    Very good information, Thanks for publishing this! I started a couple of years ago, refilling Coleman tanks with a small adapter. But I kept thinking about that warning that's printed right on the tanks, that they are not meant to be refilled. Just because you don't know of anyone having a problem doesn't mean it's never happened. Probably some of the people that it happened to aren't around to warn us ... Using Fuel Keg gives me some peace of mind, which I think is well worth the price. I use my grill a lot, so with the money I'm saving by not buying the Colemans, the Fuel Keg will pay for itself soon enough.

    • @evertmorse8518
      @evertmorse8518 2 месяца назад +2

      @@RocksNRuts4 - I worked in propane. Largest propane supplier. Tanks used to be filled to 90% years ago. The problem was this: If you fill a tank to 90% and then it gets exposed to heat, such as being in the sun, the tank builds pressure and could end up being at 100% (which is) over filled. And exactly why disposable tanks are not allowed to be transported in a car. Car temperatures can rise a heap in the summer. This is why tanks are now filled to 80%. If you stop filling when the vent starts spitting, the tank is not over filled. The spitter does it's duty at the 80% fill level. This is the safe filling level. Anyone who fills past this level, just doesn't understand why the 20% vapor space is there. Believe me. You don't ever want liquid propane coming to any household propane appliance. Btw, the reason tanks sitting outside are painted white is to minimize the pressure build up when the hot sun is bearing down on the tank.

    • @evertmorse8518
      @evertmorse8518 2 месяца назад

      @@TheMichiganFisherman- I really don't recommend filling disposable tanks. They are just too thin walled. Propane is stored in tanks at very high pressures. 100-200 PSI. A standard 20-pound propane tank at 70 degrees will have 145 psi internal pressure. That same tank on a 100-degree day will have 172 psi of pressure. Yes, you can refill disposable tanks but it's at your own risk. These tanks do rust inside. If the tank ruptures, you need to hope you are no where near when it does. I worked in the propane business. I just can't recommend refilling disposable tanks. I think the Fuel Keg is a very good refillable tank with all the safety features needed.

    I too was not aware the fuel keg purge valve could not be actvated without the refill device attached. I went with flame king when I bought my system, and in reality since the ONLY time the purge valve comes into play is when you refill the cylinder, I simply attach the allen wrench (used eith a flame king tank) to a small magnet I glued to the recharge stand where it remains readily at hand for the next use. My big preference for the flame king is the ease in which the refill device can be modified to refill the single use (coleman and others) cylinders as well. BOTH flame king and fuel keg are MUCH more practical in terms of cost than single use brands. AND...who hasn't needed to use a torch or other device using a 1 lb. cylinder, only to find it was low on fuel. You cross your fingers and "hope" you can finish the job before running out of fuel.. otherwise you have to stop what you're doing and drive however far to a store to get another cylinder to finish up. With the refillables, in as little as 5 minutes "you are back in business"!!!

    Fuelkegs have a flaw during the welding part. Sometimes the welders leave the beads inside the tank without cleaning them out. And they get stuck in the valve if you turn the tank upside down. I ordered 4 FuelKegs and only one of them didnt have the beads. You can shake them around to hear it. So i ordered 15 more of them to Home Depot so i can pick out 3 good ones. 10 of them were full of beads. One had only a small amount of beads, and 4 were perfect. I kept those 4. So now i have 5 perfect FuelKegs out of 19 ordered.

    I was gifted the fuel keg system, keg and all. I was excited. Set it up to fill the keg. Started the process , no air/gas was being pushed from the purge valve. Reconnected the keg to the filler valve about 3 times same result." No hissing". Changed filler bottles same thing. I was frustrated. I took a small pin punch and freed up the brass rod that opens the hole for tank to purge I could hear some gas escape. I manually turned the ring back and forth while using the punch to depress the rod in the tank and I guess it freed it up. I reconnected the keg, and it filled as it should. I haven't used the keg on an appliance yet. I anxious to see if it refills ok. I have several Mr Heater products all have worked good. I was disappointed with keg system "out of the box" it may wind up being fine. the jury is still out.

    It's really simple with the Coleman tanks,
    if you don't trust them then don't do it very often,
    even if you fill it once,
    or twice you're still saving a buttload of money, as long as you're purging them and weighing them to make sure you're putting the proper amount inside you should have no issue then after you fill it the second time throw it away when it's done filling them once or twice and then disposing of them is absolutely not going to hurt anything as long as you do it right.

    I refilled the Coleman "non-refillable" thanks for over six years. I simply got tired of the fact that they never refill all the way. And, if you try any tricks to get them to refill more fully, THAT'S when you can get into trouble. I causes a whole set of five to swell quite a bit. I had to take them outside and empty them as fast as possible because the looked as if they might burst at any second.

Generally I cook over a biomass stove when solo camping so while the benefits of the fuel keg are obvious, I’m not sure it’s worth the cost of entry.
    .
    How necessary is the fill/purge process on the green Coleman bottles? Since the key concern seems to be overfilling them, especially if you fill them cold and then the weather warms up. Wouldn’t filling without purging prevent any possible overpressure scenarios? Or can you not even partially fill them without purging?

    • @TheMichiganFisherman

    Hey Bryan! What are your suggestions for storage of the Coleman 1 lb propane cans, in a basement? I've no storage units outdoors so I have many full ones downstairs in a area completely opposite my oil burner. And is it possible for the green tanks to leak if not used yet? Would it be wise to recap them all with the metal caps?

    • @TheMichiganFisherman
      @TheMichiganFisherman  3 месяца назад

      I would recap them with the metal caps in the description. They’re pretty cheap.
      As far as indoor storage, that is never recommended. I used to do it but once I realized that was a bad idea I started storing them in my garage.
      If you have no way to store them, I’d at least get a cheap Rubbermaid container or something and store them outside.
      Brand new green cans are very unlikely to leak if stored properly. I’ve never heard of one leaking.

    Well I think the fill speed is not a good measurement. It depends how full the 20# tank is. The more full the more pressure the faster it fills. Get down to a near empty 20# tank the slower it refills.
    I'm surprised there were no complaints regarding the black O ring and white sleeve in the keg coming off and sticking on the fill arm valves. I had and still have 2 tanks of 4 that those O rings keep coming off. I called Mr Heater customer service and they sent me 3 replacement kits, and told me to throw the old ones away.
