No, it's usually not that bad if we have to alter a plan.... I view the plan as a starting point, but then it's more important to adapt when you are out riding. It would have been very dangerous to try to push on and cross the Kowmung River. Well, if you live in Colorado, you live in lovely country too.
Great video Brent. Color correction was nice and vibrant and really made the video pop. Looks like a great ride despite all the dead ends and turn arounds. At least there's a great excuse to go again :-)

Was lucky enough to do a similar loop years ago. One of the guys in our group found a rock in a creek crossing that found its way around the bash plate on the DR650 and punched a hole in the casing. Bit of recovery mission heading back towards Jenolan to get phone signal to get a Ute to come grab him. We continued on to camp at Dingo Dell then Wombeyan caves and round back through Lithgow. Something about trips not going to plan that make them special 👌🏽
Thats a great ride. did the southern half of it last weekend. Its much drier and dustier) at the moment. Also a few sections that are rocky and hard packed, that ate one rider in our groups tyre.
Thanks David, yeah we are pretty lucky... we have so much diverse beauty all around us.... and I haven't even scratched the surface. I'm doing my first weekend ride up North next week, so I'm looking forward to that Barrington Tops, Nundle, etc.
@@charabanc1418 Oh... got it. Yeah, UK has some lovely things going for it... but Adventure Riding is not it's greatest strength. There are some amazing places to ride in Northern Hemisphere (I'm watching a series of videos on Iceland at the moment which looks amazing), and of course USA has incredible riding (the BDR movement is incredible). But when it comes to sheer wilderness and adventure... we have that in spades.
I think if you keep this up your gonna be a star on YT , great stuff mate .. very envious of your bike, filming set up and the places you have to ride over there , and your effort to show us real good thanks !!!!
Wow - that was a cracking video Brent! Your narration is great, and the videography is top notch! I definitely want to get out that part of NSW on the trails after seeing that - I love that you include the place names and don't "keep the trails to yourself". I was fairly wincing too at poor John's lovely 890 taking those spills - hope there was no major damage / marks left

What a beauty of adventure! It looks like the landscape here with the eucalyptus trees - only that such a cluster of trees is called here a forest :) The popular navigation app among local hikers and "off-roaders" has a feature that thickens popular trails in the red line on the map. The thicker the line, the more people pass through it. I purchased it just to avoid gates and closed passes (and to avoid too crowded routes). Great video, Brent! Glad I saved it for later viewing. -And keep looking ahead instead of up :)
Thanks... yes, the advice to look forward and not down or up is duly noted. How's your 701 going? Must be a more comfortable time of the year for you to ride. I saw another Israeli on a 701 recently on one of the facebook forums. Have you guys met?
@@brentbat yes, the 701 and 690 owner groups on WhatsApp and Facebook meet for trips. Most are no longer young but still looking for the extreme (120 Kph~ on straight off-road trails and steep singles) so there are regularly 2-3 with a broken leg :). I ride with friends with big adventures so it's more... calmer and nature traveled oriented. we had two rainy weeks and the conditions are much better.
Awesome video as always Brent. Could you please share the GPS coordinates of the locked gate/ third blockage at 7:20. We have a caves to caves day ride coming up with a similar detour to avoid the road closures at Jenolan Caves. That gate might be on the same route I’ve mapped out. Hope to meet you out on the trails some day soon. Cheers
Yeah, I agree with you Doug... I guess that is why they call it Adventure riding. I actually like that aspect... unplanned obstacles forcing you to think on the fly and adapt. I'd rather have that then everything going according to plan :-)

Hey Roger, I do and I will. I spend half my time in the USA (Austin, TX). I did the Idaho BDR this year and I want to do another BDR next year as well as ride in some of the places I haven't been to. Only problem is that my 701 is in Sydney, and in Austin I have a GS.... Maybe I need to sell the GS and have two 701s :-)
I rode 6 foot track from Blackheath to black range campground a year or so ago. Hardest uphill ride of my life. I managed to pedal through all the river crossing without putting my feet down. I did however have to carry my bike through the cox river because you can't take your bike on the bridge. I'll be going back on my 300 rally to smash it through there soon.
Great video. You’d be glad you didn’t pick up the six foot track right at the start. We came that way from blackheath and there are plenty of parts that were unrideable on bikepacking bikes (bicycles) - steep steps etc - a couple of months back. Coxs river onwards is 👌
@@brentbat Megalong rd to aspinall rd - then turned off Aspinall road at -33.73446441101692, 150.22639335747465 where the track essentially starts. The streetview points around that intersection should give you a good idea of how narrow the track is. From there it traverses some private land and there are some stiles to get over. Randomly realised I met you and Anuj at tank stream labs in the early days - small world.

