- A kungfu guy that stays with his kungfu combos the whole entire three rounds! His opponent might actually be Muay Chaiya (so more Muay Boran than Muay Thai), so keep that in mind if he doesn't move exactly like a Muay Thai standard. Let us know who you think won and also what style of kungfu you think this guy named Dragon does. Commentating with Jerry is Brantley. Stay tuned for after the match for in-depth analysis and also more about Brantley's gig.

What style do you think this kungfu guy is doing?
Hey man I got some footage of me a karate brown belt sparring a muay thai guy and a pro MMA fighter I would love for you to review them I will gladly send you the footage
Choy li fut mixed with wing chun is what it looks like to me
Its Wing Chun
Derp style
The king fu guy really leveled up a bit.
Those strikes look like Choy Lay Fut or some other southern style.
yeah, i train and incorporate a similar swing punch like that into my mixed MT training based on my basic kung fu training mostly from wing chun and animal styles...
I was thinking the same thing although I've never trained in it I have seen people who do and they do similar things in sparring and drilling
Are you a break dancer ?
I can do some moves but I got my own style. What about you u pure break dance or u do popin too etc?
@@user-ht1jg4qz3h Same here, except with Shaolin and a bit of Sanda. It works surprisingly well! I also find that I'm able to bait strikes and land counterattacks pretty consistently by briefly switching to a Shaolin stance after an exchange. I've landed a lot of sneaky backfists and side kicks that way.
If half these kung fu practitioners would simply cover or retreat after their attack it would be a 100 percent improvement. No lack of aggression in this bout.
This looks like a very decent kung fu practitioner vs day 3 muay thai trial guys.
What a name Kung Fu guy have!
Neither of them seem to have "stopping power"
Both guys were sloppy but Muay Thai guy was more consistent and landed more strikes especially to the leg. The decision was correct
Now that you've mentioned the leg kicks, it makes a ton more sense!
This. The Thais score points for significant leg kicks and MT guy realized he could just spam leg kicks and KF guy wasn’t gonna check a single one(if he even knew to). MT wasn’t throwing them with a ton of heat, but he was landing at will. He did eat a couple punches doing that, but often only after KF was already off balanced/staggering from the kick. Also KFs generally poor balance and tendency to stagger like a drunken sailor may have helped some of those marginal kicks to score when they probably shouldn’t have. That last bit is definitely a scoring bias against KF, but you really don’t want to let MT judges think you’re struggling to not hit the canvas.
@@b_t_s8792He checked most of them to be fair.
Soooo many of them were checked, and they were not displacing the opponent, which is how a significant strike is determined in MT/KB judging. Kung Fu guy did waaay more total damage, early on at least. Shockingly.
@@douglasmacneil4474 no they were not checked. KF guy had success early on then he started taking leg kicks and could no longer move the same way he did. KF guy took more damage overall and lost convincingly. Both guys are amateur level at best
I think that more of a muay chai or muay something. Look at his hand. At1:18, he is doing something like muay boran.
I saw same thing - the lifted leg extended check into stance switch that you see in Muay Boran demos. Could this be Thailand’s answer to China’s traditional arts training with lack of aliveness?
You're absolutely right. I especially saw it with the way he kicks at 1:25 and 1:28 as he is using his whole body as one unit instead of a separate baseball bat, if I'm explaining it correctly.
Muay Chaiya....😁
So, the thing that makes this strike work, is just like any other strike. We dont often see these types of kung fu arm strikes work. But thats not because the techniques are inferior. Its because the kung fu practitioners are inferior to other arts, for historical reasons I wont get into in this comment.
The moves themselves work just fine, if done by: someone 1. in shape, 2. willing to fight, get hurt and hurt back, and 3. who has a level of understanding of the intangibles of fighting (timing, rhythm, gameplan etc.) on par with their opponent. Check all those boxes and the strike works, just like any other.
