the drone takes off?

    • @gama45
      @gama45  2 месяца назад

      Hahaha, yeah, she didn't get very far toward home that time, did she? The home point is set every time the drone is launched, but you can move it to where she is at any time. And yes, the Mini 2 also has the beeping feature when Find My Drone is activated, as you can see in this video, where Grace got buried in the snow, and I kept walking over the top of her, as I couldn't tell which direction the beeping was coming from, which was right under my feet. 🤣

    Ah, when you hit rth, she turns, then she doesnt have enaugh space to react, i guess

      Yes, I was flying blind when that happened. My screen froze, then went black & white as Faith lost signal, then connection, as I kept pushing forward on the stick. I didn't know about that tiny dead branch hanging down until I hiked out to the crash site and had her follow me home, then watched the video on my computer. I cringed when I saw a few near misses as she was following me home also!
      BTW, I watched your video, and you don't look old enough to have a wife, unless that was your son flying the Mini 3. But I'm old. I'll be 80 next year.

      @@gama45 yeah its still amazing tho, 360 obstacle avoidance is still working fine, we just need to understand what mini4 can't do, i can say we just need to fly until atleast 2 yellow bars signal then never push it but instead just go back before freezing, thats alot of safer. I am 30 btw, my place is around forest with great people too, you can fly anywhere here, low flying above someone house, none talking about privacy

      @@FeryPranata76-sn2ew Yes, flying blind isn't fun or safe. I crashed my Mini 2 a few months ago when trying to fly under a bridge, but the screen froze and I crashed into the bottom of the bridge because I was just a bit too high. Here's that video:
      ruclips.net/video/lRHnCUwhyXI/видео.html
      Fortunately, there was no damage. You live in a very beautiful area, and it's nice to know there are no privacy issues. I haven't had any complaints from my neighbors, as I try to keep my drone at least 200 feet above their houses, but I have received comments on RUclips from people saying they don't want anyone flying over their house. But I can't see anything you can't see on Google Earth, which is what I tell them. 99% of the comments are positive.

    Gary - Hmmm.... I'm really surprised that you didn't install prop guards for these "in the woods" torture tests. I'm guessing prop guards would have probably paid for themselves by now considering the number of nicked prop blades you're bound to have replaced by now. I bought an el cheapo set of prop guards online for about $6 USD and they work great for buzzing around inside the house... or out in the woods.😁

    • @gama45
      @gama45  2 месяца назад

      You're right, Jimbo, that would be a good idea. Maybe I should get some prop guards. Faith was doing so good at first, never hitting those small branches on RTH, but this time, I was actually flying blind just before the minor crash. The screen froze, then went black & white as Faith lost signal, then connection, as I kept pushing forward on the stick. I didn't know about that tiny dead branch hanging down until I hiked out to the crash site and had her follow me home, then watched the video on my computer. I cringed when I saw a few near misses as she was following me home also!

      OK, I just ordered the prop guards from Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion, Jimbo!

      Well, Jimbo, I tried it with prop guards, but what I didn't realize was that the prop guards disable the obstacle avoidance. Faith almost hit me in the face when I flew her toward me! I looked at the screen, and it said "Propeller guards detected. Flight performance lowered to ensure flight safety." I didn't know that meant disabling obstacle avoidance. It crashed twice but kept flying.

      @@gama45OUCH! I'm pretty sure I got the same "Propeller guards detected..." with mine but AO worked fine. Did you manually turn on AO after you got the "Propeller guards..." message? I'll do another flight tomorrow with propeller guards on and check it again.