Awesome Brent. Your videos remind me how much I left behind when I returned to NZed. As a film maker myself I get double the joy. Not only an exciting well executed yarn but to watch another mans take on the subject. 'Oh man', that deep creek I was hoping like hell there would be no disaster. They certainly raise the tension at times. More progress with the Skydio. Was quoted $5,555 for the Cinama Kit today. That includes Skydio Autonomy Enterprise which I assume is a subscription to operate it. Hopefully I can get clarity on that point. The same kit in usa is nzd$2980. Some thing sucks. Sat morning in ten minutes. I'll hit the hay thinking about tomorrows ride. Cheers
Hey Kiwi Adventurer, I think you are looking at the wrong kit. I've just upgraded my Skydio 2 to the Skydio2+ and I bought the Sports Kit (USD 1549). I already had ND filters, but the Sports kit is exactly what I use. I bought the Cinema kit originally, but I don't use the remote controller, and I did use the Pelican case when I had my GS (I made a nice quick release mount for it). But now I'm riding the lighter Husky 701, I think the Pelican case is too big, so I just mount the smaller case on the rear rack or put it in my backpack and it works a treat.
@@brentbat Unless I can get a contact in the states they won't export to NZ and Sphere Drones will but only sell the Cinama kit. It is what it is and work in progress. Where there's a will there's a way. Watch this space Brent, meantime keep doing what you do. Cheers
@@kiwiadventurer But it sounds like they are selling more than the Cinema Kit... Skydio Autonomy Enterprise is on the commercial side, not the consumer side, and if they are trying to sell you Skydio Care, that will only work in the US.... I'd try to negotiate with them if possible, or at least make sure it is the consumer version of the drone and not the enterprise. Anyway... I know your options are limited... so good luck. I know a few folks in Australia got them sent out via freight forwarders.
The places you ride looks so damn amazing 👏🏻 when I grew up, we always heard storys about Australia and all the little venomous creatures you got. How big of a problem is that when you are out camping like this? It is in huge contrast to Norway, where we don't have any creatures that are venomous 🙈 Thank you for all the effort you put in this videos. They are so well made and enjoyable to watch. Bizarrely most of our wildlife just wants to stay away from us... Spiders are probably the only real issue, snakes, well at night use a torch so you don't step on one of its a warm night.. 😉
I actually wrote t the CEO of GaiGPS with exactly this suggestion... Add Waze like social functionality so that people could update track status in real-time.
Hey Geoffrey, the unit is a Garmin Zumo XT. It comes with a set of Topographic maps for Australia and NZ. I do a lot of my route planning on GaiaGPS and then send the tracks to the GPS using Basecamp.
Superb video. Exactly what I want to do on my T7. Unfortunately, here in SA, there is nothing like the stuff you guys ride east of the border (farmland, gates, no trees, and flat desert everywhere). Bummer! 😢. Lucky buggers! Cheers.

