    My 2 month and 500 miles review of the ninebot One Z10 Electric Unicycle! And why I think it is one of the most interesting EUC you can purchase right now. Also, my weekly obsession: the SmallRig Cage for me Canon 80D.
    the extra wide tire, the unique design, its heavy weight. everything about the Z10 is completely different from all the other wheels out there. Beyond the look, it also rides completely differently. But I think the its complex riding characteristic is part of its strength. Here here's why.

    Awesome video! Your description of the benefits and drawbacks of this wheel mirror how I often think about the onewheel, which is my thang at the moment. These EUCs are looking more and more interesting!

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад

      Thanks! I think the EUCs are generally a bit more practical since they are easier to wheel around with their handles than the onewheel and also are capable of greater speed/ range. I think the OW is really interesting and might jump onboard if they are able to squeeze just a bit more speed and range into the thing!

    Great vid! I'm with you when it comes to speed, not just because of the physics of the wheel and breaking capability, but also because of the physics of the human body + speed = a force of impact I don't think many EUC riders are aware of. Safety gear is a must, but you'll still get hurt at +30 mph, and a bouncing wheel at that speed could be a real danger for pedestrians. Don't get me wrong, I love speed, and I have been doing ski jumping, alpine skiing and downhill biking, but on my XL I get more of a kick going 12-15 mph on a narrow off-road trail than what I get from 30 mph on level surfaces.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks! And yes, very much so about the danger of speed. I have seen a Gotway monster cutout at about 25mph and aside from the rider getting hurt, the wheel also went bouncing down the road for at least 20-30 yards and at 72 lbs is a pretty scary sight. But aside from the danger, with the big stable wheel like the z10 I feel like there are some real potential for tricks at lower speed. Only downside is that its cost and availability probably put it out of reach for kids whom have the time to actually practice and come up with more interesting things..

    • @Ylte
      @Ylte 5 лет назад +1

      @@OWGAC I almost pulled the trigger on the Z10, but having ridden a Onewheel+ for a year I wanted to eradicate range anxiety completely, so I bought the KS-18XL. The low speed stability looks awesome on the Z10, but don't feel any low speed discomfort on the XL. I'm more stable at low speed on my XL than on my KS-16S, so I think the balance of the wheel and how it fits your body is very important. If Ninebot gets a good European vendor and they release a Z15/16 (1554WH), then I would buy one, just because it is different and cool:) I'm sure I can love the XL and the Z10 equally;) The only thing that concerns me with the Z10 for my usage, is the pedal height on narrow off-road trails.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +2

      I heard a lot of great things about the KS 18XL, I am sure you'll have just as much fun with it. but don't just go from point A to point B, have fun, pratice going backward! If they can do a 900 on a skateboard I am sure we can pull off some interesting thing if we all just try to push boundary a bit more!

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +1

      @@petercochrane1992 the one I saw that went bouncing down the street was a current 100v model; the wheel did cut out but at 25mph + speed any object that weight as much as a monster will go bouncing down the street like a Canon ball. Also since the motor cut out, the brake also went so the wheel will continue to turn.

    Great review! I don't own an e-board or e-unicycle but have driven them when available. They are fun and I love having my hands free. I may eventually get one but kick scooters are just better for most commuting situations. I find electric kick scooters to be better overall for commuting and just getting around and have well over 7000 miles on them. They also can fit in my gym locker when folded unlike unicycles. Another big advantage you mentioned is the braking capability. It is no contest between motor braking and mechanical braking. My bigger and faster scooters have disc brakes or drum brakes. My lightest and most portable scooter has motor braking and rear friction brake which is the least capable. Even the least capable mechanical is better than motor braking.
    I think any e-vehicle is a good thing to have on a commute but e-scooters don't really need as much protection to feel safe. I think the big helmet you wear when riding the Z10 is almost a must after seeing that crash. I hope you are okay. You are also prone to serious wrist injuries because of the higher risk of end over crashes. I have had some crashes over the many miles on my scooters. None of the crashes were anywhere near as bad as that end over you survived. I wear just a normal bike helmet and it has been more than enough protection. In the end it is great for people to use any of the great electric options we have today.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you! Oh I love escooter also, as a matter of fact I started with a goped e scooter years ago.and its still sitting in my parents garage. I think EUC is different since you "ride" a scooter but an electric unicycle is more like an extension of yourself, which you control with your posture rather than a set of handle and throttle. You have both of your hands free and is able to mix with walking pedestrian since you don't really take up any more room. But yet they are harder to learn to "ride" than a scooter.. since I design enironment I am really facinated by them all

    • @RCDevotee
      @RCDevotee 5 лет назад +1

      @@OWGAC Agreed. I really want to get a EUC or OneWheel sometime in 2019 to add to my electric choices for non-commute times. They look to be very fun and more engaging.

