Good video Joe. I also was stopped at a US airport when I was traveling overseas, not Thailind, but they would not let me past the gate without an onward ticket. The clerk did point out you can just buy a ticket on the spot and all tickets are totally refundable within 24 hours. So just buy it and cancel after you get past the gate!! I will be there in December!
Yes, I understand needing a passport to travel, but even if a person has onward travel booked, they still can overstay. Perhaps signing a form that you are aware of the penalties of overstay would cover bases? The same form I sign each time I go to immigration. But, I don't make the rules. I'm just trying to warn folks that are planning to move over and get the correct visa, they may be asked for onward travel. Get a $50 rt to one of the many countries nearby. Why not see a new city anyhow. At least for two or three days.
Good discussion on visa and health insurance. I started getting Non-OA visa and realized I'm spending $1000ish either way so I'll probably pay agent and keep money is US. Also, with the new tax rule bring ovef 24k might bring up tax issues depending on how that works out. On health insurance, Kev-In-Thailand lost everything self insuring and couldn't sell house etc etc. Now Steady Eddy had good travel insurance and was saved by having good travel insurance.
The Non OA should be 1900b and 3800b to make it multiple entry. That's 180 bucks. You need health insurance either way. An agent will cost about 2500 for the Non o here. Get the Non OA, it's three easy forms. Spend the money you save on health insurance
I'm also from Vancouver, retired here in Bangkok. Have been dealing with Wise for awhile, which there is always a fee. Vancouver guy you talk about obviously doesn't get it.Anyways good vid as usual.
Yes, you are going to pay a fee one way or another. Nobody works for free. It's either marked clearly as a fee, or you get a slightly worse exchange rate as a fee. In the end, it's just a price of living abroad. I see guys get worked up over a $5 fee and they forget they pay $400 US for rent. I guess they would be happier back in Vancouver paying zero fee and $2500 to rent an apartment.
I like yours videos..but one correction...Vise is FDIC insured..it is partnerd with US bank..so you get US bank checking account and also at the moment they pay 4.3 % interest on your US dollars balance. .
Thanks for watching. I made that video a few weeks ago. I don't remember what I was saying about Visa. Maybe the Schwab Visa? I have been over here a few years now everything has changed. Same here in Thailand. 2 months ago you could get 37/1 US dollar. Soon it will drop to 29/1. That's a major difference in spending power on a $1500 Social Security check. If the plan was to send over 65,000b each month instead of depositing 800k because the rate is 4.5% in a US account. My plan was to move over money into a Thai checking account 800,000. I did so when it was 37/1 ($21,600) and another $25,000 spending cash when it was 36/1. Today that 800k will cost $26,600 at 30/1. That change happened in less than 2 months. That 4.3% won't last forever, unless eggs are $20 a dozen in five years. Then maybe you will get 4.6%. I also have the major part of my cash in a US federal retirement fund, Roth IRA and US CD's. Plus cash in US banks. But, having $21,600 wrapped up earning 1% to achieve my long term visa isn't the end of the world. If I had decided to move the money over today and I was just at immigration making that decision 30 hours ago, it would have cost me $6000 extra dollars at todays rate. Earning an extra $350 interest at 4.5% instead of 1% would take many years to offset that. Plus, that 4.5% will probably be back to 2% in a year or two. Economy types predict the 30/1 may be around most of 2024 and 2025. Let's hope they are wrong. In the end, it's just the cost of doing business. Even if things were even. In one's total portfolio, today I spend about $675 on rent, power, internet and cell. That was $575 when the baht was 37/1. In California my home insurance might have gone up 30% in one year. Grocery bill 50% in the past few years. So you have to look at the bottom line. I'm not sure I answered the Visa question. Shoot me a fresh comment if I missed the question. I don't often get the comment if you answer my comment. See ya later

My recent (June) experience with mobile...best to have a device that's paid off otherwise your us Carrier may not allow for a travel/temp sim > thankfully I did bring my backup that's all paid off & had no problem...was just a real pain juggling 2 devices...1 on the local network & the newer one only worked when I had wifi > other option is those global sims like Airlo or holafly... or whatever... there's a few where if you get them before you leave that's the only sim you'll need > of course be sure to confirm whatever Country's you're going to are covered by the travel sim.
I forgot to mention you need to have the device paid off. Or at least have permission for a new SIM. Many companies will allow a sim and "unlock" the phone at the 6 month mark of ownership. I don't recommend taking apart a brand new $1500 phone, but the guys at MBK can take care of the unlocking issue for $10. You probably blew the warranty, but if you moved over and forgot that step, they can fix the phone. Yes, it's possible to get sims online, but it's a little tech heavy. It's best to just arrive in say Malaysia, Thailand, etc.. All the phone companies will be at the airport. They will insert an electronic sim (esim) in 3 minutes and off you go. I think I spent 30 minutes doing it ahead of time for Indonesia. But, I wanted to see if I could do it. I could, and won't be doing it again. the good news is many phones can have up to 10 sims. I have 5 in my current phone. I'll be going back to all those countries at some point. Plus, many times it's just easier to get a travel package on my Thai phone. For about $15 I an get 5g of data for most countries for 10 days. So I rarely even use another sim. I just stay on my Thai (AIS) and use that internet. All my calls are on the LINE app. Also my text messages. That and hotel wifi for US wifi calling is all I need.
