🎬 In this FIlmSpeak video essay we discuss, The Penguin the greatest comic book show of all time and why The Penguin is a masterpiece.
🔔 SUBSCRIBE: ruclips.net/user/fi...
In this video, we break down why The Penguin might just be the best comic book show ever. Instead of focusing on capes, gadgets, the generic idea of a comic book series, or Gotham's more iconic characters, the creators of The Penguin, Lauren LeFranc and the rest of the team, crafted a raw, character-driven crime drama with the tone and intensity of The Sopranos and worthy of the pedigree the HBO name provides - only, it’s set in the dark, gritty world of The Batman.
Following Oswald Cobb, brought to life by Colin Farrell in The Batman, this series steps beyond typical comic book tropes. It redefines what a "superhero" show can be, focusing on Cobblepot’s rise in Gotham’s underworld and his complex, morally ambiguous journey. This is a story that explores crime, loyalty, and ambition, all within the unique, haunting landscape of Matt Reeves’ Gotham. In so doing, it adapts The Penguin and the aspects of Gotham City and Batman it's depicting with respect. This is a prestigious crime drama first and a Batman show second.
Join Griffin (@griffschiller) us as we dive into what makes The Penguin stand out, why The Penguin is perfect, how The Penguin makes The Batman even better, why The Penguin is so good in this analysis of The Penguin. What did YOU think of The Penguin??🐧 One of the greatest Comic Book Shows of all time??? Comment below!💥
Definitely.
100% it’s absolutely amazing. The way this further fleshed out this version of Gotham is great. Loved it
Average at best. You couldn't tell this was a show set in the Batman universe if it didn't heavily rely on namedrops.
Colin and Cristin did an amazing job, but ultimately the writers dropped the ball and badly let them down.
Jackpot. Best TV series I seen since...... Activism.
Feature length film? If it's this good, take my money.
@@onetwo-in4mh Heavily relied on namedrops? Dropped the ball? Come on man, did you want to see Batman at least once and were watching the last episode counting down the minutes like "If he doesn't show up and defeat the penguin right now, this show sucks" Dude.
When he said "But listen, kid"… I already knew it was over
Dude...that moment...fuck...I was wrecked. So pissed. Like I shouldn't have expected any different from Oz, but like man...the guy is beyond despicable. The most hatable villain in the Reevesverse.
@@FilmSpeak I think Colin Farrell's Penguin surpasses Heath Ledger's Joker as the greatest live-action DC villain performance of all time.
I said when they were at the hospital, “I’m surprised he’s still around and that he hasn’t killed him yet.”
Cut to five minutes later…
I fully agree with you on that @@ironbro2794
Same
The part that made me sick was when Francis was about to have her finger cut off but Oz kept lying despite it being the person he supposedly cares the most about. They told him they all knew but he kept lying and even Sofia was like "what is wrong with you?". Had me stunned
Same. That scene was so uncomfortable and shows how much of a lying scumbag narcissist Oz is.
Really shows that Oz is extremely selfish and delusional. He lived with the lie for so long it became his truth. They did a great job showing that there's no lie that Oz won't tell and no line that he wouldn't cross. Truly sinister.
Yeah, he can't even admit the truth even when his mom ALREADY knows. He's so pathetic.
Vic's murder still leaves a bad taste in my mouth
I saw it as him refusing to lose. Even if everyone knows, he won’t give them the satisfaction of admitting it. Even at the cost of his mother
Oz is a guy you see eating lunch by himself in high school so you feel bad for him and ask him to join you and your friends and then realize why he was having lunch by himself because he’s a terrible person.
That is a great summary of his character
Hahaha wow that's an incredible allegory.
Probably exactly how Oz was in highschool
Thats hilarious but accurate af.
What a loser. Sitting by yourself instead of being one of us worker bees 🐝 😂. Y’all all are the same grouped up
Giving Viktor a truly meaningless death by faking a robbery gone wrong, and making him a John Doe, with no one to ever recognize him. Thrown away like a broken toy.
That was fucked up man lmao, but also AMAZING!
