The clearest and steadiest tutorial I have watched. Organised easy to watch and in no way rushed. I am new to drones and this clearly showed me what IMU is for and how to Calibrate the Mini to achieve success. 5 Stars!
I don’t even want to tell you what I was doing to “calibrate vertically” but after watching this video i’m having an OMG moment that is making me wonder if i also have simple movements like the macarena dance wrong also. so embarrassing. thank you for making this.. now i’m ready to make more travel videos for youtube!😳
Since I already own 2 DJI drones, I am completely familiar with these two processes, BUT this is great information for a new drone owner. BOTH are necessary for proper drone operation. Thanks for the concise explanation in this video.
Thank you. I was completely doing the 2nd part of the calibration wrong. I had been rotating the MINI as if it were doing a summersault. I didn't even know about that 3rd calibration. Well done.
I did the same thing the first time. Now I know why it's asking for IMU calibration. Like he said in the video. Everytime you put the drone in a car to go flying it needs to have IMU calibrated. So now have to find portable table to carry around I guess. Finding a flat surface in the middle of a field is pretty hard.
Great tutorial Billy. Another idea might be to put some small elastic bands around each arm to hold the propellers in place during calibration also keep your mobile phone away from the drone during the calibration. Happy flying.
Good video; thank you. Right to the point. It kills me when someone takes 10 minutes to tell you what their Grandma did last year for Christmas, before imparting the info the title suggests.
Indeed, I hate those video extending morons with a passion, I refuse to watch them, they'll get zero ad revenue from me! Honestly I'd like to Jay and silent Bob strikes back those clowns like at the end of the movie, hahaha
Can you make a video of the proper way to pack up your mavac mini? Im always a little worried that i am folding up the propellers the wrong way and putting unnecessary stress on the propellers and engines. Also, your channel is very informative. Thanks for making these videos!
Thank you for the video. I would just suggest that when you are going through the compass calibration that you mention what direction you are rotating the drone. It appears that during both horizontal and vertical, you were rotating clockwise. If it doesn't make a difference, then that should be addressed also.
DJI Mini. Flashing Red, Page 12 manual says IMU. Found this video. Yes I crashed my Mini. I couldn't get it to connect UNTIL I started to rotate the drone and then it connected and followed Billy's instructions WOAH, fixed. Thank Goodness. Other videos said just wait for update lol, wait forever! Thanks for the video mate.
just came in from a project where the app said I needed to recalibrate both so I attempted to so however I was standing only a couple feet from my vehicle, I tried several times and got a failure each time. Completely frustrated I came back to the office and found this video, I did not know not to stand next to the vehicle. 20 mile round trip so now my ignorant ass gets to make the trip again.
I was doing the compass calibration incorrectly. That's probably why each time I fly it tells me it needs it. Also the aircraft is unstable in hover. It tends to want to yaw slightly when it should be still, and this morning as I was bringing it down over the porch for a landing it lurched forward and crashed into the door. I will do both compass and IMU, IMU having never been done on this since I unboxed it. Thanks for this, Kyle.
Billy. The screws have lock tight on them. Basically single use, unless one has more lock tight. Lock tight binds/glues with friction. Keep up the excellent work on the videos. Still waiting on mine to come in the mail.
I noticed that in the IMU calibration when you place the drone on its right side it leans over to rest on the front but when you do the left side it remains upright. I know that on a perfectly flat surface the mini will not remain upright when on its side, it wants to lean over. Does it matter it it is leaning over or upright in the calibration?
I tried to calibrate my compass it said it failed. I assume while I was spinning my drone I was holding my controller with my left hand to view the outcome. I think I need to stand away from my controller and use the green light indicator. Hope this works on my next flight
You answered my question about the props on in IMU calibration. I was wondering about removing it like I do with the Spark. It's good to know that you can keep them on, because that would be too much work in screwing it back- Thanks Billy.
Great stuff! This is gotta be one of the most important tips for anyone learning to fly drones for the first time! And a Nice reminder for us drone veterans. I’ve done some reviews on the mavic air, looking forward to trying out the mini!
Just a note for beginners, You will beed to calibrate Low Cost Beginner Drones everytime you start the drone, however, most of all these DJI and Professional Drones do not need a Calibration as they have memory systems and remember the factories calibration, or they might need just one calibration when you first get it.
During the IMU calibration it's strange that the drone doesn't actually lean on its side, perfectly vertical or "Plumb". It tips until the motor touches the flat surface. It almost tips over onto its back. Don't hold it Plumb with your finger. It's suppose to be that way.
So it's normal for one of the two sides to be 'angled' when laying down on it's own? On one side my mavic mini lays perfectly flat and parallel to the table. On the other it's at an angle like in this video. I'm not sure what to do
Hi.. thanks for the information...as u mentioned that compass calibration also required after travelling with drone. I just travelled with drone and now I am facing unstable hovering issue, pls suggest?
Thank you for this video! It actually worked! I was getting stuck at 95% and the instructions were not clear about the rotation piece. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You probably dont care but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Ralph Alaric I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.

