His phrasing and use of the Lydian Dominant mode was so much more apparent in the 90's. His note choices were so much more exotic with some chromatisicm. Today its mainly natural minor, Phyrigian, Egyptian minor 3 note per string 32nd note furries which tend to be more diatonic in nature. It's not bad but his playing today sounds more cliché. But his solo on The Looking Glass and Lost Not Forgotten seem to harken back to the days of old.
I had almost forgotten how phenomenal of a player Petrucci was/is. I grew up with this version of him, and lo and behold, he was miles better and more unique back then than the past 10+ years. Thank you for uploading! This was a trip down memory lane. A good one.
That's what I'm talkin bout! Hey was so fluid/phrase heavy/chromatic/experimental with the occasional jazz harmonies it was outta this world. This video is the perfect example of that. Nowadays, he's all about playing as fast as possible, which I still appreciate, but the cool note choice just isn't as prominent. BTW-I remember this jam was an interlude between songs during the Awake tour. When Jordan joined the band, I was hoping the experimentation would be elevated to another level
I think we can all agree that early Petrucci was like a monster Progressive/Fusion guitar player. Absolutely versatile with killer chops and phrases. I wish he does return to this style,I like what he does now but whenever I listen back to this I go like "Now this is John Petrucci". He seriously should consider getting his old side back with him stylistically and musically as well. Really hope he brings up this type of stuff in his new solo album, but it's just a hope I guess...
Agreed....he is a very different player than he used to be. Sure, he still has this kind of playing in him, and always will, its just not longer his base.
yes it is lol im glad someone knows slow motion an barf bag an gemini lol i remember when i first heard slow motion it was like 2 years ago i was speech less
You're probably right. That may be a USRG30 with the tension free neck. I used to work for Hoshino, and I believe that they made them at that time. -Phil
Really wish he would go back to Ibanez, or at least get rid of his new compressed Djent sound he has been moving to with extreme dropped tuning. Come back to a more natural sound with just the gain turned up.
Nope. DT played it live a fair amount on the I&M tour and JP used his rough demo (drum machine, easy keys) for NAMM and clinics back then. The live version with MP, JM ahd KM absolutely SLAYS this version.
Laney is part of the Hoshino family (Ibanez, Tama Drums, other bands) and especially back then JP would have used gear that was available @ NAMM as opposed to the effort & cost of flying out his own gear.
@MrKiller92 he plays just as cleanly, if not cleaner these days, but he uses a much more processed lead sound now, and shredding with the delay he uses makes it sound a wee bit sloppier than it actually is
That's actually why l liked DT with Derek on keys. *Not* coming from a heavy prog/instrumental background, he brought a Jazz/Fusion side to the band that was really interesting. On the "Mind Control" bootleg (1-24-95 Japan) they play a jazzy, funky outro to "Take The Time" that's by far the best "live improvisation" I've ever hear from them.
Yeah he said he wrote it on the back of an airplane barfbag on his way back from his honeymoon(I own a copy of Wild Stringdom where he demonstrates it lol)
DUDE HE LOOKS LIKE A TEENAGER OR SOMETHING HERE , AND STILL AWESOME ,tHE ONLY PETRUCCI I HAVE HEARD UNTIL NOW IS HIS NEW STUFF ( SUSPENDED ANIMATION IS THE FIRST ALBUM I EVER HEARD) BUT THIS IS JUST AWESOME!
Oh dude! His stuff before Suspended Animation is some of the best! Images and Words, Awake, Scenes from a Memory. 3 of the best if not THE best Dream Theater albums. Liquid Tension Experiment is awesome too. You can probably find clips from the live in Tokyo that looks a lot like this. Some of the jams on his instructional dvd Rock Discipline is a lot like this too.
Considering the fairly big change between Black Clouds going to Dramatic Turn, I think we are at least on the way back to a side of him more like this: more jazzy, progressive. I honestly think Portnoy was a big metal influence and Mangini is more a progressive flavor being added to the band. Obviously JP has a big metal side but Portnoy was the one that originally showed him and JMX metal, before they were more just progressive.
@HektorInfante Isn't that the truth. Its not hard btw to see that thats the guitar the JPM came from, but I dont know what model is is, is it a prototype?? Doesnt look like an ordinary RG, there isn't any middle single coils for one.
yes it is lol im glad someone knows slow motion an barf bag an gemini lol i remember when i first heard slow motion it was like 2 years ago i was speech less

I totally agree.
He is so amazing melodic! Extremly gifted guitar player!
He was such a unique guitarist back then. He still is now but his phrasing has changed a lot and he's a little more robotic.
there's no question his style was the best in these days.. the solo's on rock discipline are fantastic
man, i miss this kind of playing
his style was a bit more fusion back then
I wish he still played stuff like this..
That J Custom is gorgeous!
Dang! I was at NAMM that year and I missed this! I did get his autograph at the Ibanez booth though.
Damn i miss the old petrucci
seems like he had much more ideas then than he has nowadays...
man, i miss johns older days
God, where is this Petrucci now?
thumbs up if ud rather have old petrucci than new
how could he do dat stuffs in 90's... so insane, real guitar god

lets put it this way...we want another liquid tension experiment album!!!
It's finally on its way!
I haven't heard this in a while, I never noticed how Scenes From A Memory-esque some of these riffs are.
i agree sounds like beyond this life

