There's something truly wholesome about watching 2 masters competing with honor, dignity and respect to their fullest potential. Its the stuff long lasting love and friendships are made of.
I remember as young boys, we only made friends with people we've fought before, those were guys you could trust to stand with you. That was with fists or stick fighting before people decided to stab or shoot their opponent in a fight.
He respects this master, so when the master can't see, he puts on the blindfold to be fair. But later on when he fights the evil general, he doesn't have to play fair, so he doesn't do the same thing.
After watching every martial arts movie, my elder and I would tie pillows around our chests and reenact the fighting scenes we have witnessed. Love those years 😍

I wonder, too, if any of it was an old master imparting a lesson to a gifted student, a little "hey, slow down a bit, don't rush into a fight so blindly". The dialogue post-fight shows Kurata's character's wisdom and understanding of hand-to-hand combat, as well as his great respect for Chen Zhen and his master, it gave a lot more depth to the fight itself.
This is a pretty cool movie that showcase the hate of Japanese and Chinese against each other, while having Li being the one caught in between : having a Japanese wife, being exiled by his own dojo and the community. There are good and bad characters from both sides, blind hatred just breed more destruction and tragedy.

Just an my opinion It's the one of the top of the greatest martial arts movies ever made. Yuen Woo Ping is the genius of martial arts cinematography! Greetings from USSR
It's Karate vs mixed styles of Kung Fu, all these throws are in Karate as well as Aiki-Jiujitsu. At some point especially when they're blindfolded it looks like Wing Chun elements in both of them. But there's a lot of blocks that are similar in Karate.
@helioshyperion8077 Jet Li never learned Wing Chun so definitely not. He's playing to his strengths which are changquan or "long fist" and fanziquan which is "lightning fist". The second one in particular suits Jet Li especially considering he is blindingly fast. I learned wushu myself so the number of different kicks he is pulling off is no surprise either. The sheer number of different kicks you have to learn in wushu is nuts
This is amazing! The symbolic and spiritual dance of different forms, fights moves & blending of different energy is amazing! One is closed fist, the other is open, one strikes the feet, the other chokes the neck, one is young & blue, the other is green/brown & old! It's just beautiful! Imagine the practice it took to create this scene and choreograph it and build the chemistry, the shots, the takes, the editing & who came up with the idea!! WOW!
I have been a fan of Yasuaki Kurata since the mid 70s when he usually played the bad guys, most memorable against Chen Sing in many Hong Kong films like "Kung Fu, the Invincible Fist" and "Rage of Wind".
This is such a great scene. The martial arts is of course, not entirely realistic, but it doesn't matter because the STORYTELLING in the fight is so great.
I mean realism has never been the point of Kung Fu movies. It's the fakest shit out there. But it looks amazing. Realistic fights are usually comparatively boring
But to be able to work at that speed and still let the view keep up is what’s most impressive. Martials artists normaly need to learn to slow down for film but these guys speed up instead and make it work
@@jonahblock Yes of course, martial arts choreography stunt work is a skill by itself. Even though the fight isn’t meant to be realistic, it should still try to tell a realistic story in the reactions, actions and emotions of the fighters..
1:54 Translation is inaccurate. He actually said "As long as it can win it is good fighting style". This is closely related to a later conversation which Master Funakoshi told him that martial art is not all about taking down your opponent. It is more about self perfection.
The most interesting fact about this movie is that the story of this movie took place after the story in Fearless. Nice how Jet Li get to portray not only Huo Yuanjia but also his student Chen Zhen as well.
@@alfa-psi The other reason is that him and his family were vacationing in Indonesia on Boxing Day in 2004, they were there when the Tsunami struck and they all barely survived. He said that after that day he was trying to focus more on his time with family. He took on two years at a time to make movies and the rest of the info you mentioned and others was what made him start lowering his action movie days more. I believe that unlike Jackie Chan who purposely used to risk his life for stunts (respectfully appreciated as it were) Jet Li was met with the fact of dying unpredictably or his loved ones by nature itself. When one is risking one's life, I think in difference that untimely death accidentally or not does bring many thoughts on how we spend our time alive.
This is my first time seeing this and I won't lie, the first few moves of the fight kind of sucked. To many cuts and it felt like the fighters weren't even in the same place, just stitched together, but after a bumpy start it really takes off! Absolutely thrilling and managed to tell a lot about who these characters are just from the way they conduct themselves throughout! Thank you for sharing this piece of cinema!