Most Kung Fu fighters dont check those boxes. But, they would do just as bad doing Muay Thai. Just like people who learn Muay Thai on RUclips and challenge their local kickboxing/mma gym, and get beat up. Its because they dont check the boxes.
The technique itself has things going for it:
1. The timing for it is unfamiliar, making people jump the gun, or miss the bus, when defending
2. The whole attack, from setup, to launch, to impact, to reset, to the recovery from getting hit (regaining balance, sense of position, target focus etc) is unfamiliar. If thrown by a "Box checker" often most people wouldnt know the attack was about to be thrown because preattack indicators are different. distance, setup angles etc.
3. The attack is harder to recover from because its pretty disruptive because this hand strike is "sticky". it lands, and drags as it follows its impact path, disrupting the vertical axis and disorientating the person who is hit.
4. When done right, the attack puts the attacker in positions where it is difficult for the defender to retaliate from, or do so effectively.
So, the technique has some pretty good advantages.
THe reason these kung fu strikes get a bad rap besides the practitioners being bad, is...
These strikes cant be effectively utilized in the framework of common striking styles like karate, tkd, and muay thai. All those styles have enough similarities that they could use eachothers techniques and fit them in their own frameworks.
but not this technique. not kung fu techniques.
Lethwei could use these techniques, because the systems framework are similar enough that there is sufficient overlap for Lethwei fighters to make it work. Heck, Dave Leduc, a Lethwei GOAT, actually got his start in kung fu.
This is probably too wordy now, so ill cut it there. I hope i was able to make all that into something comprehensible. I had to cut a lot of corners and leave a lot out.
Naksu is a small Thai MMA promotion.
Are they still going?
@@FightCommentary I think they folded around 12 years ago. It seems to be around the time MMA was banned in Thailand.
I dont know why, but watching the fight whike hearing your covnversation was really chill, I liked it
Awesome! We’ll have more like this!
That's Muay Thai? No way.
The Kung Fu guy stance is Qi gong.
Explain more!
Big Hoops sounds interesting
Awesome display
This is an interesting format. It does appear there are no knees/elbows, which i would like to see some more of, especially in a clench or in closer contact.
I would also say it was interesting to see the kung fu guy slowing down as the match went on. He started out with much more tenacity but faded as the match continued.
Great commentary
Jerry what is your full martial arts background?
Is that the neighbour with the sexy time noises keeping you awake all night? Bro sounds well rested! Kung fu guy did well but it seemed liked muay thai guy landed whenever he wanted to.
In Choy Lay Fut we call that swinging uppercut 'pao choy'.
Loving the contest Jerry. Thank you!,
Kung Fu can work, but combat sports is more than technique. Its also about stamina, energy management, composure, collecting data, making adjustments, strategy.
The KF guy did not have stamina, did not conserve energy, he does a lot of wasted movement and hitting air, at some point he was just swinging for the fences.
Muay Thai guy was shocked at first, but he kept composure, read his opponent, adjusted, and once he figured things out, he stuck to a strategy - let the other guy get tired.
The KF is talented for sure. Most KF guys would not have lasted, let alone actually pull off the KF in an effective manner. Talent, technique, and non-resistance training can only take you so far.
Iv done martial arts for 27 years
I live in the uk 🇬🇧
The level of skill in martial arts here.
Is very high.
Our kung fu karate guys etc
R all formidable
Karate in europe isnt a joke
Neither is
Light contact fighting
I see thesw videos
And a lot of pegave not been taught conditioning
Kung fu used ti be based in conditioning
Horse stance for a start
Develps stamina
Hours of kicking drills
Hours of punching drills
To develop stamina
At novice level
And ovee time step it up asding running etc
Thats standard training at wushu academys
The word wushu neans
martial arts
Muay thai teaches conditioning
But modern
Muay thai isnt that good
Muay thai is an umbrella term
Its ten
different styles
to be learned
individually
To then put together to
bcome a style for the
individual
person
Choylifut.
That was intriguing.
