This video is great! I am a 67 year old woman who lives alone and I wanted to install a video doorbell, but my current transformer did not have enough voltage. Your instructions made it so easy to upgrade the transformer by myself. Thank you for making such a detailed video.
@Laura Marchesani, thank you for sharing your feedback and so glad that you found this video helpful!
I had an issue when I first installed my Eufy doorbell as it wouldn't even power up. After finding your video and ordering the transformer via amazon and switching out the old one, my Eufy doorbell is now working and it was all because of this video!!!! I am so grateful for you taking the time to create such an easy to follow instructional video. My friend paid someone $300 just have their video doorbell install so you also saved me some money too!
@Chase Morgan thank you so much for checking out our video and leaving these kind comments. We're very happy to hear that this video not only helped accomplish the task, but also saved you money as well!
Chase Morgan did your existing chime start to work as well or was it just needed to power the bell
You have no idea how helpful your video was. I was getting frustrated why my new doorbell camra wasn't working.
So glad to hear this helped you. Thank you for the comment and for checking out our video!
Excellent video! I searched many websites that provided insufficient or confusing information about this issue and none even remotely compared to the clarity and straightforward instruction that you have. Thank you very much!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words and glad it helped!
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
Thx!
I am in no shape or form an electrician but this video made it easy for me to swap out my transformer for my video doorbell. I had a 12V transformer before and this allowed me to upgrade to 16-24V transformer. ADT was very happy with the upgrade to install my new security system.
This is exactly what I was looking for and in a clear and concise video. Thanks!
Glad it helped and thanks so much for the feedback and for checking out our video!
No one else doing doorbell videos spoke about where the transformers were or could be, so we can't fix it if we don't know where they are. Thanks for answering that very important question!
After searching all over with no luck, I found mine attached to a floor joist in the crawlspace underneath my 70 year-old house.
Glad it helped! Thanks for checking out our video and for leaving us a comment!
They can be just about anywhere depending on the age of the home. We've heard of them being above in the attic and in utility rooms on a different floor. Glad you were able to locate yours. Thanks for checking out our video and for leaving us a comment!
Thanks, fast and easy. Straight to the point, much appreciated sir!
Thanks for checking out our video and leaving us the nice comment!
Good video. The only thing I’d say is though some of the older houses have the transformers in the box, code is to have the transformer mounted on the outside of the junction box as they get hot and present a fire hazard. Just be careful and safe guys.
even if the inside wall has insulation in it? is it okay to install it on outside of box as I want to in an exterior wall
Bro I just asked my boss for help and he said RUclips it my transformer has three screws and the two low voltage wires look the same any advice
Oooo seriously good call. Thank you for this!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Super helpful!!! I’ve had the nest doorbell and when purchasing it at Home Depot I was informed my transformer was probably old and I’d need to update it. Long story short I went the battery route and one day when charging the battery someone stole a large, pink rock my grandmother had given me out front during broad day light but I didn’t have the damn footage so I want it hardwired. This was super helpful, I haven’t done it yet but simple, clear and useful instructions so thank you
Did you get it installed?
Awesome! My Nest Doorbell chime stopped working, and after digging on the internet, understood that it's a voltage problem. Now, this video clarifies everything else for me. Clear and conscise. Thank you!
Glad it helped and thanks for checking out our video and leaving a comment!
Very interesting to me because around here in NY the transformer is almost always located on the breaker box, or within a foot or two of it, and then low voltage wire is run to the bell. Thanks for showing me this. Learned where to look if I can’t find it!
Yes, lots of different locations depending on regional trends and also ever building and contractor will do it a little differently, so sometimes you just have to look around if not finding it at first.
Appreciate the straight forward video. Was able to locate the transformer and swap it it out with a larger voltage transformer to power the new doorbell.
Thanks for the easy instructions on how to upgrade my doorbell transformer.
No problem 👍
Seriously - YOU are my hero! I did exactly as you showed.
I took a screen shoot of the replacement transformer from Amazon and order the exact same one (cheaper now).
