I didn't read much during my first marriage (36 years). I was a 'bookworm' as a girl and got lost in what I was reading to the extent I didn't hear what was asked of me and it bugged my husband who felt I was cutting myself off from him, so it discouraged me from reading, certainly never in bed. But when he passed away suddenly my boss at the time asked me what I was reading and I looked blankly at him. So his wife very kindly got me a couple of books on coping with life after a sudden death of a close family member. I started reading the first one in bed as being alone in that bed was a hard time of the day and found I would read for about 8 minutes before my eyes became heavy. Worked like a charm.
My neighbor has a cute little reading nook in her house for her kids. They have a large family (7 kids), and they've set a certain early bedtime. However, whoever chooses to read can stay up an extra half hour to read a book of their choice or be read to by a sibling or parent. So reading is a special privilege and reward in their home. I should mention that her twin boys are graduating from high school this year and both received full tuition scholarships to the private university of their choice, which I think has a lot to do with regular reading.
Wow! Good for the boys! That's so great for them. I loooove this idea of getting to stay up a bit later if you read. Like this other person said, brilliant! It really is.
That's how I reared my boys. I read to them several times a day. They could keep their light on if they were reading. Often, they'd fall asleep with a book in their hands. They are 32 and 33 now and both geniuses.
I love you two! Here’s a tip for those who like to read actual paper books: get a headlamp (the type with adjustable elastic that fits around your head) in the camping section of a store, or online. Make sure it has a RED bulb in it. Red light doesn’t keep you awake, but still illuminates book pages. It’s hands-free, since it’s a headlamp, and doesn’t keep bedmates awake. It’s worked very well for the insomniacs in my family; they can read but aren’t kept awake by the “blue” light of electronic devices. I hope this helps someone like it helped us. 💚 Keep up the great videos, Dawn! 🥰
Love this! I bought a headlamp when there was a multi-day power outage where I live and it made it so much better to be able to snuggle up and read. Like a fun adventure. I'm so curious to see if using it with a film of red plastic will help me sleep better. Thanks for the cool idea! 🤓🔦❤📚
Another awesome video!!! Your channel is the best one on RUclips! Idk...I was having a bad day today and after watching several of your videos today my spirit just lifts and Joy comes back into my heart. I feel like your channel is truly blessed by God to help us not only on our minimizing journey but also in our spiritual lives. Thank you Dawn and Diana! I am so happy I found your channel!
So I joined Jazzercise and two months later I trained to be an instructor and I feel I don’t have to pay to workout and I have made such wonderful friendships!!!
Going back to older videos since I only met you a few months ago. Love you two and I learn something every video. I was a personal trainer too…. Walk and do weights at home. I am 69 now and it still is the best program.
The cupboards being half full for ease of getting things in and out is a similar principal I learned working at a library. They keep shelves only three quarters full for the ease of getting things on and off the shelves. It's such a pleasant experience to not have to fight to get something or put something back and the same is true in our kitchens or any cupboards in our homes! Great video!
As a librarian, I can confirm, we try hard to avoid letting the shelves fill up completely. I've been simplifying our home a lot and it's so nice not to have to shuffle things around constantly! Love your channel, Dawn - uplifting and practical! Who could ask for more? 🥰
Love your greenish blue eyes so much! ♡ Thank you for your constant work & inspiration! ☆ You both are so cute, lovely and warm, please never stop teaching us!!
💃💪🚴Exercising from home has been a godsend for me! For a long time I'd lost hope of even going for a walk again due to illness and injuries, but it turns out even a few minutes of exercise at a time adds up to lots of improvement! Making it easy and FUN has made all the difference. : - ) Watching TV while doing a few reps with hand weights kept by the couch - Dancing to a music video on my laptop while things are heating in the microwave - Adding a shelf to my stationary bike so I can scroll while peddling (this works so well I needed a timer so I don't go too long and re-injure myself!). It *feels* good to move! 🌈🌱🌿💐🍀💖
Love it! You two make me wish even harder that I had a sister! Glad my girls have each other. I wish I had listened to my parents and not gone to an expensive college but here I am with student loans! Great lesson for our kids one day!
