Don't take this the wrong way, but your calm voice knocks my puppy right into a nap so we started playing your videos to calm her. Also I love the content keep it up
LOL I actually thought I‘m the only one listening to his videos right before sleep. His voice hits a nerve it sounds so smoothly pronounced, thing is I‘m German and in addition it helps me improving my english. Chapeau.
Started a new playthrough after finally redownloading Oblivion on New Years. Doing an RP challenge that significantly reduced my money, so I spent multiple days in the Imperial City saving up to buy the Protect spell so I could start training Alteration. Set off towards Weynon Priory after I got it, ran into the Conjurer, and the spell tome he dropped was Protect.
In terms of the first microtransaction, MMOs has already started selling similar things before this came out. Which is probably how Microsoft got the idea when they suggested Bethesda start selling addons like this and the other ones for Oblivion.
I waited until a Christmas sale and got it half off, but I didn't think it was the worst thing ever, even back then. Now compared to today's standards, it's basically free dlc. 😂
Oh man, thank you for saying the player levels of the specific spell tome levels. (Currently doing a playthrough where I'm collecting all the spells, and this will really come in handy.)
@ABardsBallad I actually plan to collect a lot of things actually. Spells, Random Enchanted Items with Multiple Effects, Random Enchanted Items with unique effects, etc.
love you Bard !! you're voice is the top of the top its so smooth , no anything, its perfect ... the best of the best there's no one comes close to you
Like other people have said, Bethesda wasn't the first to the microtransaction game, having aped the concept from MMOs, though they were a very early adopter. But I think that's a crucial distinction. The idea would've spread through the industry and someone would've hit upon an idea like this sooner or later I think. Not that it makes it better, but I think it may have been inevitable. Whatever the case, this was clearly Bethesda testing the waters for how microtransactions would be implemented into a single player format. An ancestor to the Creation Club. On the other hand, the spell tomes expansion slots in so naturally that I didn't even realize it wasn't part of the base game until pretty late in my first playthrough. It's an old trope and obviously mages would hold onto spell books for easy reference, especially if they're dabbling in necromancy in the wilderness and aren't on speaking terms with the Mage's Guild.
Makes sense with the MMOs and Bethesda wanting to be the industry first! And I hear you on the tomes, I would’ve thought they were in the vanilla game too 😂
It was going to happen eventually. Also it wasn’t even a very long standing DLC and is just free in every GOTY edition of Oblivion now. The whole controversy is so overblown.
Joke is on us, few years later, companies would do this stuff on the regular. Now, for the horse armor dlc itself, it always felt kinda pointless, shadowmere is already immortal, besides, i never use horses anyway.
While funny, I never really felt that strongly about it. Something like the dlc insanity of dragon age origins seems more grimey to me. Like how the companion shale who was clearly designed to be in the game originally was instead included as a dlc code in new copies of the game in order to disuade people from purchasing a used copy/force those who did to then buy the dlc.
I hear you! Yeah I think because I wasn’t playing the game at the time, and can only look at it in hindsight, I don’t feel as strongly towards it either
The main reason people were upset with having to pay for it was, from my understanding, that the armor was supposed to exist in the base game from the start. If it had just been a free update, especially since it came out so close to the release date of the game, no one would have cared about it. It didn't help that Oblivion was chock full of so many fast travel points that using a horse wasn't even really needed. I know I never did, though I couldn't be bothered to play the game for long because I hated a ton of the gameplay design choices (which only got even worse in Skyrim).
@@CrobatmanIamthenight That game is worse when compared to 3. At least with The Sims 3 some of the stuff packs are useful apart from the Movie Stuff and Katie Perry's Sweet Treats Pack
Since playing on steam I probably encountered a special bug. Thanks to ur videos I‘m totally back in Cyrodiil and started a few character builds for specific walkthroughs as one character had a spell already loaded in my menu without fighting anybody a few hrs later exploring around the Imperial city I saw the corpse of that specific conjurer but he had no spell tome book in his inventory.
Well I never! I always bump into some random low-level tomes eve though I'm level 41 and I always assumed they are the same as spells you can buy, didn't know there are unique ones! Thanks!
For those of us that had played Morrowind - the plug ins we got for Morrowind were much better than what we had to pay for in Oblivion. Like Firemoth sucked, but the Bitter Coast upgrade was beautiful and Entertainers was cute. Much more in depth than horse armor. More evidence that horse armor was originally intended to be in the game is that there was originally a “Bit and Bridle” shop in the Imperial City. It was changed to be the Red Diamond jewelry shop, and there are minor glitches associated with this. The fact that the imperial city didn’t sell horses has stuck out from the beginning. In addition, the fact that none of the dialogue in the expansion is new is a bit of an insult - it’s essentially an asset flip with some dummied out content.
I remember when I discovered that my Knights of the Nine has aditional DLC's on DVD that refused to install. I was sitting on my PC 8 hours at night trying to install them. I was 12 then, next day I was in school snoring and drooling during class.
Great vid once again! Are you also going to do videos on the morrowind plugins? Some of them are great like firemoth and master index but some are just eh, i remember finding entertainers the most lackluster even next to horse armor
@ABardsBallad it gave higher level, questline-completed characters a reason to go venture into areas looking for good loot chests again. Even maybe a good challenge to try and unlock all spell tomes as a mage.
I mean if the first ever major microtransactions was like weapons/armor then it wouldn’t spark as much controversy but horse armor? Yeah it doesn’t add much value lol
Its funny I never bought it until recently for console. And only got the strongholds in the 2010s. Of course on steam you oblivion goty it comes with all of them.
The horse armor 🤦. If it was actually functional, at least it would be SOMETHING lmao. Absolute humbug it didnt give a health buft or something like that. The elven look nice though. But God lol
Don't take this the wrong way, but your calm voice knocks my puppy right into a nap so we started playing your videos to calm her. Also I love the content keep it up
Haha honestly that’s what I love to hear! Glad I can be of assistance friend!! 😂 cheers!!

