your ability to make me see my favorite albums in a whole new way is unmatched. it feels like hearing the songs for the first time again, so magical and profound. i appreciate your hard work so deeply! another banger!!
This comment said it perfectly! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about blond!!! I wanna hear that again for the first time! 2016 was unmatched
I've always been a bigger fan of channel orange than blonde. The theme of unrequited love, and how bittersweet it can be is perfectly captured in this album for me. It doesn't really pull any punches when it comes to how dark this album can get, but still keep you in the feeling of yearning and hoping for something better. This was a really good video, and I don't know if you did this before, but I really liked how you used clips from other shows in a different context to show what some of the lyrics meant. And just like last time, I really liked the input from the other people about each song
As always thanks for watching 🔥🔥 i’m glad you noticed the tv references && yea this album doesn’t shy away from how dark it is lyrically but i love the contrast of the fun pop sound it has that kinda misleads you on the first listen
Honestly, I prefer blonde, but there is a hidden jewel in channel orange that no one seems to grasp. Pink Matter is my favourite frank ocean song at the moment.
Channel Orange came out at the same time I went through my first real heartbreak. This video helped me realize why I identified with the album so deeply. (The outro to this video is so beautiful)
I’ll never forget when I first heard thinking of you on tumblr. It was the first time I ever heard of Frank. Channel orange is my favorite album of all time. Pyramids is a masterpiece. The first time I ever heard it blew my mind. Bad religion is beautifully tragic. The whole project is perfect!
Whether it was through its unique sound that was quite frankly way ahead of its time, or the tear jerking poetic beauty of Frank's lyrics, Channel Orange has always had and will undoubtedly always have an incredibly massive hold on me. Aside from the absolute sonic masterpiece that this album is, the layers of coded messages through genius lyricism that you just opened my eyes to are endless. Thank you for helping me elevate towards a new level of appreciation and understanding for one of my favourite artists, and works of art of all time. There is a depth and authenticity to you and your projects that is very hard to come by, it's a breath of fresh air.
at 41:47 I think Frank intended from "Samson" to be the biblical charcater Samson that received his power from his hair, it is most likely the reason he emphasises "and his full head of hair" in the line following. Historically their timelines do no cross but just the fact that Samson has full head of hair he is at his strongest which really plays into the protaganist's insecurity that was confirmed when Cleopatra used him to cheat on the the protaganist. Just my two cents, awsome video spot on with everything as usual.
To take it further, I think his "full head of hair" indicating that cleopatra knows that this Samson character has a mortal, fatal weakness (the cutting of his hair), and has not chosen to exploit it due to her being caught in the illusion. One snip of the scissors and this could be all over and the kingdom returned. But....he still has a full head of hair.
I never knew that pyramids had that much depth! All these years i thought it was just a groovy song but my jaw dropped when i got to your breakdown of it
I got a theory that tinking bout you and forest gump is about his first love and that he is still very much in love with him but since frank didn't get the love back that he needed, he "swithed chanels" to distract him self like many of us do (watch the tv to forget sumting). And so the songs between tinking bout you and forest gump are sort of fiktional and tell storys, not from franks life but from his imagination. With i think means that the relation ships and such after his first love are not "real" since his hart still belongs to his first lover. (Sry for any speling mistakes)
this is such a beautiful video essay, not just visually but the actual content itself is so well explained and profound, don't stop doing this man it's too good
love your interpretations and how you outline Frank’s personal arc across all the stories! I always read the line from Pink Matter “Sensei went quiet then violent” as a lesson to Frank on exorcising (and i guess also straight up exercising) those swirling existential thoughts on matters far beyond his control and comprehension. Sandwiched between Bad Religion and Forrest Gump, it feels like a huge turning point. He goes from spinning out in the cab to sparring and, exhausted realizing that nothing matters-and eventually like Forrest Gump running, moving forward
thanks so much for watching and leaving this comment! I agree the thre song run at the end of the album is super transformative and it’s really where we see a lot of the growth that we were waiting for throughout the story I look forward to seeing you again on my channel 🤞🏾
