Small correction: Black metal did not come before Death metal, and instead was a counter-approach to satanic imagery that many found to be too sterile in sound and shock value with Death metal. However, the satanic imagery that we associate with Black metal now came way before even Death metal, with prominent bands at the time like Iron Maiden and Kiss flaunting depictions of the devil on their albums.
Yeah yeah, and Coven and the Stones were speaking about Satan back in the 60's. Totally sterile topic. Some people were summoning Demons back in Summer 5000 years ago. Nothing to do with trying to define a musical genre. Of course in life everything is related to something prior, you can come back a long time ago.
That's only if you believe the Norwegian perspective of the genre. Many claim Venom was the first black metal band, while others say it was Bathory, who were releasing music as early as 1983. The first wave of black metal was an international movement borne out of underground tape trading, and the early demos and albums from bands like Sepultura, Vulcano, Sarcofago, Sodom, Holocausto as well as bands such as Master's Hammer and Tormentor were creating early forms of black metal in the mid to late 80s, alongside the rise of death metal. The only difference is that black metal's popularity increased in the 90s, but for most of the 80s, many bands with raw production, harsh vocals and primitive riffs that had a satanic theme were labelled as black metal.
You need a history lesson in metal. Black metal came before death metal. Any metal band with satanic lyrics was considered black metal in the early mid 80s. In fact, magazines called Slayer, Venom and Merciful Fate the unholy trinity of black metal around that time.
@@petesantos5124 Yeah, the same people who call Venom thrash are the same people who say Metallica started thrash. Yet Venom released their first album 3 years before Metallica.
