His "cancellation" was successful because Daniel offended his core listeners, black women at the time. Daniel really undermines how important it is for an artist to have that core, loyal audience. Black fans are really important to a black artist career, as they are first supporters to these black artists. I think Brent faiyaz benefitted from his downfall, as he skyrocketed in fame with his album Fuck The World.
So true, me and my BW women friends were telling everyone about his work and supporting him online. I know quite a few of us did that Celie/Color Purple Hoodoo hand sign against him when he told us to cancel him, lol! WW and other non-Black women were nowhere in sight when he dropped the next album after his declaration! I hollered when I saw those lackluster unit sales. Hard lesson to learn when you publicly turn against your o.g. core supporters.
Self hate is one hell of a drug. If he truly loved himself he would surround himself with better people who actually genuinely have his best interest at heart.
His cancellation was successful bc he’s not conventionally attractive. Chris Brown still has packed concerts after being abusive to multiple women and just an overall supervillain. These celebs say wild stuff regularly and it’s soon forgotten. People genuinely do not care about antiBlackness or misogynior. People care about “ugly” people having opinions they don’t like.
OOOOOOOOOO I was looking for this comment ! Beautifully said. Mainstream beauty always holds up and its extremely unfortunate. Considering that some people will never have a chance to get up there, without following this "mainstream beauty". Smh. 10/10 comment.
like the nazi character from the boys said "people love what i say, they just don't like the word nazi", is not the same exemple but is the same principle
That album molded my life as well. Had just got in a very serious car accident and just made me appreciate life and love for others. I still cry hearing the song Freudian because I feel like I was being such a fuck up at that time. I’m also my moms second son so it hits DIFFERENT.
Daniel is one of the few celebrities I’ve seen that genuinely got cancelled. It’s hard for me to have much sympathy since he literally asked for it. Freudian is still a fantastic album and I’ll always appreciate it, but I don’t think I can look at Daniel the same.
He ain't even say nothing that bad. He defended some white girl who tweeted something that was like 4th degree racist maybe, and then a bunch of black people came back at her in droves saying actual racist shit to her which happens all the time. his comments were mostly about the double standards but y'all wanna somehow claim he hates black women which makes no sense.
@@KCAssassin984th degree racist? Lol. No it was just simply racist and she was rightfully called out on it from the Black community. Daniel not only put on his cape for a trash industry whore, he proceeded to gaslight and then dare the Black community- a significant portion of his fan base - to cancel him and they did. 😂 What’s wilder is Jules didn’t even attempt to reach out let alone publicly defend him afterwards. She just let his black ass hang there. 😬 Wild stuff. But at least he learned his lesson. Enough time has passed where a comeback is possible.
Everyone feels its ok to $hit on black women, we hold the purse string in the black community and I think we have a right to not support people who disrespect and degrade us. Daniel is very talented, I am sure his other fans have been supporting him, right.
Yes! This is it! He def has a fan base, but I was a huge fan and would have supported him. Now, he doesn't get my streams. Black women have power. He better pivot and switch genres or something.
If words were so powerful, I’d be a millionaire by now and Trump would be dead. Reality doesn’t work like that. He got cancelled because he disrespected his target audience. Plain and simple. Same thing happened to Sabrina Claudio when those racist tweets resurfaced. She didn’t ask to be cancelled, it was because she disrespected her main audience. Black ppl are the largest demographic that listens to R&B music.
Just because someone writes beautiful music, that doesn't make him wise. He was a very young dude who came into fame virtually overnight but really had alot of growing up to do. You have to understand, the things we say and do and believe in when we're in our 20s may be very different from our 30s, 40s, and beyond. I'm a Black woman and a Mom to a son. I wish this young Black gifted artist the best of luck in all his endeavors going forward.
This is why we say “Black people are not a monolith.” He’s first gen Canadian, Black Jamaican immigrant parents… despite his music appealing to, and being inspired by Black American people, he didn’t understand the Black American experience. The Black experience varies place to place. African Americans have different experiences than Nigerians have different experiences than Black Brits have different experiences than South Africans have different experiences than Black Cubans have different experiences from Jamaicans and so on. Ofc, there’s genetic and cultural overlap. We have shared roots but we are not all the same. We all have to try to be empathetic and work to educate ourselves. Too many people outside of the African American community like to police us and tell us how we should feel. No one has the right to tell someone from a community they aren’t a part of, certainly if you are not educated on the group, how they should react towards oppression and bigotry. That’s the mistake he made. The public’s mistake was assuming a first Gen Jamaican Canadian kid from the suburbs fully understood the African American community, its struggles and it history. 🤷🏽♀️ I didn’t like him for years because he said what he said in a time when Black men were constantly degrading Black women and just wreaking of internalized racism and it turned me off but I’m glad I saw this video and learned of his redemption.
