You're not tripping at all, I interpreted it like that as well. And I'm sorry for the trauma you went through. I've been there as well, even once trapped inside of a coma for a month, dreaming hellacious dreams and not knowing what was real. I'm so glad James was able to communicate his pains through music, and I'm so glad that you opened up to share your experience as well. Many of us out here have similar experiences and it really helps when people open their hearts and reveal painful truths, it's cathartic and helps all who have goodness in their heart. Every quiver in your voice as you were relating that story kept me tearing up and relating with you. My heart goes out to you, and I appreciate the honest wonderful reactions you do. Continue being yourself, you are loved. :-)

I could tell that was hard for you. That couldn’t have been easy.
You may have had a vulnerability and a tremble in your voice, but I can tell that you’re a strong one and by being here and still rocking, you’re showing the world that you can take anything it throws at you.

When an artist makes a song and sends it out into the world, it is no longer their song. It belongs to you the listener, and whatever it means to you, however it touches you, is exactly how it is supposed to be.

James said the song was originally about crib death. Producer Bob Rock persuaded the band to make a song that was a little bit more consumer friendly. This music video was regularly on MTV for practically a year back in 92-93 and paved the way for a more expansive group of fans. The Black Album is controversial amongst many Metallica fans, but it marked a period where James’ lyrics started becoming a bit more introspective. This song was just an opening shot to gain attention from the record company, and what a great idea it was!

Agreed. Black Album was the last one they dropped that I liked. Too hard to deny the energy from tracks like Of Wolf & Man, and My Friend of Misery (my 2 favorites off the album.). And I was listening to Kill Em All on a cassette tape mailed from one of my pen pals in Cali. It's how it got around back in the day. Caught Master of Puppets opening tour & And Justice For All (with Queensryche opening doing all of Operation Mindcrime, shit was amazing night). But I don't blame Metallica. And I can accept I have grown throughout their career. And some tastes have changed. Nuclear Assault was in daily rotation for me and now I might pop it on when cleaning occasionally.

See in a civilized society, the one Metallica and I grew up, a proper response from you would have been "While I respect your opinion mine is different and here is why....." But wrong...nahhh. Consider it a life lesson for your fuckin waifu ass.

Lilly Jane, as a fellow trauma survivor and night terror sufferer, I admire your strength and openness. You are spot on about the deeper sub text of this song (in my opinion) and it is a theme often repeated through Metallica songs like Mama/ The Day Thst Never Comes/ The God That Failed/ The Unforgiven Trilogy/ Fade To Black (lyrics are way too close to the truth to be about a stolen guitar, and anyone who has been to that dark place knows this), and more.
I felt I had to comment when I saw your hands shaking with emotion Lilly Jane, mainly just to say I empathise. Trauma, loss and emotional pain affects everyone differently and no two experiences are exactly the same, and yet we all carry the unseen damage with us as we try to survive, with the same courage and grim determination. You are a survivor and a remarkable young lady. You're reactions and analysis prove you are intelligent and considered in your opinion and have a lovely personality. Lilly Jane, your Mom would definitely be very proud of the person you have become.💜

Lilly Jane - Since you just reacted to Enter Sandman, this would be a great time to listen to The Warning's recreation of the song they did for Metallica's Blacklist album last year. They were combined with Canadian pop singer Alessia Cara for the project. The Warning team also produced a great video to go along with the song. I think you will like it.

to me, the video is an amalgam of all the common childhood nightmares: falling / snakes in your bed / being chased by a scary truck, etc.
these were dreams we all had as kids.
adults have our own nightmares too --- missing a deadline at work / not being able to pay the bills / spouse leaving you for someone else / and the WORST OF ALL, anything bad happening to your kids
that's what makes this song so relatable. we all have fears.
our fears change as we get older, but it's a universal part of the human condition.

Megadeth would be another great band to look into. The guitarist and lead singer of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, was the original lead guitarist of Metallica before being booted during the bands move from California to New York to record their first Studio albums, Kill Them All. Although there was a ton of anger and animosity between them (especially from Dave), Both parties have since made up and for the most part are in good terms; and make up half of the Big 4 of Thrash Metal. Songs from Rust in Piece, Youthinasia, and Countdown to Extinction are usually considered their best, but older songs like In My Darkest Hour, Peace Sells, and the Conjuring are all excellent too. The begging bass line from Peace Sells was actually the intro to MTV News for many years.
Megadeth does tend to be faster and more technical versus Metallica, although I do like James Hetfield’s voice better.

This song it's about nightmares. I remember it's official video it was one of the first ones I saw on MTV back in 1991 when I started listening and watching music, also some other videos from INXS, Tears For Fears, Guns N' Roses, Queen, Rush, Van Halen, Madonna, Paula Abdul, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Megadeth, Anthrax, Billy Idol, Dire Straits, etc.

I am a huge Rush fan, and with a catalog spanning over 40 years you would have plenty to choose from.

Believe it, or not, we played this in my high school marching band one year. The low brass part (I played trombone) was so much fun!

you lived the dream. I was also in marching band and a trombone player too! I think it would be so cool to play Metallica on trombone!

I just happen to be watching RUclips and saw this and I just wanted to say after watching your review on Sandman, you couldn't have pegged it any better. You knew what the song was about and I've seen many people your age not even come close to describing what this was about. So sorry for both the loss of your mom and dad back then, you and James would be perfect friends because of the situations that you've both have gone through, and now the fact that he's gotten a divorce from his wife of 30 years, so much goes on in lives but everybody has to remember to power through it does get better in the end. Sorry such a long message, excellent review on Enter Sandman, I saw this video when it first out in 92 so that's how old I am, LOL. If you want a real good emotional song I suggest checking out the song nothing else matters

Lilly you had the best reaction to this song I have seen thusfar. Not many people have made the connection with James's personal life, but I think you got it all spot on and I think it's because you had similar tragedies in yours too. I'm sorry to hear of your losses, it did bring a tear to my eye listening to you open your heart.
You should listen to Metallicas All Nightmare Long, if you liked this then it's a must listen.

Chris Cornell, he has a big Catalog, he was the lead singer for Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog, Audioslave, and his solo stuff. Soundgarden is his main band, he's arguably the greatest male rock singer.

Lilly, you rock young lady, thanks for sharing your story with us. I can't imagine the pain you felt, not only physically, but mentally. God Bless you! I can tell you are a beautiful human being both inside and out. If I may recommend another great song that dives into James' past life. Check out The God that Failed. And don't forget Disposable Hero's. Keep on doing what you do. We love and support you!

You're prob spot on with your analysis and interpretation.
"The Unforgiven" is another song from this album that is for sure about Jame's bitterness towards his upbringing.

Metallica is not just music, it's a Language. And that Language speaks miles and miles. The Pioneers and Allfathers of Heavy Metal, and this their most famous track. I recommend more Metallica, for example: "One", "The Outlaw Torn", and my personal favorite, "The End Of The Line".
