Two extremely important lore bits that I'm surprised you didn't mention were how well Crow and Amanda are getting along (my guardian felt like such a proud dad when Crow asked Amanda out at the end of the Behemoth battleground post-armistice), and how the hunters are in possession of Shaxx's missing horn.
Ironic given how Amanda and Cayde had some sort of relationship with each other. Or maybe that was more with Petra. Maybe it’s the hunter charm you know 😉.

Canonicly: everyone in the crucible useing stasis is on a euthanization list for when they fall to darkness.

I love that pretty much every move made against the last city or guardians can just be summed up as a bad move on the cabals part because we just shit on them in retaliation.

One of the biggest points of confusion for me is how crow could be killed so many times by guardians but no one spoke up about encountering uldren sov himself
I would say some might in small talk but id goes the rest didnt tell anyone due to them not knowing he ca. be resurrected. Regardless I see what you mean.
Well, they're not killing him for fun or pleasure or bragging rights, anything like that. They were killing him as part of their grief for Cayde's death, and grief is usually a pretty personal thing. Also, Vanguard policy is "don't search for who you were before", so I imagine it could be difficult to report that a new risen/guardian has a familiar face.
i love the fact that we are way too powerful and it's acknowledged in the lore
Caiatl's only mistake was asking Zavala to bow. If she legit didn't ask them to bow before her, she would have her alliance.
I mean, the Cabal only have their honor left after multiple setbacks and losses (losing their home world no less by the Hive) and Caiatl as Empress has to put her people first than her (She really wanted an equal alliance but the whole of Cabal don’t want equal partnership). It’s still the best outcome for her though since the majority of Cabal would honor the Guardians wining the Rite of Proving without calling themselves hypocrites and would cull those more radical Cabal and are opposed to peace.
If all Caiatl wanted was to regroup and maybe enlist some guardians to help reclaim their home from the Hive, I'd pack my vault and gladly march with my new battle brothers

Join us! Just focus on one thing at a time, it can be a bit much all at once.
Depending on when you last played, shadowkeep and beyond light's stories is really all you need. Most of the seasonal stories have little connection to each other and leading up to the next expansion is easily explained in probably in 5 minutes.

Despite playing almost everyday of the season, these recaps still are so nice and ties any questions with the answers for me.

I think Caital was genuine about wanting a proper alliance, but in order to get the rest of her council on board she had to ask us to bow. If the council had fully gone along with Caital, maybe the negotiations would have gone very differently

After the proving ground strike the ending dialogue for the battlegrounds talked more about defectors of the cabal and also Crow and Holliday flirting

I wouldn't say that this story about the Cabal is completely divorced from setting up Witch Queen. We just spent an entire season learning that Caiatl is in Sol because Torobatl was destroyed by Savathun, and she was looking for allies. This is going to have repercussions when we face Savathun ourselves, and whether we will have an ally in the Cabal. They've beautifully set up Caiatl to display her true character because she will be given the choice to stand with us when we wouldn't stand with her, or to abandon us as retribution for denying her.
I also believe that we'll transition in to Splicer by way of the Conclave's interest in Vex tech.
Xivu Arath destroyed Torobatl.
Wasn't it more Xivu Arath who took Torobatl, than Savathun? That certainly ties into Season of the Hunt, given it's connection to Xivu Arath, and of course she is Savathun's sister, so they are not completely separate, but I feel like the game is leading more towards a direct confrontation with Xivu Arath than it is Savathun lately. That's not to say Savathun isn't present, and Witch Queen would seem to suggest Savathun rather than Xivu Arath, but I do wonder how Bungie is going to have us deal with the pair of them.

1:57 if you assume one guardian has killed 10,000 Cabal alone, and then look at the number of players per month in Destiny 2, on Steam, which is around 50-100K, you'll have over 500,000,000 to potentially 1 Billion Cabal killed since Destiny 2. On PC. Just for the Cabal. Then if you think about all the console players, and the players and kills in Destiny 1, then that number is probably in the hundreds of billions. Are we really going to believe between D1 and this point in D2, Guardians have not eradicated the Cabal and Fallen at least once over?