Yes, very well expressed! Is it a naive dream to want us all to unify on the one main point that we (meaning Black folks) all originated from the same place, the Motherland, Africa no matter where we ended up in the Diaspora???? (And thereafter educate ourselves accordingly about our brother?)
I haven't watched the video yet. I'm a black, British, Caribbean. I have Jamaican heritage. For me and my friends, he said what he said about black women. To me, it wasn't directed to African American women. He also discarded US to stand up for a RACIST woman. In this instance, most women across the diaspora said no, thank you to his music.
I will literally always remember being on the toilet in 2019 and watching this IG live. I was SCREAMING at my phone for him to shut up. As soon as he said "black people can stop listening to me - I don't care" a single tear of agony streamed down my face and I promptly turned my phone off and went to bed. From that moment, I knew he was a goner. Still love him down but yeesh... the man did it to himself.
I won’t lie, that incident definitely affected how I seen Daniel as a person. He kind of became one of those artist where I had to tell my self to separate the Artist from the Art. I was heavily invested in his career for the longest because of the beauty of his music. However, when I heard what he said, as a black woman, it made me think, Why would I support something that doesn’t support me? I never stopped listening to his music granted if it came on the radio or if my music was on shuffle and one of his songs were in the mix. But I noticed I stopped searching for his music and when I would hear his music that’s all I would think about. Truthfully, I’m not apart of this whole cancel culture thing but for me personally I’ve always been one to believe when people are under the influence their truth comes out. And as much as it makes me happy to watch this video and that he is still moving along (as I don’t wish anything to hurt his career) I don’t think I’ll ever see him the same. Thank you for the video it was beautiful and a great project like always! ❤❤❤
I completely understand your sentiments. That rhetoric pushes negligence and narratives that we as black women DONT need. I’m glad he took accountability, but the “drunk” part got me. 😂 Honey the few times I’ve been drunk I was the “I love you, this is my Grammy speech and I want to thank all of you” drunk 🤣🤣🤣. Point is, loose lips either sail or sink ships.
So no room for growth or self discovery? Crazy. As the person said in the video many of the greats you may or may not look up to have shady pasts faaaaaar worse than the dumb comment Daniel made. If you were that seriously affected by what he said then I feel for you, but I think it’s just weird you’d keep something in your heart from a 23 year old (at the time), drunk kid with seemingly the world on his shoulders. Maybe you’re not the live and forget type of person, but damn that must be rough.
That is literally cancel culture. I think what you mean this wasn't the toxic version of it. People have a right to not support anyone they don't believe supports them. Cancel culture gets a bad rep when it leads to doxxing or when celebrities who are truly "uncancelable" whine about it i.e. Dave Chappell.
After that whole controversy I completely checked out on him 🤷🏾♀️. Didn’t even know about the apology with Nadeska. This is a SIGNIFICANTLY better apology than the last one lol. It definitely seems like he’s grown and hopefully he means it. I 100% agree that his cancellation left space for other artists to bloom. I haven’t felt like I missed his music because I found artists like Giveon and 6lack and pink$weats, so I never felt the need to keep up with him or seek out his music. Very interesting video and definitely gave me a different perspective. Maybe I’ll peek in on him and see what he’s up to.
Same, it hurt so bad when he did that. It’s like waiting to see someone win so much, wanting someone to see that talent and then POOF. He was a breathe of fresh air
Why do you reckon people are okay with supporting Giveon after what he did but not Daniel? He's apologised for his behaviour and seemingly grown. However, from what I've seen, people have criticised him to a larger extent compared to Giveon. Giveon has been allowed to flourish but this thing Daniel did seems to follow him around. Do you think you'd be able to support/respect him again? This video defs showed a different perspective.
@@Kaaaman If you watched the video, you should understand why Daniel was so heavily criticized. Not only did he disrespect and disregard the experiences of his own community, he literally TOLD the community to cancel him over his need to protect a woman who had been nothing but disrespectful to his core fanbase. He went as far as to call the oppressors “the winning team” 🤦🏾♀️ He dared the community to cancel him and then got upset when the community canceled him. The only thing I found on Giveon is that he cheated on his girlfriend. As far as I know he didn’t insult the community or support a white woman using a racial slur. He also didn’t give some bs apology where he took no accountability. It’s not comparable.
@@mochalily3735 Fair enough, I 100% think Daniel deserved it and in no way am I trying to say he didn't. It's tough that it cost him sm and he really shouldn't have addressed it on live tbh.

