The memories have long been forgotten and have faded with the passing of time, the once sturdy armour you wear has already fallen into disrepair and blackened by immolation from the flames, as for your trusty weapons, they have been marred by age, remaining both unused and unremembered by your side, yet despite all this, you feel as though they have never failed you, and that, in all their years, never have they betrayed you when times were tough and the stakes were dire, that they will fight with you until the very end. That is the only thing you are sure of, for everything else seems distant and dreamlike, something from a past long ago, a past that belonged to someone else, perhaps a brave hero remembered for their valiant deeds and actions, perhaps an unknown stranger who took it upon themself to do what no others would or could do, you don't remember. These thoughts drift through your ever-crumbling mind, and all the while disquiet and mental unrest looms ever closer, will these thoughts, will these possessions that once occupied another person's thoughts, in another age, in another time, even be of significance to you? The end approaches now, you see the figure coming through the fog-filled archway facing the place you have waited and pondered all this time, they are here for something, they are here to meet you, for no one has visited this place for several lifetimes. They draw their weapon, it is of an unusual design, as is their garments, but no matter, they are here to fight, for whatever reason, you no longer remember nor do you care, the answers have long lost their importance. As they walk toward you with their guard up in a readied stance, their face filled with equal amounts of awe and defiance, you try to stand, it takes several long minutes, your armour clatters together as you shake off the thick layer of ash that has covered you for as longer than you can fathom. You draw your weapon, it creaks and groans like an old beast nearing the end of its life, you try to flourish it, the movements embedded into your body, but your grip fails you, it has been too long since you last wielded it, the weapon falls to the ground weakly, for a long time you stare at it, trying to remember from whence it came from, out of the corner of your vision you see the figure relax and walks calmly, confidently towards you. Still looking at the ground, you await the your inevitable fate. They pick up the dropped weapon, testing its weight, you look up in surprise, grasping your hand, they place the weapon in your palm, you try to find the words to express your thanks, however having not spoken for so long you only manage a raspy groan, already the figure is taking their position a distance away, once again getting ready to fight you. Now armed, you call up the last vestiges of strength in your body, the final traces of concentration and sanity to aid you in this battle, now blazing with old energies, you charge stone-faced towards your opponent, and they to you. ... You find yourself face down in the ash covered ground, there is a pain emanating from somewhere on your body but it is fading quickly, you try to look up and see the victorious opponent walking towards the dying embers of the flame you have held watch over all this time, a fragment of memory strikes you suddenly, with the last remaining strength you have left, you crawl towards the base of a pillar that pierces up thought the ground, wiping away the charred face and ash, you uncover the writing scrawled onto the surface, you remember now, this was your name, You had a name, that was what as missing all along, a feeling of profound emancipation flows over your mind, and you realize, that with a name you can finally, rest. Rest in the warmth, coming from the newly linked bonfire. A well-earned rest, Chosen Undead. Yep, I think this is definitely the theme that plays for the Chosen Undead's fight when its time for the arrival of the next successor to the Flame.

@Marek Tužák Sure it was, but that doesn't make it a good remaster. I've seen remasters that bring games from 2010 nearly up to the quality of the time at which they were released. Halo Anniversary, The Last of Us, even Skyrim. Dark Souls remastered is a disgrace when it comes to that. It's still far behind a lot of 2014 games that I know visually, and barely any bugs or exploits were fixed. So to charge $40 for that is insane. It was $20 for me as I already had the Prepare To Die edition on PC, and even then it's among the worst $20's I've spent.
Everytime I hear this, I think of Solaire to be honest. Just gazing at the sun, wishing to be acknowledged as a hero among heroes, with you as his only acquaintance who shared a journey with him when things looked bright. Through the times when you've fought unimaginable foes like Smough and Ornstein, and found a ray of hope. However that ray of hope faded, like the fake sun in Anor Londo. Through the heights and depths of Lordran he found nothing, not even hope, and in the end he was tripping through the crags, and branches in the dark depths of Lost Izalith. As he reached for what seemed to be the symbol of his hope, it was stomped on by you; his true friend who knew who he was, because you could never lie to Solaire. Through thick and thin you take on the most impossible challenge, you go to the beginning of all beginnings with Solaire to fight the thing he treasured the most; the Sun personified as a shell of an old man who lost everything.

The boy was far beyond saving. His movements were slow like an old man's, as if the very air had the thickness of a spider web. His skin had turned to a shade of brown that even the crows had forsaken. Most of all, his eyes were turning gray, not unlike those of a dead fish. He was hollowing from the inside. Now even the anxiety was fading; as he became oblivious to the notion that his mind was colapsing. For weeks he had screamed and moaned for his mother; now a stranger's name, sounding more and more like a scream of agony. No one had come but the dreaded men that had murdered him to harvest... something. Something about a curse. He was silent now. Laying down on his back under the rain. Waiting for a death that could not come. The young man put his hand in his pocket and felt it. He smiled one last time, and in a final spark of humanity, he whispered to himself: "I had a name". Damien Kelly Oscar gave his life fighting the Asylum Demon trying to get cell keys inside and letting random undead escape without even knowing if the prophecy that is foretold is even true, just by good fortune he happens to meet us before he goes hollowed and can't be recovered. Thanks to this one and only meeting with him right before his death, we managed to set out on the journey he had hoped to accompany, just so we could (depending on your ending) link the fire and sustain it for only god knows how short a period, perhaps just a lifetime, with nobody to carry on your story. Before I ramble on about other stuff, I agree that Oscar fits this song very well. Just another knight filled with a glimmer of hope, and by pure chance, kick-starts the entire adventure by sacrificing himself. It's probably for this reason that whenever I see an image Oscar, the first thing I think of is a player character instead of him. Just another nameless undead soldier. Woah sorry I'm rambling again.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, that story ends up like that because he couldn't cope with losing the spot of the chosen undead to you and was trying to find his own reason to exist. All he could focus on was that HE was the one who originally escaped and yet was stuck in your shadow after all he'd done for you. I don't care what people say about Solaire, Rhea, Lautrec or anyone else. Oscar is my favourite character in Dark Souls, even if his story was cut down.
this reminds me of a reddit post. Two best friends played dark souls together. One got sick, and the other refused to leave his side. The sick one was determined to beat dark souls with his friend. And you know what? They did it. They beat that game and his wish was granted. His friend passed away about 2 hours later, in that hospital room with his friend. I met the poster. He's a good guy and I respect this series. No matter in life or death, friendship is powerful. And love is the brightest flame there will ever be. you don't have to like my comment. Just let it hit you. We miss you John. May you find your worth in this new life.
We all had that moment during our journey. All we wanted to do was give up... Let the hollowing take effect... But it never did... We pushed forward, against all odds... We died... We failed... But we never stopped. We all kept fighting to the bitter end, and when we finally fought Gwyn, we all put the pour souls to rest... But from there, nobody knowns what happened... Some people claimed the chosen undead linked the fire... Others claimed that he or she let the fire die out... Not much was know about the chosen undead, not their gender, their personallity or their voice... They were nameless... But the ironic thing is this: The one who succeded was forgotten, but the ones who failed were remembered... Siegmeyer... Oscar... Solaire... Many had sacrificed themselves to help the chosen undead... But those people were the only ones who knew something about the Chosen Undead, they knew that he or she would never give up, which gave them a last dose of hope before hollowing...

