Only 3 issues I’ve had to resolve over the past 11 years.. motor mount, steering wheel coupler and alternator these issues were resolved 2 years ago at 200k no issues since🙏

I guess I got lucky because I bought a 2013 sonata when it had 30000 miles on it and just traded it in for at 108000 miles for a 2021 sonata and for those 78000 mile the biggest problem I had was replacing the alternator. Sonata is a very well made car in my opinion. I recommend it to anyone

I bought a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. I was also one of the millions of owners that experienced engine failure due to the rod bearings being thrown and seizing the engine. Without going through the 4yr. nightmare, let's just say I would never, ever own another Hyundai/Kia vehicle again. I'm still fighting it out with them to reimburse me for the $10,000+ I had to shell out for an engine replacement that took them a 1yr 1/2 to get in. And, on top of that I found out I didn't get a new engine, they simply repaired the part of the engine affected (I'm no mechanic, but have been told by those in the know that I could have gotten a new create motor). Hyundai lost a class action lawsuit in 2016 that affected over 2 million cars, and my VIN finally was added to the vehicles two months ago. All this to say, why didn't that problem make to your top 5 problems with the Sonata Sedan's Hybrid or not?

    • @kristine432
      @kristine432 3 года назад +3

I fought 6 years to have my engine replaced only for them to recall the motor.
Of course there is no resolution to that problem and the class action lawsuits are a joke and I've never participated in them as far as I'm concerned the only way to resolve the matter is to provide us with a working vehicle period!

I have a 2012 and I first experienced my back taillights going out.
Then one day I was in the freeway and I was going 70 mph. All of a sudden my car dropped down to 50mph in the fast lane. I quickly got over to the right lane and my car speed up to 70mph without me being on the gas peddle. I was scared and luckily my job was right around the corner. I had to have my car towed home. Hyundai will never have to worry about me being a customer ever again.

I have a 2011 Sonata GLS, currently with 198k miles on the dash. Only major problems- got an engine replacement by Hyundai under the recall at 141k miles when the original one locked up. Then had a transmission slipping at 160k(got it rebuilt). Mine was a used 3 owner car and had not been taken care of before I bought it. It’s been a solid vehicle and comparable to a typical Accord/Camry of the time. I’d recommend one despite of how people are trash talking Hyundai/KIA brand which has come a long way especially since 2011’s redesign.
I’ve been to 6 different states on road trips without a single problem and my Sonata had 106k miles when I bought it so I’ve put almost 100k on it already since 2015.

Mine has been a totally solid workhorse too. I think mine and yours are a rarity because I hear so many issues. Replacing the fuel pump assy at 180 miles (long overdue) but everything else is fine.
My steering wheel controls for the radio don't work anymore and I sometimes have to cancel the cruise before the set button will engage, but mechanically the car is sound.
However I can't bring myself to trust Hyundai/Kia again for my next car, with all the recalls across their brand. Engine fires, etc. Don't have much faith in their build quality overall. Looking at Toyota or Honda for my next vehicle!
I did get a new engine under warranty at 112k miles though and my Sonata has really been out through the wringer. Hopefully it's a long way off, but I am concerned that there's not much life beyond 200,000 miles.

Brake pedal stopper!! I didn’t even realize my brake lights were starting to stay on till saw it with my own eyes, but noticed the hesitation on acceleration, would just drop to like idle at full throttle no check engine lights… was that black plastic plug on brake pedal had worn a little hole allowing to switch to extend out, fixed it back to normal 5 mins flat, pack of them for 5 bucks… 😎👍🏻

I have a 2014 Sonata…two bad driver side seat switches, one steering box star grommet, which I replaced for $7…and one engine replacement due to a seized crank…covered under warranty/factory recall at no cost. 140K miles and I’ll also be replacing at least one of the front axles…bad CVS joint. I’ll do it myself so price wise, not too bad. I’m also on my second set of brakes/rotors all around. We purchased our Sonata in 2013, so it’ll be on the road 9 years this November. All in all, not bad maintenance wise.
If you drive your car….parts will wear out…don’t expect it to be maintenance free over it’s lifetime.