This is gold.
I was 1 when this was filmed : /
I was 26 and he was my favourite guitar player! He's not anymore.
Agreed....he is a very different player than he used to be. Sure, he still has this kind of playing in him, and always will, its just not longer his base.
Man listen to the new record he is extremely melodic on that one! And yes this performance is killer!
This song is called
"The Hunk".
5 stars
i wish his solo cd was more like this stuff.
That's the one - I still have that catalog somewhere in my practice room. :D
yes it is lol im glad someone knows slow motion an barf bag an gemini lol i remember when i first heard slow motion it was like 2 years ago i was speech less
Dream Theater were already huge in 1994.
You're probably right. That may be a USRG30 with the tension free neck. I used to work for Hoshino, and I believe that they made them at that time.

Thanks for uploading this.
I think pretty everyone wants him to go back to this style
Really wish he would go back to Ibanez, or at least get rid of his new compressed Djent sound he has been moving to with extreme dropped tuning. Come back to a more natural sound with just the gain turned up.
this is John Petrucci the master who blow me away with his music, the current is just peanut butter jug.
Reminds me a bit of Overture 1928.
I always heard it was called Barfbag because he came up with it on a flight and wrote it on a barfbag.
agreed! Hope DT doesn't sell out...they're edging closer and closer to mainstream
wish he was still like that now.. :/
then again, hes making loads of money, now
Nope. DT played it live a fair amount on the I&M tour and JP used his rough demo (drum machine, easy keys) for NAMM and clinics back then. The live version with MP, JM ahd KM absolutely SLAYS this version.
true. it's quite heavy and really shreddy, but still amazing. he should really bring his old side out if he makes another solo record!
@NaveedIqbal
Yeah, it's called Barfbag. I remember reading he wrote it on his honeymoon. Hah.
Laney is part of the Hoshino family (Ibanez, Tama Drums, other bands) and especially back then JP would have used gear that was available @ NAMM as opposed to the effort & cost of flying out his own gear.
Look at his feathers man!
This guitar totally looks like the new premium line Ibanez guitars such as the 920qm model in pink
4:04 - 4:18 Petrucci:ism at its finest.
Me too but he has changed his style since the 90's.
@MrKiller92 he plays just as cleanly, if not cleaner these days, but he uses a much more processed lead sound now, and shredding with the delay he uses makes it sound a wee bit sloppier than it actually is
this just goes to show you, even petrucci started out somewhere.
Petrucci ftfw...

It is a song. I have it.

He's around 25-27 here I believe.
@dingle1 the day that i was born :P (sorry for my english)
@crisDAwog his solo album came out about 6 years ago...i'd say it's about time for some new stuff
RefUser :(
you own a small fortune there =)
lol I agree xD I had the same thought
He's not playing laney, you can see in the little rack next to him he has a mesa boogie triaxis. You can find pics of that rack online.
cheers bud

I think DT has become a very successful metal band, and for guys with kids and wives its hard to turn your back on what has made you so much bread.
@LordMurdad: That's "Lard, John Petrucci", the current peanut butter jug, if that's what you mean.
The song is called barfbag or at least thats what the tabs i found called it.
Most of LTE 1&2 are jam sessions, but they are songs now that they have been recorded. A lot of this video is not improvised and it's obvious.
song is called barfbag.
a lot of it is probably improvised but there is too much structure here to say its not a song.
me too... this is a great song! anyone know where i can find it and the other 2?
The song is called "Barfbag". Seriously. :P
He could put this on a new solo album and I wouldn't even care if it was old stuff. Was there ever a studio recording of this?
@HektorInfante Isn't that the truth. Its not hard btw to see that thats the guitar the JPM came from, but I dont know what model is is, is it a prototype?? Doesnt look like an ordinary RG, there isn't any middle single coils for one.
@RefUser comeon dude his solo album is fking incredible
its just the speaker cabinet, not the amp .
yeah... by Matthias?
The name is Barfbag
lol xD
@MrKiller92 its casue hes to beef now
@AngryLlamaz was
what guitar does he uses?
what's the song in the begining?
thumbnail looks like a robot face
it's called a jam session
why is he playing through a laney cab? o:
damage control, in the making!
damn this is NAMM? lol
nope they arent
seems to me he's improvising...it's not a song
@TheRealOzzie234
If you want a guy to amuse you, go to the circus. There are lots of clowns there.
Problem solved.
Barfbag
yes it is lol im glad someone knows slow motion an barf bag an gemini lol i remember when i first heard slow motion it was like 2 years ago i was speech less