I have a Twin who is also 60 seconds older than me. Every birthday I remind her of that !!! Haha. Though, she could say to me, " You know, when I was your age....." We Love being TWINS. We both married guys named Matt. Haha. . I enjoy listening to your channel and told my identical twin sister to watch as well.
I think the two of you are pure joy! And real! The walking thing, 15-20 minutes, outside at any time when the sun is out, has changed my entire outlook. (Portland has what is known as "unicorn moments", when the sun is out, even if it's raining)
I have four kids as well- 4,5,7, and 8 ( 3 of which are boys 😂) so it can be a little chaotic especially when they get home from school and are stimulated for that so I have started having them read for 15 min when they get home and it has made a huge difference in our nights, the kids are much calmer and we have less meltdowns after school!! I love your channel ❤️
Thanks for reminding me about the “6 Minute” wind-down on the Kindle. I used to do that all the time. Then I switched to the iPad and I began to lose sleep. Love the Kindle idea. It lulls you to sleep!
Omg Diana's son is soooooo soooo cute!!! I love the relationship you two share. I'm an only child 😞 but now I have two daughters and it's the best. Love watching them interact. OK..... Back to binge watching. Lety from Chicago ❤️
I really need to make time to read books again. I used to love reading but found I would ask the kids just to wait a few more minutes and I would go do whatever they asked me. But often I would get sucked in for another 15 minutes or so. Then I felt guilty so I decided to quit reading. But I do think if I would just read before bed because they are already in theirs it would work wonderfully. I have been minimizing all FB groups and removed all games from my phone. This is helping me immensely with not wasting as much time. I’m very pleased about all the minimizing that I have been carrying on in different aspects of my life and can’t wait to see what a change they make in our family. Thank you both so much for being so real and relatable! ❤️
There are great ways to get a great workout at home in 15-20 mins (and longer if you want). But when starting...15mins works great! Thank you BettyRocker and RUclips 😊 Enjoying your videos! From another MN mommy!
Great video! I'll have to try the reading a fiction book before bed. I liked your sister saying this was the 4th gym she's quit. I think I'm about to quit my 3rd or 4th one. You're right about walking. I walked off 175lbs. As soon as I quit, I put the weight back on (there were a few other factors with the weight gain). I always regretted quitting walking. Y'all inspired me to get back at it. Thanks again for the great video!
Such good insight! I find all those things to be true and great reminders, even though it's common sense. It's encouraging.😁 I find reading an actual book (not a digital copy) to my 9 yr old at her bedtime really relaxes me and makes me feel happy & content knowing I am spending quality time with her at the end of each day. It's good for her. And it's good for me. Then I am also ready to fall into bed. Just a few chapters a night... it's medicine!
I love reading a real tangible ,in my hand , book. Especially before I go to sleep. Probably because it engages the imagination and takes me to a different place in my thoughts. Since being involved with RUclips ( as a viewer) I have gotten so drawn in because I love learning and information about all sorts of things.... a blessing and a curse. Mostly because I find it hard to pull myself away and get too involved in discovering more and more info. While that that has been invigorating and a wonderful tool reading a book is far more peaceful. One of you mentioned not having the phone in the bedroom and while it might be challenging at first that is something that I need to do. I think I would become less engaged in the interest and fascination of other people’s lives and more productive in my own. That being said, I enjoy your channel. 😊 Blessings.
Great video, as always. You two are a blessing to all of us. (Although I can’t imagine giving up my daily workout at our CrossFit gym, or my 3x per week runs. Those are my “me” time, and they help keep me healthy emotionally as well as physically.) Much love and thanks to you both. 😊
I’m still making my first pass at decluttering. You are so right, it feels like I’m getting rid of sooooo much but I know I could be getting rid of even more. Some areas, when I get done, I will say “I’ll be back later to get rid of more” 😂😂😂
I have been trying to read more at night. Because I was getting headaches if I was looking at a screen too late into the night. The only trouble was that is the time I was using to do a language learning app. I think it was probably all definitely too stimulating the reading is so much better. I think both Dawn and Diana are fantastic!