Daniel Ceaser is a prime example of benefiting from black american culture but actually doesn’t gaf about black americans. He’s from Canada with Caribbean parents. He meant what he said and the fact that he rushed to defend YesJulz (who is also Caribbean) should tell you everything you need to know. He’s a tether. He said he stand on that, we don’t have to listen to his music and that was it. So therefore, you get what you asked for

NEVER ENOUGH is literally on replay for me since it came out. It’s just so perfectly done, can’t get enough of it. Seperating the art from the artist has never been this hard. It just makes you think bigger artists having their “cancellation” and yet the world keeps moving bc they have bigger fanbase. Daniel doesn’t bc only certain people like him and the circle gets smaller…
Daniel Caesar’s career (thankfully) is currently in good standing. Last album was beautiful. Doing well with his features on Chromakopia, things are well.
I think it’s so crazy that he got that reaction for defending a “friend” that never defended him never once did that girl come out to defend him for taking up for her cause even she knew she was dead ass wrong
I don't think YesJulz is Daniel's "friend." I think she is a random acquaintance at best who happens to be in an adjacent industry. DC put on his cape for a suicide mission.
& that’s what he gets for trying to save a random white girl who just imitates & profits from black culture ……. She went on to have a good career with Kanye and him…. Nothing

@@lepoetress she didn’t defend because she was only worried about her white ass and still being able to profit off of black culture….shes a leech and he let her suck his blood. Now it’s his consequences. He should have known better esp with a Caribbean parent
I’m white as Casper from NY, blessed to have grown up with amazing diversity and being humbled and educated. Never in my fucking life have I heard someone around me say, “Take tips from the winning side.” That left me SPEECHLESS
He wasn’t saying that white people are “the winning side” if that’s what you’re implying. What he meant was that black people can’t think that playing the victim is going to make you win the “game” of life. The “winning team” he’s referring to is black people who refuse to acquiesce to a victim mentality. You can only rise when you refuse to “stay down” as a victim
At this point, I just stopped caring about what my favorite artists have to say outside of their bodies of work. Constantly keeping track of which people suck and which don't is a soul drain.
With more and more black people of foreign extraction gaining popularity making music, films, tv that is from Black American culture or heavily influenced by it, maybe more of them should learn to respect that they aren't of the culture and therefore shouldn't speak on our issues out of respect in the same way many don't appreciate Americans speaking on their issues. It's just having mutual respect for each other's different experiences. Hell, Meek Mill got flamed just for asking South Africans what apps they prefer to listen to music on recently.
I am sick and tired of them down playing Black Americans. They are not better for if so they wouldn't have to come up off our culture. They would be able to stay in their countries and come up off their own culture like how the Jamaicans used to when Bob Marley came out back in the day with the Reggae genre.
This was so well done. Amazingg editing, storytelling, visuals, different perspectives, everything 10 out of 10. Y’all got me I’m going to listen to his most recent album cause we really don’t give people a chance to grow and I think that’s unfortunate.

