    I have a plastic knife made just for cutting salad. I read years ago that the metal knives oxidizes the salad and that's why it turns brown. The plastic knife does seem to keep it fresher.

      Good tip, do not cut lettuce with metal knife or tear off with fingers. I would keep the tomatoes whole , not in fridge. Lasts a lot longer. Living alone, I have found they have lasted longer than a week.

    Still a good video in 2020! I just use glass containers instead of the bags. Thanks for saying you can reuse the bags some just throw them away after one use!! So many people (including me at some point) think iceberg lettuce had no or littleutrients. But if researched.... You'll see it differently!

    I use the zip bags. Once I have my salad in each bag I zip it up except for a tint corner, I put my finger in and squeeze it open like a pee pod and suck the excess air out and seal the last tiny bit up. There you have it, a vacuum packed zip bag.

    I take my washed leaves and roll them into paper towel tubes, before putting them into a square plastic container with a tight fitting lid. Then take out one roll each day. A large compartment container holds the tomato, onion, cucumber, etc.. Very fast, very fresh, very easy.

    • @daphnemiller5910

      We don't know know the contents of those tubes. They may not be food safe.

    • @rogerdodger8415

      @@daphnemiller5910 I can tell you! The contents are whatever you put in there. If you put "washed lettuce leaves" in the rolled up paper towels, almost all of the time washed lettuce leaves, will come out. Now, once in awhile a winning lottery ticket might pop out, in that case, I'd appreciate it, if you'd send them back to me!

      @daphnemiller5910 5 лет назад

      Perhaps my comment wasn't clear, or you're just a joker. Don't know. Anyway, of course I was referring to the tubes themselves, not the lettuce or any other thing you insert into your paper towel tubes. @@rogerdodger8415

    • @rogerdodger8415
      @rogerdodger8415 5 лет назад +1

  • @ivorykeys1566

    Speaking of getting as much air out, i saw a chef zip the bag almost closed, place a straw in the corner and suck out the air. Really neat!
    P s.. It's better to use a lettuce knife(plastic) to cut the lettuce, to prevent browning. It's has something to do with a metal knife and air that turns it brown. Better yet, just tear it up by hand and keep the water off by using a salad spinner.

    That’s not a safe way to wash the lettuce. Either open it up the first day and wash it very well or when you are ready to eat some of it take off the leaves on the amount you want to eat, clean the leaves individually and let it dry off water. You’ll be surprised the amount of insects and stuff you find inside. I totally give my lettuce a bath.