I think the main style of the kung fu guy is probably "tong bei quan" Let me show you my analysis. Firstly, his main attakcs that connected were usually a flurry of "hay makers" as most ppl would probaly call it. Tong bei quan's main attacking technique/concept is loading up the arm and twisting the body to get the momentum to strike, often utilizing the full length of the arm to be relaxed like a swing, to build up momentum and acceleration. This kungfu guy's techique may use less of the full twisting of the body to conceal the attack a bit more, but you can still see his roots. 0:13 is an example of this "loading" seen in tong bei. 5:16 and 5:21 -5:25 are also instances where the exxaggerated attack of tongbei quan can be seen. The stance of this guy, with one arm forward is also seen in tong bei quan.
lemme give some references
ruclips.net/user/shorts64p6F9hftpw this short is a quick form, where you can see the stance at the front and end of the form, which is also the main "guard" this kungfu guy had in this match.
ruclips.net/user/shortsTvNgeLt3jnk this short gives a really good example, to show you the attack style of tong bei quan, which is very similar to this kungfu guy.
also the shuffling/footwork of this kungfu guy also has similaries with tong bei quan, which you can see in the first short.
Overall, this is my analysis and opinions, although not very deep, but this is all just assumptions and speculations, I could most defintley be wrong, but this is just what i see from this match.
Very interesting!
I found another style vs style organization and the vid ima send you the guy fights like ryu from streetfighter
Sure thing! Looking forward to it!
"His hands are low":

Nicolino Locche would sometimes box with both arms behind his back and sticking his face out to invite punches. But he is called The Untouchable for a reason.
Please note that all your examples are cream of the crop athletes. His point is that average joes shouldn't do it, and he's right.
Unless your job is fighting, 9/10 times you do not train enough for hands down to be viable.
They don’t swing wild and hop and get off balance and suck at fighting
It’s better practice to have lower hands in MMA - the distances are longer and shoots and wrestling in general necessitate it. The closer fighters are to each other and the more restricted the fighting, the more hands should be up. That’s why boxers fight with hands high (even if they lower the front hand they keep the shoulder high), versus kickboxing which is lower and then your MMA examples above which are lower again
@pyrosish as much as your argument is reasonable, these are clearly both strikers. Neither martial art is focused on takedowns, so the lower hands/wider stance mma meta should not be followed here.
I live in thailand...yes they are that biased, muay thai is national pride , you would have to almost kill the muay thai guy and even then you would just be seen as a brutal thug villian...you can't win lol.
I thought it looked like either choy Lee fut or hung gar. Choy Lee fut and dong taijiquan are both respected here because 90 years or so ago boxers from those styles came here and actually defeated muay thai boxers in public matches.
very rarely do I see a "Kung Fu" practitioner do well in a match or sparring against another art, usually see them get beaten down. Even personally as well, I saw wing chun practitioners sparring some boxers in an old gym I used to go to and they just end up abandoning all the wing chun practices and end up brawling. Tho the Kung fu guy doesn't look really good with his stance and movement he is doing far better than I thought
That Muay thai was nowhere near good though.
@@rmwilliams8193 I know but usually even muai thai of that caliber still beats the shit out of kungfu people lol
446 muay thai dude could have KNOCKED out Mr. Spinny
"Kung Fu" really is viable in combat.. Most don't do it correctly.. Even this could have been better.. Even JKD could go a long way if they utilized core basic strategy of getting side position advantage but most break form before they even do that.. All most likely due to little sparring
Mhmm. I think repetition is necessary -- funnily enough, the wax-on and wax-off style training would help a lot with reflex, and more really need to do more muk yan jong practice to improve resistance and striking efficiency and then pair that up with more full-contact sparring. I think the biggest drawback to a lot of kung fu practitioners is lack of stiffness training or hardening of the limbs, lack of muk yan jong training, and lack of full-contact sparring. I would like to see someone who has done that kind of training do more serious full-contact MMA competitions.