I'm exhausted of these ideologies that foreign blacks don't understand American racism. It's the same racism and open bigotry there😂 racist ideology is not something specific to the U.S., and black Americans offer so much “grace” that it gets ridiculously nauseating. Daniel is NOTHERN American, and he was trying to protect a racist because he found her attractive and thought she would appreciate his effort- she didn't care (a lot of us have male family members exactly like him.) He couldn't even say what he was wrong about, nor did he have a response about him ostracizing his core audience- black women. No but as a "foreign" black person I barely understood what racism was till I came to america. In Africa, everyone is black. I was well aware of colorism but I didn't know it could go as far as hating a whole different race. I'm just saying this from my experience. So no, its not exactly the same. He fell off to black people not the rest of the races, he has concerts in Brazil and Mexico going on now!😂 Black people are sensitive and get their feelings hurt from any little thing, and call anyone a racist that they don't agree with! Can't handle the truth, only twelve percent of blacks but they spend more money than the majority population! You are not special because you are black, GOD chose what color you will be before you was born, this generation lives off of the older generations sacrifices and claim its so hard and racist for them, and think that they can cancel an entire artist that other races that have the majority loves! Didn't know he was cancelled, but then again I rarely hear his name mentioned anymore. I was driving with my mom for about an hour and had Daniel playing. Turned her into a fan. Dudes music is perfect
The thing about Daniel’s cancellation is he asked the community to cancel him like there weren’t any other artists deserving of the fame and recognition he has. People make mistakes and I’ll always have space for people who own up to it but for him to double down in that interview… not everyone will forgive that.
He also asked people to cancel him like his white fan base was gonna hold his career up. This is what happens when someone who is raised around white people and given “opportunities” by white people forget that white people “support” only runs as deep as the core audience supporting said artist
another day another spacial banger. this was a great breakdown as someone who casually listens to daniel ceasar, heard briefly about the controversy, and didn't really understand the foundations.

I have to say that people deciding no longer to listen to his music after he dared them to, doesnt feel like the usual cancelation. No one took opportunities from him, they just PERSONALLY decided to stop listening to him. No artists is owed peoples eyes and ears, no matter how good they are. And I hear people in the comments when they say we, black people, have issues with accountability but the "hyve mind" has a purpose ( even if its often not used correctly) and that is to keep the community as a whole safe from people who'd stab is in the back for white approval ( which has happend). Being on code has a function. Our biggest issue was his biggest issue, just having opinions without all of the facts and context and nuance. Black fans are really important to a black artist career, as they are first supporters to these black artists. I think Brent faiyaz benefitted from his downfall, as he skyrocketed in fame with his album Fuck The World.
I agree with everything you said in this!
I was just thinking, he was famous but his fanbase was not that widespread quite yet.
Exactly that part bc imo the core fans will always be loyal no matter what (unless u directly spurn them).
Wait what did Brent faiyaz do???
Self hate is one hell of a drug. If he truly loved himself he would surround himself with better people who actually genuinely have his best interest at heart.

Just because someone writes beautiful music, that doesn't make him wise. He was a very young dude who came into fame virtually overnight but really had alot of growing up to do. I wish this young Black gifted artist the best of luck in all his endeavors going forward.

Yup& unfortunately there are still consequences for our poor choices and misbehaviors. Hopefully, he learns better
Well Said.