So much knowledge here. I love to read and I read every night before bed, too. It’s so relaxing and I look forward to it every night. I would like to start walking for exercise. I need to. I’ve gained some weight and feel ugh. I used to do Jazzercise and I enjoyed it but I’m just not able to afford the cost. Plus, it was very hard on my joints. And I just crave the quiet time. I don’t really want to have to be miss social in a class or gym because it’s not me. I’m having a hard time making the first step. I love your channel. The faith and simple living videos are my favorite...even recommended them to my pastor who hurt her back and is laid up on her couch resting....I told her to check out minimal mom! ❤️😉
I love to read and have a Kindle, which is one of the best things ever, and I prop it up on my treadmill and read while I walk. Its lighted so it's easy to see and you just have to tap the screen to turn the page. I also have a card game I play on it for the second half of my walk. Makes the 45-60 minutes on the treadmill go by fast.
Another great talk from you ladies! You both are always so right on! I can so relate to that gym thing they've never worked out for me I've gotten memberships I never use them and I've learned I am a workout at home person much more convenient and going for walks is lovely. Blessings!
#3. I just watched this video in bed at midnight. Loving your videos here in the UK, loads of fab & realistic advice. Turning my phone off & going to sleep.
Love you both so much! Not sure if I've mentioned this here before, but I have identical twin brothers. They're a year and a day younger than me. Growing up, most people thought we were triplets. We loved it! I also have a sister who is 11 months older than me (my Irish twin). We were all best friends!
Totally trying that!! We almost never use the dishwasher (my kids are 17 and 20, so we're just two empty nesters a good bit of the time) I'm going to put stuff in there and if I don't use it after the summer, gone. Brilliant.
First of all, that is the cutest baby ever! Second, I heard that cuddling your partner helps you fall asleep faster, so I've been doing that and it works. I like to read before bed, too.
Yes, totally agree with not taking out gym membership, I've wasted thousands of euro over the years on them! At least I've finally learned my (very expensive) lesson, won't be making the same mistake again lol 😁
I love watching you two. This was great! I've recently tried to improve my sleep hygiene by doing sudoku in one of those cheap little puzzle books you buy at the newsagents. I can't usually stay awake past two puzzles.
I love watching both of you. So many good inspirational tips. I've never been able to acclimate to a gym. Never felt comfortable there. I am very interested in your spiritual journey. Do you attend a non denominational church? I am searching for a good one. My husband died in 2014 after a 10 year battle with early onset dementia. I am realizing as time goes on that you really do need a community around you. Thanks again for all your positive talks.
Nice video. I enjoy your sisterly banter. My comment is not so much about what someone told me that I wish I'd listened to but more along the lines of habits I wish I'd established in my younger years. I'm in my sixties and I wish I'd have established a habit of some sort of outside physical activity. Walking would probably have worked the best. And yoga. Trust me, you'll wish you had the flexibility yoga provides when you get older. :-) Diane you said something about the gym not necessarily being something you could sustain over the long haul and I agree completely. I wish we could find something early in our lives that we enjoy and would be part of us in all the seasons of our lives. Specifically I think of the English and their love of a good walk. I'm looking forward to your Instant Pot video and look forward to Dawns 3 things she wishes she would have listened to Diane about. :-)
I just found your y-tube channel this weekend. I LOVE YOU!! I also cook because I need to, I've never liked it. Your sister's cute too!. Keep the instant pot receipes coming. Thank you so much!!
I have noticed after scaling way back on Facebook and Instagram that I am a lot hapier. I found myself getting caught up in drama and being angry. Thank you for the reminder that I don't need all that. It was great to see you and your sister twice this week. You have a beautiful friendship.
