You can hear the fear in her voice and how much she wants to come out then the relief when she does. It is so hard to watch yet her smile once the audience cheers, is so wonderful. Brave young woman.
it's cause she wants to be a man, her voice still has that fear till this day, watch her interviews on umbrella academy, also look at her face, she is clearing taking something to make herself look more manly.
+Jichael Mackson Agree. But not only that but you can clearly see she was soooo nervous and when she says that, I bet it felt like a huge relief and burden lifted from her.
+AngelBellz she doesn't do a macho pose.... -.- the is swinging from one food to the other and does not know what to do while just waiting for the massive applause to end.
@@shahilkv6754 there are cruel people in the world who think being gay isn't normal, who discriminate against, bully and harass gay people, that's why gay people need support
Ben Johnson Umm sorry but recognise is correct. That is the way it is spelt in U.K and the Commonwealth, Americans spell it recognize. It doesn't make "recognize" the correct spelling.
ali sial Hmm. Ali, maybe the reason why I said "I'm just kidding, guys" is because I'm aware of the fact that we Americans spell some words differently, and I was just kidding when I "corrected" his spelling, when he obviously isn't American. Do you even sarcasm?
Or maybe you spelt it that way because you actually thought recognize was the universally correct spelling, and just wanted to be a grammar nazi. I was just pointing it out. And Joel Hochstein ..who do you mean by "we"? and don't want me where?
5:24 - whether you are, straight, gay, bi, whatever - that collective "Wait, what?" moment from the audience and then them losing their shiznit is pure magic :D
I just saw this after coming to check cos someone was defending historical deadnaming and I thought "I bet I know one group who won't do that", so glad to see I was correct in that assumption.
You can just see at 5:19 that she is willing herself to go through with it and not back out. Bravery is a beautiful thing to see on someone so vulnerable in the moment.
you can hear in her entire speech how nervous and emotional she was about the whole thing. it was a huge event for her, and so honestly presented. cheers, ellen, you are supported
Reading these comments is horrible. I don't understand how people can watch this video (I assume you watch if you comment) and still NOT GET IT. I don't get it, when she just said to be less horrible towards each other, this comment section is so filled with hate. It seriousley gets me depressed.
It will take long for people to accept gays and lesbians. It will take forfuckingever. But one day, and this is for sure, minds will open up. We just have to wait for it, let the haters shout until they're out of voice.
I'm straight and I think there os nothing wrong with liking a person who has the same gemder as you. I don't understand that why people can't apperciate the fact that she likes girls
She IS brave! ..and it sickens me to see many of the hate comments below :( Guys, whether you like her sexuality or not, there is no excuse for the discrimination, or anyone to deny she's speaking the truth. Even if she wasn't speaking the truth, she would know, not any of you. Don't make excuses to say "Ohh she's faking it" "She should stop crying, nothing to be brave about" Etc. I feel that only the LGBT community will know what it's like. Society doesn't oppress people for being straight or teach that it's "unnatural" to be heterosexual. You don't "hide in the closet" for loving someone of the opposite sex (meaning, you don't hide FOR that reason. Anyone can keep their feelings about a person secret). I believe everyone should love who they are, but just remember that the pride and all the fuss over equality doesn't come from no where. Gender roles are not needed here. You should never be told to be a certain way because of what body parts you have. Just be yourself. None of you are to judge her.
Will never forget watching this for the first time just over two years ago as a young little 17 year old. Finally came out to myself on that early morning before school. Remember crying to myself in the shower just after, a moment that changed my life forever really. One of the best moments of my life and I haven't looked back. Still watch this video every once in a while. It gets better.
She looked so nervous leading up to it all.. she looked like she was ready to jump out of her skin the entire speech. Even with all that, the message rang clear about love, compassion, and the hope we all fight for in a more positive future. Great job, and thank you for adding your voice to this discussion as a Canadian personality, too.
