Official animated lyrics video for “Reasons To be Cheerful, Pt. 3” by Ian Dury & The Blockheads
Originally released as a single in July 1979 following the release of Ian Dury & The Blockheads first album Do It Yourself. The track reached number 3 in the UK chart and would go on to become one of Ian Dury & The Blockheads best known and loved recordings.
This video, created and directed by Zeroh Studio in collaboration with the Ian Dury Estate, is a celebration of the hit song and the spirit of the lyrics - an anthemic ode to joy!
The characters, shapes, textures and patterns you see in this video are all sourced from original drawings, illustrations and paintings, created by Ian between 1963 and 1970 during and after his time at the Royal College of Art and before he formed his first band, Kilburn and the High Roads in 1971.
The typeface used in the video to illustrate the words of the lyric was created by Zeroh by reworking lettering from one of Ian’s coloured pencil drawings. Other lettering is sourced from the Letraset sheets and stencil sets that Ian used in his illustrations.
The portrait photos of Ian were taken by Ian’s friend and rock photographer, Chris Gabrin who photographed Ian and his son Baxter for the iconic front cover of New Boots and Panties!! in 1977.

LYRICS:
(Why don’t you get back into bed, why don’t you get back into bed
Why don’t you get back into bed, why don’t you get back into bed ...)
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Some of Buddy Holly, the working folly, good golly Miss Molly and boats Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet, jump back in the alley, add nanny goats Eighteen- wheeler Scammels, Dominecker Camels, all other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy, being rather silly and porridge oats
A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it, you're welcome we can spare it, yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty, going on forty, no electric shocks
The juice of the carrot, the smile of a parrot, a little drop of claret, anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, the days when I ain't spotty, sitting on the potty, curing smallpox
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three, verse two
Health service glasses, gigolos and brasses, round or skinny bottoms
Taking Mum to Paris, lighting up the chalice, Wee Willy Harris Bantu
Stephen Biko, listening to Rico; Harpo, Groucho, Chico Cheddar cheese and pickle, the Vincent motorsickle, slap and tickle Woody Allen, Dali, Dmitri and Pasquale, Balabalabala and Volare
Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy, being in my nuddy
Saying okey dokey, sing-a-long-a Smokey, coming out of chokey
John Coltrane's soprano, Adi Celentano, Bonar Colleano
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, part three
Reasons to be cheerful, one, two, three
(But what about, but what about, but what about, but what about ... ?)
Yes, yes, dear, dear, perhaps next year or maybe even never in which case

No one better than ian dury have loved him for 40 years and still do r.i.p.ian ❤❤❤❤
If I could go back in time to have a night out with one British musician/all-round legend, it'd be Ian Dury. What a blast! An underrated talent and we have a duty to keep his legacy alive.
Me too! From Australia.
i was born in 1990 and i was shown his music by dad (aswell as led ze,deep purp, trex, pink floys etc) but my dad really like him an had a best of cd and the opener was what a waste..still to this day that song i think influences my taste in music so much..especially synth and bass stufff..ian durt in my eyes is a british institution an unfortunately never really got what as an artist he deserved
My number one reason not to be depressed. My go to!
Ian Dury - the people's bard. Classic song.
The sax break and the little piano bit(simply foookin magical).
you prolly dont care but does any of you know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Corey Stefan Instablaster :)
Yes, also love the guitar solo.
From Wikipedia - Saxophonist Davey Payne was upset about the financial disparities within Dury's band, so in order to placate him, Dury told co-writer Chaz Jankel to incorporate a sax solo part in the middle, which Payne could improvise and thus earn a share in the song
Unreal
Your right. Not heard this for years and the other day it came on on the site radio courtesy of BBC 6 music. The sax is just wonderful on this track.
"The juice of a carrot,
The smile of a parrot,
A little drop of claret"
Lol genius
I would argue this is a perfect song to wake up to
How about "wake up and make love with me"? 😂
Listening to this at 6.54am 🤣
I'd prefer a woman
Sat in a hospital bed 42 hrs after suffering a heart attack and surgery I have to agree.