Perfectly said. Won’t be searching him out and have lost ALL respect.
So no room for growth or self discovery? Crazy. As the person said in the video many of the greats you may or may not look up to have shady pasts faaaaaar worse than the dumb comment Daniel made. That is literally cancel culture. I think what you mean this wasn't the toxic version of it. People have a right to not support anyone they don't believe supports them.
@@Kaaaman What did Giveon do? I haven’t heard of him being in any controversy.
@@Kaaaman If you watched the video, you should understand why Daniel was so heavily criticized. He dared the community to cancel him and then got upset when the community canceled him.
The only thing I found on Giveon is that he cheated on his girlfriend. As far as I know he didn’t insult the community or support a white woman using a racial slur. He also didn’t give some bs apology where he took no accountability. It’s not comparable.

THIS!
Talk about what you know, not what you think you know.
As much as I'd love to see that, stuff like all these comments showing it won't happen because there are barely consequences for it if they don't.
I am sick and tired of them down playing Black Americans. They are not better for if so they wouldn't have to come up off our culture. They would be able to stay in their countries and come up off their own culture like how the Jamaicans used to when Bob Marley came out back in the day with the Reggae genre.
Yeah but they won’t. They keep talking and I’m not sure why.
Wish Americans could do the same

People make mistakes and I’ll always have space for people who own up to it but for him to double down in that interview… not everyone will forgive that.
terrence trent darby did this shit too lol
He also asked people to cancel him like his white fan base was gonna hold his career up. This is what happens when someone who is raised around white people and given “opportunities” by white people forget that white people “support” only runs as deep as the core audience supporting said artist
I think he tried to show nuance and intelligence but the general public don’t have these things
@@boagski not intelligence. Time. People don't have time for that bs.
@@stephenp1461 lol you proved my point. Average intelligence doesn’t have time for nuance or highly intellectual thinking
another day another spacial banger. this was a great breakdown as someone who casually listens to daniel ceasar, heard briefly about the controversy, and didn't really understand the foundations.
Glad you enjoyed it and got some perspective!
Honestly after he was cancelled I hardly saw him anywhere like they scrap him. His music is beautiful but I'm sick of this but they didn't know any better narrative
A lot of parts of this video gave me goosebumps... You really captured Daniel
I can tell a lot of work went into this. Beautifully made.
Thank you very much!🙏🏾
Self hate and the need for wyte validation is why he's where he's at. He only apologized to get y'all to support again 😂 wake up fr
Exactly let the white people support.
Exactly and they're letting this apologist ass video breakdown make them dumb licks again. Dude ain't said shit until he knew he was dropping an album. Basura.
WAKE IT UP!!!
Why you act like y’all never said something you regretted before? It’s been years get over it.
@@LivenTruth And the people who were hurt don't owe me their money or forgiveness.
I’m not even kidding this post inspired me to finally listen to the rest of his albums in full
i love that!
me too
Same
this video is crazy well made fr, like from the details in his life to the editing to the clips chosen and so much more, the story you created and showed through this is amazing fr!! like art frfr
I love this community, the passion and love for music I have is so deeply understood here! Thank yall and the man himself for creating these masterpieces
This comment means the world to me 🪐❤
I love how I’m 34 and this is the first I’ve heard of this guy. This means I’m right where I wanna be- y’all have fun
cool
Brother you're seeking validation and trying to appear superior in a RUclips video's comments section. Don't try to pretend like you're better than others
@@vishnu2407mmm I didn’t really take it that way and I’ve listened to him
@@vishnu2407 I appreciate ur comment- thanku
@@vishnu2407I disagree, when you reach a certain age you can appreciate that things that seemed so important to you don’t matter anymore.
Not in a negative way that diminishes those who it matters to, but rather you’re free of those same chains that bind yourself.
I didn’t really mess with R&B for awhile until I starting hearing people like Daniel Ceaser, so this is awesome you made a video on him
Yea i had to do a video on my boy
3 minutes into this video i knew it was about to see one of the best ive seen this year
i feel like ppl don’t really understand that he WAS cancelled. he basically spit in the face of the ppl who lifted him up, and sure it was hellas ago, and he’s got other fans, but at the end of the day the black folks that were the wind in his sails had no issue dropping him. this man at his peak was going hard, he had all the greats co-signing him, all the radio stations playing his music, selling out venues, breaking streaming records… and after he asked to be cancelled, well i don’t think he’ll ever reach the heights that we all thought he would. he was supposed to be as big if not bigger than Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, etc. Sure he’s still successful but he seriously stunted his growth defending someone who didn’t deserve it. imo he’s still successful because he’s insanely talented.
HE BROUGHT IT ON HIMSELF
👀
Alright already. He apologized and took accountability. He is forgiveness. My goodness. Yall want blood. He was 22 at that. People make mistakes.
@@tajmahal8181 I think the commenter means that his cancelation was literally self-requested. That's what makes it so wild / unfortunate...
@@tajmahal8181 that wasn't a mistake. HE MEANT EVERY WORD. That DISRESPECTFUL WW was of more value to him in his eyes THEN THE ACTUAL BW AND GIRLS WHO WERE LINING HIS POCKETS AND GIVING HIM EXPOSE BY STREAMING HIS MUSIC. He said IF I'M WRONG THEN CANCEL ME F IT. He thought he was EXEMPT and found out FAT MEAT IS HELLA GREASY
@@loliwelch9151 EXACTLY. All he had to do was be quiet and focus on himself but he wanted to play Captain Save a JEALOUS RUDE ASS WW Who never told him thank you for sacrificing your career to save my scandalous racist ass
This was such a good watch, very well put together. Thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don’t think black women were his ‘core’ audience. I believe we were his ‘target audience’. He never wanted to make black music, but because he was black and soulful, he was put in the R&B category.
Just finished going back to Never Enough and I see this pop up at the perfect time tonight can’t get any better
❤️🙏🏾🪐
starting off with one of my favorite songs by him, alr know this gonna be a banger
🪐🙏🏾
Diversity wasn’t the issue or “grace” his comments were definitely anti black and caping for problematic whiteness
points were made here
what a great video, dude. proof that thorough and honest work can definitely shine a different light on someone's trajectory.
Glad you enjoyed it!