It was a little Easter egg hunt finding my door bell transformer (I had to remove main electrical panel cover plate - then it was GO time!)
You saved me $ AND gave me single girls can do anything” bragging rights! Thank you!
I"m glad to help.
Excellent explanation about how to upgraded your transformer
Thank you!
You're welcome, glad it helped!
I just want to say "THANKS" a lot from the bottom of my heart.
@Detroiter Girl, thank you for checking out our video! We hope you found it helpful.
@@TwoNerdEFamilies I just followed all of your steps and I did it my hand alone!! I bought the stuff from the Home Deopt and installed everything my hand as I have 2 ring pros with cameras. God bless you, you made my life much better.
@Detroiter Girl great job! Thank you for telling us how it went and glad that the video helped. This is exactly what we hoped to accomplish with this channel! Take care!
Excellent video. Thank you for explaining the details clearly and in particular for the type (amazon product page, electrical diagram) and timing of your picture inserts.
Thanks Bill, glad you found the video helpful!
Thank you for being very informative. My doorbell Transformer is actually in my garage. It took me a while to find it but I looked all over the place and eventually found it on the wall near the ceiling in my garage.
Love the use of a Craftsman screwdriver 😊
😁
Well done video - one of the better videos on RUclips for this issue.
Thank you so much for the feedback and glad it helped!
Good video. I was about to go crazy, trying to locate the transformer
Amazing video! I am installing one in my friends house today!! Just need to locate the old transformer…. Great job!
Great video and thanks for the tip on the voltage detector tool, I didn't have one, so I ordered one right away. Great tool to have and once again, thanks for this video. It breaks the process down perfectly.👏🏽
This is exactly what I was looking to find out very helpful video. My ring camera status in app always showing “Low power message”. Now i know why
Happy to hear this was helpful!
This was the video I’ve been looking for. Thank you good sir
No problem!
Well my electrician won't get back to me so I'm going to attempt this...thank you for the clear instructions
You can do it!
On the west coast. Most transformers are located inside a closet of a bedroom or coat closet and is usually located closest to the chime or doorbell that goes ding dong.. On really older homes. They installed it inside the attic which is a terrible place to find and service it.
Thank you found it behind the chime box. Unfortunately I will have to replace for a higher voltage
My current chime in my house is being operated with a 5 volt transformer. I need to change it out for a 16 volt transformer to operate a Ring Pro that I want to install. I'm concerned that a 16 volt transformer will burn out the 5 volt chime that I currently have in my house. So my question is, if my current chime is operating on a 5 volt transformer, won't a 16volt or 24 volt transformer burn out that 5 volt chime ? Or do i need to upgrade the chime also ?
Did you got an answer to your question? What voltage transformer did you use? Thanks
Bump
Chime can remain, it just completes the low voltage circuit. The transformer needs to be upgraded to the 16v. If not it will definitely burn out the 5v transformer & your ring receiver.
Thank you very much. I was struggling trying to figure out why my chime wouldn't work.
Glad it helped!
Great video. Clear, concise and to the point.
If you ever decided to get rid of the doorbell camera and go back to old regular doorbell button, would that old button also work with the newer higher voltage transformer you just put in?
Best to keep the original transformer if you don't know the voltage requirements of the old doorbell.
My old system has no ground wire. Did you connect your ground wire to a copper wire or another white wire?
Great video. Unfortunately my transformer isn’t behind my chime. If you connect the Ring and it powers up can you assume your transformer is sufficient?
Thanks for the video. Successfully replaced my transformer and our doorbell works now.
Thank you, very helpful right to point.excellent video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great job--very informative. For life of me, could not figure out where transformer was, but suspect it is behind like you indicated. Will check that out!
Greatly appreciate this. Quick and easy.
Glad it helped! Thanks for checking out our video!
Thank you! You just saved me $100+
We love to hear that! Thanks for watching our video.
Excellent. Wish you talked more about the button and bell wire configuration too. Most transformers are found in the furnace room not behind the bell.