One of my school friends came out to me 2 years ago. He texted me that he needed to talk to me about something on Monday, and I spent the whole weekend stressing out about what the hell it was he was gonna tell me. I thought he was gonna reproach me something, that he'd get in a fight with me and I might lose him as a friend. I bet you already guessed what it is he was to tell me... So we were both sitting at a table and he was kinda avoiding the subject, talking in a light-hearted tone as if nothing was going on, but I could tell something was wrong and I was scared. And then, out of the blue, he throws me "I'm gay", as if he was talking to me about the weather. I froze for a sec. At first, I thought it was a joke. When I realized it wasn't, I processed what I just had heard for a sec and sighed. "That's it?", I told him. "That's what you needed to tell me?". "Yes", he answered anxiously, but looking relieved at the same time. And then I told him "God, I am SO RELIEVED". I bet he wasn't expecting an answer like this one. "I thought you were mad at me for some reason, I spent the whole weekend stressing about this conversation". And I was almost mad at him. "Why are you making such a big deal out of it? I fucking don't care whether you're gay or straight, you're my friend!". Yes, that was my reaction. I was relieved. That's how everyone should feel when someone they love comes out to them. Because it means they don't have serious issues. They're not ill. They're not dying. They're not leaving the country forever. They're not announcing bad news. They're just telling you who they really are. And that is the most precious gift someone can ever give you. If they're willing to tell you, it means that they love you and that your support means everything to them. It means they care what you think about them and worry you might not love them anymore when you find out who they really are. No one should ever feel that way. When someone comes out to you, they're just looking for the support and the strength it takes to be themselves in a world full of hateful and intolerant people. If you can't give it to them, if you can't simply say "I love you no matter what and all I want is for you to be happy", then it's you that are sick, not gay people. To all of you who are reading my comment, all of you who are struggling right now and feel helpless, hopeless and worthless, just know that you all are beautiful people, no matter your skin color, your origin, your religion. No matter your gender identity, your sex, your sexual orientation. No matter your size, your weight, no matter how you look or what your voice sounds like. No matter your disabilities and weaknesses. Don't ever let people make you doubt that you deserve to be loved and happy. Don't ever let bullies take your strength and dignity. Don't let anyone ever bring you down. Your happiness belongs to you and to you only, and no one can take that away from you. It's up to you to accept who you are and embrace it. You all have what it takes to stand up for yourselves and be proud of whatever makes you different from others. Your difference is your strength and your beauty. Love yourself and you'll see people will love you too (and if they don't, it's their loss, not yours!).
Clem Verona, Thank You so much for writing this, this comment as well as Ellen's Speech are inspiring to the community and you're making a big difference!
This is the most beautiful comment I have read so far, I'm glad that I scrolled down to read the comments. Friend, your opinion about whether or not to make a statement really struck a cord for me.
Good for her! We all need to judge less and love more! Everyone is entitled to their own and to be loved! I am straight but I do feel it is nobody else's business to judge.
Oh my god the fact that people have to ASK why she sounds like she's gonna cry is incredibly disturbing!! Are you all a bunch of sociopaths or you're overdosing on anti depressants or what?? Cause if you had any emotions you would instinctively understand it in your gut why she sounds like that while talking about hardship and personal things she's kept in so long.
"I am young, yes, but what I have learned is that love, the beauty of it, the joy of it and yes, even the pain of it, is the most incredible gift to give and to receive as a human being. And we deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise." Wise words.. don't ever forget them! :)
I can't believe the comments I'm reading. What's funny is that people are claiming that homosexuality isn't a problem anymore, saying that what she did isn't brave and she only did it for publicity. Meanwhile other comments are talking about how homosexuality is a sin and a mental disorder. Other people are making disgusting jokes about her sexuality, probably because they can't take this seriously. These are all reasons why she needed to make this speech. As long as there are comments like these, we need people that fight for LGBT. As long as there are comments like these we will also need feminism. These things exist for a reason, people. And it's not about being gay. It's about being human, and having the right to live. I'm not gay but some of the things she said meant a lot to me. This isn't about her being gay, it's about knowing that you have just as much right as anyone else to be here.
SlayerOfKleiners Cool. It's nice to see two fellow unicorns as recent visitors in the RUclips comments of any video. It's especially nice to see you on this video. Ellen Page rocks! What an eloquent and powerful way she chose to come out publicly. I kicked down my own personal closet door in 1978 when I was 33. It was the best thing I ever did...
To the ignorant people: It takes a lot of courage to come out, more than you think it's worth. A person finding their identity is a huge deal, no matter who you are. Just because you can't make a difference doesn't mean she can't. Even with her speech she can motivate others to be themselves. You are ignoring the significant meaning behind being oneself, it impacts a person's whole life. If you ever cared to understand, you'll at least listen instead of speaking such ignorant words. There are still millions of others suffering, just because it worked out in one place doesn't mean other countries in the world are fine.
im a young 22 year old straight Christian man and i have taken a lot of hate from people because I ACCEPT AND SUPPORT EQUAL RIGHTS AND GAY RIGHTS! i don't know why its so hard for people to accept others for who they are despite their differences? why is it so hard for people to accept others of different religion, gender, race, and most of all sexual preference? we cant control who we love so why the hell do others think they have the right to control it for us?