I also really enjoyed story in this season; fully agree with you, Byf. Finally Destiny's story feels really interesting and engaging enough to follow up.
Honestly I was not surprised by Zavala's actions towards Crow. Not because story wise redemption sells good but because of who Zavala is. You see it everytime he shows up, the amount of care he has for the title of Guardian and what it's supposed to stand for to humanity. He genuinely believes a guardian is not their past self but a new beginning on the journey of Light.

The seasons leading up to Witch Queen appear to be us forming new allies. First with the Crow and now with Caitl. Soon to be with Mithrax. I think all of these characters and factions will be assisting us in the battle against the Hive and Savathûn.

Seeing as how the events are gonna go about in the season of the splicer, there is a very high chance that the next season would be about dreaming city again
Lore marathon hell yeah
Man, I'd love it if Caiatl found the Leviathan. Imagine it:
Even with the sat feeds streaming the sight from orbit, the Guardians still couldn't believe it.
The golden, colossal hull of the Leviathan lurched forth from the ethereal depths of space, planet-devouring maw set open like some great, primordial beast.
To put it lightly, there was panic in the streets. Calls and demands bombarded the Tower, pleading that the Guardians launch into action against what was undoubtedly a new threat.
Just when a legion of Guardian ships was about to launch, a transmission reached the H.E.L.M.
Osiris, Saladin, Zavala and the Guardians stood before the table as Caiatl's ghostly image suddenly appeared. Pointing to the Guardians, she uttered but one thing.
"Get in, losers," she rumbles, unmistakable glee in her tone, "we're going god-slaying."
So, we have a potential Cabal Ally now? And Calus never counted, so don’t even start.

Since we are friends with the cabal now what if we in future destiny content can create cabal guardians as our characters or fallen since next season Mithrax will be our buddy like just imagine how great that would be or not I don't know

Fallen I could see, but cabal guardians would have physical downsides like not being able to get through crouch spaces. Fallen though could be worked around (realistically the vanguard would just cut holes for second arms), and it'd be pretty cool

I personally think this was well linked together with SotH, maybe not cause-to-effect linked, but definitely well. Both seasons are dealing with the effect of Xivu Arath which also builds up for Witch Queen. Ever increasing focus on the Vex got us ready, in a focus sense, for Season of the Splicer, which ties back to Beyond Light's main story well. Plus an appearance of a high-ranking Psion (The one behind the shield when you need to defeat the three wyverns, not seen again) that may be Amtek (?) ties back into SotW. I think this season has really excelled in making the world breathe, allowing us to read the weft and weave of time as two desperate warrior races struggle to come to an agreement (which will most likely be arrived at in S15 lol) against an existential death.

But lets be honest here, we all wanted a Bracus Zavala, we all 2nd guessed ourselves a moment there. XD

It would not surprise me that with all of this talk of Xivu' Arath in the last two seasons that the Witch Queen expansion is a trick and that SavaThun isnt in the DLC and tricks us into killing her sister. It would be the most appropriate for the story overall.
I never even thought of that. I do feel like savathun will die in this expansion though, and they'll either do that as the end of the expansion story and keep savathun as a raid, or just keep xivu arath for a future expansion, which saves bungie having to make new characters and makes the hive gods the main villains they should be in the Destiny story. Savathun might survive and die as part of the darkness story, killed by the pyramids for her hubris after her victory over us in witch queen in a cutscene. As a trickery god it doesn't really make sense for her to ever face us head on, so it'd be an interesting raid
Thanks for this - (relatively) compact summaries of what happened in a season have been hgh on my wish list for a while. I didn't play for the last season, and trying to get a broad-strokes view of what happened is difficult.
I feel like this season (making peace with the Caiatl and her empire) and next season (possibly making peace with Mithrax and his house) is a sort of gathering of allies to prepare for battle with the Witch Queen. I dont know if that's where this is going, but thats what it feels like to me
My biggest issue with this season's story is that in game, this is the first time Saladin has had major screentime since Rise of Iron, and they do so little with him. They could have easily made him being angry and disagreeing with everything Zavala decides to do, make sense. Caital very likely reminds Saladin of the Warlords from the Dark Ages. She originally came here offering an 'alliance' against the hive at the price of servitude. This is very likely something Saladin saw a lot of in the Dark Ages...but it's never brought up, he's never set up to present his side. It just feels like Saladin had a ton of wasted potential in the in game story this season. Lore bookwise he's been pretty good. But I feel like more could have been done with him.