Me too, Katherine! I noticed that with myself I actually had one "friend" get not so kind with words at me because I didn't keep her in the loop, then, msg me in demanding ways. We don't need the negativity that media can often bring. I love how Dawn & Diana bring positivity and wisdom ⚘💚⚘💚
Dawn, is it ok to have YOUR RUclips videos playing, with the phone screen turned completely off, before bed? 🤗 I feel like you (and your twin sister) are my actual, new, best friends! You motivate, encourage, and teach me in a very special, genuine, healthy, Christian way (I love your Sunday videos, too, big time!). I SOOO wish we lived in the same general area... like at most 10 minutes driving distance apart. No further. Seriously. 🤗😁💐🥰😇🥳 As far as what I should have listened to you (or someone else) about... I am learning NOT to “should” on myself... or on others... because you cannot change the past AND when you refrain from “shoulding” on yourself, you CAN learn from those painful, poor-decision moments that can actually turn out to be useful tools to help you when it comes time to make similar decisions from now on (in a way, it’s like using the bad for good). I love you and your family so much! I do hope to be able to meet you in person some day. 💐🤗🙏😁🌷
I'm the only one in my close family that is more on the minimalist side. My mom is the go to person if you need something, you just ask her if she has it before buying it, lol. I'm slowly working on her ❤
Do have workout videos on RUclips . I watch the belly buster one and getting rid of the Muffin top. These are real helpful. I try to do them in the morning during the week.
So it’s 10:16 PM and time for me to wash up and get in bed, actually I’m a little late and doing so but, I’m going to read some of my fiction book as you suggest rather than watching more RUclips videos! Thanks for the reminder!
Thank u!! ((Sigh))....as i lay there TRYING to get to sleep..watchin' one youtube video after another..when a long time ago i had actually told myself to read as trying to get to sleep...thanks for the reminder!! Just in the last few weeks had taken to youtube videos and social media excessively at bed time ..AGREED..DOESNT WORK..THANKS for this MUCH NEEDED reminder!!!!
LOL I'm listening to you while at planet fitness while doing my 30 min weights work out😉But, I totally understand about not joining a gym. Unless, of course, you wait until age 46 and you're like me and declutter the treadmill, the pilates machine, and the total gym machine collected after 25 yrs of marriage.....and the gym is 3 min away, $10 a month, and your kids are nearly grown ( youngest is 18 ) hahaha and you actually have tons of time😊 Could have never done it with littles! I used to walk on the treadmill then to be near them! Yep! I've decluttered our excess lock and lock container sets ( what was I thinking, to collect them?!) Live & Learn😁 And, DH and I have stuck to the rule of no tv in the bdrm, never seemed necessary to have that. We are down to one T.V. now. The kids had a TV in their bedroom starting as teens, but I if I had to do that over again, I'd not have that either. Live & Learn! Better late than never😁Now, if only cell phones weren't a necessity ((smiles))
This was a cute video. I so agree about the gym. I was just doing physical therapy and just finished. And even that twice a week was so hard because I had to schedule it at night on nights when my husband would be home from work to watch the kids and then I had to leave and it's cold and dark and then the amount of time I was gone (between travel time and checking in and actual working out time) was so long. It was really helpful and necessary but not at all sustainable. I honestly am not really into walking but was motivated by your videos and some from another RUclipsr that I watch who is a stay at home mom and works out at home. I just started doing work outs by Fitness Blender and I highly recommend them for anyone looking to work out at home. They have hundreds of videos on RUclips, they're super down to earth and realistic and honest, and their work outs are fun. They have a lot that don't need any equipment but the ones that do only need an adjustable weight dumbbell. I invested in the one they use (PowerBlock brand, one that goes from 3-24 pounds) and it's perfect for me and wasn't too expensive and takes up very little space. It's actually fun and easy and sustainable. I've been working out in the afternoon with my kids around (almost 3 and 5) and they like to watch and do some of the exercises, lol.
Omg, the ad for the new scary movie coming up scared the crap out of me. I'm doing RUclips before bed right now. Lol. And my bowl of cocoa pebbles cereal.😁 I got rid of all books. Guess i could read some kids books before bed. Lol, she has some good kids national geographic books. Looking forward to the new cooking at home series.
Oh goodness, I HATE that ad too!!! I use the kindle app on my phone, but kids books would be a change of pace...Tom would probably think I'd lost my mind if he came in and I was reading one of their books!!! ;) ;) ;)
I had a membersip once to a gym that was my NEIGHBOUR. I still didn’t go haha. YT workouts are the best for me , It’s so easy, I don’t even need to wear clothes :P
Love these little nuggets of wisdom😀 I actually enjoyed my gym membership for a season, but now find myself unmotivated because I'd rather be outside walking or doing a FREE 20 min RUclips workout at home. So, I'm probably gonna cancel.