😂 that’s fortunate and unfortunate at the same time 😂 the spell tomes can be quite random like that!
In terms of the first microtransaction, MMOs has already started selling similar things before this came out. Which is probably how Microsoft got the idea when they suggested Bethesda start selling addons like this and the other ones for Oblivion.
That makes sense I could totally see it!
I think it's funny that now people are mostly okay with an around $3 dlc like that, i honestly would have been whatever about it.
At the time, I probably would’ve bought into it no questions asked 😂
Apathy is death
I waited until a Christmas sale and got it half off, but I didn't think it was the worst thing ever, even back then.

So glad you uploaded again love your videos man
Cheers! I really appreciate the support! :)

Oh wow good luck with that one! 😂 I saw how many there were and immediately thought it might be a tough time to snag em all! Godspeed friend 🫡

Yeah, but this is extremely important that Oblivion was not an mmo. It is still beyont importance in making microttansactions a thing in SP games.
It was going to happen eventually. Also it wasn’t even a very long standing DLC and is just free in every GOTY edition of Oblivion now. The whole controversy is so overblown.
“At least it didn’t involve any IN GAME currency” I love the subtle clowning.
Joke is on us, few years later, companies would do this stuff on the regular.

Most anticipated video of 2025
😂😂 after all these years, the horse armor always wins
I remember my older brothers saving up to get horse armor after already saving up for months for the base game. good times, great video

Sounds like a Stuff pack in the Sims 3 where it only adds items and doesn't change the gameplay so much unless you like the items being offered
@@thrillvilled111 sims 4 you mean
@@CrobatmanIamthenight That game is worse when compared to 3. At least with The Sims 3 some of the stuff packs are useful apart from the Movie Stuff and Katie Perry's Sweet Treats Pack
Yeah that would make sense! Probably should’ve been a free update tbh lol
That's fair it should've been free or at least be combined with the Spell Tomes expansion then the price would've been more fair.
Todd Howard doesn’t make mistakes, only calculated malice.