Season of the Chosen was excellent. I really, REALLY hope this coming season is just as good.
@mynameisByf These are always great videos. Love watching them and learning. HOWEVER, might it be possible to do a lore video someday on the general lifespan of the Destiny races. So much history passes with these races & characters that it seems like every important character (villain/hero - alike) has been alive for hundreds and thousands of years. Not counting Oryx's possible million plus year life span.
Let's take a moment and realize the following trend:
Beyond Light is shaping up to be like what Taken King was: we got new subclasses, the story was good, the raid blew out minds. This was followed by Rise of Iron, a pretty dope expansion with an even crazier raid, an awesome story, a new(ish) destination, and pretty awesome live events (flying broom for Halloween, and expanded SRL with horns, anyone?). VoG is coming before Witch Queen, which as an expansion has some pretty big shoes to fill, and I think it's possibly gonna be crazy enough to do it.
Season of the Chosen in a Nutshell:
Zavala roasted the Cabal and started the most one sided conflict in living memory,
Caitl took to Twitter to rant about how badly she was getting her butt kicked before signing a peace treaty,
Crow and Amanda drank some choccy water together while Crows mask stayed on ;)
Osiris and the Guardian found a spoopy ship which in all honesty resulted in very little in the grand Scheme of things

Sagira was killed during season of the hunt. Osiris tried to hunt the xivu arath's high celebrant on his own and she died.

I’d imagine they’ll go towards a narrative that goes through reconciling the issues of the other races, similar to what we’ve been doing with Caital and the Cabal legions, after we have taken down the overarching threat of the Darkness
Hi Byf. Could you do a video on how the classes and subclasses came to be? (Stumbled upon your old sunbreaker titan video, and was wondering about the lore behind the rest of the subclasses and then the thought of how did gaurdians even get defined into classes popped into mind (sorry for the paragraph))

I would love to see more partnerships with other "enemy" types because this season has shown that more complex storytelling makes it more engaging.

The Linking is the steady conversations about seeing the humanity, in the non human races, during the battlegrounds. Specifically with Holliday and Crow as advocates. Then leading us into the season with the Light Kell who was already on that path. I think we'll be "allied" with 2 of the 6 enemy races by Witch Queen.

I want to see more friendly aliens in Destiny. It would be easy for them to do like most games and only ever have the enemies be enemies, but it's more realistic for them to actually do whatever they need to do to survive, such as allying with us and helping us out. Most games just have their enemies be generic alien races that have some trivial objective so we have to fight them, but it's interesting and refreshing to see races that aren't just black and white.
It appeared that Caiatl would have asked for an alliance with the Guardians as equals, but her council advised against it as it would cause mass defections within her troops. That's why she asked the Guardians to bow to her and her command. It was a gamble doomed to fail. But she was between a rock and a hard place trying to maneuver to keep her forces loyal to her and reach an alliance that would give her the advantage she needed to give her people a chance to gain back their home world. Sadly and tragically whatever road she took would lead to failure at this point in the story.

What I would have liked to see for Crow's reveal to Zavala would be a little different. Uldren would find out about his past on his own, and he would reveal himself willingly, after a long period of deliberation. He would walk directly into the tower, come face-to-face with Zavala. There would be a beat while the vanguard comprehended, and then Zavala would break. And I mean really break, for the first time as we've really seen him. He'd activate Fists of Havoc, and he would just kill the guardian with the face of Uldren, over and over and over again as Ikora and the tower watched. And Crow would just let it happen until Zavala would eventually stop from sheer fatigue and helped him up. Very different approach to the scene, but I think it would have been entertaining.
Ooh, maybe the thread through this year before Witch Queen is assembling allies. Season of the hunt gave us Crow, season of the chosen has an armistice with Caital, season of the splicer will be Mithrax
So, we basically were given the opportunity to become Cabal Elites.
With an army of cabal we could kill AN ENTIRE FIELD OF FALLEN
Space Rhino and big smurf become friends after almost killing each other, and the psions are there being a pain too.
