Today’s bands “we sold out a stadium”
Metallic “that’s cute, we sold out a country”
Btw Metallica we’re opening for AC/DC here.
Very true
ACDC was headlining act, these two bands could sell out shows now,I can't think of two bands that could do that after 30 or 40 years playing
I'm 44 and when I saw this shit on TV I was like wtf did I just witness... they rocked the iron curtain to he core... million ++
Metallica sold out a continent
LMAOOOO...your comment wins the internet!!!
1.6 million people, 53 people died,
the “security” was the army.
The crowd was the horizon.
That concert was Monsters of Rock in Moscow,
Tushino airfield.
1,6 million people saw Metallica,
AC/DC, Black Crowes and Pantera.
That was a legendary MoR.
The entrance was free.
@@roverwaters3875 thanks for the facts
Its rumored that crowd surfers ended up in Ukraine.
Sadly, over 200 rapes too.
@@roverwaters3875 They lost count over 500,000, ask James Hetfield for further information, its widely reported to be over 1.6-3.5 million in attendance because the concert was for free.
@@roverwaters3875 there is literally a video of him saying it my dude, take it up with him
1.6 million people. Over 50 deaths. This year is a 40 anniversary. They still rocking.
Im hoping you mean 40 year anniversary for the band as a whole and not for the concert. Cause thats 30.
wasnt their 40 year anniversary already? like on october 28 i think
@@MrJameslupien yes,for the band
@@tugra_us I said this year.
Liar
Still to this day listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the only group to play on all 7 continents. And they did it in a 1 year period.
I reckon they haven’t play in antarctica
@@darecky8957 I reckon you're incorrect. They did play in Antarctica. To a group of about 120 scientists.
@@Prozak63 they did, but in a
lapse of judgement, chose to not play "Trapped Under Ice".
@@MegaAlan54321 LOL. Ride The Lightning...
That's actually pretty cool
this is one of the biggest concerts of all time it was right after the cold war ended and russia wanted to know more about the western cultures so they asked westen bands to come to moscow there was 1.6 million people in attendance and it was and still is one of the most important concerts of all time
Thank you Andrew!! This fact is the most important and typically the least "liked" or commented on in almost every reaction I've seen. It literally elevates the performance, the video and IMPORTANCE of these younger generations watching and reacting to it!!
@@roumifyouwnt2 metallica is my favorite band of all time and i wish i could have been there but it sucks that there was 16 deaths and over 100 rapes at that concert as well it turned out to be just like woodstock which is why they dont do woodstock anymore because of all the sexual assualts that took place
@@andrewvidmar3488 it really is sad. The joy on so many faces ruined the possibility for generations to share in a similar experience ruined by the few monsters who just can't let others have nice things. Just disgusting 💔🥺
I couldn't imagine how those assaulted and the families of those whose lives were sadly lost feel knowing that day was memorialized aswell. 💔
Facts 💯 nothing will ever top this concert
One thing to remember this was pre-internet. To answer your question yes that was the Russian Army plus.
Less than a year before this concert took place, it was technically illegal to play this type of music via tape, record or CD. Most of the people that went to this concert were there to release their feelings for this type of music for the first time ever in public.
Pawn Stars had a " bone record". Illegal Western music recorded on an x-ray.
@@davidbamer1426 What'd they give the person? $3?
@@mikeiswhite3 I can't remember how much, if anything. Just think if you got caught with it , the price you would've paid.
WRONG!!!
Не гони, слушали любую музыку на кассетах.
They lost count around 1.6 MILLION. It was a free concert and the first Heavy metal gig allowed in the USSR, so it was a massive deal - they used a military airbase just outside Moscow with the Army as security
In 1989 Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Motley Crue and Cinderella played at the Moscow music peace festival
Y'all need to see Creeping Death from this same concert. 1 million people chanting Die at one point. Goosebumps every time
creeping death from seattles better its more aggresive and faster
@@aaronwillis6179 I like both!
Don't forget the San Diego 92 concert as well!
Harvester of sorrow my all time fav metal moment!!! So raw
DIEEEE BY MY HAAAND🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
No one can whip a crowd into a frenzy like Metallica! When rock music dominated the radio- those were some fun times to say the least!
Harvester Of Sorrow from this show is badass. The army providing security and freaking out knowing they had no control. Y'all are doing great reacting.
In the aftermath of a failed coup, Russia's prez invited AC/DC to play a free show in a Moscow airfield in Sept. 1991... Metallica, The Black Crowes, and Pantera were the opening bands... 1.6 million Russians showed up to see all 4 bands play Russia for the 1st time.