All good points, thx. We've noticed many comments since posting the video that indicate the many locations people are finding their transformers, so hopefully that gives folks some other ideas if they're not finding it right away. Thanks for the feedback and for checking out our video!
Good clear presentation 👍
Thank you 🙂
excellent video. I figure that my home will fall under the Lower Voltage Transformer like yours. When I get home, I'll have to search for the doorbell transformer and make the change like you did. Thanks for the video
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. What do you do if your old transformer only has two wires not three?
I have the same issue.
Thank you for this video..
The problem I'm running into is extremely small wire. The wire to my doorbell is around 26 gauge. Even if I have the proper transformer, can such small wire handle the volts needed?
That's a small wire! Be careful
I love your video. Thanks
My original transformer, the green wire wasn't attached to anything. It was stripped, but just hanging loss and lonely by itself.
When I replaced it with a new transformer, I put a cap on the green by itself and capped white with white and black with black. Is that correct?
Thank you for your kind words! Sounds like your new transformer did not have a ground wire either, so probably not an issue capping the green wire like you did. Is the new transformer working?
This was good and easy to follow. Bro, you should do more tutorials
Thank you for the feedback!
Learned a lot from this video thanks.
Good Video ! This is exactly what I was looking for .
Great informative video. Can you do video on why the will randomly chime continuously without no touch the door bell and how to fix that issue?
Sorry, haven't experienced that issue.
Thank you for posting such a helpful video!
Big help! Thank you
Glad it helped!
Also should have mentioned there's a difference between a 16v 10va and a 16v 30va transformer. Many times need the 30va if you want both the video doorbell and the mechanical chime to work at the same time.
Great tip!
Transformer in our house is made in US by GE, rated at 24V-40VA driving Westminster mechanical chime. I hope when I install the Ring doorbell there will be no issues.
@Tony Hwang seems like that one meets all of the requirements so don't think you'll run into any power issues. Thanks for checking out our video!
I think I need to do this. I had my Ring Doorbell Pro 2 professionally installed a year ago. About nine months later it stopped working. I called support twice which was a waste of time. My house is new and the current transformer is 16 volt. My Ring app indicated it was not getting power, so I came to the conclusion that I need the 24 volt transformer. This video should resolve my Ring doorbell issue. I hope!
Thanks for the video! Definitely what I needed.
Great Video, didn't show it actually working after you were done, also I just changed my transformer and still no internal chime, is there an app setting i need to change? Also ring box with EUFY doorbell?
You caught me! I was in the middle of a review of the Eufy doorbell, but I definitely went back to the ring.
No app setting, but it may need to be powered for a bit before coming back up. Did you ever get it working?
Great video! I upgraded my transformer but, I still cant get my door bell to make any sound with the ring. I put the old door bell and it does work but no sound with the ring. Any ideas of what I’m doing wrong?
We have the same problem ! We can’t figure out why it won’t work !
Very Good information. Thanks!
Hi there, I have two doorbell chimes attached to regular doorbell buttons (not camera or anything like that), they are attached to one transformer which is attached to the breaker box. The old transformer was 16v 10va, would I be okay to replace it with a 16v 30va?
Thank you for sharing, this was a big help for me.
Great Video, just the information I needed.
I couldn’t see it clearly. But the Green wire is Ground; Black is the Hot Wire and White is Neutral.
Is that the correct connection?
Thanks for making this YT video.
Yep!
Thanks so much! Very helpful -I have an Arlo and it wasn’t working because the transformer in our 1961 home is only 10 v 16 V.
Question: I Purchased a stronger transformer this week that is 16 V to 30 v And advertised but it’s compatible with Ring Cetera.
There are other things attached to the 10 v to 16 v older transformer. Do I just replace it with a new transformer or should I tone the door bell wires out and give it its own 16 v to 30 v transformer?
Sorry for the delayed response. It depends on what else is connected and if that will be enough total voltage to supply to everything. Some homes have multiple chimes or doorbells for different entrances. One transformer would be enough if running a video doorbell and an older analog doorbell for example, but running two or three video doorbells may require a more powerful or separate transformers in order to supply enough voltage to everything. Hope that helps!