Kyn Hardin I feel that those who try to control the rights of other humans are doing it out of selfishness. They are trying to make themselves feel comfortable, and using religion as an excuse to reason. You are borned to be loved as who you are, and society is moving forward. Those left behind are conformist to their selfishness and when one day they have a heart to accept it they'll feel that hatred is the worse feeling.
Im bisexual and I have a girlfriend. Im too afraid to tell any of my family. Ive told some of my friends and they're suportive about it, but some have completely turned on me.. Me and my girlfriend get bullied, even though we havent come out. I hope one day I can tell people my secret, without being judged...
Those people who have turned on you are not your friends and I seriously doubt they ever were. If they were your friends, they'd have support you and stood by your side. As to coming out to your family, I believe in you and I'm sure you can do it. It's hard but you have the strength to do so.
If some of your friends make a mistake, you totally should point out and try to direct them the right way. I think it`s the message your friends those who turned on you were trying to tell you.
吳 Randy I partly agree with you. Yes, we should be honest with our friends and let them know what's right or wrong, but in this case that's completely uncalled for. Being bisexual is not a mistake. No one should ever stop supporting anyone due to their sexual orientation.
I agree with you Tatiana I grew up in a very christain home and community and was raised that homosexuality was wrong I know believe that ppl should be allowed to love whoever they want who is it for us to tell someone else how they feel
foggymorning27 Thank you. And exactly. The thing is I have a really hard time understanding why someone's love life affect some people so much to the point where they take action to prevent others of living a fully happy life. I respect all religions, but in my opinion religious laws should only be applied to people who practice that same religion, you know? And I'm glad you have such an open mind, regardless from how you were raised.
Very insprational! And I can't believe the hate comments on "oh keep it to your self its not a big deal." It kinda is, when your that famous its really hard and scary. I know some kids that are scared enough to come out to their parents let alone the whole world who knows who you are. And all these coming out gay videos, keep them coming. Who cares if people get pissed about. Gays will stop making them once EVERYONE is allow to love and marry the one they love, then they will stop.
CannonLars Yeah but just cause we see something as being right doesn't mean we should push our views onto the rest of world. When the US is truly accepting of the gay community then we can work to make any possible progress in the world without disrespecting those individual cultures in regards to respect for the gay community.
Gotta love how quickly they changed his name to Elliot in the title after his recent coming out. Just goes to show that even though it's 6 years old, this video is still important and viewed frequently by so many.
@@ivra6345 Have you heard the news? Ellen came out as a transgender man almost a year ago, and now goes by Elliot. His pronouns are he/him and they/them.
@@spicebag_ she's a women what you're talking about ? They/them but she is one why use they/them this is nonsens ? And I don't know what you're thinking but she is a women
@@ivra6345 Check out the Vanity Fair article from last December, featuring a statement from Elliot himself about coming out as trans. I think you'll be quite surprised.
Her speech was so moving and authentic. I've loved all of her movies and she's not just an amazing actress, but an amazing person. I have hope that people like Ellen will help the movement make enough changes in this world so when I have kids they will not be surprised or confused when someone says "I'm gay".
So many people are complaining about her getting an applause when she announced she was gay. You guys dont understand that she isnt getting applauded because of the simple fact that shes gay. Shes getting applauded because she finally got the courage to come out. Its hard as a celebrity to come out as being gay, because maybe you wont get movies, youll lose fans, etc. She did this because she thinks more people in the LBGTQ community will have the courage and strength to come out as well. This is an issue though, because this is adding on to the lives we lose every day because of suicide and even murder. People are dying because other people cant accept the fact that others are gay. Its hard, as i have first hand experience, to figure out who you are. Im questioning myself. But enough about me. Im hoping that with this video, people will be more open with families, friends, etc about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, or questioning. Congratulations Ellen(:
I understand what you mean. I too am Gay (female) It takes allot of courage to come out to others and admit your gay. I still am unable to tell my family because they hate those sorts and would disown me. But i will open up and say it soon. I must because i can't hide from what i am. And can't stand the arguements of my family dissing the gays and trans .
roy mustang like i said before, im questioning. Im not sure how my family will react to it. Ive been questioning myself for as long as i could remember. I feel they will accept me, but its always scary thinking going through with it. It scares me with friends as i dont want to be turned away. I, like others in the LGBTQ community that is closeted, am scared. I wish you the best of luck with your family!