I do believe...the curse has caught up to me. What was the name of the man who started my journey? He gave me the Estus Flask. And he set me on the path that I have taken. Such an important man... So long has my journey been...or...was it short? What was my goal, again? And...wait, why am I fighting this man? Who is this man? He's quite powerful indeed. A worthy foe. But...but why? Is it just me who's reminded of the Pendant by this song? The pendant is nothing more than a reminder that you once had a life and loving family, that you had a name. The pendant is the most useless item in the game, but it's the most poetic item in the game.
Role-playing in SoulsBorne feels so amazing unlike any other games. Imagine a warrior close to losing his sanity but the only thing keeping him the way he is, was nothing more but a pendant. Was it from his lover? A gift from his parents? Perhaps his daughter's, who lost her life when they were attacked by monsters. And his purpose to live is to slay as many monsters before he loses his grip in life. SoulsBorne will always be my no. 1 beloved franchise.

It sounds silly but sometimes when I listen to this song and think back on the chosen undeads journey I'm nearly brought to tears by your music. When I began DS I believed it would be a game I'd enjoy no more than another. I heard people talk about the hard boss battles and extreme difficulty but never heard anyone talk about the beauty of the game. When I played I loved every second and would lose track of time and play for hours. I loved dark souls, every one of them. I teared up at the end of 3, not because it was over but because DS is over. I know it's better this way but I'll still miss them. I loved this game and love all of you, who made it the best experience ive ever had with a video game. Thank You All And Goodbye.

I remember wanting to give up on this game...I'm glad I didn't, because in the end it was great to discover new places, follow the stories of other travelers and die over and over and over again to just make that final choice. This game will always keep a special place in my heart.
I think the title "I had a name" for the remix, and "nameless song" for the original really encapsulates what it means for someone to go hollow in Dark Souls. We see a lot of the other characters go hollow and forget themselves. Lucatiel, for example, asks you to remember her name, because she herself forgets it. Solaire also loses his purpose, eventually falling to a false "sun", the sunlight parasite that corrupted Solaire. "Nameless song" just perfectly shows us an example of something forgotten, in a series of games about people who forget themselves

Beautiful. Simply Beautiful. And the title is very fitting, considering all the hints towards the chosen undead, but no one really remembers him or what he did. He just stated as a "saint who threw himself into a fire". It's sad, really. Generations after Generations pass and all you did in Dark Souls and Dark Souls II just become forgotten whenever a new Kingdom rises out of the ashes of the land before. And for what? Why even this effort? Just so more people can die for nothing? Damn... Dark Soul's lore isn't just the story of a game It's art. A masterpiece. It makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you question yourself, your actions and even your character. It makes you question life. It makes you question your own self.
The story that Dark Souls tells so masterfully is the story of real life. 2000 years from now, most people won't remember this generation. They won't remember you or me. Even when people play pivotal roles in survival, no one will remember. Humans are doomed to repeat this cycle.

This song reminds how important dark souls was to me. I was going through bouts of depression while I was playing it. The game made me rage, laugh, and cry. It taught me he most important life lesson I have ever learned. The world may be out to gt you, but you have to persevere. You have to keep going, keep fighting. Fall down seven times get up 8. Fighting lord gwyn was the most difficult thing for me. I wanted to kill him so I could get revenge for all of my friends he made hollow. For all of the pain and suffering he put everybody through. When the theme of gwyn played... and I saw his new name. The lord of cinders, he was once the lord of sunlight. I felt terribly sad, and when I killed him with a backstab I knownhe would have thanked me. A god afraid of the dark, and eventually his own mortality. When I sacrificed myself to the flame the sense of accomplishment I had was amazing. This is not just a game this is a lesson, an experience that eveyone feels different. But we can all say that we felt some of thse same emotions. We all have a name, you just need to do something for people to remember it...
When I listen to this I think of my DS1 character, their spirit perhaps, a hero long forgotten, sitting at the First Flame and inviting my DS3 character to link the fire as they had centuries before them Also I cry a lot
Well your DS1 character doesn't really "invite" you to link the flame...merely tests you to se if you are worthy of gwyn and he decides if you link the fire throughout the fight, if you emerge victorious you are seen as the perfect way to link the fire and extend the most feared age, the age of fire, where even the gods can turn on you, the age of dark was natures course and it should have been that way since the start, gwyn is scared of a little darkness hehe
thing is Gwynn already broke the order. when he linked the fire he linked it to humans. that we could not survive without the flame. that to retain our precious humanity and sanity we would be forced to feed it keep alive a dying age just a little longer. of course in dark souls three we see that even this has been broken the Lord of cinders who returned want nothing to do with the flame they are disillusioned and in the end your undead is the true chosen one the one waited for who can correct the first sin and bring about the true age of man and the dark soul

To the Chosen Undead, a hero who was manipulated into extending the age of fire, they had such determination and hope. That hope was that one day the curse would end and the age of fire that had destroyed their soul and mind would be destroyed and replaced by the age of man.
Man I love everything about this remix, especially the title. It brings to mind all the characters you interact with, their fates...even all the mindless hollows were once men with names.
The very first note of this reminds me of the end of ME3, the song that plays. It instantly strikes a chord in my heart, and the remainder of the song plays along those chords. Bravo.