I have a question for Diana in regards to the ethnic cooking going on ;-) Does she have a special exhaust fan above the stove? I have been looking for good degreaser so I am going to try the Krud Kutter you used. Thanks for sharing :-)
at the time 3:17, one of you (probably Diana) is pulling a wire bin out of a kitchen cabinet. Can you tell me where you got those? I have very little cabinet space and I think one of those would help me better utilize my one food cabinet. thank you in advance!
I would love to see the list of books you would recommend. I love your channel. I, too, always click Like before I even watch the video because I know I'm going to love it and I want to support you.
Hi I'm Debra. I have some cute coffee cups in my dishwasher they've been there for 2 months. I'm going to give them to the Goodwill aren't you proud of me.
I didn't read much during my first marriage (36 years). I've been cleaning out....either donating or tossing....I now have almost 40 empty totes....yay....go me! Thanks for your encouraging videos....

I feel exactly the same!
Your videos make me happy, because you are so joyful besides giving such practical ideas. Love, Love, Love you channel!
Thank you Denise, I greatly appreciate that!!! :)
We all need more joyful people in our lives and you and Diana are that. I enjoy every video you make because of your helpful hints and happy demeanor!
Just love your channel. It's a breath of fresh air !!! Thanks and God bless!!!!!

Hahaha, right!?! ;)
Your gym comments are so me! You both are fabulous
Glad to hear we aren't alone!!!! 😉❤️😘

I do 100% of my reading on my phone. Because of this, I read a ton more than I have in years past. Reading before bed has been amazing for me too!

Ah, that's so sweet, thank you Jennifer!
Blessings!
I've found that crocheting before I go to bed helps me sleep.
#3. I just watched this video in bed at midnight. Loving your videos here in the UK, loads of fab & realistic advice. Turning my phone off & going to sleep.
Practical info! I LOVE DIANE’S hair in this video! So cute!!
Brilliant.
Yes! Such a great idea!!
My very last thing to do before bed is to binge watch your videos! If one is good, 10 is better!
First of all, that is the cutest baby ever! Second, I heard that cuddling your partner helps you fall asleep faster, so I've been doing that and it works. I like to read before bed, too.
Oops watching RUclips before bed ;)
Yes, totally agree with not taking out gym membership, I've wasted thousands of euro over the years on them! At least I've finally learned my (very expensive) lesson, won't be making the same mistake again lol 😁
Love this! Love when you guys pair up for videos. We might need to double up on Dawn and Diana time :)
We hope to do more in the near future!!! THANK YOU!!! 😘
My
husband died in 2014 after a 10 year battle with early onset dementia.
Glad to hear this Katherine!! And THANK YOU!!! :)
Me too, Katherine! I noticed that with myself
I actually had one "friend" get not so kind with words at me because I didn't keep her in the loop, then, msg me in demanding ways. We don't need the negativity that media can often bring. I love how Dawn & Diana bring positivity and wisdom ⚘💚⚘💚
@@Julie-ok5fr , I am so sorry that happened to you. That definitely doesn't sound like a true friend.
You and your sister are awesome!! Love your friendship and sharing!
Love to see both of you on the videos. Thanks for sharing.💘
Dawn, is it ok to have YOUR RUclips videos playing, with the phone screen turned completely off, before bed? 🤗
I feel like you (and your twin sister) are my actual, new, best friends! You motivate, encourage, and teach me in a very special, genuine, healthy, Christian way (I love your Sunday videos, too, big time!). I SOOO wish we lived in the same general area... like at most 10 minutes driving distance apart. No further. Seriously. 🤗😁💐🥰😇🥳
As far as what I should have listened to you (or someone else) about...
You guys are fabulous life coaches.
Oh shoot! If I don't watch RUclips before bed, when will I watch your channel? Lol!! Love your channel and practical ideas. Thank you so much!
I'm the only one in my close family that is more on the minimalist side. My mom is the go to person if you need something, you just ask her if she has it before buying it, lol.