Why are there so many stupid and ignorant comments saying this like, "Oh wow I could've pounded that so hard.", or, "It's a shame she's a lesbian." Was she ever going to let you fuck her anyways? It makes me so angry how some people didn't grasp the message she was trying to get across, and how that's the initial thought that comes to their minds. Even if she was straight, the fact that she is gay doesn't break the fact that she's an amazing, intelligent human being. I'm proud of her having the courage to face her fears and come out to the world. No matter what, we'll always love and support you Ellen
I am 100% a hetero male, but I stand by @EllenPage 100000+%. I sincerely love her and will ALWAYS support her works! This was brave and honest...it even got me misty-eyed. If anyone can inspire and change the world, its her! #respect
*This is something everyone needs to see.* Thank you Ellen Page for being so brave, and for giving the best speech I've seen in a long time. And as she said, thank you Human Rights Campaign for making the world a better place for everyone.
She is articulate, and witty, and oh so earnest. In the end, she demonstrates how to make good use of people's kindness to find that strength within to do right by yourself, and then also to help others find the same. What we have witness, people, is a kind of magic. It spreads. The highlight of her speech, personally, is not in the part where she says "I'm gay". It's her entire speech that is so precious. Every word of her rings true. It's like Roger Ebert and Ellen Degeneres said. Be kind. We must be kind to one another. We are only here for a short time. We must be brave, and joyous and kind.
I'm crying too... I'm so scared to tell my family I'm bi. My brother has Aspergers and I'm scared it will make it hard for him to understand.. And I'm scared my mum will not love me anymore. She's from South America where there is a lot of homophobia and gay hate.... My mum finds gays a bit strange and I'm so scared she'll hate me... I think my dad might be half ok with it... I'm only fourteen and before when I tried to tell my mum she just told be I'm too young to know..
TMCP why don't you go find a psychiatrist to help you with your hateful thoughts?? I feel sorry for people like you who go round spreading nothing but hate, I hope you get better xx
WhinnyTheHorse I'm in a very similar situation. My parents are Christians and don't feel that homosexuals are good people. I'm worried that if I tell them they'll kick me out the house. Well, good luck to you, I hope it all goes well for you xxxx
The right to stampede and extort business owners to accept the unacceptable, while punishing them for refusal to comply with extortion in a way that is in far excess of the 8th Amendment's permissions, thus violating the business owner's right, is not "equality." It is pervertsexual supremacist rhetoric.
The Dozerfleet Channel So it's not okay to discriminate against people for their skin color, race, background, creed or gender, but it's completely okay to discriminate against them for their sexuality? Step into the 21st century dude, before you get caught looking like a jackass on the wrong side of history.
The Dozerfleet Channel To assume what you're saying is even close to true, I'd still rather see rich business owner get the short end of the straw than a gay dude or gal. But again that's assuming that is the situation, which it really isn't.
Carolyn Heck The Dozerfleet Channel to me gayness is not merely a matter of sexual orientation. it's about being able to standup for the things we believe in. atleast that's what it's used to be.
Not going to lie. I shed a tear or two. This a very powerful and emotional speech. I've admired/respected Ellen Page for her work and as a person (or as much as we, the mere public get to see)--this just makes me love her all the more. Genuinely happy for her, I know first hand how happier life can be when you don't have to hide any more, a certain aspect of your being. This can help many others.
Your comment expressed what I wanted to say better than I could have myself. Ellen Page is a great actress and always seemed like a cool person. Being an actress, someone who is always in the media spotlight, and being gay can't be easy. Coming out must have been scary but, by doing so, she has stood-up for who she is and, against those that make it hard for others. Much respect to her for that.
One of the best speech ever in favor of LGBT in my opinion. IT WOULD BE TRULY EASIER TO LIVE IN A WORLD WERE PEOPLE AREN'T HORRIBLE AND JUDGMENTAL TO EACH OTHER. I identify myself as a bi with a certain propension into boys...I haven't "come out" yet, but I don't really feel like doing it..I mean, I desire a world were homosexuals, bi and lesbian people can answer at "who's your crush?" with "oh, this boy/this girl" with absolute naturality and ease, but yet I still fear doing it. I still perceive a veil of hate towards people who aren't straight, and the bigots who claim not to be homophobes but then always come off with the fucking "but..." are still really strong in my opinion. I lied about my sexuality more than once...more than twice...and nobody truly know who my TRUE crushes were (and are) and even when I had the chance to CORRECTLY answer the crush answer I had internally panic attacks considering to let them truly know and I always answered "nobody" or "this girl" (but the fact that I even have some girl crushes doesn't make me feel like i'm truly lying [ex. I like alot Rihanna's, Beyoncé's and Lana's physiognomy]). But still NOBODY knows that i'm BI, and the flashback of my mother slapping me thrice about 9 years ago, because I was typing on the PC that I loved one of my boy classmates, stops me even more...now I'm about to turn 18 and I don't really know how she feels about it, but I still have another flashback that when I was a little kid, I was in my bed asking my dad if he would've loved me even if I was bi/gay and he said "Yes, of course. How can you even think of your dad not loving you?" Today my biggest crush in on one of my boy classmates (who's taken -.-) but who cares...you know, the "How is it called when your crush likes you back? IMAGINATION" is almost a fact that applies to like 80% and more people of any sex/sexuality so it don't really bothers me.