@@Billy-bc8pk Full contact sparring would be the game changer.. Most these guys never learned to maintain composure during heat of the moment.. Hence why their entire form collapses into survival mode
Looks more like the equivalent of a Muay Thai white belt vs a Kungfu Master
very funny about Kungfu Master. Don Wilson is a black belt in the Pai Lum Kungfu White Dragon Style martial art and he is not a master but a Northern Shaolin martial arts fighter. did you know that he beat 3 muaythai fighters according to MT rules, he even laughed when he found out that new muaythai fighters were only able to fight 5 rounds, whereas in Pai Lum Kungfu he usually sparred for 12 rounds. don't be too proud of MT. Don Wilson, Paul Vizzio, Andy Hug in their time have taught how shame is received when slaughtered in muaythai's own rules
Muay Chaiya fighter looks like Tae, student of Kru Lek (so either this is an old video or i could be TOTALLY wrong about who that is because from what I remember of Tae from years ago he was quite good). The "kung fu" guy doesnt look like any specific style of kung fu but maybe a mix of taekwondo with some basic kung fu. Your remarks on "this is how i expect kung fu guys to fight, thats how i used to fight when i did kung fu", shows how low level training you got/ or low level your understanding is of legit kung fu.
What’s Tae’s full name?
Dunno
Don't know his full name but most people know him in the name of tae baan chang thai@@FightCommentary
The style looks to be Choy lee fut. Kungfu man didn't gas. The bout to me was a draw or he won depending on how much they count leg kicks.
Wing Chun Stance. Choy Lee Fut the rest.
Not bad👍
I thought it was a draw...
Kung fu guy got a lot of damage. Kicks on the thighs, punches on the face. Win definitely goes to muay Thai. It's not homecourt advantage. He's just hit more by the muay Thai fighter.
yeah tha MT guy was pretty lousy...🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
He looks like he's just starting out, he doesn't belong in a ring.
his kicks are okay, he never uses teep for some reason, and his punches seem very beginnerish
The first round wasn't that great, but he picked it up after..
for me muay thai won bec he destroyed his legs and had more powerful shots plus that kung fu his hands are so low and he swings
"Kung Fu" really is viable in combat.. Most don't do it correctly.. Eveb tgis could have been better
he doesn't look like muai thai fighter ...no head kicks , no elbows and knees
Kungfu guy threw 1 knee, while the muaythai guy threw none when he had so many opportunities to..😑
Muay Thai guy He definitely won the second and third rounds. The first round is from the Kung fu guy. I think it illustrates how traditional Kung fu makes no sense in a sporting context. the effectiveness of Kung fu is expressed in a limited time of combat. in the video you can clearly see how, after this time, the Kung fu boy no longer has the energy to fight over multiple rounds
kung fu guys hands are down XD
I trust your words but I don't understand how it can be that he is practising kung fu, he is so ungainly. I can imagine seeing his moves, a mix of wing chun, from the hands to the steps he does, a bit of Siu-Lam's snake style, maybe a bit of Choy Li Fut, but maybe only because he throws his arms without precision
That MT guy is God awful. Not really a fair comparison.
Is that Muay Thai? Where are the knees and elbows?
Kung fu won🎉
the muay thai guy is not a muay thai guy…
Muay Thai guy's defense needs work. He seemed unable to deal with the big sloppy swinging punches from Kung Fu guy.
How is this a Muay Thai guy😂
😂😂😂😂😂 this mt boxer looks like beginner.
Kung fu guy high on coke
where this is muay thai? wtf!!!
this Thai man (Muay_MMA) said,
@Muay_MMA
Come on Thai fan, mention more muay thai, 3 are not enough xD
Heheheh rekt!, I get more posts and it pisses you off more, so you rage quit,
That's really bad Muay Thai.
very amateur muay thai fighter
Too bad the MT guy was ass
That was the worst demonstration of Muay Thai I've ever seen 😑.
Kungfu guy made his opponent to really work hard to win.
Some kungfu techniques has anti muay thai moves which completely counters muay thai