Yuuko Baby ...i think in the end if it wasn't linked oolacile 2.0 wouldve happened, by linking it, you slow down the coming darkness and let it come more naturally integrating into a balance between light and dark. Thus why there is still dark magic in the form of hexes but the humanity sprite no longer exists because instead of being focused manifestations of the dark soul it's now everywhere.
Yea, I thought about linking the fire with that logic. But I always thought of what Gwyn was doing to be misguided ambition, and him trying to stop the course of nature. Which is why I chose being a dark lord.

Whenever i listen to this song, it causes a pain to grow in my chest. Maybe sadness? Maybe nostalgia? I don't know. Hoooly shit this is good. Hoooooooooly shit. EDIT: I really liked how, just like Nameless Song, the opening and closing notes are identical, reflective of the world stuck in a cycle of light and dark. Goodjob man.
"Name... Name..." The words come from the old one's decrepit lips as it stares at the newcomer from under a thick leather hood. "I had a name... Just as you have a name." It starts off quietly, it's voice slowly becoming stronger with each word. It sits up taller, the room lightens up for a few brief moments before it deflates again. "A name." The phrase is a mantra almost as it hunches over again, it's face becoming hidden. The newcomer takes a few steps back as tears strike the marble floor. It slowly sits up again, its hood falling back. Sitting in front of him was the one they had storied. The chosen undead. The one who had let the flame die out. He was supposed to feel anger. Hatred. Because he was the reason that your family was gone. But yet, nothing came, nothing more than a striking fear of what one could become once a name was lost.
FromSoft made a game for the players to enjoy by finding their purpose in the game. The world of Dark Souls is not without purpose. Its purpose is for you to find it. You couldn't make your own purpose without the world first having potential. Action comes from within, but purpose comes from without.

My gosh this piece is just so absolutely beautiful. I already loved the nameless song but this is just an absolute masterpiece that I can listen to over and over again and always be on the verge of tears. Stunning work my friend and I sincerely hope to hear more wonderful tunes from yourself especially with the near arrival of Dark Souls II!
I still think on that creature from the Abyss that preyed upon me. My faculties were far from lucid, but I quite clearly sensed certain emotions. A wrenching nostalgia, a lost joy, an object of obsession, and a sincere hope to reclaim it… Could these thoughts belong to the beast from the Abyss? But if that were true, then perhaps it is no beast after all?
I threw this together while listening to this song, since it resonated too much inside of my soul. Enjoy it, if you will. "My name...? I seem to have forgotten it, but that's normal isn't it? The fate of us Undead, we are to go Hollow, are we not? It is the natural events of this world, and we can't fight nature. Say, you ask of mine but, what is your name?" _PC tells their name._ "Ahh, such a hopeful name you have. I'm glad you can remember it, despite all that's happened. In fact, I admire you... you know that? You have the strength and determination to keep going, to keep pushing forward despite what's all happened to you and... you never consider giving up. How do you do it?" _PC responds with "I don't know."_ "That's quite alright, but I'll be cheering for you on your quest... on your journey. Just... one more thing, please? Lend me your strength one final time? I know I ask too much but, if you'll be so kind...?" _PC nods in response._ "Ahh, that fills me with such relief.... thank you. I can go Hollow, knowing that there was someone there for me until the end. This may be the worst time to tell but... I've grown quite fond of you during our endeavors. So please... don't lose hope, keep pushing forward with that ironclad will of yours. I may be Hollow but... I will always be by your side, just as you have mine. And here, take this." _PC opens their hand to accept the item, a brooch with a burning flame inside it's jewel._ "It's an old family heirloom of mine, passed down to the ones we love. I don't want you to go Hollow like me so.... take this. It should help you remember me on your journey. Now go, you have a duty to fulfill... don't let my death weigh you down." _PC nods and walks away, doing the 'Quiet Resolve' Gesture as they leave. Eventually they open up the brooch and examine it, the description reading:_ _"The Family Heirloom of your Companion, passed down to those the bearer loved. It's flame burns bright with the affinity they shared for you, for you were their light. Warm and Sweet memories flow from the warmth of the flame."_
I remember Capra... I remenber Bed of Chaos... I remember the darkness of Tomb of giant... But still I can't remember a bad moment on dark souls. Strange...

It's funny. No matter how many times you die, no matter how many times you fail, no matter how many times those darkwraiths come and try to murder us......we just keep going. We all found a reason to keep going, and we won. So many things we could have fought for.... For Solaire and his sun, for Siegemeyer and his daughter, for my fair lady. In memory of Oscar, or perhaps Kirk, for the honor of artorias. Perhaps personal gain, or maybe just a love for battle. Perhaps you have your own reason,known in the history of your character. Or perhaps you are like Oscar would have been....seeking a purpose. No matter what we fought for, we all came to the same ending....a duel with the god of light. Truly a memorable experience, one that shall stick with all of us for the rest of our lives....
It's neat to look back on a 10 year old comment from yourself. Cringing all the while at your attempts at sounding profound...but at the same time missing that long forgotten wonder that fueled the cringe.