Literally how I saw it as well. Not only does tossing away his ID make it harder to trace Vic to Oz. But it also feels like a symbolic snub to Vic and his desire to be a somebody. He dies as just another kid in Gotham, no name. A nobody.
A cold-blooded act indeed
There was a social security card in his wallet when he looked at Vic’s id when he first met him 34:51 hopefully that leads to something in the story
It’s literally the “I don’t want to play with you anymore” scene form Toy Story 😭
More like a used tool instead of a broken toy.
The young kid that played oz did a really good job too. Perfect series all the way around
looks like him too.
@@fabiofernandes9122casting ppl in this show need raises asap
That kid’s name is Ryder Allen and he killed it! Hopefully he’s got a good career ahead of him
Lil Oz is great kid needs a spinoff show lol
reminded me of Fat Sam from Bugsy Malone lol
If Cristin Milioti doesn’t get an Emmy nomination for this show, I will be absolutely shocked.
A fuckin men to THAT!
She was phenomenal
who cares. insane performance reward or not.
Unfortunately you are in the minority when it comes to this, in the subreddit and people I talked to didn’t really like her performance, a little over the top is what I keep hearing
@@johnnydeep7540They have no clue. She played the F out of that part.
Sofia wanted to be free.
Oz locked her up.
Francis wanted to die.
Oz kept her alive.
Victor wanted to live.
Oz killed him.
Sofia could’ve gone to Italy if she wanted to be free
Vic should’ve gone on the bus with his gf but instead decided to stay and help Oz
Francis had every chance to send Oz to a rehabilitation center instead of listening to Rex
They reaped what they sowed
Sofia was manipulated and framed since the Pinguin was her driver.
Vic was also manipulated mentally into thinking this is what he away wanted
The Penguin has been manipulating people and evil since childhood if ypubhave not watched the show
@@ziglgler
@@SLTTPOH This is what I meant when I said “They reaped what they sowed”. They all jumped in and played Oz’s little manipulation game from the start including the people he played with since childhood. Besides, assuming I haven’t watched the show is outrageous and if you really think deep and realistically about everything that occurred throughout the show…these characters had all the chances they got to avoid dealing with a egotistical narcissist like Oz. Grounded and realistic, ain’t that what the show and Reevesverse was meant to be?
@@SLTTPOH btw I get it if it were to be veryyyyyy realistic then the show would’ve been a pile of garbage cus the showrunners want us to see Oz win and root him, but then made us change our perspective when ep. 7 dropped. But, what I was saying from 2 days ago were the obvious alternatives presented in the episodes and what could’ve been done to prevent Oz from achieving his “victory”(technically lost since he loses himself and everyone around him because he chose this criminal life and feed his ego & delusion)
The selina kyle letter maybe my favorite moment of the episode. Seeing Sophia finally have someone on her side and not just that but actually someone reaching out to her wanting to be apart of her life and want a relationship with her just hit me hard for some reason.
She's 100% getting broken out of Arkham too with Catwoman's help. Curious to see where they go with that angle as the Last Falcones
@@breach005 I hope, I absolutely love Sofia character in this show. Pengiun was perfect, but Sofia was on the same level for me.
You can’t trust Selina or sophia. Everyone in Gotham is an opportunist.
She’ll finally have a chance to have a member of her family that can care for her the way her brother did
i felt so sad when Sal died because he was like, the ONE sane person in Sofia's orbit who was both grieving his loved ones and involved in the lifestyle. she's been exclusively surrounded by freaks lol i wanted her to have some healing kinship with Mister Krabs :C
Really hope Batman puts hands on Oz now.
RIP Vic. Kid was too pure for the lifestyle and i had a feeling he would die, but not in such cruel fashion.
" justice... the answer it's justice "
Batman Villains never die , they get locked up, escape, repeat.
"I wanna see the Penguin" will ...hit...a little different now

Colin Farrells performance in this show will go down in history
His acting in the hospital scene in the final episode blew my mind, absolutely insane stuff
Agreed
Same with sophia she was a fantastic antagonist
@@sjhwbsAlmost every person killed it. Even the guys who only had a few lines.
IMO, the way i will always see it is that…..