Metallica were riding high on a #1 self-titled album (aka the 'black' album) all over the world... so they were in top form. Unfortunately, Russian military were on hand for security, and violence broke out during their set... It was out of control, but Metallica were powerless to stop it. By the end of their set, a number of people had been beaten to death... reportedly over 100 rapes... It was a shocking reality check for the band.
Imagine how scared a certain mid-level KGB officer in St Petersburg was in this moment. I swear Putin launched his plan to take over the country this day.
Your wrong Google it nobody died
@@nanook637 I did... and I also watched those who were at that set w/ Metallica verify those claims.
@@nanook637 *you're
This is what is called talking out of your butt. There were a few deaths, probably a few rapes. One can surmise that just from the crowd size. Outside of that, there is zero legitimate data backing up any numbers with any degree of accuracy. Zilch.
I watched this entire concert live on MTV back in 91 and I gotta say it's one of the best concerts I've ever seen
1.6 million people, many more people died at this concert than Travis’ but you have to remember the monumental size of the crowd too.
And this was over 3 days event not an hour and half.
I recently learned that the "50 people died" story is almost certainly a myth. No deaths were reported at the time, and I suspect the authorities would have publicized any deaths in order to discredit the West and its decadent music.
Dudes what's official reported and what happened is very different in Russia. If it makes them look bad, officially it didn't happen even if there's evidence for it happening.
@@roverwaters3875 I guess your right many reposts over two million. But they stopped counting at 1.6
@@roverwaters3875after seeing stadiums that hold over 100,000 and then looking at that crowd and you have the idiocy to say that I mean I guess teach their own but I sure in the hell don't believe you will leave the other reports goodbye
It was different times back then, you went for the love of music!
Nope. This concert wasn't about music. The Berlin Wall and communism had just happen and Russia opened to the West after decades of the Cold War. This was about freedom.
Now you need to do "Pantera-Domination live in moscow 1991" it was on the same show, as insane or even more insane as this one
yes yes yes !!!
Please
I upvote this. As good as Metallica is. Pantera stole this show. Highly agree. Watch Domination - Live in Moscow. You will not be disappointed and you will get to see one of the greatest shred sessions ever, Ontop of one of the most aggressive, hard hitting bands ever. If not the MOST hard hitting band ever.
I'd like more into their discography and I'd also look into their successors (In my opinion), Lamb of God. I'd start with one of their newest, The quarantine live addition of New Colossal Hate, So you can see them perform live and how good they are too.
@@pirateradio6429 you left off the heaviest breakdown in the history of humanity
@@deaconj3406 True. That's very accurate, Along with everything I already said. People really ought to see if they will like Pantera, Lamb of God, Jinjer, Killswitch Engage, etc. There are so many I could name.
I can only imagine the feeling of playing in front of that many people and feeding off that energy! This concert will probably never be duplicated as far as numbers.
Never.
Reported crowd of 1.6 million people but it could be more. One of the largest concerts ever.
@@roverwaters3875 nah bro true.
@@roverwaters3875 are you that dense. Your facts are taken from a Russian newspaper 3 days after the event as an accurate factual document on how many people turned up and what actual happened in the crowd? Are you serious lol?
You know Metallica was on fire when you have Russian military rockin with the crowd.
Flying American flags and even saw a confederate flag along with other nations. Nothing but love and rocking out.😎
It wasn't a US confederate flag. It was a Novorossiya flag. It's Russian.
Fuck the confederacy tho
@@noellinder99 Agreed.
I saw Metallica live in my home country South Africa and even though it rocked it was no where near as insane as this! that must've been one hell of an experience
Saw Metallica 17x in the 80's. Every album. Every Track. Metallica will always amaze you. Ive heard every album 300x and it will never be enough. Glad you homies discovered them 🤘🏼🤘🏼
lucky!!
A historical moment in Rock music history !!!!!! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
There's still people making their way home from this concert.
Do yourself a favor, go see Metallica live in concert, it will BLOW your mind. By far, the greatest live band of all time. These guys NEVER disappoint.
I saw them on nov 4th and at Rockville both nights best concerts I’ve been too
I've seen them 4 times and it got better every time
Metallica Creeping Death from the same show was prolly their best song of the day and i think the best live version of the song as well
Go ahead and watch "battery" live by Metallica, Seattle 1989. you wanna see some pure energy and raw talent.