    Good stuff man as always.
    Yes, the Z is not the best braking EUC, but IMHO, never straight-line brake, always couple with S-curves, which increases stopping distance. Every other device with additional wheels cannot pivot on a dime like a single-wheeled device (single contact patch) can, so it's not a very good comparison since mult-wheeled devices can Only straight-line brake. On an EUC, you will always have infinitely more relative side/braking turning area, when compared to the much larger, more surface area pivot plane vs side/braking turning area of a 2-or-more wheeled device.... that is unless you unwisely traveling very tightly in an eboarding/EUC group ride pack.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! Yes, I am actually use to turning as I brake, old habit from roller blading days. However not quite sure I understand your comment about multi-wheeled device and straight line braking as you can definitely execute a power slide brake on a bike as long as the surface allows it. Mechanical braking let you to lock up the wheel and use the friction between the wheel and the ground to scrub speed (ABS modulate for better control) I don’t believe motor braking on an EUC allows this since the wheel need to maintain balance also, so you can never lock up the wheel. At least I don’t think? Power slide on a Uni?

    • @houseofjob
      @houseofjob 5 лет назад +1

      @@OWGAC Well, power sliding is a totally different maneuver, different argument altogether vs simple braking. I've seen it attempted somewhere on EUC somewhere on RUclips.
      Bicycles are easier to powerslide I think not because of the braking mechanism type, but the weight displacements: on a bicycle, the weight is not directly over either wheel, whereas on an EUC, the weight is Always directly over the lone wheel. The former I think allows you to create this slippage, where the tires have less sigma weight on them individually, and you can offset the weight loads dynamically.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад

      So just curious, why do you think that the Z is weak on the braking, the wider contact patch should had made it better at it? Is it its greater weight? Or some sort of weird control quirk since it currently one of the battery instead of both? Is braking on another wheel with similar motor, say the KS 18XL noticeably better?

    • @houseofjob
      @houseofjob 5 лет назад

      @@OWGAC Yes, those are obviously factors, but the main thing is how they fine tune the firmware. The preprod firmware was a noticeably better braker, but also didn't have the increased forward power performance that this current firmware has.
      As per the nature of EUC braking, engaging the brakes is the wheel essentially trying to go backwards. This, along with accelerating from rest; going up steep hills; and hitting bumps at speed, is the most taxing on an EUC, creating current spikes (unlike accelerating at speed, which contrary to common misconception, does not require that much power, as the wheel has momentum at its favor). You can see this phenomenon, as people who have gone overboard with hard pendulums can often observe weird behavior and/or cutout on an EUC.
      Since the current Z firmware allows for more power going forward, much caution needs to be taken when fine tuning the firmware for braking, so as not to send too much braking current to the motor, which can potentially damage the motor. Additionally, the low 52V / 14S running voltage , which inherently requires higher current (A) to achieve similar power to higher voltage wheels, makes the engineering of the Z firmware for good braking that much more difficult

    Nice video, I too started with an i5 and progressed to bigger wheels. I have to disagree that the Z10 is the best wheel, granted it is good in certain areas but it's limitations make it really only half a wheel. They are both more “traditional” wheels, the Gotway have the speed advantage while the Kingsong is much better on reliability. So MSX for speed, Z10 for fun and KS XL for safe and reliable wheel?

    Hi Hsiang ! !! ! How I follow you since 1 year now. I wanted to share with you my experience as I see you are "promoting" #segway.
    I have both an Inmotion v8 and a Segway z10. Both suffered (more than 5000km riding now) a tire pressure loss.
    - It took 3 weeks to fix the tire with Inmotion Global
    - It' s taking 4 MONTHS to fix the tire with Segway España through the Spanish service repair.
    Useless to say, I sent so many complains this is the only way I can distress while looking at the empty box : Social media.
    I think it' s fair everyone knows. because it' s thanks to videos like yours and other riders, I decided to go for Segway instead of another brand, to step up my rider level . I think this is something very important. I basically spent 2000 euros for an item I used 1 month before it breaks, and the service repair is unable to repair since 4 months.
    Wish you the best and keep up the great work !
    Best,
    David

      Unfortunately ninebot isn't very good at providing support; at least you have support in Europe, here in the US I had to pay for the parts needed to repair my z10 and I had to wait four month also. now keep in mind that neither kingsong or gotway offer support and only the dealer do. but ninebot does seem slow with providing parts, which may be why it took so long to repair yours.

