    This feels like going back to a time where it was just you sipping wine and telling stories, Oz. That was my favourite era, personally, and this definitely a return to that but with much higher production quality! I love your storytelling, and I'm really looking forward to going on this journey with you again. Fight team!

    I was just talking about this with someone, I'm always educating the fighters at my gym. I may be the odd one, but I find it kinda odd how many of the guys who dedicate their lives to the sport know so little about it. Then again I got this channel to thank for pointing me into the right directions.

    Love the fact that you addressed the George Stevenson issue, if only in passing. The December 28th 1681 issue of the Protestant Mercury is available at an online newspaper archive which you can see it for free with a seven day free trial. Sadly when I tried to link to the particular website my comment got deleted, but I'm sure you could find it with a quick search.
    I disagree with some of what you're saying about ground fighting in the pre Broughton days, but I'll have to gather up my notes to back up what I'm saying, so I'll post about that later. Anyway good stuff as always.
    FIGHT TEAM!

    • @EnglishMartialArts
      @EnglishMartialArts  2 года назад

      The ground fighting isn't an issue I'm willing to drop just yet, but I'm always open to hearing a coherent argument. I'll try to find the archive in question, I did have a look but it was late and I obviously missed it.
      Drop me an email if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to explore some of the things you have mentioned in a little more detail. .

    I enjoyed this throwback video and I have a suggestion for a parallel video to the Jack Broughton story.
    Right now I’m looking at a piece of boxing memorabilia; an autographed photo card of Tommy Collins, an American featherweight boxer of the 1950s who had an impressive knockout record.
    He was also the loser of the “Boston Massacre” of 1953 against lightweight Jimmy Carter. He was knocked down ten times, and so badly beaten there was an outcry for reform. At least one reform, the three knockdown rule, was put in place. I’d like to see a video from you on that fight, Tommy Collins, and the parallel evolution of rules on this side of the pond.
    I love your history videos.

    Really enjoy these videos, mate. (Fight team, naturally.) I have a book somewhere that I can't quite recall the name of, it was something like Boxiana? In any case, it was all about pugilism, and had many incredible rundowns of classic bouts, and gives a lot of information about many of the top (and lesser well known) fighters, spanning quite a period of history.

    • @EnglishMartialArts
      @EnglishMartialArts  2 года назад +3

      Sounds like Boxiana by Pearce Egan. He was essentially the first sports journalist. The Folio Society published an abridged version of his work in the 70s, is yours a hardback in a box?

    • @izzygarcialionibabaloipici6293
      @izzygarcialionibabaloipici6293 2 года назад +1

      @@EnglishMartialArts those techniques seem really useful, you could wiff a hook and come back with the hammer or back fist. On the ground in someones guard, if you apply a can opener your opponents entire face and head is vulnerable to hammerfists. I want to see more of them and i will work to use them in competition

    • @andrewk.5575
      @andrewk.5575 2 года назад +1

      If you take a look at the "jab" of certain boxers who used cross-armed guards like Gene Fullmer and Archie Moore, you can make an argument that the hammerfist never entirely disappeared. Then again, once your into the "dirty tactics" realm of boxing you can argue that trips, headbutts, elbows, and open hand strikes are still around too....

    Dude I love your channel.👊 This type of pugilistic education and interesting commentary enriches my own background and understanding and is much appreciated.
    I fought Original MMA in the 90's wear anything goes with 4-ounce Harbinger fingerless bag gloves were used. It was MMA but at that time you were allowed to do anything except; (fish hook, eye gouge or groin shots)... Techniques like soccer kicking or kneeing a downed fighter in the head, head slams, head butts, tailbone shots, throat shots, and many other types of potential maming techniques eventually we're removed for safety and public opinion to become a legitimate sport in the USA. I personally wanted to punch and kick on my feet or on the ground while kickboxing I looked to slow movement and while wrestling I used position to control for ground/n/pound or submission finishing.
    All precursors to modern mma. 👊💀

This is the kind of stuff that I personally find the most interesting (along with the tales of greatness, Smackanory, etc.) I understand that this might not be the most algorithmically rewarding type of content but it is what I'm most interested in.