Heath Ledger IS THE JOKER
Michael Keaton or Kevin Conroy IS BRUCE WAYNE/BATMAN
John Glover IS THE RIDDLER
Colin Farrell IS THE PENGUIN AKA OZWALD COBBLEPOT
I personally think the ending scene with Eve was always their Kink play way back and we are just seeing it now.
She looked repulsed and terrified deep down while they were dancing, at least to me
@@RemixedVoice I saw that too, and I think she will probably try to get him killed. After what she knows about those women he helped to get rid of.
@@WanZerReVieW they should have called him the cockroach, because the guy is so hard to get rid off
@ hell yea, they should have, his luck factor is on like 75%
Damn...I think you're right! Good eye!
What’s great about this series is that you can watch The Batman 2 without seeing it. Remember in The Batman’s ending. The monologue says “Some will seize the chance to grab everything they want” as it shows Oz, foreshadowing that he will take Falcone’s throne
Yup. They can just pick up with Oz took over the family and no one will miss a beat. Its very smooth
A brilliant observation. Unlike the MCU - no ill towards it - The Penguin or The Batman don't require you to have seen the other. You'll have greater appreciation for the projects; having seen both. But, movies and television series should invite the audience into their world - without leaving the viewer feeling as though they are missing crucial information, about that world.
Riddler is the best example. The Penguin gives you just enough context, to realise a person blew up Gotham's Dam Walls - without forcing you to have seen The Batman.
I hope future series akin to Penguin - as producer have announced more coming - tap into the notion of detailing certain worlds of Gotham. Without forcing the viewer to have homework.
Assuming Reeves is smart it will be written that way. All you really need to know going into B2 is that Oz consolidated power in the vacuum of the Maronis and Falcones, and Wayne picks up on this new political threat from Al CaPenguin, that only he really knows is a new poison in an already snake bitten Gotham. Wayne uses Batman to go where the cops can't or wont.
But, having watched this gives way more context and depth to it. That is how you make spinoffs.
True. That's a very clean way to do a spin off show. A nice snack but not mandatory
Seize
Straight up Super Villain who’s ability it is to trick anyone (even the viewer) into putting an ounce of trust in him. His mother told him he’s the devil and frankly he fits the description perfectly.
Yep, the devil thinks he’s the good guy
I was rooting for him in episode 1, but throughout the series it showed just how much of a monster he is
Sofía Falcone is such a well-written character overall. I guarantee you she will be used as an example of how to write a good (female) character, and rightly so.
so is the mom
Gigante. Her name is Sofia Gigante. Say her name.
She's a mass-murdering nutbag. She kills hundreds for her own insane ends. That's not hard to write.
The finale literally came out an hour ago this crazy work
Screeners babyyyy 😎👍🏻
@@FilmSpeakThe timing of this videos release couldn’t be better, I just finished watching it and then I got on RUclips just to kind of let the ending soak in. Your video was the first recommended! Wow wow wow what a series.
@ Awesome dude 🙏🏻 yeah it's just...WOW...rocked me.
Oz is not a good guy. In the end, this show wasn’t supposed to make you root for him. I was worried this show would end up making me root for him in The Batman part II. That’s simply not the case now. Absolutely brilliant show
I know like at first I felt bad for Oz because………. I mean just look at him, but once we found out more about him and his childhood the more you realize, “oh so you’ve always just been a piece of sh!t huh?”
@@Theunloved1738You would think that he had suffered some severe childhood trauma or some huge life altering event in the past, just to realize he's always been a snelveling little bastard from the get-go.
@@NYsBestArachnid-BasedProtector even devitos penguin had the benefit of the doubt
I disagree. It made you root for him... only to make you sick for it. We are manipulated by the master manipulator.
Saw someone say something really cool that basically the whole series is Oz trying to get the audience on his side and root for him only to screw them over at the end, just like he does to every single character throughout the series
I've never liked and hated a character so much as Colin Farrell's Penguin. It's so paradoxical and yet that's why I think the show works so well. No one is really a good guy. Closest thing we have to a good person is Victor and even he was getting shady as the show went on. With the Reeves Batman universe and James Gunn about to start his DCU it looks like things are really looking up for this franchise!