Can't believe this was published on my birthday... I understand that probably means nothing at all, but for me, it makes the music all the more impactful. My character gave his soul to the flame, to continue what Gwyn began and also what Vendrick failed to do. Great work Alex and best of the luck for the future :P

Some people make some weird unrelated stories, but here is how I see this song personally: Remember that at the end, **cannonically** the chosen undead links the fire? Well, I'm pretty sure there was nobody to see CU to do it, so obviously no one could actually tell who continued the age of fire, apart from Frank, yet it's unknown if he will tell others about our feat or not. Well, this song represents if people would actually know about chosen undead's feats, turning the player into a legendary hero, getting him a **name**, maybe from personal notes and stuff, survivors who used to talk the chosen undead and etc, and then they find out that it was a low-rank city guard (for me, canonical class is knight, ok?).
I love the positive/hopeful vibe you've placed on this track, feels like a Swan-Song to Dark Souls. Lets you look back now we've conquered the game, and makes me itch to move on to the unknown of Dark Souls 2!

you know, I find this comment interesting because I cant remember any of the names of my dark souls characters. its as if somewhere during the intense journey of this game your name gets lost. As with your sanity and your humanity. I guess that's what the song is probably saying though.
No matter how many titles FromSoft release, how many Souls-Like games are released or even how many remasters these games will get in the future.... This is one of the best videogame trilogies in all of gaming that I actually feel happy to have been put to rest
It was finally done. My journey had reached its end as the knight whom represented those who came before, collapsed and thrust it's coiled blade into the ground before sinking into the ash. Exhausted, I fell to my knees. There was no sense of triumph, no rush of victory...I was tired. Clutching my blade, i pushed myself to my feet and limped towards the flame. I reached my hand out, and the flame leapt into my palm. I gazed upon the flickering little flame for a moment, and then closed my hand. The small ribbons of flame flickered between my fingers. Slowly, the world around me grew dimmer alongside the flames. As the light faded, I recalled my journey. The people I met, the places i saw. I smiled faintly to myself as i reflected on my journey. I sighed before suddenly feeling something against my chest. Reaching under my armor, i pulled it out and saw it was a locket. I was confused as to where I had picked it up. And then i remembered, I had always had it. I opened it and inside were two small portraits, one was of my face, and the other of a woman whose face seemed familiar, and yet completely strange. Beneath each portrait was a name, though it was too dark now to read. The flame in my other hand was now barely an ember. I realized I was cold, and my body was numb. As the ember grew cold, and finally, at long last, the light faded. As the tears rolled down my face, and my eyes grew to heavy to stay open, I smiled and whispered to myself, at the very moment that total darkness had consumed the world, "I had a name..." and then...there was nothing.
Farewell slayer of demons, chosen undead, bearer of the curse, ashen one, and good hunter. You have given me a wonderful time, and experience. even though it wasn't easy some times, you made the impossible possible. You wil never be forgotten to me.
This game's greatest evil is that moment when you defeat Gwyn and realize that all of your pain was for nothing. All linking the first fire does is banish the dark for a little bit longer, and becoming the Dark Lord only ensures that the downfall of Lordran will come even more swiftly. You stand and fight against all of the odds, only to reach the finish line and realize there's no crock of gold, no princess, no satisfaction- only the ever patient embrace of the darkest night waiting to take you back.
That is what live is. A fight to keep the darkness at bay for as long as possible. It's a battle we will definitely lose one day, but we fight on regardless. Better to live on your feet than die on your knees.
And at that moment I took a deep breath, my comrades, my friends and everyone that I ever cared for put their dying hopes and wishes on me. As I remembered them all, I took a step forward, then another and another until I was in a full sprint to the kiln of the first flame. The foes were tough but I had the burning will to keep going and defeat gwyn. So I made my way to the fog gate, a sense of achievement hit me and at that moment I stepped through to complete the dying wishes of my comrades and myself. As I ran to gwyn, I shouted "I will defeat you and link the fire!" My take while listening to this beauty lolz.
"Ahh, thats where the book ends traveler," the old lady said "Now would you kindly take this and put it back on the shelves". As the traveler took hold of the book a small piece of paper fell from it. It looked scorched but not badly, as the traveler bent over the to pick up the paper, he flipped it over and saw a few words. "Remember this, I had a name..." The traveler said outloud. The old lady looked at him a bit surprised. "Oh my, so that heroic fool left something to remember him by..." She said while looking down and smiling "You know what traveler, keep that book. It'll be more of use to you, the wheels of time are turning again". With that, the young traveler left the old lady's house and set way for his journey. Forgot to include this, tell me what ya'll think on it :3

anthony Hernandez My character, after realizing the fight was futile and the curse remains unbroken, would go on a reckless rampage. At the end of this rampage, I imagine him finally being hollow. Finally breaking down. He would give his predecessor the hardest fight of his/her life, despite being a shadow of his former self. In his dying moments, he would crash to his knees, tears in his eyes, and would remember what he fought for. He would lift his sword above his head, and stab it viscously into the ground before fading away. As his predecessor approached the blade, he/she would notice a chain necklace wrapped around the hilt, a locket with pictures of loved ones long forgotten concealed within. Roughly etched onto the hilt would be an equivalent of brail on one side, and on the other would be the translation. "I had name!", with power and rage flowing through the letters, ready to lash out at all in the world that had devoured his hope. And then it would sink in... that he had been blind.

