Another fascinating listen, this is quickly becoming my favourite podcast. Love the varying viewpoints and the compassionate approach, while still asking the very diffcult questions. Fair play to Alan, what a great example to all who have been effeced by the troubles
Another excellent interview John. I have nothing but respect for Alan after listening to his perspective and account. We can all learn a lot from him. As a Southern Irish Republican who was raised in a CoI tradition, I believe strongly that forgiveness and compromise on all sides will be necessary for a lasting peace on this island. That means all of us giving up some of our identity to create a new republic that respects and welcomes people of all traditions and backgrounds. Reading some of the comments above it’s a disappointing reality that this still such a long way off but it’s inevitable and we will get there sooner or later.
Thanks Alan for your story. I was from North Belfast like yourself and left in 89. We can all take a leaf out of your book (forgiveness) and move on. Good luck with your future.
Point of order John , Northern Ireland wouldn’t “rejoin” , they didn’t leave , the 26 counties ‘left’ , Northern Ireland simply stayed within the United Kingdom. 100 years of sporadic murder and violence couldn’t force the British people to join the republic , so it would seem unlikely that they would go quietly now.
@@barneymagee3285 and the British are already a minority in Ireland north. All of Europe will be in a minority in 30 years so what’s your point? And I won’t be receiving anything as I don’t live in Ireland
The 6 counties were carved out in order to maintain a "hundred year" majority, hence why NI is not Ulster. For there to be a united Ireland it must come from or at least consider the unionist/orange tradition, anything else will only result in more bloodshed. Unfortunately mixed schools are still in the minority, division and "us and them," is a learnt/taught behaviour, not a natural disposition
I don't understand the Title, Murder", The British invaders call their side of the Conflict in Ireland, "War", as do most Irish People that know their History. Murder is a Crime on Civilians intentionally. A Colonial War in a foreign Land is totally different .

UVF also killed two prison officers. William Burns 1980 and James Peacock 1993.
Very interesting, great content as always ❤