Just did
Ian Dury, The Godfather of Rap Music. ; )
Man was a lyrical genius.....proper legend
Ian was an original, impossible to pigeon hole into a genre - part of his unique genius. I loved him and his music and still do, like any great artist, the guy knew stuff about how the human heart works. Thanks Ian, RIP
'Wee Willie Harris', one time pink haired rock n roller, and featured in the lyrics, died, aged 90, last month.
Im about to search Wee Willie Harris. Will this be one of the comments that opens me up to a new world of music?
as of 2:38 I just wished it would go on for ever, ugh the feeling, that sax and funk. Outrageous!
This has given me a reason to be cheerful. This video needs more views.
Wow ! Takes me back 89's best decade ..... Paradise Garage!!!!
All valid reasons to be cheerful
Brilliant tune. The coordination between lead and backing vocals is superb. And all this before rap even cam along. Hats off to Ian and the blockheads.
BS. Gil Scott-Heron.. The Last Poets..do your research... Original RAPPERS.. These Brothers came out in the 60's..So Ian Dury is NOT THE FIRST..Stop trying to take CREDIT..RAP..ROCK&ROLL.. CLASSICAL MUSIC (YEAH BEETHOVEN WAS BLACK) COUNTRY (RAY CHARLES .. Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music) The BLUES.. GOSPEL..R&B.. SOUL..FUNK..BLK PEOPLE INVENTED IT ALL 🤔🤔🤔.
agree, freaking great song. not really before rap, but rap was just coming into the mainstream. this came out the same year rapper's delight came out, and that was just the first commercial rap success.
@@laz0rama technically Fat Back Band's King Tim III (Personality Jock) is attributed as the first rap record released a few months (March 1979) before Rappers Delight. In fact Reasons to Be Cheerful (July 79) was released before Rappers Delight (Sept 79)
It's CRAP, not RAP!
@@sparkyk5736 You mean RAP with a silent C
I came here after digging through my memory for reasons to be cheerful right now.
Song was a blast then and still is.
Thank you Ian & not least The Blockheads.
I was reading Andrew Rawnsley's most recent column in _The Guardian_ ; he refers to "reasons to be fearful" and that rang the memory bell for me.
If you live in the US and are dismayed (terrified) about the results of the election, I encourage you to read Ben Rhodes's recent op-ed in the NYT; the last two paras give a few practical ideas about how to try to build a coalition that will stand behind governance that is not just democratic but that actually serves the 99%.
Ian was able to sneak in so many cleverisms and I hug my Olympians at every time I get a chance. HarpoGrouchoChico
The best instrumental break ever !!! Unbelievable ❣️❣️❣️
That sax makes me cry. Don't ask me why - it's probably the violent journey back to my childhood it inspires.
@@jp00349: We won't ask.
Great artwork video
How good is this ! To see the poetry in letters is stunning.
Thank you Ian and the blockheads ❤️
What a legacy. A true artist, and true gent (and a total hottie, I might cheekily add ;)). I'm glad he was on this planet when he was, though I wish I could have met him. This album meant so much to me as a kid - and it's still a reason to be cheerful to this day.
Tote'ly cheered me up 🙂
Thank you 🙏🏻
I just love this song so much!
Love the references to Ian's artwork! Such a fantastic song!
New Wave at its best. Great times with this in the mix during highschool.
So Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Superb 😊
The references, art & zip of the rhythm
100 years ahead of his time
Found one. Beep beep

I havn,t slept zz listening to this🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fantastic! Came out in College in 78 and was exposed to all this fantastic music!
That was pretty fucking amazing. The visuals completely lived up to the song. Thanks for posting it.
Those were some good days! Don't remember much but had a great time!
God bless the 80’s xx
Ian always made me happy
Reasons To Be Cheerful, Pt. 4..............Nov 26 is my B-day. Thanks for the gift ahead of time!
Happy birthday Holy Motors
Mind you, you don't look very well, I hope you took your ostelin x
@@hilarybee1797 Thank you for the B-day greeting! Btw, I hope you realize that's not my real photo. I could only dream I looked that good. Lol
Anyone else here after hearing this on the Sexy Beast series? Ian Dury & The Blockheads were seriously underrated- brilliant lyricist, fantastic band
First heard this gem on a Charles Paris audiobook. I revisit it whenever news is awful…brings me up every time!