I lie about my sexuality every day as bi as well. Wouldn't it be amazing if someone could be like, "Who's your celebrity crush?" and I could go "I like this guy, and this girl is really awesome."
it kind of annoys me about how this will change a lot of peoples perception of her, many of the gay community will start singing her praise and suddenly love her, and all the homophobic assholes will hate her. i've liked her for a long time, because she is a great actress, her sexuality has nothing to do with that. but i applaud your courage ellen, it was a great speech.
Yes but you can love her for the things that she do (as an actress) and you can love her for the things that she fight for (LGBT rights) I like some people that do great job and activities but I don't like them for who they are.
"many of the gay community will start singing her praise and suddenly love her" Yeah, God forbid a group admires someone for something they do... *rolls eyes*
its great that the community has more role models and all, but many will just like her because she is gay- not due to her talents or personality. its just they are jumping on the bandwagon, it shouldn't annoy me i know but it does somewhat. (sorry if that comes off as ignorant or anything its not intentional)
Aeryn7Sun I know what you mean, I get annoyed at those things sometimes too (the inner hipster in all of us, I guess). But considering the alternative would be her still being in the closet and not completely herself, then it's better that she comes out, "bandwagon fans" and all. Also, I'm positive most gay people already loved her anyway. :P
I cannot believe this video has any dislikes at all! She is such an inspiration, everything she said moved me completely! Being accepted or being yourself should never be a choice someone has to make!
I didn't start crying until about halfway through, because her eloquence and love are so shiny and beautiful. Then it got more personal and I cried more.
If we could harness the kinetic energy of Ellen Page's right hand, we could be done with fossil fuels tomorrow. Also I guess this is kind of moving if you're into emotions and stuff.
I am not gay. I am not young. But I have a son who is both... I am old enough to be your parents father but I loved you before as an actress. Now I ADORE YOU as a person. Never been so proud to be Canadian
I was a kid when i watched this video. I was playing Beyond Two souls and searched more about him. This very video, was the first time in my life i saw a queer person in any kind of media that wasn’t in a derogatory way. That changed me forever. Thank you so much Elliot, from the bottom of my heart. I am an adult today able to embrace my identity because you told my child self exactly what I needed to hear.
Ellen Page was already a wonderful person in my book, but watching her give this speech brought me to tears, especially the shakiness of her voice as she spoke. People say it doesn't take courage these days to come out, but when I came out it was in a written note in high school to a lesbian friend, when most of my circle was also gay, or bisexual, or supportive, and I still felt like I was going to die doing it. I could never have done this.
I know what you mean. I struggled for months to tell my own twin sister, and then for another four months to tell my mother (who already knew and was dropping enormous hints that she did). It was hard to write that email to my best friend, who's also gay, and I haven't told most of my oldest friends yet. No matter how accepting you know they'll be, it's hard.
Not shown on-camera: moments after this speech Willem Dafoe ran onto the stage screaming, kidnapped her, and forced her to re-enact the entirety of Beyond: Two Souls while David Cage took notes.
I love the moment of silence in the audience after she comes out. I think it wasn't immediately registered in their heads that it is her first time coming out in public because we all kinda knew, and then it was like; "oh wait! She's finally out! Yay!"
Coming back here after Elliot has moved even further down his path to love and self-acceptance, and it's both surreal and heartwarming to see how far he's come in less than a decade. Keep doing you, Elliot. We love you
harley55dv Please don't try tear down the importance of Page's speech due to aspects of her life she never chose/had control of. Her appearance has nothing to do with her powerful words - I'd respect anyone who said something this inspiring regardless of their appearance.
Ryan Lamont This may have taken guts. I watch and I am so unaffected by any words she says. This may be because I am not gay and haven't been abused for it, or because I am a little disaffected by the argument. Where is the "I don't care what you fuck, just get on with things" campaign, because I'd sign up for that. :)
Chris Watters You may think the 'I don't care what you fuck, just get on with things' campaign would appeal to the LGBT community - Just treat everything as normal, no need to voice it. But what you're actually suggesting is "Be gay, but don't talk about it because it makes me uncomfortable". Straight people can proudly confess their love, admiration and such for a loved one and be met with positive reaction. But the fact is, being gay can get you killed in some countries, imprisoned in others and neglected in many. So we need the "Be proud to be gay" campaign. We need LGBT voices in the public light, to inspire, comfort and motivate the LGBT youth and community as a whole. There's a lot more work to be done to generate societal acceptance of the LGBT community, and I hope you'll support such work with an open mind.