      No, it totally did its job and I didn’t even realized that I smash my face into the pavement until after I watch the video, the helmet looks fine except a small chip on the paint on the chin piece. I would definitely recommend getting a full face helmet for EUC since the way we fall tends to be facedown, and a regular helmet will not protect your chin/ jaw area.

    Sweet video man. Totally agree with you and your assessment on the Z10 and it's riding dynamics(Disagree 100% @10:45 about the gotways as well as a predictable wheel being boring. That's like saying driving a sports car that's fun and easy to drive is boring because it's predicable around corners or accelerating lol. IMO). Also @11:54 Your crash, like in your other video where you also crashed in like manner, is hugely due to the tubeless tires on your EUC, in that, you have a very low level of absorption from the impact (which to me looks like you hit something actually). I know this because I've been in terrible potholes in Boston and due to the softness of the impact, I made it out just fine. That's not to say It's not possible to crash with a tubbed tire in such conditions, but it's more likely in tubeless like yours. Be safe out there man, please stop crashing like this if you can help it. Happy riding

  • @JinSin85

    As always a great video. I can almost completely confirm your experiences with the z10. Whether the range reaches everyone has to decide for themselves. However, the maximum speed is enough and for a little more speed you can now make the raud again 10 km / h faster via the software. what I feel differently is that the braking distance is only too long at the beginning, with a lot of practice, the z10 can be stopped very quickly and thanks to the mature on almost every surface. I hope it will follow more videos about the z10. What is your maximum range with the cold temperatures? (And weight with full equipment).

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you! yes, I do think that my proficiency with braking will improve over time, I use to rollerblade frequently and if I can brake on a rollerblade I am sure I can on the Z10 also! I am not sure about the cold weather range, however from my winter warrior ride; I left the first charge point with 95% battery (30F/ -1C and reduce capacity) and only made 15-16 miles (25km) before the battery drop down to 40%, and then the wheel won't turn back on after a 4-5 minute shut down. I probably could have gone further if I had not shut down, but I believe cold does have a significant impact on the Z10

    I'm considering using this for WORK out in the country, driving through grass and dirt, and possibly going over fences. That's why I'd hoped this could be lifted over a fence, to continue on the others side. This is why 4wheelers aren't as useful to us. But we do have to carry shovels and metal detectors in a big that are somewhat delicate with a handheld tablet. But we don't go fast! Could it work?

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад

      everything you carried has to fit into a backback. weigth is less of an issue; since you're just basically standing in place. it might work depending on the ground condition you're traversing, dirt trail would work but if you have to ride over grass field it'll be tough since with a single wheel EUCs aren't that great with potholes. also, keep in mind that since you have to obsorb most of the bumps with your legs, it does get a bit tiring, sort of like sking or snowboarding.

      @OWGAC  5 лет назад

      Thank you! Riding dynamic really change once you start to go above 15mph as the centrifugal forces from the spinning wheel starts to come into play. If you only been riding for a month, I would take more time to practice on the V5F. Keep in mine that this is actually the time you would most likely to fall and hurt yourself as you are comfortable and confident enough to go fast but not experienced enough to react when something unexpected comes up. The Z10 is a more stable wheel just from the weight alone but it ride very differently at speed

      I’m currently practicing mounting. I need to stop looking at pedals as I mount so I can keep eyes oncoming traffic left/right. Also timing my braking distance and simulate collision avoidance. Right now I still have to think what my legs/body should do in event of avoiding someone or something that comes out of no where. sometimes forcing me me to jump of the wheel because my reflex all bit delayed. I should stay away from the streets for now lol

But unlike driving a car, where I’m already accustomed to the same streets I’ve driven on for many years. , I’m relearning the NYC terrain all over again, I think that’s the main appeal also riding this new mode on transportation, it seemed to have unlocked a fresh perspective of the city both full of excitement as well as its dangers.

You may already be aware of this and be living with it! I have a left knee problem and have to very consciously even my weight distribution and effort to avoid favouring my right side. In my case this has helped to strengthen my weaker side.

      Alain Saaiman yes except that brake in modern cars works really really well, while brake in EUC aren’t that great (poor traction/ stability, motor braking only) my suggestions comes from 20 years of rollerblading where we had the same issue. If you don’t practice turning and braking at the same time, you may run into situation where there simply aren’t sufficient time/ room for you to come to a stop.

      I think it is a bit extreme to call 28mph "lacking", speed above 30mph is extremely risky; we just had a rider here in NYC hit a car on an MSX, from what I heard, he hit so hard he dented the side of the car and send both him and the driver to the hospital. I get you want speed, but I think to the average rider Z10 is certainly sufficiently capable.