Just made me cheerful
😁 This works just fine and dandy.
I remember this back in the days clubbing. They mixed this song with some house music 🎵
same here bro. david mancuso used to play this at the loft, and larry levan at the garage (where house really kind of gestated before frankie knuckles kind of "defined" the sound at the warehouse in chicago).
WELL DONE. Keep that incredible music alive, will ya! What a good job on this lyric video. DO IT YOURSELF - one of the greatest pop albums ever!
When I look at the imagery I'm reminded of disparate references. Soviet agitprop, Terry Gilliam. pinup cheesecake photos, 60's psychedelic art. Loved it along with a great song!! Also, Daisies by Vera Chytilova.
Nicely made clip! Love the collage-style à the 60's.
I wonder how much has been sampled from this track I can hear so many other tracks in this recording
Now that's some list!
Such a smashing song!! ✌️☺️
Always makes you smile
think i remember hearing this in germany 1977.
The song wasn't released until 1979.
July 79 😉
Ian Dury was a legend 🙌
Bought this in Woolworths in East Ham high street …..funny how a record is like an imprint in time…
“…lighting up the chalice”!
I’ve loved this song since childhood. The lyrics video is a work of art! As someone who makes music videos myself, I suspect that Ian would be absolutely chuffed with what you have done visually.
What a fantastic video! It has the feel of the 70s but the quality of today's graphics. And the song. It has to be one of the finest pop songs ever. Great lyrics to sing along to - at least if you get them right. I always heard that as 'peeing in my nuddy', which I think it the more amusing line. Great counterpoint singing between Ian and the band. And brilliant musicianship. We truly were spoilt growing up in the late 70s. At least for music, everything about Britain was falling apart!
And I see the ever reliable RUclips algorithm is recommending Squeeze Cool for Cats so I'm off there now :)
Love it, classic 🔥
I like this song, well done
❤🔥
Part 3 !!
Well, that was GOOD. :) Cheers!
Fantastic song, fantastic musicians, gorgeous jazz chords and spaced out guitar solos .
Seminal brilliance
My local radio station plays this. 🤗
Utter genius. The typography, the animation - and of course the inspired LYRICS!
Awesome.
Most excellent!!
If I Recall Correctly, Geddy Lee had this as one of his ten songs on Desert Island Discs.
Love it thank you too
Fantastic... well done to all involved.
Grandioso !
Been a while since I heard this! Still brilliant! ❤️❤️❤️
Einfach stark
Ian dury turns into Ronnie barker both amazing with word play😎
Superb work - thank you! It really cheered me up at the end of a tough week! ID&TB were a staple part of my teenage years and it's great to see some of his art incorporated here. I bought (and still have) this as a 12" green vinyl in 1979 and I still don't know what he meant by Dominecker Camel!
Oh to be a Blockhead
Στην λευκη με αγαπη αλεξανδρος 1991 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

❤
Great work, worthy of a great song. Blockheads forever!
Thanks In Advance...!!! ;)
🎉🎉🎉
What are parts 1, 2 and 3? Great song!
Great song, great video
Released in 1977, two years before Sugar Hill Gang's Rappers Delight
Released in July 1979 , b side Common as Muck was just as good with another mad sax solo
It was released in '79, not '77.
Definitely 1979!
Still one month earlier than the sugar hill gang 🤯
It just goes to show, rap was already a thing some time before it went mainstream.
Ace!!!
my favorite rap song
Who's on that guitar riff at the end? Wilko?? It's great.
I don't think it's Wilko. It's probably Johnny Turnbull.
Yep it's not Wilko
Wilko Johnson didn't join the Blockheads until about a year after this was recorded. The guitar riff is played by the original Blockheads guitarist, John Turnbull.
@@David-uq2uk It is Johnny Turnbull, I'm pretty sure. He always does that bit for live performances. Wilko didn't join until the following year after Chaz Jankel departed.
Its definitely not David Gilmore 😅🤣🤣
Yup
lol sax break those ladies there wow, benny lay off the LSD
Fluff lets play kiss chasing❤❤❤❤❤ 1,2,3 😊😊😊😊
Reminds me of Divine! Jungle Jezzablel!