EpicBroForce What do you mean? Like, if sombody who lives in a country ruled by a dictator is put into jail unjustly, his freedom would be taken away, but that freedom was and still would be one of his rights
EpicBroForce Uhm... I hope I'm not spamming your message box, but you got me intrigued; what do you mean when you say that rights aren't real? Like, that rights exist only as virtual agreements, and so you are pointing out how poorly they are implemented nowadays? Or you mean that they shouldn't exist, or that are uneffective, or useless, or something else?
You can audible hear how scared and nervous she is, but she stood up for herself and was genuine to us with complete bravery. Miss Ellen Page, you are a BAMF.
Well, good on Ellen Page for this. She definitely delivered a great speech. Just a shame that the comments (and associated "thumbs up" on those comments) for this on RUclips reflect just how petty, ignorant, and intolerant many people still are.
Note to self: When a RUclips video has to do with human rights and equality, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS. This is the site where you'll get called a Nazi for preferring one gaming console to another.
Coming back to this now and I still just love it so so so so so much. And as someone who once thought they were gay, and then figured out I’m a trans guy.... damn. I love this human so much. Thank you Elliot!!
Now I understand why this people call themselves “they” But Jesus asked him: “What is your name?” And he replied: “My name is Legion, because there are many of us.
Her speech is amazing. You can see how emotionally difficult this is for her by how much she is shaking throughout the video. But good for you Ellen! I hope this gives you some peace.
Some people ask why other people give a gay coming out so much importance, well easy answer, cause most people asume people are straight, and with so much hate to gays in this world, its obvious why this is applauded, cause it takes courage to come out as gay, you can see how nervous she is in her speech. Maybe people accept gays more nowadays but that doesnt mean the hatred for them is gone.. so please, if you dont like this, dont watch this, and keep your comment to youserlf.
I used to watch this every other day when I was 13 and now I'm almost 18 and I'm in a much better place with who I am and I will literally never forget how important this video was for me
A lot of people think that the "difficulties" of coming out are just over hyped and "OH! what's so bloody difficult about it?!", but to go ahead and accept an aspect of your existence when you know 90 out of the 100 people around you might be rejecting you, you'll suddenly be on the wrong side of the god loving oops, no: god fearing world; you might be subjected to incessant bullying, stares, back chatter and mistreatment at every level; THEN it takes a hell lot of courage to come out. Some of these countries, organizations and individuals are doing such fantastic work! And it's such a morale boost for young people to accept this part of themselves when they see high profile individuals taking the chance at doing so! Such a genuine and inspiring speech Ellen! Looks like All "Ellen"(s) are awesome ^_^
Equality isn't just about lgbt rights. It's about treating each other with respect because we're all human beings. Human rights, not just gay rights. A lot of you are missing the point. I encourage you to re-watch this and really listen to what Ellen is saying. The part that struck me most, as a straight, American female, was this: "If we took just five minutes to recognize each other's beauty instead of attacking each other for our differences.. That's not hard. It's really and easier and better way to live." This world would be a whole lot better if we all made an effort to be less horrible to one another.
People are saying who cares, but i think her doing this brings out the courage in other young people to do the same. It's leading by example, showing young and sometimes older people that it's ok to be gay. It's not a disease, it's who you are and nobody should be ashamed of who they are. And the person who wrote the disgusting comment "i'd kill my daughter blah blah blah" you are what is wrong with this world not your daughter. What gives you the right to stop her being happy?
I already loved this dedicated, genuine, talented young lady, but after this wonderful speach I admire and love her even more. She's incredibly strong and brave, and gives us all so much strenght. Thank You Ellen. You're a great person and an amazing inspiration for all of us who unfortunatey are strugling with this. Thank You again.
Stop hating. Do you even know how much courage this took for her to do this? Her speech put me in tears, weeping for humanities barbaric ways of treating people different, because of who they are attracted too. It doesn't make them a better or worse person. Ellen has so much courage and I'm reading THSES awful comments saying she 'arrogantly' came out!!! Do you know how hard that must have been? It could be a career ruiner, and she could lose supporters. (Which it shouldn't be) wow I just have no words. Stop hating on Ellen, I have no words the courage and bravery she expressed in her speech.