Every time I listen to this song I think of every moment that was special to me through this series. I think about my first playthrough, I think about delving into the lore for the first time, I remember the frustration and the joy that came with it all. I listen to this song and it helps me reflect on everything this game, this franchise has done for me, how much it's affected my life and the hand it played in shaping me to be the person I am today. I can say with absolute certainty that this series has had one of if not the greatest impact on my life over any other piece of media and I will always be grateful for the journeys it took me on, for the stories it told me, and all the joy it's gifted me. A solemn and heartfelt thank you to Dark Souls, and to you Alex, for making such wonderful....absolutely outstanding and inspirational music. May you all have an amazing and spectacular day and may you ever find plenty of reasons to smile.
I consider my dark souls character to have a story... My first that resided in dark souls 1, a knight fighting for what he considered to be just without any real understanding of the world but as his story continued he learnt and grew stronger. The adversary's he faced crumbled one by one until he stood before the ashen lord of cinders and parried him to the ground. Finally everything was over however he woke up back in the asylum on a repeat of the original journey, I considered him hollow at ng+3 when I finally died to ornstein and smough with 99 humanity which I intended to use to max rank with the dark wraith covenant. A pure knight that in the end was forced to seek power until he couldn't acquire anymore and perished. My dark souls 3 character, A brute that had tried to help many NPC's but never succeeded in helping a single one to the end of their questline. He had missed siegmayer in the well, failed to find Anri in the catacombs and did not piece together the implications of giving a blind girl a book of sinister magic. He was a club wielder whom donned the armour of black iron tarkus and much like tarkus had attempted to help his people only to fail. He hollowed upon his only success, defeating geal and giving the paint to the little girl. I like the image that he still sits in the painters room, protecting her from any one that still wished to harm her. My bloodborne character, An odd man that lives an unsatisfied life. Upon entering Yharnam he found purpose and dedicated his body and soul to uprooting every secret it held, slaughtering every beast and overcoming every countless hardship. His story is still continuing and while his holy Ludwig sword has been coated in the blood of almost every hunter and beast some still escape his grasp, however they can't hide forever and one day he shall allow himself to fall to the moon presences enticement and become the hunter's guide in the dream. Perhaps he hopes that someday a hunter like himself will show up and return to him the excitement he felt when fighting Ludwig, Gherman, Gascogine, The Oprhan of Kos and so many other combatants. Maybe one day I'll return to all these characters and help them finish their quests, I could help the knight back on his path and gather more humanity but offer it instead to the chaos spider so that solaire may be saved, I could help the brute and with this new knowledge save everyone from the demise that they faced, and perhaps the odd man might unravel the entirety of his world and be finally satisfied.
Truly such a beautiful remix, it has such a hopeful feeling to it then the actual ending of Dark souls one, it's truly a song which fills you with a sense of completion, i mean honestly just imagine ending the game off with this after the ending scene,it would give a hopeful feeling to you, whether you linked or abandoned the flame,the future seemed bright whether it was through sacrifice or retaliation to a fate you wanted to deny,this song gives off all of those emotions at once, a huge sense of completion at a game that if you're a first timer or a hardened veteran fills you with satisfaction for the trials you faced, and in the end you'll be remembered throughout the ages as a single name, the name you chose and the meaning that names gives as well, the name of the chosen undead who defeated the great lord gwyn and rekindled /abandoned the flame.truly a great remix

It has been decades, centuries since you, the Chosen Undead, Linked the Fire.
The memories have long been forgotten and have faded with the passing of time, the once sturdy armour you wear has already fallen into disrepair and blackened by immolation from the flames, as for your trusty weapons, they have been marred by age, remaining both unused and unremembered by your side, yet despite all this, you feel as though they have never failed you, and that, in all their years, never have they betrayed you when times were tough and the stakes were dire, that they will fight with you until the very end.
That is the only thing you are sure of, for everything else seems distant and dreamlike, something from a past long ago, a past that belonged to someone else, perhaps a brave hero remembered for their valiant deeds and actions, perhaps an unknown stranger who took it upon themself to do what no others would or could do, you don't remember.
These thoughts drift through your ever-crumbling mind, and all the while disquiet and mental unrest looms ever closer, will these thoughts, will these possessions that once occupied another person's thoughts, in another age, in another time, even be of significance to you?
The end approaches now, you see the figure coming through the fog-filled archway facing the place you have waited and pondered all this time, they are here for something, they are here to meet you, for no one has visited this place for several lifetimes.
They draw their weapon, it is of an unusual design, as is their garments, but no matter, they are here to fight, for whatever reason, you no longer remember nor do you care, the answers have long lost their importance.
As they walk toward you with their guard up in a readied stance, their face filled with equal amounts of awe and defiance, you try to stand, it takes several long minutes, your armour clatters together as you shake off the thick layer of ash that has covered you for as longer than you can fathom.
You draw your weapon, it creaks and groans like an old beast nearing the end of its life, you try to flourish it, the movements embedded into your body, but your grip fails you, it has been too long since you last wielded it, the weapon falls to the ground weakly, for a long time you stare at it, trying to remember from whence it came from, out of the corner of your vision you see the figure relax and walks calmly, confidently towards you.
Still looking at the ground, you await the your inevitable fate.
They pick up the dropped weapon, testing its weight, you look up in surprise, grasping your hand, they place the weapon in your palm, you try to find the words to express your thanks, however having not spoken for so long you only manage a raspy groan, already the figure is taking their position a distance away, once again getting ready to fight you.
Now armed, you call up the last vestiges of strength in your body, the final traces of concentration and sanity to aid you in this battle, now blazing with old energies, you charge stone-faced towards your opponent, and they to you.
...
You find yourself face down in the ash covered ground, there is a pain emanating from somewhere on your body but it is fading quickly, you try to look up and see the victorious opponent walking towards the dying embers of the flame you have held watch over all this time, a fragment of memory strikes you suddenly, with the last remaining strength you have left, you crawl towards the base of a pillar that pierces up thought the ground, wiping away the charred face and ash, you uncover the writing scrawled onto the surface, you remember now, this was your name,
You had a name,
that was what as missing all along, a feeling of profound emancipation flows over your mind, and you realize, that with a name you can finally, rest.
Rest in the warmth, coming from the newly linked bonfire.

@Marek Tužák Sure it was, but that doesn't make it a good remaster. I've seen remasters that bring games from 2010 nearly up to the quality of the time at which they were released. Halo Anniversary, The Last of Us, even Skyrim. Dark Souls remastered is a disgrace when it comes to that. It's still far behind a lot of 2014 games that I know visually, and barely any bugs or exploits were fixed.
So to charge $40 for that is insane. It was $20 for me as I already had the Prepare To Die edition on PC, and even then it's among the worst $20's I've spent.