No one is all good but the Penguin had no genuine goodness. The other characters have degrees of goodness/badness.
Excellent Series! Just Outstanding! the Best thing they did about this show is that let the penguin be a VILLAIN! Not an anti-hero or a misunderstood victim...but a full blown. evil, villain!
Disney marvel turns every villain into a anti hero or misunderstood
Vic danced with the devil....
And died in the pale moonlight.
Tony soprano: Sacre Brue where is my Christopher?!
Why I go to work … can’t trust anybody
Victor didn’t have much of a choice. Once he got caught trying to steal those tires by Oz, it was over.
@isaiahlopez1162 not true. His chance to leave was when he was gonna get in the bus with his girl but instead chose to go save Oz.
The Penguin got better or stayed level each episode. It definitely surpassed Daredevil as the best comic book show of all time.
Yeah, I think with the finale, it cemented itself as the best. At the very least it's AS good as Daredevil.
As someone unfamiliar with Marvel tv shows (other than Loki and Ms Marvel) which are the good ones? I think there's more than one Daredevil and which order should I watch them in
@@rokudodamazatbh there’s a lot more bad ones than good ones but Punisher, Loki, DD, Moon knight and Luke cage are all decent if not good
@@thetdizzyyy I've seen a short of punisher and DD together so which show should I watch first to not get spoiled on the other? And is there one DD show?
Definitely better than Daredevil. I just don't find Matt Murdoch that compelling. I mean, he is alright. I did watch the show for two seasons( I dropped it because of how boring season 2 was). With Penguin, i watch each episode atleast two times to see if I missed anything. The pacing is amazing, all the characters are compelling and the screenplay is tight. For instance, this episode, mom had initially planned to kill Oz. If you remember episode 6, Eve was the one who sent Sofia to Oz's place( because she felt betrayed by Oz working for a man who was killing her friends, who are like family to her). And now, he had her dressed up like his mom and had her say things which he wanted to hear
This series had me hooked from the start. Being a huge fan of Reeves The Batman, I was already excited for this and it over delivered in everything. The best comic book series for sure! This universe Reeves created is a masterpiece.
I swear man what reeves doing is a masterpiece. I’m so fuckin hyped for Batman 2
The penguin honestly is just as good as “The Dark knight” no im not kidding. Both not only pay respects to their comic book counterparts, but both actually subverted our expectations at every turn and push the boundaries of storytelling.
Penguin also has an edge because it has the Batman and this show adds extra context which makes it better and more impactful. Im honestly at Awe on how amazing this show is.
A lot of people will disagree, but I agree wholeheartedly.
Both very good the penguin was a great season show awesome how they did it. I think heath ledger would have benefitted with how they format and do shows and movies now
i agree with you on that. Its probably as good as dark knight in terms of just performance but dark knight is neither the best comic book film nor adaptation for me atleast.
No pal, the penguin was awesome but nowhere near the level of The Dark Knight, it was a once in a generation cinematic masterpiece, that’s not just the best comic book movie but also one of the best movies of all time, so yeah nowhere close to The Dark Knight
@@legandrome5831 the dark knight wasn't that good bro..
I think, in my opinion, this is the scariest version of the penguin. He's just so ... Cold.
the person who played his mother is also a great actress !!
In the end, it shows that Oz may have had some humanizing moments throughout the show. But ultimately, he was and always will be the villain of the story and one of Batman's greatest enemies
i kinda wish he kept him and deemed him later on or used him later just to show he’s a piece of shit but in the least obvious way; making us think he’s gonna be safe
@@RamensFiasco thats what they did now pal
"But, listen kid" .........LET THE MEMES BEGIN!!!!
Cue Gil Scott-Heron's Me and the Devil
At first, the bat signal showing up at the end made me roll my eyes (keep reading, please. Lol). Not cause it’s not cool, but because we’re in a time where things like that or things that feel familiar popping up in a show/movie that’s great on its own can dilute a show being amazing on its own even if it’s something as small as that sometimes. And it kinda cheapens it when they feel tacked on
Then I thought about it. The signal popping up is perfect, because it’s earned. At this point, Penguin is finally, well, THE Penguin. Meaning he’s a threat, and is actively on Batman’s radar. Simple, yes. But very seldom are these kinds of Easter eggs and cameo style teases used in a way that perfectly fits a narrative like this did.