Hey James, No, we didn't swap bikes that ride, but we might do it next time, I wouldn't mind comparing the 890... but I'm loving the 701 more and more every ride.
@@brentbat Yes, it looks like you have it set up perfect. I had a 690 and sold it for a 350 because I wanted to ride more technical stuff which I do but I get into too much trouble. I find my 890 rides almost a nimble as my 690 so I think I have found the sweet spot for big RTW travel now. It took me lowering the 890 to get it where I feel comfortable on most all terrains because I'm 5'7". I just have to watch how much gear I pack. What photo/video gear did you take on this trip? Did you pack a mirrorless or just the Gopro, 360 and the s Skydio? I really like the way you set a go-pro up on the two bikes so you had follow and look back footage. When you were filming each other doing the water crossings, were you just using the GoPro's or a Mirrorless? And yes, as other have commented the colour grading was spectacular on this one. Cheers.
@@jamesprecious1035 Hey James, I didn't take the mirrorless camera, Right now I'm travelling with My GoPro 10 (on my. helmet), My GoPro 9 which I use as my second action cam) , My Skydio2 drone and now my iPhone 13Pro (in Cinematic mode). That way I'm staying super light and I'm happy with that mix of cameras. Yes, the rear facing GoPro was Jon's camera and I liked that perspective too. Really mixed things up in terms of angles. Thanks regarding colour grading. I think it makes all the difference on the final video.
@@brentbat OK, so when you were shooting each other doing the river crossings were you just using the go-pros or your iPhone. I'm just to about to buy a mirrorless and I'm considering the Sony S7iv because I think I really want to carry a camera for my travels. I just love the opportunity to shoot stills having grown up with a camera always at my side. Having said that I think your set may be the way to go, the last thing I need is for half my packed bike to be photo/video gear. The iPhone 13pro is a beast by the looks of it.
@@jamesprecious1035 We just used GoPros for the river crossings. While I love my XT4, on most of my adventure bike rides I'm really focusing on space/weight and being very selective in what I take. If I'm on a supported trip.. .then it is in my luggage for sure.
Yes, I love the Lynx fairing. It gives me great wind protection, I have two different screens (I have a bigger touring screen), and both of them retract for offroad. The Garmin unit is the Zumo XT which I really love.
Yes, I'm loving the 701, especially in the Australian terrain. It's the perfect bike as the terrain is generally more technical and while the GS can go to a lot of the places, it's just way less stressful and more fun on the 701.

Hi Max, I actually owned 2 1250GS, One in Austin Texas (which I still have), but I sold the one in Australia and bought the Husky 701 instead. The riding that I do in Australia is just way more rugged than the GS was designed for... It's Perfect for the 701. But in Texas, that is perfect for the GS.
Hey Brent, I have a KTM 640 Adventure with a 7.5 gallon/28 liter fuel tank. Would that be enough to complete this track without refueling? Love the flexibility in your approach to dealing with challenges along the way.
Have you done something with your bike to protect it from the deep water? I can't see anything, but you must in some occasions have had your air filter under the water level.
Also Brent, i'm curious, I also run a GoPro 10 (looks loke you do too), What type of helmet mount have you used. Ive had a Chin Mount and a Dango mount... just looking to see what works for others. David
Hey David I use the Proshot chin mount. www.proshotcam.com/ I personally think the chin mount is the best mount for a number of reasons. 1) I like the perspective (not too high, not too low) 2) I like having clean shots (no helmet poking out from the side) 3) I can see the blinking red light, so I KNOW when it is recording 4) I can actually see the top of my screen, so I can check my framing 5) It is easy to operate, I can button on and off very fast with the button in front of my face. I have added a small gopro extension bar to raise the camera up a bit... This means the camera does block a little bit of my lower vision (motorcycle dashboard etc.) but not my vision of the road/track. I'm happy with this tradeoff because being able to check composition means my shots are framed better (I can tell this just from viewing the top 1/3 of the screen).
@@brentbat thanks for the information, the new Dango mount I tried yesterday hasn’t worked out as I don’t feel its secure enough and it conflicts with my neck brace so I’ll give number three mount a go with the Proshot….. thanks. I’ve learnt to look in my mirror to see if the camera is still on as my problem was making sure they were turned off !!
@@2wheelsinmotion Yeah, the Proshot has been rock solid.. I've only ever had it fall off once, and that is when I went over a big jump and didn't see an uphill landing... so I landed REALLY hard and bottomed my shocks out. Thats the only time it's let go on me and I've used it heaps. If you get the height right, you won't have to look at your mirrors as you will be able to see the rear tally light flashing red.

Hi John, My GPS has a full set of topographic maps, but I use GaiaGPS to do my planning on the computer and I export my tracks to the GPS. By following tracks instead of routes, the base map detail doesn't have to be all that great because you are literally just following the line that is drawn on the GPS unit.

Hi LOR, I'm generally pretty happy with the Husky on long trips with the exception of the seat. That is the last part of my Adv bike build. I'm waiting for Seat Concepts to come up with the XL comfort model for the MY21, then I'm buying it. But other than that, the bike feels great from a riding position perspective, the windscreen does a great job keeping the wind off my body, I have cruise control and heated grips... good GPS with music... and the lighting system on the Lynx is great. So I would ride that bike all day on long trips without a problem.