Everytime I hear this, I think of Solaire to be honest. Just gazing at the sun, wishing to be acknowledged as a hero among heroes, with you as his only acquaintance who shared a journey with him when things looked bright. Through the times when you've fought unimaginable foes like Smough and Ornstein, and found a ray of hope. However that ray of hope faded, like the fake sun in Anor Londo. Not to mention, The picture seems to go right along with the title. Oscar's name was never officially told.
Damien Kelly Oscar gave his life fighting the Asylum Demon trying to get cell keys inside and letting random undead escape without even knowing if the prophecy that is foretold is even true, just by good fortune he happens to meet us before he goes hollowed and can't be recovered.
Thanks to this one and only meeting with him right before his death, we managed to set out on the journey he had hoped to accompany, just so we could (depending on your ending) link the fire and sustain it for only god knows how short a period, perhaps just a lifetime, with nobody to carry on your story.
Before I ramble on about other stuff, I agree that Oscar fits this song very well.
Just another knight filled with a glimmer of hope, and by pure chance, kick-starts the entire adventure by sacrificing himself.
It's probably for this reason that whenever I see an image Oscar, the first thing I think of is a player character instead of him. Just another nameless undead soldier.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, that story ends up like that because he couldn't cope with losing the spot of the chosen undead to you and was trying to find his own reason to exist. All he could focus on was that HE was the one who originally escaped and yet was stuck in your shadow after all he'd done for you.
I don't care what people say about Solaire, Rhea, Lautrec or anyone else. Oscar is my favourite character in Dark Souls, even if his story was cut down.

this reminds me of a reddit post. Two best friends played dark souls together. One got sick, and the other refused to leave his side. The sick one was determined to beat dark souls with his friend. And you know what? They did it. They beat that game and his wish was granted. His friend passed away about 2 hours later, in that hospital room with his friend.
I met the poster. He's a good guy and I respect this series. No matter in life or death, friendship is powerful. And love is the brightest flame there will ever be. you don't have to like my comment. Just let it hit you.

But those people were the only ones who knew something about the Chosen Undead, they knew that he or she would never give up, which gave them a last dose of hope before hollowing...

Imagine a warrior close to losing his sanity but the only thing keeping him the way he is, was nothing more but a pendant. Was it from his lover? A gift from his parents? Perhaps his daughter's, who lost her life when they were attacked by monsters. And his purpose to live is to slay as many monsters before he loses his grip in life.

When I began DS I believed it would be a game I'd enjoy no more than another. I heard people talk about the hard boss battles and extreme difficulty but never heard anyone talk about the beauty of the game. When I played I loved every second and would lose track of time and play for hours. I loved dark souls, every one of them. I teared up at the end of 3, not because it was over but because DS is over. I know it's better this way but I'll still miss them. I loved this game and love all of you, who made it the best experience ive ever had with a video game. Thank You All And Goodbye.

I remember wanting to give up on this game...I'm glad I didn't, because in the end it was great to discover new places, follow the stories of other travelers and die over and over and over again to just make that final choice. This game will always keep a special place in my heart.
I think the title "I had a name" for the remix, and "nameless song" for the original really encapsulates what it means for someone to go hollow in Dark Souls. We see a lot of the other characters go hollow and forget themselves. Lucatiel, for example, asks you to remember her name, because she herself forgets it. Solaire also loses his purpose, eventually falling to a false "sun", the sunlight parasite that corrupted Solaire. "Nameless song" just perfectly shows us an example of something forgotten, in a series of games about people who forget themselves

And the title is very fitting, considering all the hints towards the chosen undead, but no one really remembers him or what he did. He just stated as a "saint who threw himself into a fire".
It's sad, really. Generations after Generations pass and all you did in Dark Souls and Dark Souls II just become forgotten whenever a new Kingdom rises out of the ashes of the land before.

It's art. A masterpiece. It makes you think, it makes you cry, it makes you question yourself, your actions and even your character.
It makes you question life.
It makes you question your own self.
The story that Dark Souls tells so masterfully is the story of real life. 2000 years from now, most people won't remember this generation. They won't remember you or me. Even when people play pivotal roles in survival, no one will remember. Humans are doomed to repeat this cycle.
But when we are all dust, we will meet again, rejoining whatever life force we all are a little piece of.

This song reminds how important dark souls was to me. I was going through bouts of depression while I was playing it. The game made me rage, laugh, and cry. It taught me he most important life lesson I have ever learned. The world may be out to gt you, but you have to persevere. You have to keep going, keep fighting. Fall down seven times get up 8. Fighting lord gwyn was the most difficult thing for me. I wanted to kill him so I could get revenge for all of my friends he made hollow. For all of the pain and suffering he put everybody through. When the theme of gwyn played... and I saw his new name. The lord of cinders, he was once the lord of sunlight. I felt terribly sad, and when I killed him with a backstab I knownhe would have thanked me. A god afraid of the dark, and eventually his own mortality. When I sacrificed myself to the flame the sense of accomplishment I had was amazing. This is not just a game this is a lesson, an experience that eveyone feels different. But we can all say that we felt some of thse same emotions. We all have a name, you just need to do something for people to remember it...
When I listen to this I think of my DS1 character, their spirit perhaps, a hero long forgotten, sitting at the First Flame and inviting my DS3 character to link the fire as they had centuries before them

Well your DS1 character doesn't really "invite" you to link the flame...merely tests you to se if you are worthy of gwyn and he decides if you link the fire throughout the fight, if you emerge victorious you are seen as the perfect way to link the fire and extend the most feared age, the age of fire, where even the gods can turn on you, the age of dark was natures course and it should have been that way since the start, gwyn is scared of a little darkness hehe
thing is Gwynn already broke the order. when he linked the fire he linked it to humans. that we could not survive without the flame. that to retain our precious humanity and sanity we would be forced to feed it keep alive a dying age just a little longer. of course in dark souls three we see that even this has been broken the Lord of cinders who returned want nothing to do with the flame they are disillusioned and in the end your undead is the true chosen one the one waited for who can correct the first sin and bring about the true age of man and the dark soul

To the Chosen Undead, a hero who was manipulated into extending the age of fire, they had such determination and hope. That hope was that one day the curse would end and the age of fire that had destroyed their soul and mind would be destroyed and replaced by the age of man.
Man I love everything about this remix, especially the title. It brings to mind all the characters you interact with, their fates...even all the mindless hollows were once men with names.
The very first note of this reminds me of the end of ME3, the song that plays.
It instantly strikes a chord in my heart, and the remainder of the song plays along those chords. Bravo.