SheepEsquire And you obviously have reliable evidence to back up the assertion that she did this to boost her career ....? Disregard. Of course you don't. Stating something to be true -- doesn't make it so. Please stop making misattributed cause-and-effect relationships. If anything, this move will severely restrict the roles available to Ellen should she wish to continue in the motion picture industry. She might actually have to consider other vocational options. Only time will tell. But consider this: her presence at the conference wasn't announced. Her name wasn't on the conference schedule. She wasn't the keynote speaker -- but if she had -- the conference would have used her name to promote it and all the major networks would have been contacted. This clearly wasn't about publicity. This was about someone who is extraordinarily honest, deeply passionate, possesses tremendous courage, has razor-sharp intelligence, is titanically talented -- but was in gut-wrenching pain. We could learn a lot from Ellen if only we took the time to consider the other part of her message -- re: "the world would be a much better place if we only made the effort to be less horrible to each other". This message was for everybody -- everywhere. It was a message of peace and tolerance. Sadly that went right over your head.
I've seen this video multiple times, and everytime the emotion gets over me. Now seeing the title with his chosen name made me cry of happiness. Im so proud, he's so brave.

Remember crying to myself in the shower just after, a moment that changed my life forever really. One of the best moments of my life and I haven't looked back. Still watch this video every once in a while. It gets better.

SHE'S FREAKING AMAZING & A BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING!

Trust me, i came out on new years day, it was tough...
Huntork Tim Congratulations! You did right, it's better to be you than who others wants you to be.
im a young 22 year old straight Christian man and i have taken a lot of hate from people because I ACCEPT AND SUPPORT EQUAL RIGHTS AND GAY RIGHTS! i don't know why its so hard for people to accept others for who they are despite their differences? why is it so hard for people to accept others of different religion, gender, race, and most of all sexual preference? we cant control who we love so why the hell do others think they have the right to control it for us?
Kyn Hardin I feel that those who try to control the rights of other humans are doing it out of selfishness. They are trying to make themselves feel comfortable, and using religion as an excuse to reason. You are borned to be loved as who you are, and society is moving forward. Those left behind are conformist to their selfishness and when one day they have a heart to accept it they'll feel that hatred is the worse feeling.

If some of your friends make a mistake, you totally should point out and try to direct them the right way.

吳 Randy I partly agree with you. Yes, we should be honest with our friends and let them know what's right or wrong, but in this case that's completely uncalled for. Being bisexual is not a mistake. No one should ever stop supporting anyone due to their sexual orientation.

Why are there so many stupid and ignorant comments saying this like, "Oh wow I could've pounded that so hard.", or, "It's a shame she's a lesbian." Was she ever going to let you fuck her anyways? It makes me so angry how some people didn't grasp the message she was trying to get across, and how that's the initial thought that comes to their minds. Even if she was straight, the fact that she is gay doesn't break the fact that she's an amazing, intelligent human being. Thank you Ellen Page for being so brave, and for giving the best speech I've seen in a long time.
This made me cry so much. I am currently trying to find the strength to tell my parents that I am Queer.
I am almost crying
I hope you found the strength and everything was ok?
Powerful speech from actress Ellen Page as she shares her thoughts on equality and her own coming out as a young gay woman.
The Dozerfleet Channel
To assume what you're saying is even close to true, I'd still rather see rich business owner get the short end of the straw than a gay dude or gal. But again that's assuming that is the situation, which it really isn't.
Carolyn Heck
The Dozerfleet Channel to me gayness is not merely a matter of sexual orientation. it's about being able to standup for the things we believe in. atleast that's what it's used to be.
HA PUSS!
Always so amazing to see people we consider famous or celebrities struggle with things we all did and do. Emotional speech from the heart.
How can you even think of your dad not loving you?"
Today my biggest crush in on one of my boy classmates (who's taken -.-) but who cares...you know, the "How is it called when your crush likes you back? IMAGINATION" is almost a fact that applies to like 80% and more people of any sex/sexuality so it don't really bothers me.
I lie about my sexuality every day as bi as well. Wouldn't it be amazing if someone could be like, "Who's your celebrity crush?" and I could go "I like this guy, and this girl is really awesome."
I'm gay and tbh it is really quite hard.
Yeah my friends and family are like "any boys you're crushing on" And I'm like ;-;
+Fleetato Eew
+R. Jackson eew
it kind of annoys me about how this will change a lot of peoples perception of her, many of the gay community will start singing her praise and suddenly love her, and all the homophobic assholes will hate her. i've liked her for a long time, because she is a great actress, her sexuality has nothing to do with that. but i applaud your courage ellen, it was a great speech.
Yes but you can love her for the things that she do (as an actress) and you can love her for the things that she fight for (LGBT rights) I like some people that do great job and activities but I don't like them for who they are.
she's still great to me.
fan4lyfe
"many of the gay community will start singing her praise and suddenly love her"
Yeah, God forbid a group admires someone for something they do...
