- Here we go folks, a side by side comparison/demo/review of 4 popular Dunlop picks.
Gator 1.5mm
Carbon Fiber Jazz III
Ultex Jazz III
John Petrucci Signature Jazz III
Tested with my PRS CE-22 into my Mesa/Boogie Mark IV, through a very small Raven 1x12 cab with its stock "celestion" speaker. Recorded with my Zoom H1 Handy Recorder placed directly on the speaker. Enjoy, and please leave comments and questions, and subscribe!

Love this demo because of the PRS sounds and is played so enjoyably here.
Thank you :)
Another awesome video Lucas! I hope i get to see you at Experience PRS this year!
Ultex sound great, just ordered some JP to try out as well. Great video thanks for the comparison.
I've tried em all and still love the EJ jazz iii. To me the Eric Johnson J3 seems just a tad thinner and I like that.
Dude LOVE your shirt :D
Those jazz III's are so BRUTAL
Wow, the ultex is a lot brighter. I just ordered a bag of max grip carbon fiber. If I don't like them, I'll try the Petrucci ones which sounded awesome in your vid.
definitely going to grab some of these to try, currently using jazz 3 xl
the John petrucci pick sounded the best out of all,i go between those and the dunlop gator grip 1.14 mm and the ultex jazz
Totally subscribing this channel :D
Nice video!
The Carbon fiber pick does it for me sonically and feel wise. Super grippy, light and not too bright or dark. Sits perfect in the middle. The rest is up to your fingers. 🤘
I've wanted to try the Ultex and Petrucci Jazz III's. I've liked the tortex and XL ones so far.
Little funny tip: The Jazz 3 in carbon sound really good on a medium gain setting with a mid boost :)
green dunlop tortex triangles, with one of the points rounded off with shears to make it strum without digging in. Other two points for everything else. Use hole punch in middle to make a grip improving hole that doubles as a way to put it on a string or on a necklace.
I was wondering Lucas, what do you call/name the bridge on your guitar, i know tone-o-matic and Floyd rose, but what's yours called?
i have a ton of all different picks from fenders, dunlops etc but i always go back to the gator grip 1.14 (blue ones) im going to try the carbon fiber ones
After playing for many years I just use what feels good in my hand. I like bright colored picks that are easy to find IF I drop one on stage.
It's my impression maybe, but the sound with the JP jazz III feels more solid and rounded.
You should do another pick shoot out with some Animals as Leaders Jazz III picks.
awesome man, love your videos :) cheers
nice prs!!
How's the durability - ultex Vs. carbon fibre?
Love the Zelda t shirt
Hah, I hadn't even noticed I wasn't playing it quite right. Thanks youtube police!
:P
I stopped using gator grip. I find they lose a bunch of high ends and mid articulation in the tone because of the round tip. If only they made it in a jazz3 xl shape but gator grip.
It's easy stuff to sand, I take the dark green 1.5's and bring them down to slightly large Jazz3's. They come out pretty nice, if you take your time.
Which pick would you recommend for acoustic guitars/western guitars? Thank you in advance
+Andreas Hoppe I use medium thickness( between .7 and 1mm) Delrin nylon picks when playing my acoustic. I've also got a few with a nickel plated tip for really jangly western stuff.
My favourite all around acoustic pick though is my Dava Nylon grip tip.
jazz 3 the red ones and green gator grips!
I used to play and love the gator 1,5mm pick, incredible massive tone but they lack attack even if you sharpen them. Now I try to get used to the JPs but boy I'm gonna miss those green babies.
MrFuckingDeath Are you used to the JPs by now? They are the best for fast alternate picking by far. It's almost like they teleport through the string with no resistance.
Um yeah, but I'm waiting now a pack of Jazz III Ultex XL. They got the same edge which is the cool things about these picks - their edge, and the ultex material, but the XL are a little bit bigger which I prefer
Rusty Shackleford
The JPs are definitely incredible. Im so used to them that when I switch to a generic "free gift pick", I feel a delay and resistance in picking.
You have to exert alot more controlled force to get the pick sweeping compared to the Glassy JPs.
With a clean or distorted tone, the difference between the picks is really minimal. You should try different materials (metal, stone, plastic, etc.) and thicknesses to hear more sounds.
I've got the same guitar. Whale Blue CE 22.
I really doubt anyone could tell the difference between these in a blind test, especially with distortion. I say just play with whatever feels best in your hand and on the strings. I ultimately went with the carbon fiber jazz III due to the grip and matte finish.
Saw a video from Dunlop where he did Ultex and Tortex. Ultex are much more tight sounding at high gain
wich strings use in this video 0,009?
I use 11's on almost everything.
I play the carbon fiber jazz III right now and I love it, I honestly cant use anything else. Gotta try out that JP model though!
The only difference I heard was the time u said u messed up and the last time you played that last solo sounded a bit different... Maybe.
None of these picks can make this guitar, rig and playing sound bad. ☺
Ya, well, no offense to the video, but apart for describing the picks up close, the playing was useless. No one can tell a difference in the sound. But I am now going to order a few of the carbon fiber and possibly some petrucci signatures
Dude, please learn Finding my Way, right. Cool shoot out otherwise. Rock1
Good video. I am sorry to mention this but your amp looks like a garbage can to me!
The Gators suck! You cannot beat those Petrucci picks for fast alternate picking and sweep picking. NOTHING comes close and believe me I've tried just about everything.