Honestly i thought it was perfect and was meant so that we would get really hyped for the next batman movie which worked for me, and didnt feel forced in anyway, especially when batman was not mentioned once in the show.
I understand but it's not that deep.
@@Young_Dab… It’s an HBO show. It’s definitely that deep, g. Lol. And I’m not even saying that much. Just that he’s a threat now, so it makes sense. 😂😂
it kinda feels like a baton pass the same way the shot of Oz at the end of The Batman was a baton pass.
When you don't need Batman in Batman based universe, ya know it's a hit.
I never rooted for Oz directly. I was more so interested in seeing HOW he reached the top so that I have more reasons to enjoy when it all comes crashing down and Batman makes it happen!
i’ve seen nobody talks abt the fact after everything he did he fails to live up to the promise he made to his mom of putting her out of her misery if she’s a vegetable. goes to show how oz truly does everything for himself and convinces himself he’s right to do so.
That single tear she gives at the end messed me up. Oz keeps the idea she kept his mother’s promise, thinking he made her proud, while she suffers a fate worse than death, it’s so tragic.
@@Nori-zw1ww I think he's punishing her, and has rationalized that into a lie that he's doing it all for her, and believing his lie
he knows. as someone wrote, sofia wanted to be free, he locked her up, mom wanted to die and not be a vegetable he let her live, vic wanted to live, he killed him@@Nori-zw1ww
Victor made one mistake, and that was trusting the devil.
Fantastic series!
Its gonna be very satisfying seeing Batman crumble Oz's empire. Hopefully Sofia plays a part in this too (i think its likely)
The Penguin is so deliciously evil in this show. It's like you can see how hard Oz has to work to look at himself in the mirror. He's so good at convincing himself he isn't a monster that he almost had me fooled at points. But then the finale happened... Vic... 😭
Not many people talk about the last scene and setup for Batman II. I feel the hype of seeing a hero come to save the day has been declining, specially with villains like Killmonger and dumb heroes with dumb motivations like a lot of the new age Marvel heroes. This time, you see the signal and you are relieved, excited, but most important you feel hope. For those who watched the show, seeing The Batman in the next movie will feel different, it will feel personal, like no other hero on the screen before. Because The Penguin did what few villains have ever done and is actually hurt us. We want justice for Vic, we want the Batman to come, and that is the genius of Matt Reeves.
They stuck the landing. I’m extremely happy and grateful that they did! Amazing show!
All Vic had to do was get on the damn bus!
All we had to do was follow the damn train CJ
Absolute masterclass in every concievable way.
The writing on occasion sucks nuts. Like crime bosses meeting in person all the time. Not realistic.
Not only is this the best comic book television show of all time, I think it has finally beat band of brothers for being the best mini series of all time. S tier writing, S tier acting, S tier production, S tier pacing. The quad S has not been done many times and I’m glad this show exceeded expectations.
Ya I don’t think I’ve ever been “into” a show so much and anticipating each new episode. And I’m 40 so I’ve seen a fair bit of shows, I’m not an avid TV watcher, but still
Just an incredible show. Plus how it seamlessly tied directly into the same universe as the movie, with a nearly identical feel, just more nuanced
I still think Generation Kill is their best miniseries
@erikschwartz1214 A viewer with taste. I agree, Generation Kill is still the best.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but my god, this show is better than daredevil. This is single handedly THE best Dc tv show ever.

The finale of this show reminded me of Better Call Saul-the kind of gut-wrenching moment when a character is painstakingly developed only to be brutally killed, leaving you in tears. It’s a classic trope where villains have that "kick the dog" moment, designed to make us root against them. But in this last episode, Oz didn’t just kick the dog; he doused it in gasoline, set it on fire, desecrated the charred remains, and then practically devoured them.
Im stuck on how at the end Francis is crying through her vegetative state, looking at the city finally, and Oz says 'I know, its all you wanted''
We know she despised the idea of becoming dependent and losing her dignity. He promised her he'd spare her that, and even his own mother he betrays.
