It sucks that the jazzy-prog influence is not as vibrant now in JP's playing :/ Awake has some of the most poignant solos while Falling into Infinity had some clever riffs
I've had this audio on my computer for quite some time and I was always wondering where it came from. I figured it was probably from some clinic or demonstration, but I didn't see NAMM coming. Thanks for the original source video, man.
Hey everyone, John can still play . Just saw him on his solo tour and he was really really good. . Go see him while you can

He already had the JMP bofore the awake, he alreay recorded the Images and Words with it...but I know he had another Ibanez signature before the Picasso ones, it even appeared on the catalog. Ibanez released an identical guitar as this one he is using here, when it comes to looks. It was shown at NAMM this year here is the model RG920 , its an RG Premium.
Its a NAMM gig... IE, Pro musicians promoting their sponsors. He was probably playing it to promote Ibanez guitars at the time. Even though its not his signature Picasso. Great tune thanks for posting this!@!@
@IcaroPaivaOfficial Actually that's incorrect, he only got the first picasso prototype, which wasn't even designed for him, for the I&W tour, the album was recorded with another guitar, and he had no ibanez signature before the picasso, was just a regular model. You can find all this information on his forum.
Yeah. I saw him live recently with Portnoy. The show was great, but his tone was incredibly harsh live and totally drowned in chorus. That and as I listened to the recordings I took after the excitement faded I realized that he was occasionally very, very sloppy. still a good show though and Mike was an absolute beast!
exactly this .. his tone was better, more raw and less processed, tasteful Prog with riffs that were prolific and more musical as opposed to 'too much heavy shit' style. 1992 - 2002 was that golden era. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that with the introduction of Train of Thought, they were trying to appeal to the kids for more lucrative sales instead of this shift from Prog/Art Rock to Prog Metal being a genuine personality change.
Here's some nerdy info for all you gear lovers, Petrucci is using an Axe-Fx Ultra going direct into the PA in this video!! Go and buy one now guys, they're awesome!!
pisses me off he never made an actual recording of this song. Closest you can get is the segments of it on the Rock discipline dvd at the beginning of each chapter
When petrucci was petrucci... Missing him
"Terminal Velocity" 25 years before their release.

I miss fusion petrucci so much
Ibanez makes the best shred guitars. The wizard necks are super fast
His tone with Ibanez was way better in my opinion...
Early JP was out of this world!
I agree, he sadly hasn’t aged particularly well
If I remember right, he called the song Gemini. I don't think it's been recorded anywhere. I think he plays it at clinics and whatnot.
10 years later there you go!!! Recorded and named gemini 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
what a great crunchy tone!
Back when he had serious chops
I've had this audio on my computer for quite some time and I was always wondering where it came from. I figured it was probably from some clinic or demonstration, but I didn't see NAMM coming. Thanks for the original source video, man.
What a lovely tone he used to have.

The song is "Gemini". :)

Thanks for this!
The JPM´s were done at least before ´94; he used them on Awake...
The John I like
@kalibsumter
he's had ibanez jpm since 1992, he's probably using another guitar just to show some new ibanez models at that time
This is a USRG30 from what it looks like, in Transparent Purple

Actually even before that, he used them already in Images And Words, first 7-String JPM was used on Awake, although those models never came out...
He used to be better than he is now, IMO. His playing was cleaner, his tone was better and he just played better, more musical phrases.

By 1991 he already had the JPMs.
I think this is actually 1994, and clips of this song are heard on his instructional dvd.
yes this was 1994. however the version of Gemini you hear on Rock Discipline is different
Right. I just mean that it's a similar song. Not this performance.
+Will Smyser I wish he'd released it in an official solo album
@@leeDs718 Your wish has been granted as of last year!
@@MetalheadNation and it's better than we all expected
mi ricorda le serate davanti alla ROCK DISCIPLINE
Damn- he’s going full Steve Vai with that tapping
a lot of the parst here can be heard in the dvd of the rock dicipline........ U.u
Very heavy Steve Morse influence here, but yet he makes it his own.
Wait isn't that gemini from the his album?? Had no idea it was that old
What model of guitar is this ?? why isn't he using his JPM models ??
Ibanez USRG30 (before Ibanez give a JPM100P1A and B)
When JP and DT were still progressive.
God they suck now. Have you heard recent shows on here,?
@albertmetal93 which part of the song did he play those jazz licks??
Looks to me to be a ibanez usrg30
Do you by any chance have or no what show it was that he used the footage from on his instructional video? Anyone know?????
I miss this era of john. Still great today, but less tasteful prog, too much heavy shit.

year 1996 is incorrect. it was 92 or maybe 93.
Gemini :D
I think that was the point.

This was filmed before they had the JPM models. He is playing an Ibanez in this video.

Mmmm 10 years later
weird solo!
sometimes the melody change so damn weird!
I don't like that much
but I love his band
Gemini
Lol apparently sarcasm is dead
Most of the commenters know how to be JP better than JP himself huh?
So many grown children out there.
Sad!
Lmao no u
definitely not a fender strat
haha no that's no a strat buddy
childish!
