I have the Canon EF 24-105 F4 L lens and I wanted to get the 24-50 kit lens for the times when I know I’ll mainly be shooting at around the wide end. I ended up using the 24-50 more than the 24-105 because it’s so much lighter and smaller and both to my eyes are just as sharp. Lots of people dog this 24-50 kit lens but it really packs a punch if you don’t generally shoot at around 50mm and upwards.
Gad you mentioned the 24-105. I was thinking it may be a better kit lens mainly for the 4.0 at 24mm. I'll have to check out the weight and size.

Thanks i like to have one camera from every brand and the R8 come to my list, i'm thinking about the 50 or this zoom... or the other long zoom. Thanks for your views on this.
Super informative❤. I knew about HDR but never learned how to do it. Thank you. I'm sure there is a ideo out there showing us how to merge them in Lightroom or Photoshop. Thank you
@@Jason_Hermann Only yourself have put a review out there but it helped me make the decision to buy the R8 with the lense :) I am confident it will do everything I need it to for now!! Super helpful review so thanks again bro!!
Thank you for this informative video. I'm considering buying the R8 but still debating which lens should I get first. Which do you recommend between the 24-50mm and the 24-105mm in terms of image quality and low light performance ?
Do you also hear such delicate rattling from inside the lens, even with the camera turned on and stabilization turned on? For me, this sound intensifies as I approach the 50 mm setting.
I didn't notice it when on, but a very slight vibration is prolly the AF motor and/or the IS motor trying to maintain stability. Prolly harder at 50mm than 24, for the motor in there if I had to guess.
I really like the RF 24-240. It's my go to lens on the R8. Question on HDR. Why not just put the camera in HDR mode and let the camera process the picture?
Yeah, I want to try that lens, but have not had a chance yet... As far as your question, because the camera does a horrible job compared to doing it manually...
I'm planning on getting this R8 with the 24-105 mm for events photography and video, I am also planning to get a 50mm for close up and clean bucket photos, am I on the right path?
Well I'm not sure what you mean by close-up exactly and clean bucket photos? The 50mm is not a macro lens, but you can get about 12 inches away which is pretty close and yeah the 24-105mm is a great lens for everything really... The 50mm f/1.8 will get those really blurry backgrounds and subject separation if you want that!
Thinking of getting the R8 with the 24-105 f/4 L lens, do you think the quality will be an improvement over the kit lens? Will it out perform a PowerShot G1X Mark 3?
Yes 100% to both questions! I used the 24-105mm on the R6 Mark II and it's a very high quality lens. Way better than this one for example and the full frame R8 sensor is awesome!
I’m planning to get the Canon R8 but still I’m not sure which lenses should I’ll get. 35mm 1.8 macro or 500mm? Do I need both? I’ll mainly doing portrait, night pictures, landscape, macro and shooting some videos. Thanks in advance
These are actually comparable to the 18-55 apsc kit lenses. You can use these too up from 24 mm to 55 and they have less distortion. You probably will have some lying around. I use the 18-55 on my Nikon D 700 in full frame mode and I think it is a better lens than the 24 -50 from Nikon. You cannot go below 24 mm otherwise you will see vignetting.
I was about to buy just the R8 body (my first FF) and a prime lens, and then I saw it was only 20$ more expensive to get the body + kit lens (probably an error on the website I think), so yeah that was a no brainer ;) The lens will help me to decide what prime I want now (35mm or 50mm).
It wasn‘t a bug, kits are usually $200 cheaper due to you buying a whole kit. Considering they are harder to sell of to people that only need the body, they often get discounted and so the crazy part is I got the body with the lens for the same price as body only lol
Jason, thanks for this. Hey, question - when I first got this lens, it was in a "locked down"? position at the white dot just down from the 24mm mark. Can the lens be returned to this point for travel?? At first I got an error message stating I need to "set the lens to shooting position". It felt a little forced to move the zoom, but then, for whatever reason, it released and now moves from 24-50 without an issue, but was curious if there is a way to set it back to that more compact position.
For real estate I would go with a wider lens like for example the fairly affordable Canon RF 15-30mm Lens geni.us/zOaG or the more expensive better option in my opinion being the RF 14-35mm f/4 L Lens: geni.us/TurFMkC With that being said you can still use the kit lens for a lot, but small rooms are going to be a real challenge.
The image can still be corrected on the camera though after the fact in theory, and this lens is not made for a DSLR. It's an RF lens made for the new mirrorless cameras which do not have optical viewfinders. They are basically little TV's in there showing you what the sensor is seeing on a mirrorless camera.
lol, thanks! But just to be clear, the R-Line I have is not the badass one you might be thinking of ;) It's just above the base model, but I love the car! Honestly the best value for the dollar car for commuters in my opinion. I get 42mpg with that tiny 1.4 turbo and it has decent pep... the previous Jetta I had was a 1.8 turbo though and was way faster, but only got 34mpg. I have a 40 mile commute each way 5 days a week so trying to save on gas as much as possible.
It's really not that much different at the end of the day, and the 4mm extra width is pretty nice in my opinion. Mind you these are kit lenses we are talking about...
@@Jason_Hermann the sony is fully weather sealed, parfocal, has sonys latest linear motor and lighter than this lens. Plus the bokeh is 10 times better than this one but thats personal taste. Distortion is horrific, but I've seen similar on many Sony lenses over the years. The manufactures are choosing to make the lenses smaller and lighter and correcting lens flaws in camera. This makes the lenses cheaper, lighter weight, and smaller, but yeah they are not nearly as good optically. However, after the corrections are made the results are pretty darn good which is honestly remarkable. So it is what it is... The 24-105mm looks to be significantly better built, but I have no used it myself yet. Is the distortion as bad as this lens when shooting raw quality?
That's what I was looking for ! Thanks! think I'll go for the 24/105 and take a 35mm 1,8 for small factor /quality
