As a child, I could watch heavy equipment work for hours and hours. I'm 73 now, just got a compact backhoe... Finally, I'm an operator... I couldn't be happier...
There was a very rare 1901 Thew Type "O" at the bottom of an artificial lake, where it had been since it got stuck in the mud after being used to build the dam that created the lake back in 1925. When the dam broke a couple of years ago, after a torrential rain caused severe flooding, the lake drained and the Thew was exposed once again. Someone salvaged it and is in the process of restoring it to working condition
Yep Beaverton is right on my drive to the Wooden Shoe from down by Howell. I live in Hartland, Michigan and I drove over the Wixom Lake bridge on M-30 100 times going to the Wooden Shoe. I had to alter my course a couple years ago, after the dam broke. ben/ michigan
I grew up with a book called "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel." It is about the decline of the steam shovel. I have been reading this book to my kids and they asked to see a picture of a real steam shovel. I'm so happy that there are videos of them in operation. This is the first time I have ever seen them functioning.
It was the first time I learned that an excavator powered by a steam engine existed! It's so unique and wonderful that the operator is alerting people to the surroundings with a steam whistle before scooping up the soil with the excavator and rotating the arm with the entire upper half of the body.❤
I just found this video and was about to comment on Mike Mulligan! My favorite book when was a kid! Seeing this video instantly brought the long time dormant memory alive! Katy and the big snow was another favorite around same time as Mike Mulligan book😊
Yes - I read it too, over here in GB. Its amazing how many people say that book was a childhood staple, and the fond memories it holds for them. Thank you, the lady who wrote it.
It is very pleasant to look at the work of equipment from the past. I am once again convinced of the genius of scientists and inventors. It's also interesting: do those who looked at least for a second have any thoughts about the work of workers on these machines? Yes, undoubtedly, physical labor was facilitated thousands of times, but at the same time, how hellish was the work on such mechanisms for stokers and operators?! How long was the working day? No unions and no vacations. I'm not talking about health insurance at all. It seems to me that the characters of this video are primarily people, ordinary workers of that time.
I was driving through nederland colorado earlier today , and a verry beautiful bucyrus 50-b suits in the center of the town, first time I've ever seen one of these machines. Amazing tool
Fascinating compilation - thank you for putting it together. I just love these old machines with their robust simplicity. The H B Lee Erie lives not far from me, and I see her regularly.
There is a major error in the video's text. The steam shovels shown do not have a hydraulic system and instead directly uses the steam to power three steam engines. One at the base to move the crane allowing the shovel to move up and down and another moving the rack and pinion so the shove can move closer or further away and a small one at the base to rotate and drive it around.
Yes they can dig in the ground. Just like what was mentioned above, all of these shovels have been donated to a museum (WMSTR) so as antiques their main job now is to play in the “sand box” and put on a show for guests. Fun fact the 50-B shown here was my grandfathers, and up until we restored the Kentuckian shovel it was the largest operating steam shovel left!

@@Andrew-qf9phdude I know the guy fixing it! Beaverton is my old home!
Cool

Back when they arrived steamshovels were a marvel and time saver
Some of the coolest machines I’ve ever seen !
Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel . What a great childhood memory. Its a book 📖 . Do any of you know what a 📖 book is ?

We read that book to our 3 year old almost daily. It's a household favorite.
Isnt that one of those things you use to prop up the Davenport when a leg breaks off?

And the last I knew, its still in publication, after so many years! Both Mike Mulligan, and Katie, were the go to books of my childhood! Thank you 😇 😊!
Radiation MATTERS 😂😂😂❤❤❤ Mitra holding my shovel right up the road here in NH.

Extraordinary excavator construction in the past before the birth of the hydraulic excavator 👍👍

These need to be a part of any future MAD MAX sequels or prequels.
Thanks for sharing this awesome footage, it's great that people are maintaining and operating this equipment. ✌️🇺🇲

Cool equipment
Sehr schön.
I had only seen stills and needed to see one in action. I found some of them weirdly spooky idkw.
i am old enough to remember this (hidraulicless) mech arm arrangement to be used in diesel powered shovels.
Damn these things are cool
Clasick machine...😍😍😃😃😃
There’s also a steam crane in the background
Pretty awesome
Thats job security. Picking up a load and dumping it in the same pile
the guy on the orange marion is 2 blocking the hell out of it, i hope 2 hell he don't call his self a shovel operator...
Several of the Steam Shovels in the video are Marion ( Mary Anne) like the kids story!
Yes
I never knew that 'Mary Anne' was a Marion Steam Shovel, but I appreciate the play on words🙂
They should be loading some steam lorries!

@8:13 I wouldn’t recommend staying in the driver seat whilst being loaded, not even when it’s done by a modern hydraulic excavator.
You'll. Be right mate, professional. Operator lol
Do steam shovels "snort"?
5:12
Hydraulics? Where ? Everyone is a cable system. Check Brain before posting.
Where's Mike Mulligan...???
🇲🇨👍👍👍🇲🇨
Já lidei com dragline bucyrus 22 b.
I note none of them are digging into the ground. Just loose dirt piles. Can they not do that, due to the pulleys?
I think because these are museum exhibits, they are old and now they don’t need to dig into the ground
Can a steam shovel dig into the ground like a modern excavator?
