- This is part 2 in the series in which I try my hand at fiberglass repair. I am by no means an expert at any of this. This video shows the process I use from paint to finish. Enjoy.
Materials Used:
Bondo Fiberglass Cloth
Bondo Stage 2 Fiberglass Resin
Bondo Stage 3 Body Filler
Interlux Pre-Kote Primer (White)
Interlux Special Thinner Solvent 216
Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Paint (Sapphire Blue)
Interlux Brightside Polyurethane Paint (Black)
Nice job ! Well done, congrats!
Have fun with your new kajak!🙏
Awesome job! I’ve just bought my first kayak for $50 and got a second one in worse condition for free. Your step by step will be watched over and over as I attempt my diy. 🤙🏽
That's Awesome. Glad I could be of some help. Good luck.
i guess it is kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to watch newly released movies online?
Ha! I caught that Count von Count reference. Nice!
Looks awesome man!!! Great job 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Looks great, good as new! Top job 👌🏻
I just picked up a kevlar Narwhal from Boreal. I suspect I will come back and watch this video a few more times before its said and done.
Great info!
Awesome job!
Nicely done!
WOW. This turned out incredible, congrats!
Thank you
Love it Troy, great job!!
Thank you.
Incredibly well done. Am getting ready to refurbish a kayak I just bought. Thanks for inspiring me. :)
Glad I could be helpful.
I refurbed my first poly Kayak this past summer. Had a blast. Nowe I know how to fix the fiberglass when I move up , than k you.
Nice job mate! Love the P-40 shark mouth.
Thanks. I thought it needed a little something when it was all painted.
Nice job! Looks great.
Thank you. It was a fun project.
👏👏👏
Really enjoyed this video.
Very helpful as I consider a similar first repair that will also be my first time working with fiberglass.
I appreciated hearing the back story.
Hate the pain of loosing great photo/video memories
Go again with the “new” yak and recapture it to share with us !!
Great Kaye’s back style
Would have liked more how instruction on laying on the resin and glass but your example is great.
Love the out come
Love the chickens
Not totally sure what I thought of the music though it was fun. ;-)
Hope you’ve had a blast in your good looking yak!
Glad you enjoyed the video. Taking her out on lake superior next weekend!
Woaaaw
I refurbished a kevlar/fibreglass bottom kayak this past fall. (20 years old) The hull was pretty banged up, soft in sections with long scars you could push in along with an actual hole that did not penetrate the cloth webbing. One thing about fibreglass is that it is infinitely repairable. I used that clear hard glass you see on wooden tables encased in what appears as a hard clear acrylic-- super strong and durable but, I probably added a good extra pound in weight. The saving grace was the kevlar top which was scared with scratches and looking tired and dull. I experimented with a heat gun and a car buffer with compound on one of the hatches and it came out looking brand new. The kayak looks fabulous now and the repairs are holding up. Originally refurbished for resale-- I'm not selling it now.
Nice. Always hard to sell after you put that much love into it!
U done a good job.i got a 17 foot Kevlar that I would love to paint the Bottom but I haven't figured out what's the best paint to use...can u tell me
Mate that looks pretty good. I have just started experimenting with kayak repair myself. Since this was made 3 years ago can you tell me how the paint has held up? I have always shied away from painting over the gel coat. I have always re-applied gel coat, which is a lot harder than painting and you dont always get a uniform colour. You restore looks pretty schmick (mean stylish in Australian), so if the paint holds up to salt water then I may look at it in the future.
Great job Tony. I have the same kayak with no damage but needs a refurbish job. Was thinking about wet sanding rather than painting then buffing with rubbing compound. on the other hand, your paint job is quite impressive. Did you purchase the design on the bow....pretty cool looking. thanks! Ray
Thank you. My kayak had been poorly painted over when I got it so I had to sand it all the way down. I don’t know how thick the original paint was on these boats. It would certainly be worth trying the wet sanding and buffing. Yes, I did buy the decals on the front. I found them on Amazon. I think they look cool. Good luck with your project.
Qual é a tinta usada para pintar caiaque???
After the paint is there supposed to be some sort of protective gel coating or something like that?
Many thanks for the videos and the materials list. I'm planning a similar project for an older 17.5' Necky. Can you give the approximate quantities of primer and brightside you used on the hull and deck?
Hi Mitch, not sure about the amounts. I would actually recommend a different method at this point. Something more durable will hold up better. I’m no expert, but from what I hear gel coat is a better way to go. Hope that helps.
Go bears!!
Da Bears!
Your videos are great. Can we have the list of the products that you are using for your project ?
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve added a materials list in the video description. Hope it helps.
So I've watched your 2 vids after I made a bad purchase if an extremely beat up fiberglass kayak, alot of TLC is needed. Because there is so many holes and scratches what do you suggest, also can I add any hardware on that I want as it has non, or will drilling screw holes and all that make it worse? Thank you 😊
I'm certainly no expert. This is the only repair I've ever done. You should be able to add hardware above the water line without any problems. Hope this helps.
Very nice ... I just finished an oldy duo recently ... Have look-see 👁️ ... My first attempt
Nice work!
Doing the same thing(only more repair work)...but I'm wondering how long the 1 part interlux lasted? I was hoping to use the two part, but never sprayed paint and don't know if you can spray interlux perfection. Thanks for sharing, I Iike the blue!
I've only had it out a few times since I finished it last fall, but has held up well so far. Thanks.
@@DrArcturus Nice! I ended up using spray cans and it turned out real nice...I put a stainless skid bar on the bottom to help slow the wear.
Could you share in the description all the materials you used? Ideally, with links to buy, but just the names would be great, too. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve added a materials list in the video description. Hope it helps.
Troy, I'd love to talk sometime and pick your brain.
I'm looking to refinish an old fiberglass kayak myself and give it a dark wooden look. Any tips on a specific method and process to really give it that look?
Hi Ian, sorry for taking so long to reply. I'm no expert on this subject. This is the only paint job I've ever done. Hope you were able to find answers elsewhere. I'd love to see the finished product. It sounds really cool.
Awsome i missed what type paint
Glad you enjoyed the video. Upon recommendation from my local marine supply shop I used Interlux Brightside Polyurethane premium single part enamel paint with their solvent #216. Hope this helps. Good luck with your kestrel!
@@DrArcturus awsome thank you for the response it helps
what rope did you use? 5mm elastic?
I used 3/16" non-stretch deck line from SGT Knots for the deck line and elastic cord for the front and back cargo nets. Hope this helps.
Nice work, but you are going to eat blue eggs. :) Your painting job seems to be close enough your animals ...I hope I'm wrong ! ☺
Ahh, that’s why we got blue eggs!
looks great. those shark teeth have to go.
Thanks. I’m sure they’ll fall off soon enough. 😂