I was curious how you’d do spell tomes, since it’s so small and not connected to any missions, always a great video nonetheless
Yeah, literally just one ambush by a random conjurer and thats about it
This was the best I could come up with 😂 group the 2 simple ones together! Cheers!
Thank you my goat just in time for a slumber
Hope you enjoyed your nap my liege

5:51 oh My Sweet Summer child
7:00 I remember when the DOC came out and enjoyed it. I don’t know how you can say DOUBLING the horse’s HP provides “little to no buffs.”
Great vid once again! Are you also going to do videos on the morrowind plugins? Some of them are great like firemoth and master index but some are just eh, i remember finding entertainers the most lackluster even next to horse armor
Fantastix video bard!!
I always use the spell tomes but I've never bought horse armor, I guess I'm still bitter all these years later.
It's crazy cuz by today's standards they both good value now
@6:50 the irony you mention Elder Scrolls Legends the month it goes offline for good. Not even single player mode, just nuked to oblivion Lost Media.
Oh wow I had no clue they took it down 😂
@ABardsBallad You can still play until the 30th. All store items are 1 in game gold. So you can hundreds of packs of cards at once.
Low key spell tomes blew my mind when they 1st came out. That one intro conjurer...
Doing my research, they were actually pretty cool ngl I like the concept of them!
@ABardsBallad it gave higher level, questline-completed characters a reason to go venture into areas looking for good loot chests again. Even maybe a good challenge to try and unlock all spell tomes as a mage.
Spell tomes are neat and make sense from a world perspecrkve
More like Snack-gro-bura amirite guys 🙃
Omg I remember when this dlc came out and everyone was pissed at how little content there was 🤣
3:51 “The entity.” 😢 I think you meant to say best companion ever.”
Well done.
I appreciate it! Glad you liked it! :)
The best DLC ever.
You know it
i watched 71x as much as ur normal viewers according to the youtube rewind, i think i take sleep a little to serious 😅
Such ridiculous dlcs
Definitely a lot of interesting ones!
Woo! Horse Armor!!!!
Oblivion’s necessity!
I mean if the first ever major microtransactions was like weapons/armor then it wouldn’t spark as much controversy but horse armor? Yeah it doesn’t add much value lol
Big time 😂 yeah I could understand the outrage lol
It’s funny because I never used a mount in tes 4 or 5 only eso and in early games like Daggerfall
Oblivion remaster Horse armor 2: electric boogaloo
haha nice topic today.
It’s been on the bucket list for quite some time 😂
Its funny I never bought it until recently for console. And only got the strongholds in the 2010s. Of course on steam you oblivion goty it comes with all of them.
I got this one when it came out, and felt like I got my money's worth. I get the hate, but it wasn't that bad in reality.
The DLC that kick started the microtransactions in games
Pretty sure MMOs were already doing this.
Definitely seems like it! At the very least, for consoles and mainstream games!
Hell yeah
Hope you enjoyed this one!
The horse armor 🤦. If it was actually functional, at least it would be SOMETHING lmao. Absolute humbug it didnt give a health buft or something like that. The elven look nice though. But God lol
It does give a health buff, double their original health actually.
@highlordlaughterofcanada8685 Damn I never knew that. They were pretty squishy eh?
The kicker is that the good horses in the game don’t receive much of a buff at all, it’s only really the bad horses that get anything 😂
Ah, the greatest evil the gaming industry has even seen… DLC for cosmetics!!!!
what started a trend
MMOs had already started that trend, which is why Microsoft told Bethesda they should offer something similar.
😂😂😂 you love to see it
Nothings changed gamers complain about everything but will still buy it. Call of Duty for example.