My favorite martial arts movie ever honestly. There are ones better stories and more epic battles, but something about this has always stuck with me. It was the first "Jet Li" movie I ever watched specifically because he was in it. That part where he kicks the hay into the guy and he wigs out attacking the hell out of it has always made me laugh out loud, obviously intentional to lessen the tension and its perfect because it doesnt last long and it something youd actually do to disguise your movement.
And the part where they both hit each other on the head and almost mimic the rubbing of their hands on their head with the same expression on their faces.😂
@@jermainewright2556 agreed. I wasn't commenting on who was better between the two, they are both amazing. My point was compared to other big cinema stars, Jet Li was a proper martial artist.
@@MrJspecefini agreed. No one is saying that Jet li is the only one, there are others Sammo Hung is also a pretty decent fighter, so is Donnie yen. I would personally class Jackie Chan + Yuen Biao as very elegant dancers/acrobats/martial artists. Jet li has won Wuxia championship titles in the real world. Bruce lee is of course a legendary martial artist of many forms and a teacher too.
Also I wonder what Donnie thought about this movie. He was YWP's prodigy for a decade, but Jet is the star here, and it's probably no coincidence he did his Fist of Fury series the year after this.
I just finished reading Bey Logan's "Hong Kong Action Cinema" book which only goes up to 1996 and he basically named Donnie Yen as Yuen Woo-Pong's protege. Given Yen's more obvious Bruce Lee influence, I think in retrospect he would've made a lot more sense as the first pick for Chen Zhen. The only reason why he wouldn't is likely due to him not being nearly as popular and marketable as Jet Li who had climbed his way to the top of the Hong Kong hierarchy of martial arts movie figures after the massive success of the Once Upon a Time in China series.
@@DanteTW1 I guess it remains to be seen. He had a different type of intensity in his screen presence at the time. His Chen Zhen would've probably been more like the traditional Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury. Channeling the hot-headed youth archetype like in the Tiger Cage series and In The Line of Duty 4. Jet Li's almost the opposite character; silent and stoic with a more contained fury.
In his Fist of fury tv series' commentary on the 2002-3 dvd release, he talks about how he doesn't think Jet Li portrays Bruce Lee but rather more of a hero which he is often type casted as. He also said he understands he gets flake for it and that he also tries his best to imitate Bruce but can't copy everything.
This is by far one of my favorite all time fight scenes in any martial art movie. Just brings back all kinds of memories, I was 9 when this came out. I remember seeing this and thinking how absolutely awesome it was to watch two masters fight like it was a game of chess and be really honorable about it
Such a crazy fight scene, and really creative choreography. Granted, I always hated the SLIGHTLY overcranked cam speeds in Jet Li's films. I mean 6-12% is fine--great, even. But once it starts hitting 16%, it's just too bloody much. THEY'RE ALREADY FAST. They don't need to be impossible to see or follow. 😕 That's the opposite of awesome storytelling, lol.
@@zetareticulan321 should watch the legend of a fighter, it tells story about young huo yun jia, way before fearless timeline. also young yasuaki kurata is on the movie as well
Thanks. I'm not sure why they couldn't have just re-sounded the original Cantonese and keep the original voices. But if I were to use Adobe Premiere or more sophisticated editing software, this combination probably would've synced better....maybe I should send this to distributors and convince them to release a better hybrid audio version haha
One of the primary reasons this fight stands out is because they are both respectful opponents. You can see by Chen Zhen's initial defensive moves against the Jap(anese) fighter that he is completely taken aback at the sheer ferocity and the efficiency in the karate techniques employed. Till this moment, Chen Zhen has very rarely encountered a karateka of this level. This fight thus helps him indirectly prepare for the final duel by giving him an idea of what to expect from the evil military officer antagonist. The Jap fighter, despite his experience dealing with Chinese kung-fu in the past, is nonetheless impressed by Chen Zhen's natural affinity for the martial art. They thus part ways amicably, with the older man giving his blessings to the couple - something even Chen Zhen's own (adoptive) Chinese family refused to do when they learned of his relationship with his Japanese gf.
The whole story of Chen Zhen was always about how he's let down by his own peers, like in Bruce Lee version he defends them and they get mad at him because Japanese will be back but more angry... They refuse to stand up to bullies. In the end, we know Japan list the war and Chinese government lost the following civil war to russia backed communists, being colonized by other foreign ideology instead.
There's something truly wholesome about watching 2 masters competing with honor, dignity and respect to their fullest potential. Its the stuff long lasting love and friendships are made of.

The battles throughout the film gave depth to the characters without much dialogue having to be said.