I had a 2011 I drove to 150k+ miles and never had any notable problems. I traded it for a 2014 Sonata that I STILL drive with 260k+ miles on it. And it wasn’t until the past 5-10k miles that I experienced anything notable on it. I had to replace the neutral safety switch, and as of about 250k miles, it has been going through oil pretty quickly (and no, not due to a leak).

I would stay away from 11+12s lots of problems 2.4 engines may be a safer buy an if your tail lights keep going out switch to led bulbs . Always super lube the engine with a dura lube or motor kote for protection an less wear on the dryer parts of the engine. Motor kote can also go in transmission and power steering fluid it’s a great product keep you on the road with cooler operating which is less resistance on your cars day to day operations. Also go with a premium battery for less electrical issues.Hope this helps someone.

I bought a very clean 2013 Sonata SE about 1 year ago. It had 75,000 miles on it. It now has 83,000. Bulbs in lights constantly go out. Front axels started making noise when turning, so i have to replace them. Stereo just recently went haywire and randomly goes from radio to gps map and it wont even turn off. Every time i turn around, something new is going wrong on that car. Maybe its freaky bad luck, but based on my experience, I'll never own another Hyundai period.

Limited to Hyundai Sonata manufactured in Alabama on 2011 and 2012: Braking switch stopper. Just experienced it. The stopper erodes away quickly and once that happens, the brake lights don't turn off, ESC light lights up, and occasionally the accelerator doesn't respond. This apparently is under recall #136. Found out about it the hard way (multiple close calls while merging into the freeway and a drained battery in the morning). Shame on you Hyundai for not notifying me about this recall. You are looking at a very disappointed loyal customer.

    • @ajustin614
      @ajustin614 2 года назад

That literally happened to me last month. Super glue, and two pennies wrapped in duct tape where the stopper is supposed to go helped me get back on the road.

Yep, had the steering column grommet issue and brake switch pad issue. Pad was covered under warranty as was my engine failure at 63,000. And I have issues with brake lightbulbs failing unusually often. I also had both license plate bulbs burn out. If this happens to you…take a piece of electrical tape and wrap on end around the bulb and pull it out….they can be slippery and they just plug in on 2014 Sonatas. Works like a champ.

Also be wary of starter lever problems. Because the car won’t start, you’ll think the actual starter has gone bad when really it is a lever inside of the starter. You’ll know it’s the lever when you try to start to car but all you hear is a whining noise. It’s the starter spinning but the lever hasn’t pushed out the gear to actually engage. DO NOT let Hyundai repair this as they will try to charge you around $800. It really only requires a $7 part and a couple hours labor.

The day before, I was going to take it to a Hyundai dealership to get it checked, but the engine malfunctioned on the start up and soon enough bursted into flames. My 2014 (96K miles) recently started smelling like burnt oil. Found the exhaust manifold pretty well soaked in oil. Been regularly checking oil level and occasionally topping off. Guess I'm going to have to get some seals replaced. Also recently began growling/rattling around 1000-1500 rpm when in gear. Noise isn't present when in park, not in gear. Above that rpm, no noticeable noise. Not sure what that's about. Unrelated to the noise and oil, I just replaced driver's side cv axle, as the seal broke and flung grease all over the back of the driver side front wheel.

Everything seemed fine until I came to a stop sign and as soon as I pressed on the brake the car stalled. Not only does it do that but when the engine is cold the idle looks good but as soon as it warms up the idle drops down to a low 400 to 500 rpm and if I rev it up it will stall when idle comes back down. I had none of these problems before replacing the alternator. I did not touch any vacume lines while replacing the alternator. I'm totally baffled. Before I start replacing things I figured I would try and get some help first. Also I get no codes.

