Hey great video! I run an Echo CS-490 and she boogeys! I do the same thing with stumps around my homestead but an additional thing you can do to help it decompose is to bore cut a X in the center of it, do this last cause it will obv dull your chain if you go through the whole stump and catch dirt, but what this will do is allow water/bugs to get into the center and it will help it rot! I did this to a stump on our homestead a few years ago and now you can run a rod into the area where it was and its completely rotted! Just trying to help out a fellow homesteader! Its episode 4 on my channel! Back in the beginning lol

I had to laugh at the color progression of your clothes from start to finish. I used to cut split n stack a hundred FC every year with the same basic equipment. All my pants would wear out just above the knee from lifting pieces onto the splitter. I would come home from work n Cut wood every night. Im impressed by your safety gear and attention to detail with your tools. A hook will add years to your back for lifting pieces off the ground. Most important advice is to stop as soon as you're tired. Wood is very patient.

Info you... I have a bad back, so moving things around can be quite strenuous. I start up my splitter, and run the wedge to the splitting plate before moving it. I changes the center of balance so that it moves easier. Try it.

Look into a log catcher for your splitter. You'll spend a lot less time bending over to pick up the big chunks that fall to the ground. Best $50 I've spent

Well done! I loved the camera angles and the editing. If you can make the back breaking work of cutting and splitting firewood look entertaining, that is an accomplishment. Unfortunately, most guys your age have never done this and don't care to. I guess they can eat their I-Phones and freeze when to grid goes down.

I've been cutting firewood with my family since I was 4 (helping stack it that is), and have been cutting for a few years for my family and to sell on my own. I also do chainsaw repair, something nobody else in my family does. On top of that, I'm the one that has to do tune ups, because no one else cares to. It's not an age but an individual issue.

      "when to grid goes down"
The reasons for it "going down" and staying down will probably lead to other 'problems' that will not make us enjoy our food and firewood very much... lol

I really do like your wood shed. I need one like that. Good air and dry all winter too. We heat, cook and make our water hot with wood. So wood is our fuel source. That being said.
I have got to say that I like my wood splitter a whole lot better than yours. Min splits on the push and the pull. NO reset. I also have log lifter which is important for us old guys. No need for the back saver. I have picked up logs 3 times larger with no problem with the log lifter.
Also Love the old Ford. Growing up in South Carolina I learned on a 3500 to drive at 8. I later regretted knowing how to drive as I spent years out in the field on a tractor. Thanks for the video. Jim in Chile South America.

Keep the front edge of the splitting blade really sharp and the splitter won't have to work hard. It takes a lot more energy to split wood with a dull edge of the blade and your engine will last longer if you keep it sharp. l use to sharpen my blade at least once every four months. Keep track of the sharpness of the blade it's actually critical

One of my plans is to put a electric motor on the log splitter, i like using headphones working or just putting on the radio etc, and run it off a generator if im out splitting in the woods. I often kill myself trying to split very large diameter tree's, especially when you get closer to the stump. Sometimes if i can i try to split it once down the middle and work with the two half's so it's lighter, but does not always work and i have to move the log around like 10 times to try and split it all up. Sometimes with locus and other woods it can be stringy and want to stick together, so i need to use a bar to try and separate a big log after splitting. I want to try and make something for the base of the log spitter that spins around, like a round about/ flat disc for the larger diameter logs just so im not killing myself moving it each time i want to split it.

Two minutes into the cutting...when he finally got there, I saw three things I would never do and I'm not even a faller. Would not stay there with him cutting. Besides not having the splitter closer to the log....or skidding the log up closer the the shed...too much extra work in what he was doing. I agree that he should have a log catcher to help a bit. There is also a way of building out in front of the splitter when he went vertical to keep the logs from pitching forward. All hard learned lessons.

Personally, I would have sawn that tree into lumber and used the waste lumber for fire wood.

yeah if you do the math, the waste slabs when sawing boards are a whole 36% of each log. Save enough branches and maybe you can hit 50%. Then why not just take two trees make the best of each? To me this only makes sense if you're never going to cut down another oak for lumber ever again.

@@killingoldgrowthsince ok... you do you I guess, my point is Fall Line has a mill, is always generating off-slabs, and already saws wood that could be considered lower quality than water oak (sweetgum), which is why I'm questioning this particular firewood use case.

Next time why not cut down 3 trees, mill them, and just turn the off-slabs into firewood? Same amount of firewood, and it might be a better use of your resources!
The math: πr² is the cross sectional area of the log. 2r² is that of the square cant after you cut off the slabs.
So k*(πr²-2r²)=πr² where k is how many equal sized trees you need so that all the off-slabs combined become a whole trunk's worth of wood. Solve for k=πr²/(πr²-2r²)=π/(π-2)=2.7519...
If you save enough branches, you might be able to get away with taking just two! Just something to think about.

@@jedidiah5131 Matt Cremona uses offcut slabs as firewood. To my understanding, you can easily accumulate enough offcut slabs for firewood if you mill enough hardwood trees, and they aren't any worse for firewood than the rest of the tree. Is there a logical epiphany I am missing, or are you just here to troll without providing proper counterargument?
