    Not being a musician (although I played accordian up till the 6th grade), I've searched for good music my whole life. A real musician once told me that man doesn't create great music. It already exists. It's up to mankind to pluck it out of the "sky" so to speak. Take the rhythms, melodies, all the sounds of the universe and turn it into something that's appealing to our natural senses, especially mood. For example, the intro in "High Falls" by the Allman Brothers...totally absorbing

    JustJeffm. Hit the nail perfectly on the head with respect to Laurie Wisefield mate. Have seen him many times over the years with, Ash, Tina Turner, WOTW and Joe Cocker. He really is a class act and for a guy like Steve Lukather to give him as much praise as he does, he certainly is no slouch.

    I really luv all these guys and their signature styles! Wisefield's sweet clean tone contrasted with Trower's deep distortion really floored me! Derringer & Montrose doing that finger vibrato stuff in sync...they're having as much fun as i am!
    It doesn't get any better than this!!
    Thanks CC328!!

    The electric guitar is a wonderful thing. I have no "natural" talent, yet with years of effort, and a lot of fire I do well enough that people enjoy my playing, even if only at the local bars.Thanks Les, and Leo!

    Montrose is one of the most overlooked guitarists in history. I was a huge fan of the band Montrose and then Gamma, but "Open Fire" put me right through the floor. I don't think there's anything with strings he can't play, in any style.

    Like em' or not, they've all been baptized by fire and are better players than 98% of the guitarists today. Listen to the records each one has produced before passing judgement.

    Ronnie Montrose is the best overall player on that stage that night. You just need to look at his entire catalouge to know that. Jazz, fusiion, rockand roll, acoustic progressive stuff. Yes he can play fast. But fast and WITH GREAT feeling, and slow ith greraqt feeling as well.

    taildragger51,
    I'm compiling a list of all the names you've tossed my way. From Sonny Landreth to Volker Kriegel. You're keeping me busy...When I was younger, I used to experiment and buy used LP's at Poobahs Record Shop in Pasadena, CA. It was an old house converted into a shop and run by a bunch of guys, almost hippie like, who possessed an amazing knowledge of music. Great place to "experiment" and discover unknown (to me) talent. I bought Gabor Szabo there for a buck.

    Wow!Great Jam! One comment: it's supposed to be Music, not Sports. Don't you just hate it when it's turned into a competition of who can blow away who on guitar. Who cares if someone thinks Clapton isn't as good as these guys. Musicians take the stage to play for you, to expose their musical soul, and ultimately hope that their performance moves you in the same way that it moves them. They're not out there to outdo the next guy. What's happened?, have we all become an American Idol audience??

    Wow...just finished listening to some Sonny Landreth and The Derek Trucks Band. Forgive me but I did not recognize those names. Just shows that there is still so much more great music out there that I haven't heard yet. (next up: John McLaughlin and Wes Montgomery) Here's one worth a listen on RUclips: "Night of the Guitars - All Along the Watchtower", featuring Randy California.

    Nobody has really mentioned how difficult it is to play something distinctive in a situation like this. As a player trading solos you want to distinguish yourself from the guys around you. Think about that before criticizing Montrose too much. From his point of view, how would he compete with Trower, who owns the smooth, liquid, vocal-sounding vibrato, or with Wisefield, who owns the blues feeling and phrasing here? I give credit to Ronnie for coming up with something "left-field" here.

    Jan Akkerman (70's rock band from Holland, "Focus") has had a few gems over the years. Western Europeans claim he's "The Greatest Guitar Player." Although I don't believe he would admit to it. Everybody and every land has their star, I guess. "Sylvia," "U do Something to me" are a couple favorites. Hey, check this Dutch garage band; title on RUclips: "U Do Man Something To Us"...nice guitar work, don't you think? (set aside the home video camera work and just listen. Imagine it's at a club.)

    Taildragger51,
    (gotta love that user name. I used to be president of the local Procrastinator's Club but we never got around to holding our first meeting) Insightful comments. I turn on music to be turned on. I crave the sound that moves me, that song that just hits the right notes. To me, it's not as important who performed it, but the performance itself. If the artist happens to be egocentric, a jerk...oh well, the song still sounds good. If the artist has good character, the better for him

  • @garyguitar

    So many songs to hear, so little time. Now you've done it! I've got to set aside time now to really take in McLaughlin, Trucks, Landreth, and Montgomery. Y'know, I'm trying to cut down on RUclips time as it is. ..I'll have to forward some gems I found by Mark Knopfler and also Jan Akkerman. Question: are there websites for audio listening only, no purchasing or downloading req'd? And, are most or your favorite songs performed by sincere, egoless artists, or by the opposite? Be honest, now.

    Wisefield was by far the best. I'm more of a Trower/Montrose guy, but Wisefield schooled them. Trower was decent, but Montrose looked like a guitarist who's been out of a job too long and is overdoing it to get the gig...lol.

      Kashaslove that's RONNIE MONTROSE who played with Van Morrison Boz Scaggs Edgar Winter before starting his namesake band Montrose which was the band that introduced Sammy Hagar to the world before recording about 10 or 11 Jazz Rock Fusion albums and
      4 Progressive hard rock albums with a band called GAMMA and an acoustic instrumental Masterpiece titled BEARINGS not to mention the entire soundtrack from a very popular video game from the 1990s titled
      MR. BONES.
      Herbie Hancock and jazz drummer Tony Williams also absolutely loved Ronnie, asked Ronnie to play in their bands and tours.

    • @dylanchangedeverythingfore1312
      @dylanchangedeverythingfore1312 5 лет назад +1

      Stevie Ross I agree Steve Ross Robin Trower is a tasty player but we all know anyone who's heard Ronnie's entire body of work know how incredibly tasty Ronnie can he-he only hints at it here but is tasty WHILE shredding here and during his own main set that night..he's the tastiest when he wants to be.
      Sometimes though but when everybody else has their hoods open showing everybody their engines and saying listen how smooth my engine is there is that one guy who hops in the front seat of his car and blows them all away which is what Ronnie did here doesn't mean Ronnie can't play tasty just didn't choose to play slow and tasty this time but there's plenty plenty plenty of examples of Ronnie being a tonemaster and playing tasting over his 40 plus year career you don't record 10-11 Jazz Rock Fusion albums or get to play with Van Morrison Edgar Winter Boz Scaggs Tony Williams by being simply a shredder

  • @depper

  • @jasonpfrey

    Ronnie's just putting some MUCH NEEDED shred up against some typical, boring ass blues backing! A lot of notes has just as much melody as 1 or 2 notes, depending on their application. It isn't mindless, expand your freakin' horizons.

  • @Napco205
    @Napco205 16 лет назад

    Nobody on stage are even "true" blues musicians better known for HardRock. Gary is a wannabe blues musician who tries to hard. Kinda funny how he conviently started cutting blues tone albums after SRV died.

    Rick is a great player BUT this night, as said before he was showboating too much--it didnt happen. Montrose played some crap--Trower played some cool stuff. BUT for taste, tone, feeling and musical content, Wisefield showed them. Of course it's a matter of what flops your mop.