FromSoft made a game for the players to enjoy by finding their purpose in the game. The world of Dark Souls is not without purpose. Its purpose is for you to find it. You couldn't make your own purpose without the world first having potential. Action comes from within, but purpose comes from without.

My gosh this piece is just so absolutely beautiful. I already loved the nameless song but this is just an absolute masterpiece that I can listen to over and over again and always be on the verge of tears. Stunning work my friend and I sincerely hope to hear more wonderful tunes from yourself especially with the near arrival of Dark Souls II!

My faculties were far from lucid, but I quite clearly sensed certain emotions.
A wrenching nostalgia, a lost joy, an object of obsession, and a sincere hope to reclaim it…

You have the strength and determination to keep going, to keep pushing forward despite what's all happened to you and... you never consider giving up. How do you do it?"
_PC responds with "I don't know."_
"That's quite alright, but I'll be cheering for you on your quest... on your journey. Just... one more thing, please? Lend me your strength one final time? I know I ask too much but, if you'll be so kind...?"
_PC nods in response._
"Ahh, that fills me with such relief.... thank you. I can go Hollow, knowing that there was someone there for me until the end. This may be the worst time to tell but... I've grown quite fond of you during our endeavors. So please... don't lose hope, keep pushing forward with that ironclad will of yours. I may be Hollow but... I will always be by your side, just as you have mine. And here, take this."
_PC opens their hand to accept the item, a brooch with a burning flame inside it's jewel._
"It's an old family heirloom of mine, passed down to the ones we love. I don't want you to go Hollow like me so.... take this. It should help you remember me on your journey. Now go, you have a duty to fulfill... don't let my death weigh you down."
_PC nods and walks away, doing the 'Quiet Resolve' Gesture as they leave. Eventually they open up the brooch and examine it, the description reading:_
_"The Family Heirloom of your Companion, passed down to those the bearer loved. It's flame burns bright with the affinity they shared for you, for you were their light. Warm and Sweet memories flow from the warmth of the flame."_

It's funny. No matter how many times you die, no matter how many times you fail, no matter how many times those darkwraiths come and try to murder us......we just keep going. We all found a reason to keep going, and we won. So many things we could have fought for.... For Solaire and his sun, for Siegemeyer and his daughter, for my fair lady. In memory of Oscar, or perhaps Kirk, for the honor of artorias. Perhaps personal gain, or maybe just a love for battle. Perhaps you have your own reason,known in the history of your character. Or perhaps you are like Oscar would have been....seeking a purpose. No matter what we fought for, we all came to the same ending....a duel with the god of light. Truly a memorable experience, one that shall stick with all of us for the rest of our lives....

Can't believe this was published on my birthday... I understand that probably means nothing at all, but for me, it makes the music all the more impactful. My character gave his soul to the flame, to continue what Gwyn began and also what Vendrick failed to do. Great work Alex and best of the luck for the future :P

Some people make some weird unrelated stories, but here is how I see this song personally:
Remember that at the end, **cannonically** the chosen undead links the fire? Well, I'm pretty sure there was nobody to see CU to do it, so obviously no one could actually tell who continued the age of fire, apart from Frank, yet it's unknown if he will tell others about our feat or not. Well, this song represents if people would actually know about chosen undead's feats, turning the player into a legendary hero, getting him a **name**, maybe from personal notes and stuff, survivors who used to talk the chosen undead and etc, and then they find out that it was a low-rank city guard (for me, canonical class is knight, ok?).

It was finally done. My journey had reached its end as the knight whom represented those who came before, collapsed and thrust it's coiled blade into the ground before sinking into the ash. Exhausted, I fell to my knees. There was no sense of triumph, no rush of victory...I was tired. Clutching my blade, i pushed myself to my feet and limped towards the flame. I reached my hand out, and the flame leapt into my palm. I gazed upon the flickering little flame for a moment, and then closed my hand. The small ribbons of flame flickered between my fingers. Slowly, the world around me grew dimmer alongside the flames. As the light faded, I recalled my journey. The people I met, the places i saw. I smiled faintly to myself as i reflected on my journey. I sighed before suddenly feeling something against my chest. Reaching under my armor, i pulled it out and saw it was a locket. I was confused as to where I had picked it up. And then i remembered, I had always had it. I opened it and inside were two small portraits, one was of my face, and the other of a woman whose face seemed familiar, and yet completely strange. Beneath each portrait was a name, though it was too dark now to read. The flame in my other hand was now barely an ember. I realized I was cold, and my body was numb. As the ember grew cold, and finally, at long last, the light faded. As the tears rolled down my face, and my eyes grew to heavy to stay open, I smiled and whispered to myself, at the very moment that total darkness had consumed the world, "I had a name..." and then...there was nothing.
Farewell slayer of demons, chosen undead, bearer of the curse, ashen one, and good hunter. You have given me a wonderful time, and experience. even though it wasn't easy some times, you made the impossible possible. You wil never be forgotten to me.

This game's greatest evil is that moment when you defeat Gwyn and realize that all of your pain was for nothing. All linking the first fire does is banish the dark for a little bit longer, and becoming the Dark Lord only ensures that the downfall of Lordran will come even more swiftly. You stand and fight against all of the odds, only to reach the finish line and realize there's no crock of gold, no princess, no satisfaction- only the ever patient embrace of the darkest night waiting to take you back.
That is what live is. A fight to keep the darkness at bay for as long as possible. It's a battle we will definitely lose one day, but we fight on regardless. Better to live on your feet than die on your knees.

