I frequently pose out my character down to the fingers on my first frame to establish the character. What are your ways of reminding yourself of the character's headspace?
That's one major danger that 3D has over 2D animation. In 2D you are forced to "invent" each frame, in 3D you are already given the character and its proportions, so it's tempting to just do "half a job" posing it. I always do rough planning sketches as if I was animating in 2D, because that is when most of the work is done, you just have to pose it according to your drawing. I love your videos JD ! Especially the FNA's & Analysis ones :D
First time I watched this video maybe it didn’t really sink in all that but while revisiting it I realised how much of it really happens. In fact I made the same mistake. You feel so powerful, almost like god, when you could control the rig and make it move to your wish. But once the high of that wears off then you realise that you are animating just the rig and not a character, a personality. You are not telling a story. I think initially almost everyone does this. This is really a great tip for FNA. Because by the time you realise it you have wasted so much of your valuable time towards being a good animator. So thank you.
Thanks a lot for this, the first pose is the trickiest for me! I guess its like the blank canvas, I've started working from the middle then going back as I wasn't sure how to set the mood at the beginning so this really helps.
Ah this was useful I normally pose it based on what the vid ref was doing but of course I can it to get him into character while I'm roughing out my blocking. I'll keep your tip in mind it set off a lightbulb.
Great tip JD, thanks! I have just realised if you are someone who makes a pencil test(even if super rough) or comes up with important poses on paper or in some software like Pencil or Krita; you don't run into this problem of rigid robotic pose!! Because you're always aiming for getting closer to the pose that you have in the test or paper.
I am at the blocking stage and suddenly RUclips gives me a notification about your new video. Which is totally awesome. by the way, I am using that same rig.
I love these FNA Fridays. I've learned so much from them, but there is truth to "ignorance is bliss". I've started watching Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and love the story but it is clear the animators need to start watching your channel. From the poses lacking emotion, to lack of asymmetry, to limbs not having weight that carries into the torso. I can't NOT see it when watching shows now. None of it is helped by their art style which feels like a non-committal bridge between 2D and 3D and not pushing the boundaries of either. So... Thank you? As painful as it might be to watch animation now, you've helped me develop an eye for technical critique which will help me when working on my own animations. Maybe in a future FNA Friday you can teach us how to turn that off as well.
really good tip! please if it's possible make series of videos animating a short body mechanics shot from blocking stage to polish, a high quality one(like pixar shots🙂); that would be cool
Somayeh Naghizadeh That has been the plan for a while, it’s just all a matter of time. I’ve been posting some of my older shots though. The Pigeon one has a 2nd part that I’ll post soon.
Great video and a great point! It’s a good way to just get started as well. Some times I get bogged down with getting into my shot. Out of curiosity, what camera do you use to shoot your videos?
I gave myself the assignment to make a character get up from the ground, and had originally tried from the tpose, and it just didn't feel right. I got frustrated and started to play around with ragdoll physics to entertain myself. When the character went splat on the ground, it made me think "that actually looks good." And I ended up making the character get up from that. Felt a lot more natural to animate from, in the way a blank paper can be hard to draw on for some. Guess my point is, it gave me some context for the character, more then just a arbortrary "get up" animation from nothing.
Hello, thank you so much for the review! I just downloaded the apollo rig and am having trouble with using the studio library. It doesnt seem to automatically load the poses or anything when I try to import the database, it says that the file is not recognized. Do you know how I can fix this? I am currently on Maya 2018!

Students usually don’t send me their Maya files but I do have a Posing FNA planned!
