#1 Kettlebell Swing Mistake You'll See In The Gym

  • Being nomadic, I've been to gyms across the US as well as internationally from Medellín, Colombia to Bengaluru, India
Benji and I are always super pleased when we see kettlebells in these gyms. The number one move we see messed up, likely because it's the most common move, is the kettlebell swing. And it almost always boils down to understanding that a kettlebell swing is a hip hinge movement and that's where the explosiveness comes from.
Sometimes the bell the person is using is too light, which gives them the option of doing a front raise. You shouldn't be able to front raise the bell you're swinging with. It is a heavy*, *lower body movement, not an upper body move.
other times , it's clear that the "kettlebell hip hinge" is new to them. There are different types of hinges "squatty hinges", "hingey hinges" and then something that's just right....the kettlebell hinge where your shoulders are slightly above the hips, and hips above the knees. It takes some practice to find this, and to make sure the bell stays high up between the legs.
Usually one of these two things will fix up the form right away.
This is NOT to say people going to the gym don't know what they are doing. Kettlebells are a skill that come with practice and for most gym goers, they are just doing 1-2 moves, not using them their whole workout. Gym goers are some of the most passionate, self-driven, and fitness curious people out there.
As a kettlebell coach, if you happen upon my page, I hope that you can take away useful KB Tips that make you want to use kettlebells even more, that's why I share.

“You can let go of the bell”.
Did not know hardwood floor boards could flex that much.