They sent it to a bigger dealership so they could check the engine out. Before they could even start looking into the engine, they wanted $700 to clean the combustion chamber and new spark plugs. Connecting rod failures, steering coupler, rear calipers seizing, oil burning...the tail lights would burn-out due to a too high wattage bulb. Didnt cover a single problem i know of after having one of these cars for 10 years. Its been a great car and I will keep it til the wheels fall off.
    #1 worn steering wheel coupler
Symptom: you have a clicking or cogging sensation when you are driving straight and move the wheel just to either side of center.
Fix: Its sort of a pain to change by yourself because you have to lift the whole steering column while on your back but its cheap and doable for one guy.
    #2 Dome light switch failure.
Symptom: The dome light switch acts like its in the ON position when set to DOOR.
Fix: Design of the switch mechanism is great but the materials dont hold up to heat. Im not sure if the heat comes from current passing or from being in the roof of the car. But you will need to either replace the whole fixture, or disassemble the switch mechanism and reform the plastic. (I was able to use UV resin to repair mine but i dont know how that will hold up over time. If the heat problem is current related you can try replacing the bulbs for some LEDs after you fix the switch.)
    #3 Premature CV Joint wear
Symptom: Clicking are rattling sound when reversing with wheel cut hard.
Fix: Replace CV Joints - another one that is doable for a average joe in the driveway but its not fun and will take most of a saturday. (My car had this symptom from about 35-40k miles on. The dealer "couldnt reproduce the problem". I finally did it myself after the warranty expired.) If you are high mileage i suggest you do #5 at the same time.
    #4 Emergency/Parking Brake worn
Symptom: E-brake does not hold car in place
Fix: This can be tricky, you can adjust the brake shoes inside the rotor hub using a hook on the tension wheel but if they are worn too much (or in my case the friction material separated from the shoe) the only option is replace them. This is NOT an easy task, lots of disassembly and time involved. (I have not done this though I plan to. I glued the friction material back onto the shoe and threw it back together. Do this at your own peril with the understanding that it will not stop the vehicle once in motion.)
#5 Ball joints, sway bar links, Tie rod ends
Symptom: You have rattling in the front end when hitting bumps, braking, turning, etc...
Fix: Lift front end of car and inspect the parts mentioned above. If they feel loose or you are able to make them rattle they are bad and need replaced.
These can all be changed in your driveway however if you do the tie rods you will need an alignment afterwards.

There was no V6 in this generation Sonata. Only the 2.4 n/a or 2.0 turbo. Steeeing coupler, rod bearing failure, clock spring and tail/brake light sockets should be on this list. On the turbo models, the wastegate actuator fails and also goes out of adjustment often. I own a 2011 2.0t and have done all of these except rod bearings. For some reason my engine didn't qualify for the recall, per my local Hyundai dealer. Still going strong at 113k miles. 🤞

I own 2011 se model 2.4l 170,000 MI...... Had 100,000 on when I bought it and replaced way too many parts. The engine under warranty. ...cracked leaking torque converter had to get transmission replaced they don't sell the torque converter alone. Axles.. suspension components.... went into limp mode towed to the dealer fix for free was a bad sensor. I love this car but wouldn't recommend it or buy another. Although my Hyundai dealership is superior with service and only charge $2,200 with install of remanufactured transmission. I replaced twice as many parts on this car than I did on my '05 Altima with 300,000 MI

2012 Hyundai Sonata constantly burning out front & back bulbs. Changed 8 bulbs in 1 year. Had to buy 2 new 4 bulb rear light holder & wiring because sockets were all burned or melted. $130 parts & $150 for repairs & installation. Not counting cost of 8 bulbs I already replaced. Its been a nightmare. Trading car in. Won't buy another Hyundai. Please post video to show how to replace the entire 4 bulb wiring in rear of 2012 Sonata.

GDI Engine replaced after 165k; warranty. Fuel pump relay after 96k. Outer tie rods and front axles after 122k; $2,700. Replaced starter after 123k. Replaced front struts after 177k and 191k. Replaced front springs after 177k. Replaced front sub-frame after 205k. Replaced rear shocks after 210k. Replaced both front lower control arms after 220k. Currently 223k. 58k on new engine. 4.5k on oil and it looks like sludge. Got receipts to prove maintenance performed regular. Reader's Digest: 2011 Sonata SUCKS big time!