Calibrating compass was easy but the IMU seems stuck with the phone screen showing 95%. What to do? The drone is flashing green fast. Great I just installed the prop guard. So I uninstall the guard. What do you call near to metal? A foot or a yard? maybe this was filmed before the update but now the phone screen shows you how to turn it and when. I finally make it work after 30 min. thanks, you were some help though.....every little snag happens and then...shutdown Overheating!! This baby is heat sensitive!
Fixed the error for the mavic mini when it says “check gps settings or calibrate mobile phone compass”. I thought it was about satellite range and spread, blah blah. It was a location service iPhone security issue. Go to Settings>>Privacy>>Location Services>>DJI Fly App>>Always. For some reason when you set it up the DJI fly app and asks if it can get permissions to use your photo, location services... it changed its security setting for location services to ask. No wonder I kept getting the gps error even at multiple locations. I hope this helps you guys. Took me a day to figure out 😊
What’s your thoughts on making the drone as cold as possible before performing an IMU calibration. I understand that way it helps with a quicker start up at all temperatures.
Where you say don't calibrate near any metal, this might sound a stupid question but my shoulder is held together with metal plates and pins so could this affect the calibration.
Just ordered a Mavic Mini. Looking forward to watching your videos. Question.... Is there a way using the app to post videos directly to online ie: RUclips or FB ?
I went to fly in a field and the fly app prompted for gyro calibration. I did the calibration all wrong. The vertical rotation I messed up. Flew ok till I got criticala low battery warning. Made it back and landed. This was my first long range flight and had just done a Dronelink flight plan, which worked almost flawlessly . Dronelink didn't prompt for calibration. When I decided to fly the drone manually with the Fly app it prompted for gyro. I have a question. Isn't it important to do the IMU on a level surface ? Short of carrying a table around what can you do to make sure you have a level surface ?
Yep I had a minor boo boo so that explains why my drone was leaning to one side in the wind and the horizon was off a bit. I'll have to try that out very informative.
Hi I hope you can help me out with this one. I calibrated my Mavic Mini and took off. About a minute in to my flight, a message pops up saying "Compass Calibration Required". This is not all the time, but when it happens, should I be concern and land my drone as soon as possible?
Hey Kyle, good video dude. I’m a long time subscriber but find myself with a question that possibly you can answer for me. Do you have any videos on how to tighten up your control sticks on the Mini 2? Basically the right stick, my movements are sloppy and I would like to tighten them down with more positive stick control.
While doing IMU calibration and placing my mavic mini on one side, it lays perfectly flat and parallel to the table but on the other side it lays at an angle. Is this normal, if not should I be holding it flat on the angled side?

I crashed and broke 5 blades; I replaced all 8, because those not broken were scratched. When trying to take off and hover, the drone lifted about 2ft and flew backwards into a snow bank. No props were broken so I tried again and this time it went up 3-4ft and then full speed backwards until it hit a taller snow bank. Will Calibrating the Compass and IMU fix this?
Hey billy I just got my mavic today I did all the software updates required and also the compass and imu calibration , I took it out for a flight and notice that my screen kept saying “imu altitude error” ? Should I do the imu calibration again? Pls help thanks again
Another video about calibrating the IMU put out on the same date (Nov 10) by Drone Valley has the arms of the drone extended and the graphics on the DJI app have them extended also and on your DJI app the arms are closed. There's also a difference in how the compass is calibrated horizontally and vertically. Strange. His horizontal and vertical positions are different than yours. I calibrated the compass on a drone I have the way you do but drone valley's horizontal and vertical are different. I'd like to know what's what.

Billy, quick question for you. Got my fly more combo over the weekend. In doing my part 107 registration as I’ve done with my P4P, I used the serial number on the box, which matches the serial number inside the battery compartment. Today after setting up the Fly app, I noticed the app automatically shows me a totally different aircraft serial number. Is this the case for yours too? Thanks.
Thanks Billy. I searched the DJI forums and found others have the same issue. Someone reported the following: “The S/N on the box and the battery cover should be the same. The aircraft S/N in the app will be different. I was concerned too and DJI told me that the S/N on the box is the one that needs to be registered when activating DJI Care Refresh.” Maybe a bug with the app? We’ll see if this gets corrected in future firmware updates. Thanks and keep up the great videos.

thank you so much for the help because of this we finally flew the bird after 5 weeks
Funny, out of all the videos I've seen this is one of the few that mention the IMU. Thanks for this walkthrough.
Seems just like previous DJI drones, the process is pretty simple. Exactly as you said, stay away from metal objects! - especially the car.

Dji Mavic mini or a used mavic pro (1)?What should I buy?
thank you for your practical information really worth watching
Billy, quick question for you. Got my fly more combo over the weekend. In doing my part 107 registration as I’ve done with my P4P, I used the serial number on the box, which matches the serial number inside the battery compartment.
Today after setting up the Fly app, I noticed the app automatically shows me a totally different aircraft serial number. Is this the case for yours too? Thanks.
Woah, really? Not for me. That’s weird. I’d contact DJI support.
Thanks Billy. I searched the DJI forums and found others have the same issue. Someone reported the following:
“The S/N on the box and the battery cover should be the same. The aircraft S/N in the app will be different. I was concerned too and DJI told me that the S/N on the box is the one that needs to be registered when activating DJI Care Refresh.”
Maybe a bug with the app? We’ll see if this gets corrected in future firmware updates.
Thanks and keep up the great videos.
being so light weight, in what wind speeds can you fly it??
Quick and simple. Thank you
Hello have you ever had a sensor error with the Mavic Mini?
really helpful, I just couldn't make sense of what the illustrations were showing me!
Keep drone rotating for 3 minutes until light turns green, allow it rest on its sides for 3 seconds before flight. -IMU Compass basting process
Can IMU be calibrated indoor?
I was looking for this question before I asked the same question. Just got mines today.