She let him live and is now trapped in her own body, after being in her own personal hell for fourty years.
There is not one single person, not one, in the whole show that Oz hasnt used or betrayed, usually both.
I looked away for a moment where Oz killed Victor and when I looked back I thought he was giving him like a noogie and I was like 'aw they're so close- OH MY GOD HE'S DEAD."
vic’s death devastated me but what else could u expect from someone like Oz? He will do anything and i mean anything to have power. Vic deserves so much better than to die like this
I know he said his mom was “the good part of him” but honestly that role goes to Vic. He truly was his ONLY saving grace

Gotham : we COOKED!!
I was not a huge fan of The Batman movie, but this series is so good, it’s making me want to go back and watch the movie again. Top tier TV. I love how grounded this show was, you at times forgot this was a Batman spin off, not just a mob ties show.
I'm opposite. I'm a fan of The Batman but didn't enjoy Penguin very much.
The last two Oz scenes: murder of Vic, and penthouse one were really great though
@ I’m going to give The Batman another spin this weekend. I think the show may make me like the movie more. Hopefully we both agree they are going in the right direction with Batman stuff. Def excited for The Batman II
I really liked how it explored parts of Gotham rarely seen.
I didn't think he'd go so far as to kill Vic but Jesus Christ.......
Oz is a POS and I love that we finally get a Villain that isn't complex or nuanced
Just the straight up Devil in a Suit, Top Hat, and a Limp.
he is complex but he is definitely not good at all
Quite literally put him down like “old yeller” or “of mice and men”
I do think he has complexity and nuance, he's just an awful person despite that.
Yeah, your confused. He is complex and nuanced. Just not his moral quality. He remains a villain through and through. But those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
3:25 I really appreciate your analysis of the Riddler, since a lot of people criticize his plan for contradicting his supposed motives, but that was exactly the point, hecwas so cynical and miserable that he thought society was beyond saving and just wanted to burn the world down. As his goon said, he was vengeance, just like Batman, and that's what made Batman realize he needed to change and be better if he wanted to maje a difference.
I've been trying to get my dad to watch The Batman and his biggest hurdle is Robert Pattinson. I explained that Pattinson works because it's not a superhero movie, but a crime drama. The Penguin is even more in the crime drama genre. All of these characters are so well-conceived that I could tell you what they probably want for Christmas.
It's so satisfying how well Matt Reeves' Batman universe is going. As a big Batman fan and also a big fan of film entirely, he really knows how to hit those little spots that make my toes curl. He strikes such an amazing balance of true Batman loyalty and prestige filmmaking.
We were all in an abusive relationship with Oz through the eyes of Vic 😢. The signs was all there man but we wanted to believe in him 😂
there was no doubt about it that Vic and Ma weren't getting out of Season 1 alive. It was always going to be the thing the trampolined him into pure evil seeking more than revenge. But I NEVER would have expected it would happen by his own willing hands. This is the best season of any series in at least ten years.
Every aspect, every crewmember of this show is on top of their game.
Tldr: i want mommy, i want milk, i want to be held, i want to be comforted, and if you do not give me all of these thing immediately i will ruin your life
😂
What a year for comic book television for us to get Penguin AND X-Men 97(which is my pick for the best comic book show of all time)
XMEN97 was phenomenal as well, but I think we're talking specifically live action.
Except the DCU is gonna reward the show runner while the MCU got the show runner fired.

Very rarely do i get shocked in watching anything. When he iced Vic, i couldn't believe it... I mean, i know OZ is a dirtbag, but i figured he had a line that even he wouldn't cross. A wholesome father and son moment, to that. It speaks to how amazing this show is. Hope for a seaaon two
His mother said she had enough love to give, she was talking about for all 3 sons, he didn’t have to kill his brothers to be loved
It is a masterpiece, James. Complete. Comprehensive
The scene in the hospital had me close to tears and then barely 5 minutes later, the scene of Vic and Oz by the waterside drinking whiskey...
Having a character so manipulative he even fools the audience - that's wonderful writing

He gets so lucky in the show. Like a lot. But it doesn't feel cheap. Great writing.