No one hiding behind a keyboard, Auto tune, reverb or computer in that band.
Today's music regardless of the genre is lame at best. Very little talent, nothing original but worse I do not sense the passion for the music like artists in the past.
I agree with the hell out of this, the MOST blistering performance I have seen
@@Tricia1869 bullshit. I only hear that from people who put zero effort into finding good music.
Best song they ever did was “Nothing Else Matters” either video version or my favorite with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Worth the listen.
I second this! That was a great collaboration
Your comment is blasphemy. It's not even in their Top 30. Every single song on Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and Justice are better. And most of the Black album is better. However, to each their own. Rock on!
Michael Chemil, See, great minds do think alike…..To Each Their Own.
the opening symphonic... "The Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".....
I love when they film from behind the drummer too, so you can see all the energy 😁
Seen Metallica live at least a dozen times and they're always phenomenal. 🤘
Me too. Too young to experience this Metallica though....every single time i see this, it gives me chills. A less popular opinion maybe; i really love what Dave brought to the table. He goes in hard, every single time
If you want to react to that song that was in the beginning, the one from the movies, you should check out the live version performed by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It is the theme from the movie "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". It is definitely worth watching.
Amazing that this concert happened when it did. If you are old like me and know about the history between the USA and Russia until the late 80s.
imagine having in 2022 a 5 mill muilti fan, and ,rap,r&b,heavy metal getting together.
I think Rod Stewart in Moscow was 2.1 mil or something like that. Craziness..
You wanna see something fire? React to Metallica 1989 Seattle's concert! Do their song
" Master of Puppets " you'll be amazed!!!!
My pops used to like Metallica before they blew up and got real huge. He introduced his friends to them and of course they all loved the music. I was born in 1983 and used to jam out to Metallica on the way to kindergarten. Lol!
Pantera live in Moscow Is powerful
Over a million people, all different countries! People died at this concert!! No way for help to get to you….
😳😳😳
This is going to be FIRE 🔥🔥🔥Can't wait! 😍😎
This was back in USSR times only months before it collapsed. Some say they went to woodstock as a flex but this concert beats that hands down.
This was right after the wall came down and Rock music wasn't just snuck underground anymore , they were free to listen. For thousands this was the very first time to hear rock music from America. The helicopter were necessary for cooling and airflow.
I remember this like it was yesterday. It was massive!!!
now you need to watch pantera - domination from the same concert
10 died at the Travis Scott concert, with a crowd of 50,000
50 died at this Metallica Concert, with a crowd of 1,600,000+
my friend who was at this concert said that the news about the concert began to be told about a week in advance. He had already gone to bed, and his father was watching TV, and half asleep he heard the news about a rock concert in Moscow and quickly jumped out of bed
Back when there was real music. This is PURE rock!🤛
This is soft for Metallica. If you go back to their beginnings they were trash metal. It's only when they started to gain popularity that they softened.
*This is why we must fight AGAINST left wing communist oppression! This was our first taste of the west.* My parents met at a shop after this concert (took them 6 days to get home). They eventually moved to the US because of this concert.
Holy shit! I'd never even considered anything remotely of this caliber of importance to occur as a result of a concert. That's amazing.
Awesome story brother. Glad to have you here.
Left and Right it's the America propaganda for the ignorance of the people... Metal Music just open barriers and unifies Brothers ans sisters 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I saw Metallica on the Enter Sandman Tour. Fantastic concert!
What I loved about music of the 70s, 80s and some of the 90s was the music sounded even BETTER in concert. It was their voice as the played music, rocking their asses off🤣
It was the 2. concert of Rock and Heavy Metal in the Soviet Union. Bands Scorpions, Mötley Crüe, Cinderella and Skid Row flew to Moscow with Bon Jovi and Ozzy Osbourne. They was the first. 1989 russian Woodstock
Nice one.. now check out creeping death and harvester of sorrow from this same show
Now try Creeping death from the same concert
the intro song is Ennio Morricone's Ecstacy of gold
AC/DC were actually the headline act for this concert.
Great video! Insane crowd. Y’all should react to love hate love by Alice In Chains. The live version is so good. It’s the one in black and white. Also some more tool would be dope.
Don't k ow why I didnt recommend this before, but the band "NIGHTWISH" at Wacken 2013 live would definitely make a good reaction.
- storytime
- romanticide
- last ride of the day
We used to dance to this song in the disco dance clubs here in Montreal in the years 1996-2001 before I had my baby. Best times of our lives.
