I thought they were going to have to pause and reroute the power cable to a source on the other side of the road, then I saw the gen-set in the container following behind. Great video of something most people will never get to see.

Hello my name is Nick Churon from Churon Co www.churonco.com we rebuild all types of gear pinions like crowd pinions and shipper shafts for the P&H 2100 2300 2800 and 4100
THAT is a SHOVEL! I was wondering if had it's own power plant but then I saw the pigtail. NICE rig and I'd have to have oxygen to run that thing. GOOD job, Pal!
Shovel is running on old conveyor belt where it crosses the road. The road is built up extra heavy in that section too. The truck following is a gen set to power the shovel while it's moving. What did they put down over the tracks? There are two tunnels in the background, one for a county road and one for a railroad. The haul trucks run over them.
That was MINT! Loved how across the road, the digger stopped to execute a small right turn and you can hear the SeaCan power unit turbo spool up to meet the energy demand for the turn.
I would love to see a straight Diesel powered machine, not a Diesel electric like this one. I don't know if they build any Diesel only powered ones in this size. I'm guess you would probably need a 3,000-4,000 horsepower engine. They do make Diesels that big also.
@@scottmcquarrie7295 I think the big reason that these giant shovels and draglines are electric is that a diesel powered version would require a huge diesel fuel tank in addition to the engines and their attending systems. That would make the house even bigger than it is already and then you have the problem of servicing those engines in that space.
@@BlackPill-pu4vi all feasible reasons for electric power, but I bet you can engineer a huge Diesel powered shovel and overcome all those issues if need be. Ocean liners run big Diesel engines so I'm sure it could be done.

That's obviously a huge machine and this move is equally obviously taking quite a long time. I'm curious if that is about max speed for a beast this size, or the operator taking it slow and easy, or maybe the genset just can't make enough watts to go any faster?
Unlike a lot of smaller machines which have oil sealed pins in the tracks, these are all dry pins, so it's metal on metal all the time. They sound a lot worse than it really is.
Oh and one more thing there is a vintage caterpillar d7g at brookside equipment sales in Phillipston Massachusetts can you do a documentary about the d7g for your next video pretty please ?
yea.. my desk job sucks.. edit: okay this is a really ignorant question but what are the interiors of these like? do they have stuff like latrines or a storage room, stuff like that or is it all business?
The newest machines have optional toilets on board, however on older shovels like this, there is no option for a toilet. That's why we have garbage cans! Our shovels all have fridges, microwaves, toasters and toaster ovens, water coolers and coffee pots in the cab.
Not necessarily it depends on the pit floor it's digging on and how rough the operator is on the machine. The pads can break just like anything else on the shovel
tooez90 all of the shovels I’ve ever seen move quite a bit from pit to pit, forwards and backwards, left to right, right to left, and they make a big mess for the trucks to have to turn around and back up through. Even a electric shovel like this one moves around quite a bit during each shift even if it’s not as much as a diesel shovel.
all the while hes on clean raods the tracks wil look a little loose, when he gets back in the mine the track chains will get loose shale, stones, rocks and mud and dirt in them and they will tighten up,too tight in the clean and they will become too tight in the rough,
To a certain degree that's correct. However, the idlers are out all the way, with no more adjustment. A track pad needs to be removed, so in this case, they are probably waiting until after the move, so as not to have to adjust again sooner than normal due to the excessive wear from the long walk.
So what brings you to Hibbing!? Ha i watch alot of your videos, also have done alot of work at Hibbing tac. Its nice to see these older rigs still makeing nothing but money!
The popping and screeching of those tracks sure brought back memories of the Marion and Bucyrus shovels I worked around in the 70's and 80's!

Yep. Big shovels like this are normally moved with a mobile generator. Thanks!

@martymartin2894 the big machines like the one in the video are powered by an external electricity source instead of having their own powerplant.