And the part where they both hit each other on the head and almost mimic the rubbing of their hands on their head with the same expression on their faces.😂
The story is actually a remake of Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury (loosely based on real story), and fight choreography is still unmatched.
3:33 This is honorable...Nobody fights with honor anymore
You're right. The damned Democrats have destroyed any sense of honor and respect. This scene is refreshing in these days.
True that!
Couldn't stop smiling from start to finish. My jaws ache.
Same🤷🏻♂️
前几天地方电视台播放了《太极张三丰》,真的太激动了,40多岁的人热泪盈眶,时间会证明李连杰是一位伟大的电影艺术家!
I bought almost every one of Jet Li movie. Fist of Legends, Twin Warriors, and Red Dragon are 3 of my tops Jet Li movies.
Black Mask is up there too
What the hell did I just watch!!?!! This was amazing!!!!
One of the best fights on film, soo many lessons taught through this movie.
This movie is something special. Which is rare for a remake. Got this and iron monkey at the same dvd kiosk in kings plaza in like 94 or 95.
Jet li is a real martial artist and it shows.
@@jermainewright2556 agreed. I wasn't commenting on who was better between the two, they are both amazing. My point was compared to other big cinema stars, Jet Li was a proper martial artist.
jackie chan was no joke too.
Bruce Lee anyone?
@@MrJspecefini agreed. No one is saying that Jet li is the only one, there are others Sammo Hung is also a pretty decent fighter, so is Donnie yen. I would personally class Jackie Chan + Yuen Biao as very elegant dancers/acrobats/martial artists. Jet li has won Wuxia championship titles in the real world. Bruce lee is of course a legendary martial artist of many forms and a teacher too.
Would still be outclassed by an amateur boxer.
Thumbnail looks like a video game! 👍
Amazing fight!!!❤❤❤
The older fighter is the demonstration of "I'm fighting because I have to, not because I want to." Now that I'm older I can feel that sentiment.
こんなに動ける俳優さん知らなかった!撮り方も特撮風だったけどカッコ良かったw
これは確か、日本と香港の合作映画だった気がする。
I've been always fascinated by this sensei haircut 💂♂
Never thought about it like that
I personally feel that Donnie wouldn’t have had the charisma to pull it off, that’s me personally
I remember seeing this and thinking how absolutely awesome it was to watch two masters fight like it was a game of chess and be really honorable about it
2:33 the whole fight leads to be the best potato crisps commercial
one of the best fights ever made by two great artists. It's really exciting and thrilling just to watch.
You just have to love these fight scenes, even if they are so rediciolous it's basically comedy😁
Hater stop comment. Go watch spongebob that's suitable for you
Better than superman, spiderman fake fight used CGI
I used to watch these Jet Li films when I was a kid with my father. Those were good days. Great scene.
😕 That's the opposite of awesome storytelling, lol.
luckily you can play it on 75% speed here at RUclips
Wahoo
This is amazing!
I love that Jet Li plays Chen Zhen (fictional) and Huo Yuanjia (a real person), his teacher.
Think of Fearless as the prequel to this movie. 😆
@@zetareticulan321 should watch the legend of a fighter, it tells story about young huo yun jia, way before fearless timeline. also young yasuaki kurata is on the movie as well
you can tell these two legends had a lot of fun filming this scene
Feel bad for Jet-Li having hyperthyroidism.
Ah brilliant! It’s in Cantonese 😊
Yeah that sounds way better. Nice one. You should send it to the distributor and see if they'll pay you to mix the whole film.
Thanks. I'm not sure why they couldn't have just re-sounded the original Cantonese and keep the original voices. But if I were to use Adobe Premiere or more sophisticated editing software, this combination probably would've synced better....maybe I should send this to distributors and convince them to release a better hybrid audio version haha
I like that this fight isn’t about killing each other or even hurting one another seriously.
GÉNIAL !!!!😲Qu’est-ce que j’ai apprécié cette scène,grande classe et humour sont au rendez-vous de cette version revisitée 👏👏👏
How are you doing
Jet Li was always my favorite action star. His speed was ridiculous
4:23 I think this throw-combo is my favorite part of the fight. Just a cool technique.
They definitely went to a urban barbershop 😂 love the hairstyle 💯💯💯💯
你說得很有道理,你很有智慧,你思考很深入,你動了你的腦筋
Incredible. Two martial arts masters in real life doing the dance! One of my favorite films of all time.
This scenes was the iconic and it's very famous
one of my favourite scenes a lot went into it, the wind the music everything