I'm a old white cowboy. THIS IS REAL METAL!
GOD BLESS YOU YOUNG AMERICANS!!!
That's an in insane fan base
You Absolutely need to react to "Creeping Death" from the same concert... infact it's the next song right after "Enter Sandman"
@Life with Recklezz In case your wondering, the name of the music that your hearing before Metallica appear on stage is called *"The Ecstasy of Gold"* by Ennio Morricone.
You are also correct about that piece of music appearing in a movie, it was called *"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"* staring Clint Eastwood.
Metallica usually has that piece of music playing before they appear on stage.
It was 1.6 million people there. Biggest concert ever I think. When they came on stage the crowd went bananas. People said the military and security was dancing lol they didn't have no other choice.
I was there, broken pelvis and crushed ankle and feet, but quite amazing, a celebration of the end of the cold war
OH WOW!! I've watched this video countless times & you're the first person I've come across that was actually THERE!! WOW!! WOW!! 😳 So sorry you were injured.
Great reaction. When the fall of the Soviet Union happened, those people were starving for things from Western society.
not anymore ,we have fallen so far
Cold War is over, let's be friends and party... Or maybe do cyber attacks instead? I think on this one, the moral high ground goes to Metallica and Pantera, not the actual paid politicians... That doesn't seem right.
@@CaptainNice the people should be friends , but more and more it seems our western civilization politicians/leaders dont want that ,, what people are beginning to realize slowly is its us thats the enemy of the world now , socialism and communism didnt lose to us they switched sides and took us over for their fascist dream
Just to let you two know, this concert was THE LARGEST AUDIENCE METALLICA EVER PLAYED IN FRONT OF; 1.6 MILLION (LET THAT WORD SINK IN A BIT) PEOPLE!! IT WAS HELD AT TUSHINO AIRFIELD- AN AIR FORCE BASE. The largest recorded attendance for a concert was in 1997, by an altogether different band. The number in attendance was 7 million people. But, in the same country, Russia 🇷🇺!! If you want to know the name of the band, just tell me and, I'll be glad to get that information for you two.
Peace!!
Metallica is the best metal band ever 🤘🤘🤘 Saw them first about 1985 and again and again over the years. This guys are awesome ! They are pure energy 🤘
Now I am almost 60 and still a metal head 🤘🤘🤘
My youngest granddaughter watched Metallica Videos with me and she said - granny, don't worry, if you are 70 or 80 I will build a black wheel chair for you and integrated huge speakers so it doesn't matter if you don't hear well anymore" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love this girl so much 💝🤘❣️🤘💝
You know it was a good concert when you have the Russian military doing security
Now you should do Creeping Death, same concert, it's badass! Also Pantera's Domination same concert!
Я был на этом КОНЦЕРТИЩЕ, это ЛУЧШИЙ концерт в моей жизни. Respect from Russia, Moscow city 🤝 🤘💥🤘💥
That was a HISTORIC event, not just another concert!
Cool reactions but I gotta say "cute couple alert" lol and now you guys are added to my other favorite couple reactors- Brad & Lex and The Rob Squad. Love to the baby too!
Check out Asia and BJ too!
yup, my 4 favs!
The "official" count was 1.6 million but the actual number is closer to 2 million-plus. They stopped counting when the free passes were exhausted, but hundreds of thousands more showed up.
Very nice guys. Cliff Burton wanted them to move up to SF because he didn't want to live in LA. Cliff died in a bus accident in Europe. Dave Mustaine got fired because they didn't get along. Jason Newsted became the next bass player, but he eventually tapped out. Robert Trujillo was the bassist for Suicidal Tendancies. I saw these dudes looking for tickets in the parking lot at a Metallica concert in SF.
in front of one and a half million people. understanding the significance of such an important concert is not a trivial matter in the face of an incredible event, which few times in the history of music has occurred with numbers of this type and above all also considering the socio-cultural context in which the concert was made in full post Soviet era, incredible !!!! Love it forever an EPIC event
Metallica is HUUUUGGGEEE!!!! A metallica concert is a once in a lifetime experience so people come from EVERYWHERE.
This was in 1991. Two years earlier, the USSR traded a portion of it's naval ships to Pepsi to get the rights to the soda extended. At that time, Pepsi became the sixth largest naval power in the world. At the end of this year (1991), the USSR (Soviet Union) collapsed.
You see this amazing crowd and think this has to be the biggest concert ever with 1.6 million people but no, not even close believe it or not the Rod Stewart free concert at Copacabana Beach (1994) had 3.5 Million people.