The video production and editing of your videos are S tier
thanks!
What "watch what you say, or you just might get it" looks like. People canceled him before I found out who he was.😂😂
Great video! I never knew why I hadn't seen Daniel for a while so this vid filled in the blanks. I'm happy to see him back in the game restored and matured!
love that! Thanks for watching 🖤
dave chappell hurt his feelings a lot more than he admitted
most definitely
Like Rihanna, he's one of those celebrities that isn't the greatest human at times, but the culture never holds them accountable. 😬
what did Rhianna do? 👀

First time watching your channel, and I might say, the way you made this video is A1.
i appreciate that 🤝🏾
he broke my heart when he got cancelled because he meant so much to me :( i didn't listen to him for 4 years after freudian and i randomly decided to go see him live after i heard a few tracks from his new album and ... that man is so talented it is insane?? i am still disappointed by his past comments but his recent apology seemed genuine! i just hope he learns from this
Popped up in my recommended, glad I watched this, production quality was amazing!❤

Appreciate it! 🙏🏾 feel free to check out my other work
i was at the front when he performed in toronto, and when he started creep i knew and started SOBBING… knowing how it went and what happened crushed me live at the concert❤
oh wowww thats a powerful experince
the intro gave me chills holy
Glad he was able to reflect and change, hope he gets another chance.
Beautiful story, lots of lessons to learn.
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
That intro was so good omg!
thank you 🙏🏾🔥
As a 45 yr old mom who is mostly out of the loop, this was great. I loved the editing too and the people you chose to add commentary were superb. Great job everyone! 💜💜💜
I didn’t even watch the video yet I’m just on the intro and this song is *chefs kiss*
