You can teach an old dog new tricks. You just proved it! So true about artists missing the hair in front of the ear. This old dog learned a lot. Thanks!
I needed this lesson so badly. I’m taking art classes for the first time at the age of 60. My teachers talk about where to put the mouth but no one ever says THE BOTTOM of the mouth. They must assume I heard it in grade school.
I especially enjoy the fact ,that your tutorials are quite direct and without the useless scholarly ramblings that many of the online artists fill their clips with.
Duuuuuuuuude....... youve helped my drawings more than anyone on RUclips, any art teacher I've had, any book..etc!! Please don't stop making videos!!!!! I swear if ou charged a fortune for these tutorials, I'd gladly pay!!...but I'm glad you don't :P lol
This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "step by step drawing portraits from photographs" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Qonubrey Wenria Domination - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my co-worker got cool success with it.
I watched this while sitting in front of a mirror. My ears start at mid-eye and end about the top of my upper lip. My mouth, with "resting" face, is the width between the inside of the irises. Now I should try a self-portrait sketch. Also impressed that it was all done with the infamous 2H pencil. (Geez! And I went out and got a set of "drawing" pencils, yesterday!
You are Amazing! I've learned more (as a beginner) from watching this one video from you than from the many I've watched the last 4 months combined!! Thank you so kindly!! 👍🙂
Your tutorials are fantastic, the guidelines are so clearly explained. I've been able to follow and amaze myself with my results. It's just so satisfying! Thank you.
Your explaining on the eye measurement at 5:11 had me confused for a minute. I wasn't sure what you were refering to. It would have been more clear if you actually used your own eye for reference. Besides that confusion, I love the rest of the tutorial. Thank you.
I've watched a lot of face tutorials and this was the clearest, most concise explanation yet. Helpful, even though I I thought I had it down. Thank you!
Omg you’re a REALLY amazing teacher!!! I haven’t seen anyone yet teach how to draw with such clarity and with explaining each step so well!!! Thanks to you I finally understand proportions way better and how to measure!! Thanks SO MUCH!!
These are the time-honored techniques of some of the masters, like Michelangelo and DaVinci! The eye is used as a basic unit of measurement for the full frontal portrait. There is also, based on these techniques, one eye's height between the bottom of the nose and the top edge of the upper lip of the mouth. One eye's width from the bottom of the lower lip to the edge of the chin directly underneath, as well as from the corners of the mouth to the edge of the jawline at approximately a 45 ° angle. The head is generally used as a measuring tool for the height of the human body; eight heads high for a male, seven to seven and a half heads for a female's height. Again, these principals apply only to a frontal portrait viewsd straight on, as if from the artist's eye level.
Random Question: Could you please make a tutorial series combining art and language such as... the right side of the face labels could be English eyes, nose, lips, etc and the left side of the face could be French yeux, nez, lèvres
Thank you for this tutorial. This makes so much sense now. It was really easy to follow and also really basic. Nothing too extreme haha. Thanks again. I'll for sure use the guidelines and tips for my portraits now.
I soooo love this.. i love to draw but i never use any measurements or devide the face or cut them into something coz i never draw anybody i just draw people on my mind. But i want to learn how to draw somebody who exist and this video will be the beggining of my journey.. ;) thank u sooo much 😁
Thank you for mentioning that these are just guidelines depending on what a person looks like. Some people draw everything to these proportions and then their drawings look generic. When you say base of the nose, do you mean the nostrils? I have noticed some people have very long noses and their mouths seem closer... But maybe it is just the end of their noses that is longer. Does the eye measurement include the little tear duct?
Hehe I am still a kid and was totally making my shoulders WAY broader than they are. I later measured my own shoulders proportionate to my head and It worked better. the head totally helps
amazing.I'm your new subscriber and love your drawings. The way of your teaching is really very good. I want to ask you that make many more and i'll try every thing☺ From Pakistan😉
Yey another lefty I hate pen/pencil marks I get on my little finger lol thank you for this tutorial I’m gonna have to try this now a big thumbs up from me
Precision, precision, precision, yes! I realize everyone doesn't have exactly the same features and that those features aren't formed in a cookie_cutter. Yet, there are certainly some basics or general guidelines to get one there.
Thank you, Jessica, This tutorial was so informative, and truly generous in the advice given. Can't thank you enough: it made me want to practise which as you say is key to getting it right. Many thanks!
I've been doing a little maths and I think that one eye width is about the length of the face divided by 5. For example is your face is 10cm then one eye might be around too. Divide this by half to get the radius of the circle (in this case 1cm). Use a compass to draw a one cm circle. The diameter (or length) should be two. Use this as an eyeball and draw in the eyelid, iris, pupil etc and then draw the exact same circle (1 radius, 2cm length) on the other side( You should have an eye in between) and then add in the eyelid and details
Anyone here bc their art teacher told them to draw themselves for Art class during corona? 🤦🦠

The best tutorial about proportions on youtube, congrats
Sad that this girl teaches you more than a teacher your paying for. They just tell you to do it but don't talk about proportions.
IceCola yeah it is L

Thank you! It's wonderful that you include some anatomy. It makes proportions go easier and helps to visualize differences in faces.