Without the transformer, would the existing wires still work with the doorbell? I don’t have an existing chime, so will use a Ring door chime.
I'm not sure I follow. If you have existing wires from a doorbell then you'd have a transformer connected somewhere along the line. You need the proper voltage to juice the Ring doorbell.
Very helpful tutorial! Thank you.
Glad that it helped and thanks for the feedback and for checking out our video!
thanks for the vid! question: by changing the transformer, would I also need to ensure I have a chime compatible with the 16-24v transformer? or does any one work
Best to replace it if you don't know the voltage requirements of the old chime.
Thanks for posting, exactly the video I was looking for!
@kikowatzy1, thank you for checking out our video and glad it's what you were looking for!
Same...adt came to install a video door bell...but I only have 12 volts...so I’m run over to Home Depot an fix this
@Deez Sly good luck and thanks for checking out our video!
Two Nerd-E Families thanks for the knowledge...
Happy to help!
you are so lucky that your transformer is in a box behind the doorbell. That makes sense. Mine is somewhere else in the house and I have been looking for it for weeks now. The low voltage wires run down the wall and through a stud. I feel like I have looked every logical place this transformer could have been put. It is a good video, though
Sorry to hear about the trouble locating the transformer. Reviewing the comments on this video, seems others have found the transformer in a myriad of places. I'm sure you've checked in the utility room near or in the breaker box? Some have found it in the attic above the wall where the chime is installed, but sounds like your low voltage wires are running downward. Definitely sounds like a tricky one. I've had similar trouble tracking down other wires in the past and purchased a cheap $30 snake scope / inspection camera to help track things down so I didn't have to open up walls or ceilings to explore further. Best of luck to you and thanks for checking out our video.
We found ours in a closet
They can be just about anywhere!
Where do the cables from the doorbell go? It looks like you just connected the lines from the transformer to the chime, am I correct? In other words, shouldnt the chime have 4 cables coming in, two from the bell/camera and two from the transformer?
WOW. That was exactly what I needed. Thanks so very much
Thanks for this video! If you are a renter and you install the 16V transformer to be able to use a video doorbell, but then you want to take your video doorbell with you when you end the lease, will the 16V transformer be too much for the existing doorbell that was on the older transformer? or would it be safe enough? Thank you.
It could be too much depending on the old doorbell and what voltage it requires. Safest bet would be to keep the old transformer and out that back in if that's your plan.
Great video-- to the point and helpful! One question-- if the box stated 16-24VAC , how (and why) were you able to change it to a 30? Thanks!
I'll have to go back and check to see what you're referring to. Did you get yours figured out?
Does this fix the problem when our ring doorbell pro says “offline”? We had it for over a year and had no problems until a few days ago. Says the power is level 3, assuming that’s not good/ it’s not receiving much power.
That can certainly be a power issue related to the transformer.
Just the info that I needed...thank you so much!
Glad it helped! Thanks for your support!
Great video.
My problem is, my current doorbell chime doesn't have a transformer like yours does.
Would you know if there's a way to hardwire a Ring Chime?
I'm not a fan of having it plugged into an outlet.
Thank you for a great video! I am having an issue because my existing doorbell transformer is next to the circuit breaker and it's an older model with only 2 wires (no ground) while the new transformer sent by Ring has 3 wires (with a ground). How do you recommend I install this?
Best to ground it to the junction box in this case.
Having an issue with my Ring Doorbell Pro. Suspect this may be the issue and will take some voltage measurements later today. Do you still require the Pro Power Kit that comes with the Ring Doorbell Pro if I swap the transformer?
Did you figure it out?
This is easy enough, my current transformer is rated at 10V. But the problem is the chime itself - it is also rated at 10V. If I upgrade the transformer to 24V, will it fry my door chimes?
Possibly, but those are easy and inexpensive to upgrade if needed.
Awesome video thank you
question! would this allow the original chime to go off with the eufy doorbell?? i would prefer the original chime and not the silly automated one
Do i need to replace the low voltage wiring to the doorbell if I get a bigger transformer? Rn my transformer is 10v and I'm seeing 13v on the voltmeter
I don't have green ground wire on my transformer it's just black and white should I buy one with the same color as the existing one?
