Hey Rhett, one simple piece of advice before buttoning up the walls…
Think about running plastic chase in the ceilings and the appropriate walls to make snaking any cabling or data lines, co-ax , easier in the future…. It cuts down on damage opening walls and gets you from point to point without boring holes in any framing.
As a carpenter for a very large laboratory on Long Island, every renovation we did involved future proofing and was never a wasted effort. Plastic tube chases are inexpensive and certainly worth it. Good luck with the rest of the build. Be well.

I'm a pro studio builder and I'd back you up on your good advice, with an additional observation: lay 3 or 4 color-coded pull-thru cords inside your pipe chases. It saves fishing them through later, and means you're ready to pull extra cable as needed.

I don’t think they are that hard to find(I’m in Canada so maybe it’s different) my experience is that customers who want bespoke building, framing and finishing aren’t prepared to pay for what that type of job costs. In fact they think that they’re one off build should be in the ball park of cookie cutter builds and this is a giant hurdle. Custom, bespoke work by talented master crafts people costs money with good reason and on top of that material costs are at an all time high.

@@davidhaworth7152 It might vary by location. I spent 14 years slowly remodeling an old house. I did about 75% of the work myself. Every time I needed a contractor it was like pulling teeth to get someone to show up. It wasn’t about budget or complexity. It was just getting a contractor to come look at the work and tell me what it would cost. The experience continues on our new house.

Y'know, I ran into a hell of a bug while I was building my own home studio ( a log smaller than yours, it's only a "sound proofed" bedroom in my basement which has a control room on the other side of the wall). I basically built the entire double-frame myself, and the room is a "room in a box". I have a nice quadruple-paned glass to see inside, double gyproc thickness, resilient channels, roxû everywhere...
But I started about 5 years ago and I'm not done with the paint yet. Won't get into details but I had a personal issue that slowed me down quite a bit. I recently got back on track, and am about to finish the entire place. All I have left to do is the low-voltage part, which I can't wait to see on your episode list.
Keep the faith my friend, your studio will eventually be done, a lot quicker than mine!

You most definitely would not want heat running there in the winter. Instead of a second zone on the current HVAC which would be quite a small zone on such a big system, consider adding a small stand alone mini split. They do have ducted models that can be mounted elsewhere and ducted over.

Some 30 years ago I bought a house which needed massive reconstruction. As I had no real building experience I decided to do it on my own. In a years time I rebuilt almost every internal wall (including getting rid of a supporting one and catching it with a steel beam), added more than 600 square foot to the house, put in all new electricity, plumbing and heating, insulating, 11 new doors with frames I made as well virtually on my own in a year. BTW it was a no wood construction.

A steel beam is more costly than lumber, but not when a steel can be split into three manageable lengths and spliced together, can fit into a smaller space so not destroying the pipework and all that goes with it, and as it could go in easily with three guys in a morning, which would save probably four guys three days labor, which is where the real money is. What is missing all along is planning ahead, drawings (I haven't seen a single drawing), and scheme fully formed before work commences.

P.S. keep your vids on Google Drive. You should do a live stream with Shane - could help future studio builders.

Well Rhett to be 100% honest and clear, at 3:13 you say ... ''their eyes glazed over... and they backed out" That's not really accurate as they could only truly 'back out' if, IF they had accepted the job, which they didn't. In reality, they did you a favor by being honest with you (even though it's not what you wanted to hear). Perhaps they recognized the job was not beneficial to them making money, which is after all the reason they do what they do. Why accept a complicated job, when you can make just as much money doing an easier job? The Studio is your passion, but It's just a job to them as they are just trying to put food on the table. They really don't care it's a Recording Studio or a Funeral Parlor. Them turning down your job, wasn't personal, but they were honest and said no thanks because they knew it was complicated and time consuming !. Would you rather they accepted the job and did it incorrectly?
I am a contractor and have turned down many jobs, because I realize I can make a simple four wall room for just as much money in much less time as a complicated build. It's economics.
I wish you nothing but success, I hope the finished product serves you well and I hope to hear some great music that was created in your studio. I love your channel.

I agree. But the problem is guys giving a quote, you agreeing, then they keep putting you off, or they don't show up, then ghost you... I've had 4 concrete guys out, 3 quoted, 2 seemed ready, then 1 ghosted, then the last said I'll pour last of October. No calls, keeps putting me off. Tons of liars in construction, like most fields. People need to keep their word, even to their own detriment, not bail or put someone off if a better job shows up. That's why the industry has a _terrible_ reputation...

@@Guitaural. '' That's why the industry has a terrible reputation''
But the industry also has a bad reputation because some contractors accept a job while knowing full well they aren't capable of doing the job. I respect a person who honestly recognizes the job is beyond their ability's and passes. It would have been far worse if someone came in with a low estimate and did a poor job. I'm glad Rhett found a quality company to do the job the correct way.. It's a tricky job.

Humbling and a little melancholic to think that 30 years ago Rick Beato has the exact same plan. Build a studio to be able to make music a livelihood without needing to be a “good enough” musician/artist to make a living from that. Become a producer/studio owner and then combine with being a RUclipsr … and then, 30 years from now, Rhett’s studio will be empty and not doing studio things

in most places, code doesn't allow you to put flex duct above a hard ceiling. you're also not supposed to splice it, or run more than 8' of it per run. maybe it's not like that where you live, i don't know.

Hey Rhett, I’ve helped to build several pro audio studios in the Tri-state area both design and electrical power and elco rack wiring and custom snakes. Someone suggested running some pvc tubing between your control room and live room. One for power and another for low voltage and twisted pair. We build our studios to analog specs although digital is not as stringent. For instance any live room should not have a single circuit that surround the room whether it’s lighting or power receptacles. Always split your iso ground circuit so no 180 degree loops are present. Many of our studios here still offer 2” 24 and 48 track linked tape machines

Anyway you get the idea. I did the wiring and some acoustic design for Studio Crash in Philadephia which was listed by AES as one of the most perfect response live rooms and control rooms anywhere. Send me note if you want to talk shop. Shame I didn’t know of your search for pro studio builders. We travel when called upon to do so. Hope you take the advice about the pvc for Dante’ and other wiring considerations with options for expansion.
Can’t wait to see the finish. PS HVAC flex ductwork must be roughted in circles to cancel the sound of the air coming through the ducts….. you don’t want to have to turn off the air to do quiet mixes. All my best ,