    Your understanding of braking physics is all wrong, bro. Motor braking isn't necessarily worse than disc braking. At some point, you're limited by the tire friction anyway. The motors they pack into these EUCs are pretty beefy, so their maximum torque is comparable to the friction limit.
    EUCs need more braking distance than scooters because before you can decelerate, the contact patch needs to be moved in front of your center of gravity: the wheel needs to accelerate in front of you. It takes extra distance to make this happen. Typically you're limited here by how heavy the wheel is: heavier wheels are slower to accelerate (for a given maximal force applied by the rider's toes), while lighter wheels are snappier.
    That said, is it a big enough deal to conclude that EUCs are unsafe at high speed? I don't think so. Nothing stops in zero distance; you need to be careful at high speeds anyway, regardless of vehicle type. In fact, I'd argue that EUCs are safer than kick scooters and skateboards because the wheel is bigger, so it gets you over rocks and potholes better. And the GotWay MSX's high speeds are actually a safety feature, when you consider that the biggest dangers on the road are cars: cutting across lanes of traffic is safer if you can keep pace with them.
    I'm hoping to see more models with higher top speeds, creeping up to 70KPH. Especially the Z10.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +1

      Need I remind you that you a on a single wheel, which has only a single contact patch. There are no redundancy, you have zero inherent stability, is it possible sure. But I am not sure how you can argue that one point of contact is safer than two. Don’t get me wrong I love my Z10, however I think their strength is maneuverability, range and flexibility. If I want all out speed, I ride a motorcycle.
      Btw I do admit that motorbraking can work well since I was shocked by how well the regen braking on the boosted scooter works.

    • @zekerandolph1397
      @zekerandolph1397 5 лет назад +1

      @@OWGAC You're absolutely right: because of the lack of redundancy, we tend to (read: must) back off somewhat from the friction limit, which also contributes to not decelerating as rapidly. (I didn't want to mention it because I though it'd make my comment too long ;-) ). Motorcycles tend not to fare too well when they lose traction either (traction on front and back wheels is not fully redundant), but at least they do somewhat better.
      Point was, though, that arguing that there is no point to going fast on an EUC because its stopping distance is somewhat greater is flawed: motor braking isn't so bad, and no matter the vehicle, it takes distance to stop anyway. Furthermore, the ability to go faster is good for safety, because it decreases the likelihood of being squashed by cars when cutting across multiple lanes, for example, to get to a left-turn. Chooch Tech shares this opinion. Perhaps this sentiment is caused by living in suburbia, where cars go faster and are less friendly (read: more murderous) to bicyclists and other alternative means of transit.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, riding condition are very different in the city vs the suburb. However the same sentiment was also repeated in the motorcycle world for years. Greater speed allows you to speed away from trouble. I am however never sure about that one, yes it works sometime but if you're trying to race against an aggressive car driver, you are putting yourself in more danger than if you simply pull over and let things cool. Just last weekend, there's an incident here in NYC, where a rider but bumped by an SUV, luckily he was going slow and the fall wasnt bad, but it had happen at higher speed it could easily have been way worst.

    • @zekerandolph1397
      @zekerandolph1397 5 лет назад +1

      @@OWGAC I see what you're saying: extra speed doesn't make you safer if you're going to be in a race; if anything, it makes the race more dangerous by allowing it to reach higher speeds.
      However, that runs under the assumption that you will be racing anyway---an assumption which is usually not true. There are many instances when drivers elicit aggressive and dangerous behavior *expressly because* they don't want to be held back by a slower vehicle or bicyclist: they swerve, accelerate, and then cut you off. And because of their aggressive behavior, other cars around them will also behave less predictably. However, had you kept pace with traffic, they wouldn't have engaged in such behavior. In other words, simply being slower than the pace of traffic frequently triggers races.
      In other cases, drivers aren't trying to beat anybody: they're just moving at the pace of traffic, and you're trying to cut across several lanes to get to a turning lane. By merging in front of them, you endanger yourself by being a slower vehicle that they aren't expecting and so might not see.
      Assuming that a race will occur, a higher top speed will cause you more danger. But a higher top speed will reduce the occurrence of races to begin with.

    • @OWGAC
      @OWGAC  5 лет назад +2

      @@zekerandolph1397 I also have been riding an Piaggio Mp3 500 for the past ten years. And I don't feel any safer on that scooter because it can go 95mph, I feel safer because it has 3 contact patches and 3 motorcycle grade Calibur disk brake. I met plenty of aggressive drivers in my past, they are easy to spot. I always pull to the side and let them pass. IMHO there are no dangerous vehicle, just dangerous people and behaviors.