I rode 6 foot track from Blackheath to black range campground a year or so ago. Hardest uphill ride of my life. I managed to pedal through all the river crossing without putting my feet down. I did however have to carry my bike through the cox river because you can't take your bike on the bridge. I'll be going back on my 300 rally to smash it through there soon.
Great video. You’d be glad you didn’t pick up the six foot track right at the start. We came that way from blackheath and there are plenty of parts that were unrideable on bikepacking bikes (bicycles) - steep steps etc - a couple of months back. Coxs river onwards is 👌

@@brentbat Megalong rd to aspinall rd - then turned off Aspinall road at -33.73446441101692, 150.22639335747465 where the track essentially starts. The streetview points around that intersection should give you a good idea of how narrow the track is. From there it traverses some private land and there are some stiles to get over. Randomly realised I met you and Anuj at tank stream labs in the early days - small world.

Awesome Brent. Your videos remind me how much I left behind when I returned to NZed. As a film maker myself I get double the joy. Not only an exciting well executed yarn but to watch another mans take on the subject. 'Oh man', that deep creek I was hoping like hell there would be no disaster. They certainly raise the tension at times. More progress with the Skydio. Was quoted $5,555 for the Cinama Kit today. That includes Skydio Autonomy Enterprise which I assume is a subscription to operate it. Hopefully I can get clarity on that point. The same kit in usa is nzd$2980. Some thing sucks. Sat morning in ten minutes. I'll hit the hay thinking about tomorrows ride. Cheers
Hey Kiwi Adventurer, I think you are looking at the wrong kit. I've just upgraded my Skydio 2 to the Skydio2+ and I bought the Sports Kit (USD 1549). I already had ND filters, but the Sports kit is exactly what I use. I bought the Cinema kit originally, but I don't use the remote controller, and I did use the Pelican case when I had my GS (I made a nice quick release mount for it). But now I'm riding the lighter Husky 701, I think the Pelican case is too big, so I just mount the smaller case on the rear rack or put it in my backpack and it works a treat.
@@brentbat Unless I can get a contact in the states they won't export to NZ and Sphere Drones will but only sell the Cinama kit. It is what it is and work in progress. Where there's a will there's a way. Watch this space Brent, meantime keep doing what you do. Cheers
@@kiwiadventurer But it sounds like they are selling more than the Cinema Kit... Skydio Autonomy Enterprise is on the commercial side, not the consumer side, and if they are trying to sell you Skydio Care, that will only work in the US.... I'd try to negotiate with them if possible, or at least make sure it is the consumer version of the drone and not the enterprise. Anyway... I know your options are limited... so good luck. I know a few folks in Australia got them sent out via freight forwarders.

How big of a problem is that when you are out camping like this? Bizarrely most of our wildlife just wants to stay away from us... Spiders are probably the only real issue, snakes, well at night use a torch so you don't step on one of its a warm night.. 😉

I actually wrote t the CEO of GaiGPS with exactly this suggestion... Add Waze like social functionality so that people could update track status in real-time.

Hey Geoffrey, the unit is a Garmin Zumo XT. It comes with a set of Topographic maps for Australia and NZ. I do a lot of my route planning on GaiaGPS and then send the tracks to the GPS using Basecamp.