Most new transformers will have a ground wire, but some older ones that will be replaced may not. If you have a standard 3 wire electrical cable coming into the junction box then there should be an unshielded copper wire to connect the ground wire to from the new transformer. You can also ground to the side of a metal junction box or conduit if that's what you have. If you have a plastic j-box and no ground wire to connect to then your options are to leave the new ground wire disconnected as the old one was or to run a new ground wire to the ground screw on a nearby outlet or light switch. Hope that helps!
Nice "nuts and bolts" video! Have an identical chime. Initially by-passed the chime to power a Ring wired doorbell 2021, but wondering if upgrading to a 24V transformer would power both? Being limited to the ring app or having to buy their dedicated chime is not preferred. Would very much appreciate your thoughts. Thx!
Do I need to still jump the existing chime after I install the new transformer
Yes!
I have a Lorex doorbell cam and an electronic doorbell. Is there a transformer for electronic doorbells?
Thanks for the video! Is there a scenario where you may have to replace the chimebox in addition to the transformer to prevent any burnouts/ fire issues? TIA...
Great video step by step explained. I have a question: my transformer is in a different room from the chime. I changed it out in accordance with the video and my experience. It is not charging the ring. Any thoughts?
Thanks for watching our video and for posting your question. I would take a volt meter and just test that you're getting the proper voltage to the wires connecting to the doorbell. If no voltage reading then there may be a problem with the wiring and low voltage is sometimes caused when the wire is too long of a run for the voltage to carry strong enough to the other end. You may want to install the transformer closer in that case. If voltage is fine then it might be an issue with the doorbell itself and I would contact Ring about next steps to replace the unit. Best of luck!
I wonder if this my issue. Just got a brand new house that was closed on... watched it go from dirt to studs to being done. I installed the Ring doorbell pro 2 with no issues. The actual doorbell inside the house will not ring... I don't know what the problem is.
Is the chime alert the only problem with an underpowered transformer?
If you have a ring pro2 and a ring wired on different doors will they limit the output of the transformer?
Can you keep your existing chime? With the Eufy? Which model is it? I guess not. I don't have a chime just a transformer. Do I need a chime on the wall for this to work?
This video was great!!!! Thank you!!!!
You are so welcome!
Hi & thanks for your video. I do have a question. I was advised by Ring customer service that the transformer should not be placed within the walls because it can cause a fire. I expressed that the old doorbell, like the one you showed is already inside the wall. All I'm doing is switching out the old transformer with new. Your thoughts?
my doorbell chime does not have an old transformer like yours behind the chime box. is this right?
It's somewhere, you gotta locate it. I mentioned some possible locations in the video and there are other suggestions here in the comments. Best of luck!
Do you have video how install this door bell. I bought one but I don’t know how to do ???
Did you figure it out? Lots of videos online for that.
This video rocks! Thank you
Thanks so much for your feedback and hope it helped!
My vid doorbell stopped working, borrowed my neighbor's multimeter, and only getting 1 volt out of the transformer so the thing is shot. My concern is that I don't know which breaker will cut the power to the transformer, and if it's only showing a volt or less, how am I even going to know if I found the right breaker?
If you can't locate it, best to shut off the main to the house to be safe!
Great video, bought a Eufy video doorbell with it's own chime,my house was left wired for doorbell if I choose. I have a no original chime can I wire straight into a new transformer to reduce from 230v and then connect all the wires.
My Eufy wired 2K camera works fine except for 2 way audio. I measured a transformer in the garage and it's 17.9V but I also have a chime which I haven't the measurement of that transformer yet. I've been having issues of 2 way audio. The doorbell broadcasts audio out fine but I can't hear from the other end (delivery person). Did you encounter similar problems?
Haven't run into that issue here. How is the WiFi signal strength from the doorbell? I believe you can see the status in the app. I'd also try contacting Eufy support to see what they suggest on that one.
