- Milling an ugly pine log on a Wood Mizer sawmill.
In this video I mistaken call the Cooks Dura Tooth Super Sharp blade a Cats claw blade. Oops.
Here's the link to Cooks:

In this video I mill a Southern Yellow Pine log. This log was part of a batch of yard trees that were given to me for free. Today we take the Wood Mizer LT15 sawmill and make it into siding boards. This ugly log turned out some beautiful lumber. The Kubota L4701 and grapple is proving itself invaluable for milling as well as other homesteading tasks.
Cooks Saw was kind enough to send me a box of blades for free. Today we use a Dura Tooth Super Sharp.

Bob Jones Hey Bob, I agree! The sky might fall and kill both of them but Wes’s left arm and hand ain’t letting go of the kid. NoSir. The Kids safer out there and happier than anywhere in the world. Nice chose of language commenter above uses also. Doesn’t offend me. I’m 54, heard it all in my time and usually the source is, well,,,,, Just consider the source.

Perfect tractor, perfect riding companion.
I would love seeing a video on how you look at the log before you cut. Determining which way you want to start the cut

I just kept watching. You are doing a great job on that wood. I love the different camera angles you show. Others dont and this is good for your channel. Wood Mizer should be proud of the way you operate that machine and show it ability's. Nice Tractor. It fits your operation. Im sticking around and goint to watch more videos. Thanks
Cute little guy. It looks like he has been bitten by the "BIG MACHINES BUG". LOL. Be safe . Awesome 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing

It looks to me like your copilot on that Kubota is doing a good job making sure that you do things right. He's a good man.
Very nice photography. I like the cant cam. Nice editing. Spielberg would be proud.
Great tractor and grapple setup!
Thanks, Jerry. Don't know how I ever got along without it.
This and many other videos have been great
OK, OK you talked me into it. I'm going to go and get my grapple next week!! ;)
Do it!
Loved the video, Thank-you
21:07 I love it, my boy loves riding with me too.
That is a very nice log, yielding some fine boards. That tractor certainly makes loading and unloading the mill a piece of cake. Like all little boys your son looks lovingly at the tractor, my boys as was I as a kid were just the same.
I don't regret this tractor in the least! My back loves it. He'll be driving solo before I know it. Thanks for stopping by.
Um, Dad...where are your Mickey shorts? I think there is a missed opportunity there! LOL
Dad's navigator is doing all the hard work off-camera, he looks pretty tuff!
I agree, love that look on his little face as he's sitting on his dad's lap. Don't mess with me boys!
Your little boy will soon be driving the tractor for you 😄😄😄
Very soon!
Love your videos, super fun to watch. Add some Matt Risinger to your watch list, so you get your house properly water, air, vapor, and insulated. Hate to see the awesome wood you mill get deteriorated prematurely. Keep up the awesome wood work!
Been watching you for two years while in Afghanistan. Just made it home and put my order in with Woodmizer for a setup just like yours.
Cool! You'll love it!
very satisfying making your own building materials. my cedar stock is getting huge
WOW, you're getting pretty good with the tractor!
Thank you, Rick. I practice as much as I can!
I like how well your setup is coming! As an engineer, I think it’ll be helpful/safer if your sawdust was able to fall into a trough with a metal grate over it.
Bill Boger Hey Bill. I have a 15 Go just like Wes’s. And one thing I wish that was better is the sawdust exhaust. They do make an extension that carry’s it to the ground. Probably helpful. I hang a5 gallon bucket over the end of the exhaust on mine and keep a Rubbermaid trash can toward the hitch end of the mill. It’s easy for me because I can dump it easily not far from my setup. It fills up fast but keeps the trail from piling up fast also. It helps on dust being in sawyers eyes, clothes, etc Got to deal with it ether way. I have seen a few other brands have the controls on the right side of the head. When I watch mine from the left side the dust is bad on the eyes. I just chalk it up to , “that’s Sawmilling”. Maybe Wes will let us know his thoughts on it. Yal b good.
Thanks for sharing.
great video nice lumber I bet you love your new tractor keep up the great videos
It's a wonderful piece of equipment. I like it more every time I use it.
THIS CONTENT IS ALWAYS SO GOOOOOOOD.
Thanks!
Congratulations on the log handling machine. THat will make work easier and safer. But I must say, previously you did show us how to get the best results from the tools you had at hand. You showed us how to make it work.
Good idea to wash the boards off so it can suck up moisture and warp quicker.
I swear that thing looked like it was drooling before those jaws opened up to wrap around that log.
Ha!
Your little man is really growing up fast.
As pictured in your video those large blobs of old grease that are displaced by new grease are left hanging onto the machine. I found that using a pressure washer removes them promptly each time I re-lube my tractor. And that beats getting it on your clothes, your hands or all over whatever they drop onto. Plus it gives you an excuse to break out the pressure washer and have fun with it.
And by the way, a bit of Lestoil in the water helps remove the sap from the blade and makes it last longer. Less sap equals less friction and less heat. The heat causes the blade to lose it's set quicker. Hope that helps.
I like to use a gang saw for ripping slats on planks like that.
That "blue stain' in the wood is mold and it's called spaulding.
A Day sounds like you have sawed a cant or two! AC
I thought it was 'spalting'!?
Always enjoy your videos, my dad and I have an LT40HD.
Nice! Thanks!
That’s one nice tractor 🚜 ya got there...
Like the videos. You are evolving.... :-)
Great video! I really want a sawmill!
For carpenters, 'well-dried wood' would be one of the biggest assets.
Nice cuts will be great looking siding
Making memories
Bro I have the same cat, and it acts the same, I'm a woodworker and the cat hangs out all day! Awesome
Cant cam returns. You are gettin pretty handy with that new tractor 🚜 too.
Thanks, Ed!
Very nice wood
little man has a very serious look! like a foreman!
amazing video
Ha!! Nice Mickey shorts!
Kid loves his Mickey Mouse.
Wes, watching you operate your sawmill. From a side view,,, you look 👀 just like your dad!!! CHIEF
Is that a Seabee hat the little guy is wearing. Hoorah Bees!
Ga Tech, Yellow Jackets
What made you choose a woodmizer mill
I’m looking to buy one and would like some feedback
Thanks
Love the videos
Hey dude, love your channel, keep em coming. I have a suggestion, not a "your doin it wrong, do it like this" lol, just a hey try this and see if it helps. Trust your grapplers lol. In stead of going around the log to put a log on the mill, tilt them down and keep the points even with each other and only grab the light half way down and clamp it tight. Try it in the open yard before dropping a log on the mill lol. That's how I do mine and I'm able to put the logs on there super gently. I did notice how fast/jump the hydraulics are on that clamp, unless your having issues with the tractor running hot, the hydraulics are just about as strong at an idle as they are wide open throttle but waaaaay smoother. Just some thoughts from a wanna be Sawyer to a fellow Sawyer.
That dad gum mill pays for itself . Making wood for your house outta wood off yojr property. That's probably 150.00 worth of wood down here in southeast texas where im from and nk telling how much where your at
Aloha from Kauai Hawaii!!!
Aloha!
Have you ever considered adding a slab pusher to your saw.? You make a pass and when you go back it would push the slab out and drop it onto your tractor bucket save handling just a thought. Also I commented on raising pigs video and got a comment back along with a respond and receive a gift. So someone is messing with the people that watch your videos Stay Safe
I try to block those guys, but they just make new accounts. Thanks for letting me know. As far as the pusher goes, this mill won't do that. It's just a simple rope and pulley that pulls the sawhead through, so there's not much extra force available for that. I have seen mills with that feature and it's cool.
I have a question about the shy dont you mulch it and not burn it??
Great videos! How is the kiln doing? I am planning to build one. What would you do differently if you built another one?
I would follow the plans on VA Tech's website. Mine does a good job at drying lumber, but it is very difficult to load and unload.
Little dude makin sure dad's not slackin..
Very nice wood. How long do you plan on allowing the wood to season, and secondly, does that wood leave much resin on your blade?
Hi, I've been a fan for ages, ever since you started virtually. I enjoy every video and can't wait to watch the next one. I do have one problem though and that seems to be the complete waste of wood by just burning all the scraps on a huge fire. I am sure there are lots of other uses for it such as using it in your wood stove, or donating it to other people for burning in wood stoves, giving it to campsites if there are any, or even any local carpenters/joiners etc that could probably use a lot of it. Just me thinking out loud really, but it does seem an awful waste of wood. Anyway, keep up the good work and much love to you and your family. Greetings from Scotland, UK.
I was thinking the same, but maybe the ash is used for composting/planting purposes as I believe it is nutrient rich. Hopefully there is some use though, otherwise I agree it could be used in some other form.
My experience has been : some folks just don't want to put out the effort come get it,so I burn most of mine now.
Was that spot light in the close-up a hole in the roof?
You've go TV a good looking son there! (as a great grandpa,I qualify to be an expert) just saying.😁👍
what do you do with all that sawdust? compost or mulch?
Thanks for the video. I bet that tractor makes it easier on your back.
Yes it does!
NICE LUMBER DESIGHN
Got ya a NEW TRACTOR.
Yessir.
@@falllineridge looks nice
One thing I can see by watching your videos from the start is that sawdust collection has to be part of the equation when setting up a mill. Would be great if a pellet process could be set up
Most definitely, I'll probably be shoveling it out soon.
He is good, a jam up and jelly tight. TA Birmingham
Mr. FLR Are you a fan of the manual blade height adjustment? Is it simple to produce repeated accurate boards? I am considering an LT15 wide, I like the idea of computer set works and am curious if I will be satisfied without them.
The manual crank produces perfectly accurate and consistent boards, you just have to pay attention. Of course, computer networks would naturally be more accurate, but the crank does just as well. Wood Mizer did a great job engineering the manual system.