And at that moment I took a deep breath, my comrades, my friends and everyone that I ever cared for put their dying hopes and wishes on me. As I remembered them all, I took a step forward, then another and another until I was in a full sprint to the kiln of the first flame. The foes were tough but I had the burning will to keep going and defeat gwyn. So I made my way to the fog gate, a sense of achievement hit me and at that moment I stepped through to complete the dying wishes of my comrades and myself. As I ran to gwyn, I shouted "I will defeat you and link the fire!"
My take while listening to this beauty lolz.
"Ahh, thats where the book ends traveler," the old lady said "Now would you kindly take this and put it back on the shelves". As the traveler took hold of the book a small piece of paper fell from it. It looked scorched but not badly, as the traveler bent over the to pick up the paper, he flipped it over and saw a few words.
"Remember this, I had a name..." The traveler said outloud. The old lady looked at him a bit surprised.
"Oh my, so that heroic fool left something to remember him by..." She said while looking down and smiling "You know what traveler, keep that book. It'll be more of use to you, the wheels of time are turning again". With that, the young traveler left the old lady's house and set way for his journey.

anthony Hernandez My character, after realizing the fight was futile and the curse remains unbroken, would go on a reckless rampage. At the end of this rampage, I imagine him finally being hollow. Finally breaking down. He would give his predecessor the hardest fight of his/her life, despite being a shadow of his former self. In his dying moments, he would crash to his knees, tears in his eyes, and would remember what he fought for. He would lift his sword above his head, and stab it viscously into the ground before fading away. As his predecessor approached the blade, he/she would notice a chain necklace wrapped around the hilt, a locket with pictures of loved ones long forgotten concealed within. Roughly etched onto the hilt would be an equivalent of brail on one side, and on the other would be the translation. "I had name!", with power and rage flowing through the letters, ready to lash out at all in the world that had devoured his hope. And then it would sink in... that he had been blind.

I'm going to listen to this right before I slide in Dark Souls 2.
Every time I listen to this song I think of every moment that was special to me through this series. I think about my first playthrough, I think about delving into the lore for the first time, I remember the frustration and the joy that came with it all. I listen to this song and it helps me reflect on everything this game, this franchise has done for me, how much it's affected my life and the hand it played in shaping me to be the person I am today.
I can say with absolute certainty that this series has had one of if not the greatest impact on my life over any other piece of media and I will always be grateful for the journeys it took me on, for the stories it told me, and all the joy it's gifted me. A solemn and heartfelt thank you to Dark Souls, and to you Alex, for making such wonderful....absolutely outstanding and inspirational music. May you all have an amazing and spectacular day and may you ever find plenty of reasons to smile.
I consider my dark souls character to have a story...
My first that resided in dark souls 1, a knight fighting for what he considered to be just without any real understanding of the world but as his story continued he learnt and grew stronger. The adversary's he faced crumbled one by one until he stood before the ashen lord of cinders and parried him to the ground. Finally everything was over however he woke up back in the asylum on a repeat of the original journey, I considered him hollow at ng+3 when I finally died to ornstein and smough with 99 humanity which I intended to use to max rank with the dark wraith covenant. A pure knight that in the end was forced to seek power until he couldn't acquire anymore and perished.
My dark souls 3 character, A brute that had tried to help many NPC's but never succeeded in helping a single one to the end of their questline. He had missed siegmayer in the well, failed to find Anri in the catacombs and did not piece together the implications of giving a blind girl a book of sinister magic. He was a club wielder whom donned the armour of black iron tarkus and much like tarkus had attempted to help his people only to fail. He hollowed upon his only success, defeating geal and giving the paint to the little girl. I like the image that he still sits in the painters room, protecting her from any one that still wished to harm her.
My bloodborne character, An odd man that lives an unsatisfied life. Upon entering Yharnam he found purpose and dedicated his body and soul to uprooting every secret it held, slaughtering every beast and overcoming every countless hardship. His story is still continuing and while his holy Ludwig sword has been coated in the blood of almost every hunter and beast some still escape his grasp, however they can't hide forever and one day he shall allow himself to fall to the moon presences enticement and become the hunter's guide in the dream. Perhaps he hopes that someday a hunter like himself will show up and return to him the excitement he felt when fighting Ludwig, Gherman, Gascogine, The Oprhan of Kos and so many other combatants.
Maybe one day I'll return to all these characters and help them finish their quests, I could help the knight back on his path and gather more humanity but offer it instead to the chaos spider so that solaire may be saved, I could help the brute and with this new knowledge save everyone from the demise that they faced, and perhaps the odd man might unravel the entirety of his world and be finally satisfied.

Truly such a beautiful remix, it has such a hopeful feeling to it then the actual ending of Dark souls one, it's truly a song which fills you with a sense of completion, i mean honestly just imagine ending the game off with this after the ending scene,it would give a hopeful feeling to you, whether you linked or abandoned the flame,the future seemed bright whether it was through sacrifice or retaliation to a fate you wanted to deny,this song gives off all of those emotions at once, a huge sense of completion at a game that if you're a first timer or a hardened veteran fills you with satisfaction for the trials you faced, and in the end you'll be remembered throughout the ages as a single name, the name you chose and the meaning that names gives as well, the name of the chosen undead who defeated the great lord gwyn and rekindled /abandoned the flame.truly a great remix

I was a great man in my time, a light for the lost and a flame for those who wandered in darkness. And yet I always found myself alone in the end. No matter how many times I had aided my brethren or how many times they aided me, in the end only I was left there, standing in the ashes.
I was always doomed to face that which seemed insurmountable. But I always triumphed, no matter how many times I died. It was only after everyone had forgotten who I once was that I realised: I shared their fate. I was once who thou art now. But I was destined to become them.
And so it is that thou shalt now bear my burden. To forever be lost to the fire, to be forgotten. No one will remember thy name just as no one remembers mine.