Nah, those parts are too unrealistic. Knocked the show below Daredevil for me.
A show that understands the weight of keeping Oz a disgusting human being to his core. I love how the entire heartbreak is sold through the tragedy of Victor. The last episode actually fooled me for half a second when Vic was still sort of around. This show was a masterpiece. The Batman Part 2 is going to be incredible, can’t wait to see Batman make his way to Oz. Great video as always, your work is always great man!
I was taken aback by how depraved this depiction of the penguin was: so fkn good
I was saying to my partner that Vic was too pure for this lifestyle with Oz and that his ending was gonna be brutal. I still didn’t see THAT coming, until he stuttered when calling Oz “family”…then I knew 😢
Milioti is incredible in this. Terrifying and broken in the best way possible.
Oz was momma's boy in the Gotham show. He's momma's boy here.
The defining trait of Oz
It was way healthier in gotham tho
@@josecopas and that's saying something
He's like that in the comics before she dies it's as accurate as batman being a orphan
Absolutely smashed it with analysis, that closing line was special.
This was the video I’ve been looking for, to cement my thoughts on. Great work
its my favorite TV show in a long time
Can't wait for Sofia to find a Lazarus pitt and bring Vic back! S2 let's go!!
I thought Vic would eventually be betrayed and return to the light. Possibly becoming Robin, being able to help Batman defeat the Penguin. But bruh, Vic’s death …. I was tricked into thinking it would never come.
I like how he goes "wagh wagh wagh!" Just like a penguin!
Collin Ferrell. Matt Reeves.. your name will be in the rafters.
This shit is goat level. I need Batman 2 to be R rated. This version of Gotham is peak.
I didn't even really think about how Vic being ultimately successful where Oz failed could be part of why he was killed off, that's actually a pretty good reason for someone like Oz who clearly has self esteem issues. You got my sub for this one mate.
The Penguin is proof 2 things. Hollywood can still produce high quality entertainment, and it proves there's no such thing as a modern audience. Every liberty in the world has been taken on re-interpretting Oz from the source material....but you won't find a single DC Comic fan on earth who's complaining. Because the writing is amazing. Writing is the most important part of a show. If the writing is good, everything else can be bad and it'll still find an audience. When the writing is good, and everything else is good as well, you create the best season of television in over a decade.
When oz starting saying vic has been with him during it all, I already knew what was going to happen. Sheesh man, I hope he at least survived until the next season, but I also knew his role was filled.
One of my brothers didn't watch the Batman until after he watched The Penguin ep 5!
That's awesome! Kinda wild that seems to be a thing, but hey, it's a testament to the quality of The Penguin!
Now you gotta give your brother Penguin treatment
I’ll admit I hadn’t seen The Batman either....but I watched it literally directly after seeing that first pilot episode of The Penguin.
The commercials on HBO for the show got me curious, then once I watched the pilot, I was totally engrossed and couldn’t wait to see Batman
I like this trend of not leaving it up to the audience to decide if the protagonist is good or bad... cause the amount of people who think the likes Tony Soprano and Walter White were some kind of heroes or respectable people is wild. The Penguin tells you this is a bad guy from the beginning and then makes sure everyone gets the point by offing Victor. Brilliant!!
Excellent review, spot on! The greatest comic book show of all time. Totally next level to which others will need to aim. The bar has been risen.
This video is masterful. Makes me want to rewatch it with the points put across with depth. This series is simply special and I’m glad to be able to digest all the talent that came together to create a masterpiece.
Why did IGN gave this a 5/10 rating
Can't spell "ignorant" without IGN, bro
Wait really, goddammit ign
@@t_sh162🤣🤣
Can everybody plz stop talking about ign they gave she hulk an 8 why does anyone care about their opinion

Man, you wasted no time in writing up the best review of the show on RUclips as soon as it dropped! Great job!
As a son of a single mother (my dad passed away when I was a kid), I won’t lie-I teared up in every scene where Oz comforted his mom, promising to make her life better. but damn that's fuck up and gross when I realized he thinks about her more than just a mom and sees her like a lover. The last scene at the end is just sick.