The song at the beginning before they started playing is "Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone from the Western movie "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"
Hell yeah, happy holidays to all of you too... remember " for whom the bell tolls, time matches on on on...." is also Flava 4 your 👂 , 🤘
I was there, i was 20 years old. Never heard that someone died there. There were fights with police and army guys, `cause they never been trained to interact with such big crowd, were frightened and nervous and started to beat everyone with rubber sticks. But there was a lot of drunken people and when the gig was finished, it looked like a battlefield, because of bodies, laying on the ground.
Some context here... this was 1991. The Soviet Union had just fallen... only four years earlier was the famous President Reagan "Mr. Gorbachev... tear down this wall" speech in Berlin. The Soviet Union went from a totalitarian ruled closed society to becoming somewhat free and open to the West - basically overnight. Even under that oppressive regime little bits of Americana leaked past the Iron Curtain... and that included Metallica. Metallica and the style of music they play was HATED and feared by the ruling class in the Soviet Union as it represented everything the ruling class tried to suppress. This concert was a generational level epic event. I was an intelligence analyst in the US Navy from 1985-1991 and I remember when this happened... it was unbelievable. Only thing I could compare it to in today's world would be if North Korea suddenly opened their borders and the real world poured in. And even that would be small compared to when the Eastern Block collapsed and the West flooded their cultures. There was no internet... no digital media... no 1000 channels of cable or satellite TV back then. Just a few pirate analog radio stations beaming Western music and culture past the Iron Curtain. That makes the scale of this event that much more impressive...
Pantera-Domination live in moscow 1991 Pantera actually showed what the soldiers were doing to keep people "safe"
We all came to see someone different than Metalica. Metalica just came on stage after we were all riled up already.
Legend has it people are still leaving the airfield today..😂🤘
The helicopter was trying to cool the fans down..
1.6 m ...
Can't believe it's 40 years ago...
The 1st major metal concert (Monsters of Rock) in the former USSR after the fall of the Berlin wall. These people had been waiting decades for this. 🤘
That intro song is "Ecstasy of Gold," and they play it at the beginning of all their shows.
Metal concerts are legit the safest concerts to go to. Everyone looks after each other at them. Especially in mosh pits.
Finally! Been waiting for you guys to react to this video! Thanks!
Ask any metalhead...we all have 1 rule: If someone falls down, you pick them up. We don't stomp on people! It applies to all concerts no matter who's playing or the location.
Back in the days right after the wall came down they got crowds like this for concerts alot this was the biggest but around a million was not unheard of
It was such a big concert, they had to use Tushino Airfield to accommodate the crowd. There are runways under that crowd.
This concert was after the collapse of USSR (Soviet Union)..Communist Russia. Yes, Russian soldiers were security even though some of them rocked out with the audience.
Insane. The footage from Pantera is awesome too. Incredible
My translator in Moscow in 1994 was there. He also successfully climbed Mt Everest, so is a pretty brave guy.
30 Years since Moscow's Monsters of Rock Remembering Russia's biggest-ever rock festival, featuring Metallica's all-time greatest performance and miraculously zero fatalities. On September 28, 1991, the Tushino Airfield in Moscow hosted the Monsters of Rock international music festival.
Watch the VH1 Behind The Music on Metallica. Whole thing here on youtube. One of their roadies talks about this event. He says "11 rapes, 200 dead". The Russian Army was the security, the helicopters were for security patrol and to circulate the air so people in the middle section didnt die from carbon monoxide poisoning. Pantera also played this concert, check out the song Domination.
This Moscow concert had Ozzy, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Motley Crew. Russia had never had a music concert before.
The opening music is The Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone. They've been using it since the mid-80s.
Funny you brought up Travis watching this. I saw Metallica the week after the Travis Scott fiasco in Daytona and they even made the statement, "We are not the Travis Scott people. Help the person next to you if they go down"!
Some concerts go down in history and the 1991 'Monsters of Rock' festival in Moscow was no exception. Known as one of the biggest concerts to ever take place, with a huge 1.6 million attendees, it marked the most momentous of performances for the heavy metal band Metallica. OTHER PERFORMERS TOO!!!
Metallica’s intro is the very theme from the good the bad and ugly. They come out to it at every concert to this day
I'm not a big Metallica fan, ,but ohhh wow, Enter Sandman is a classic that will never fade. And to do it that well in front of more than a million crazed Russians is a feat in and of itself.