Hey James, No, we didn't swap bikes that ride, but we might do it next time, I wouldn't mind comparing the 890... but I'm loving the 701 more and more every ride.
@@brentbat Yes, it looks like you have it set up perfect. I had a 690 and sold it for a 350 because I wanted to ride more technical stuff which I do but I get into too much trouble. I find my 890 rides almost a nimble as my 690 so I think I have found the sweet spot for big RTW travel now. It took me lowering the 890 to get it where I feel comfortable on most all terrains because I'm 5'7". I just have to watch how much gear I pack. What photo/video gear did you take on this trip? Did you pack a mirrorless or just the Gopro, 360 and the s Skydio? I really like the way you set a go-pro up on the two bikes so you had follow and look back footage. When you were filming each other doing the water crossings, were you just using the GoPro's or a Mirrorless? And yes, as other have commented the colour grading was spectacular on this one. Cheers.
@@jamesprecious1035 Hey James, I didn't take the mirrorless camera, Right now I'm travelling with My GoPro 10 (on my. helmet), My GoPro 9 which I use as my second action cam) , My Skydio2 drone and now my iPhone 13Pro (in Cinematic mode). That way I'm staying super light and I'm happy with that mix of cameras. Yes, the rear facing GoPro was Jon's camera and I liked that perspective too. Really mixed things up in terms of angles. Thanks regarding colour grading. I think it makes all the difference on the final video.
@@brentbat OK, so when you were shooting each other doing the river crossings were you just using the go-pros or your iPhone. I'm just to about to buy a mirrorless and I'm considering the Sony S7iv because I think I really want to carry a camera for my travels. I just love the opportunity to shoot stills having grown up with a camera always at my side. Having said that I think your set may be the way to go, the last thing I need is for half my packed bike to be photo/video gear. The iPhone 13pro is a beast by the looks of it.
@@jamesprecious1035 We just used GoPros for the river crossings. While I love my XT4, on most of my adventure bike rides I'm really focusing on space/weight and being very selective in what I take. If I'm on a supported trip.. .then it is in my luggage for sure.

Yes, I love the Lynx fairing. It gives me great wind protection, I have two different screens (I have a bigger touring screen), and both of them retract for offroad. The Garmin unit is the Zumo XT which I really love.

Yes, I'm loving the 701, especially in the Australian terrain. It's the perfect bike as the terrain is generally more technical and while the GS can go to a lot of the places, it's just way less stressful and more fun on the 701.

Hi Max, I actually owned 2 1250GS, One in Austin Texas (which I still have), but I sold the one in Australia and bought the Husky 701 instead. The riding that I do in Australia is just way more rugged than the GS was designed for... It's Perfect for the 701. But in Texas, that is perfect for the GS.

Hey Brent, I have a KTM 640 Adventure with a 7.5 gallon/28 liter fuel tank. Would that be enough to complete this track without refueling? Love the flexibility in your approach to dealing with challenges along the way.
28L!!!! Absolutely. That is a big tank. You will have plenty of fuel to spare with a tank that big.
Have you done something with your bike to protect it from the deep water?
I can't see anything, but you must in some occasions have had your air filter under the water level.

I personally think the chin mount is the best mount for a number of reasons.
1) I like the perspective (not too high, not too low)
2) I like having clean shots (no helmet poking out from the side)
3) I can see the blinking red light, so I KNOW when it is recording
4) I can actually see the top of my screen, so I can check my framing
5) It is easy to operate, I can button on and off very fast with the button in front of my face.
I have added a small gopro extension bar to raise the camera up a bit... This means the camera does block a little bit of my lower vision (motorcycle dashboard etc.) but not my vision of the road/track. I'm happy with this tradeoff because being able to check composition means my shots are framed better (I can tell this just from viewing the top 1/3 of the screen).
@@brentbat thanks for the information, the new Dango mount I tried yesterday hasn’t worked out as I don’t feel its secure enough and it conflicts with my neck brace so I’ll give number three mount a go with the Proshot….. thanks. I’ve learnt to look in my mirror to see if the camera is still on as my problem was making sure they were turned off !!
@@2wheelsinmotion Yeah, the Proshot has been rock solid.. I've only ever had it fall off once, and that is when I went over a big jump and didn't see an uphill landing... so I landed REALLY hard and bottomed my shocks out. Thats the only time it's let go on me and I've used it heaps. If you get the height right, you won't have to look at your mirrors as you will be able to see the rear tally light flashing red.

So the maps of all the roads you used, were they standard on the GPS, or did you have to download them yourself ?
Hi John, My GPS has a full set of topographic maps, but I use GaiaGPS to do my planning on the computer and I export my tracks to the GPS. By following tracks instead of routes, the base map detail doesn't have to be all that great because you are literally just following the line that is drawn on the GPS unit.

Hi LOR, I'm generally pretty happy with the Husky on long trips with the exception of the seat. That is the last part of my Adv bike build. I'm waiting for Seat Concepts to come up with the XL comfort model for the MY21, then I'm buying it. But other than that, the bike feels great from a riding position perspective, the windscreen does a great job keeping the wind off my body, I have cruise control and heated grips... good GPS with music... and the lighting system on the Lynx is great. So I would ride that bike all day on long trips without a problem.