I'm slowly working on her ❤
I work out on the home elliptical while I watch your RUclips videos 😊
Do have workout videos on RUclips . I watch the belly buster one and getting rid of the Muffin top. These are real helpful. I try to do them in the morning during the week.
You guys are great together God bless you both!
Loved this. You are both so lovely and positive and I was feel so great after watching your videos!!! Loved the gym advice!
I Agree! No gym and definitely read before bed.
Great idea about the reading, will try that tonight.. love you guys
Somehow I missed this. What a great video!
Love you guys!! Can't wait to see your video on the instant pot!!
Thank you Colleen!!! :)
I find that watching boring travel videos is my lullaby! Love falling asleep while strolling in Rome with a very boring guide😂
Your intro makes me smile every time because we have the same shower curtain 😄
Ah, love that!!! ❤️👍😊
I *love* you 2 together SO much
LOL I'm listening to you while at planet fitness while doing my 30 min weights work out😉But, I totally understand about not joining a gym.
You two together make me laugh and smile :)
Lol. And my bowl of cocoa pebbles cereal.😁
I got rid of all books. Guess i could read some kids books before bed. Lol, she has some good kids national geographic books.
Looking forward to the new cooking at home series.
Oh goodness, I HATE that ad too!!! I use the kindle app on my phone, but kids books would be a change of pace...Tom would probably think I'd lost my mind if he came in and I was reading one of their books!!! ;) ;) ;)
@@TheMinimalMom 😂😆
I had a membersip once to a gym that was my NEIGHBOUR. I still didn’t go haha. YT workouts are the best for me ,
It’s so easy, I don’t even need to wear clothes :P
6 minutes of reading? I can do that!!! 80% whoa! Thank you!
Is there a reverse of this? Might be interesting. I enjoy you both so much. Thanks for great content.
I agree your relationship is wonderful ! Both of you were personal trainers ? How did that lead to your current jobs and is Diana a stay at home mom ?
Love your channel! Any videos for first time moms. Thx
Dawn, we think the same way! Loved the video.
Oh good, I love that!!!! :)
You have motivated me to leave the gym.......i m struggling to find time
Love these little nuggets of wisdom😀 I actually enjoyed my gym membership for a season, but now find myself unmotivated because I'd rather be outside walking or doing a FREE 20 min RUclips workout at home. So, I'm probably gonna cancel.
Yes, amen!!! ❤️
Wow if I lived out there on property in s such a gorgeous place I'd just walk!
My brain is so broken that TV comedy does it for me but, my phone/ RUclips or reading on my phone can keep me up.
Oh my goodness I get no where reading because I get tired after like 3 pages 😂 takes me forever to finish a book but I love to read 😋
This was a great video idea! Love you two!
Thank you Shannon!!!! :)
Audiobooks! Lovely blog.
I have a question for Diana in regards to the ethnic cooking going on ;-) Does she have a special exhaust fan above the stove? I have been looking for good degreaser so I am going to try the Krud Kutter you used. Thanks for sharing :-)
You two are hilarious! Love it! So relatable xx
I actually still have our glasses! Well, one broke a couple of years ago, so just 1. We just celebrated 25 years of marriage
You two are adorable!
at the time 3:17, one of you (probably Diana) is pulling a wire bin out of a kitchen cabinet. Can you tell me where you got those? I have very little cabinet space and I think one of those would help me better utilize my one food cabinet. thank you in advance!
Reading brings on slow breathing...so we relax and then get sleepy.
I just love you both! Such a cute video 💗
Ok, what books do you recommend? Looking for new stuff...
Good question! I'm working on a list right now and I'll share it SOON!
The Minimal Mom I would love a list from you!
@@TheMinimalMom have you posted this book list somewhere? 😁
I would love to see the list of books you would recommend. I love your channel. I, too, always click Like before I even watch the video because I know I'm going to love it and I want to support you.
Such a sweet video - thank you for sharing!
Hi I'm Debra. I have some cute coffee cups in my dishwasher they've been there for 2 months. I'm going to give them to the Goodwill aren't you proud of me.
What is that wall color? Beautiful kitchen!