I don't think he thinks of her like that , it's more like it's just a weird obsession with his mom but it didn't seem sexual . Just excessive mummy issues. And wants his mom to love him. He a psychopath I don't think he ever really cared about other people in any real way. His obsession with his mom isn't even love for her it's live for himself and he needed her to love him or be proud of him. I do understand that you need to want your parents to say they're proud of you.
@@juliusfishman7222 Eve Karlo is a prostitute who dresses like his mom. Not sure if their relationship is just Oz seeking the resemblance and his mom’s praising from her, or if he went so far as to sleep with her while she wore his mom’s dress. That would be gross.

The kid who played the young Oswald did a really good job too. Really sympathetic.
The only hope I have for Vic getting Justice is the fact that Oz’s fingerprints are on his throat. I need Bruce to get him Justice (or let Sofia escape and let her finish him off)
What I love about the Show is that It makes Batman such a big deal now.He was never mentioned in the entire show (except the first scene) yet as you see Gotham and its broken system you realise how important Batman truly is.Also the the fact that Batman at this point is pretty much irrelevant. Not a single gangstar is afraid of him. This shows how tough this job is.
I love Mr Freeze and Clayface but I neeeed The Batman Part II to have Oz as the main villain I NEED to see this guy put in his place 😭
I think a reimagining of Arkham Origins would be cool. Christmas Day, Penguin knows the bat is going to make his move so hires a few of his rogue’s gallery to take him out by midnight. I’d watch the hell of that
@@realmaximouse that’d be awesome
@@realmaximouse literally was hoping for a similar movie for a few years atp and ur right it would fit here perfectly! good continuation of the story plus it’d let the movie introduce future big guys like bane or joker f.ex.
I beg to differ with that title bro has never seen peak “The Man Without Fear” 👹
This is so well done. There is so much emotion in the writing here. Perfectly portrayed. This Gotham crime drama 🎭 has me so pulled in. I loved Riddler and I'd love a series featuring him running his gang. Right now though #ThePenguin is my guy. He wants everything and nothing is enough. He's so selfish. Just a fascinating villain. You can't really take anything from him. He loves the game. He'll just claw back and love doing it. Fun Stuff
if you want to see the Riddler from this universe in action, I'd highly recommend reading "The Riddler: Year One" series that was written by Paul Dano himself (the actor who plays Riddler in The Batman). its some solid work.
@@meaningbread15 It's on my list. I'm for anything these people do lol. I've always been a fan of Batman and his villains are my favorite but I think I understand what geeking out means now lol Matt Reeves has me geeking out.
This is such a fantastically written video, you are a true pro!
They finally made a villain we can all hate from batman rogue gallery. I was so tired of them always using joker
I was already uneasy at the start of the scene, feeling something was off, but when Vic called him family, and Oz looked towards the river and said “fuck” I knew it was over.
The series truly felt like a great comic, with such a well written twist at the end. The comic penguin is just absurdely evil, and the show captured this comic-esque feel quite well.
yes perfection
script
casting
and production
The part where I might slightly disagree is the justification of Sofia and Vic, I mean they're both definitely sympathetic and tragic, and you want them to make it out because, unlike Oz, they have a reason for making the choices they make. They both had points of fateful choices. They both had the chance to leave, they both chose not to. At that point their fates were sealed.
I don't think justifying Sofia is right. She didn't just kill her evil family. She blew up a car in an already impoverished area of the city, and didn't think twice of it. She tortured a sick old lady for revenge. Sofia is a monster, but a different monster. She is the monster that became a monster because of her environment and her reactions to it. She is the "trauma" monster. In contrast to Oz, who was always a monster.
With Vic, his life ended before he could've become a monster down the line. He'd already done some messed up stuff through the season and ultimately killed someone, as an execution. And this was in a short time.
What I love is that the show never worked in black and white but different shades of gray.
Knew Vic wasn’t going to survive, but didn’t see it happening like that. Wild.
It was a surprising sad ending for Vic but he had it coming. Who knew it was his mentor 😮
“m..m..Ma….” Fucking chilling shit man 😅