Amazing speech Ellen.
I cannot believe this video has any dislikes at all! She is such an inspiration, everything she said moved me completely! Being accepted or being yourself should never be a choice someone has to make!
Every video gets disliked. Even the really, really good ones. I believe it's called "trolling youtube".
Beautiful and incredible speech.
I didn't start crying until about halfway through, because her eloquence and love are so shiny and beautiful. Then it got more personal and I cried more.
Yep.. same here...
Is she really turning 27 in a week? She looks 16!
Same. The moment when she says she's here because she's gay is really emotional too.
Her voice was so trembly, her fear palpable and real.
you took the words right out of my mouth--thanks
If we could harness the kinetic energy of Ellen Page's right hand, we could be done with fossil fuels tomorrow.
Also I guess this is kind of moving if you're into emotions and stuff.
I would also suggest that if we could harness the power of my ass on Burrito Night, the world's energy problems would be solved.
what about the movement of teenagers right or left hands
I am not gay. I am not young. But I have a son who is both...
I am old enough to be your parents father but I loved you before
as an actress. Now I ADORE YOU as a person. Never been so
proud to be Canadian
I could never have done this.
you were still courageous tho, rock on!
Even claping here at home. Kinda crazy, I'm alone in this room, no one will ever see or here it, but I don't care, I needed to.
....so no Ryan ending?
Hahahaha
Tmoneu Wouldn't it be awesome if the game had a lesbian ending?! :D
Tmoneu i love u
I love you for that comment XD
OMG LOL! B2S has been so long ago. Wow. The rush back of memories i wactched of gameplays. lol
A powerful speech from a beautiful person.
Yay!"
I love how guys are saying "oh my chances with Ellen page are gone" Umm, what made you think you had a chance in the first place ? lol
Coming back here after Elliot has moved even further down his path to love and self-acceptance, and it's both surreal and heartwarming to see how far he's come in less than a decade. Keep doing you, Elliot. We love you
Such a brilliant speech from a very brave woman. Proud :)
If this had been an old, fat black gay guy I bet you wouldn't care as much, Human Rights is only for pretty white people.
harley55dv Please don't try tear down the importance of Page's speech due to aspects of her life she never chose/had control of.
Her appearance has nothing to do with her powerful words - I'd respect anyone who said something this inspiring regardless of their appearance.
harley55dv What an incredibly cynical statement to make, and completely off topic. Please take your agenda elsewhere.
Ryan Lamont
This may have taken guts.
I was in a library, and I found a book about human rights in the fiction section.
Still unfortunately appropriate
If something can be taken away from you, it is not a right, it's a privilege.
EpicBroForce
What do you mean?
Like, if sombody who lives in a country ruled by a dictator is put into jail unjustly, his freedom would be taken away, but that freedom was and still would be one of his rights
WandaThePanda If he had a right to freedom and it was taken away, it was a privilege. Rights aren't real.
EpicBroForce
Uhm...
I’m glad they changed the title even after 6 years.
ikr!
If you can differentiate the trolls then it's just humanity.
I signaled these hateful comments. You guys should do the same. This harassment/hate incitation should not be here.
Note to self: When a RUclips video has to do with human rights and equality, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS. This is the site where you'll get called a Nazi for preferring one gaming console to another.
EkumPokum I hope to God your comment was in jest, because my username has nothing to do with Jews...
SlayerOfKleiners
I was just joking man, just playing off of your comment is all.
EkumPokum Ah, good, good. As indicated, you can never be too sure on this site. Don't worry, I thumbed you up to make up for it.
Coming back to this now and I still just love it so so so so so much. And as someone who once thought they were gay, and then figured out I’m a trans guy.... damn. I love this human so much. Thank you Elliot!!
@r0bz their name is Elliot. They are trans.
Now I understand why this people call themselves “they”
But Jesus asked him: “What is your name?” And he replied: “My name is Legion, because there are many of us.
Her speech is amazing. You can see how emotionally difficult this is for her by how much she is shaking throughout the video. But good for you Ellen! I hope this gives you some peace.
She's truly an amazing person. That was an amazing speech !
***** and everyone has the right to attack stupid and ignorant people, like you.
Violeta ComoElColor just ignore him its a waste of time talking to people like this
Andy Bi you are so right! People like him just want attention! thanks :)
***** HAHA well come and get me kid
***** Hahaha now you are "attacking" me in my channel hahah og god how old are you, go to bed already kid
The part that struck me most, as a straight, American female, was this:
"If we took just five minutes to recognize each other's beauty instead of attacking each other for our differences.. That's not hard. It's really and easier and better way to live."
This world would be a whole lot better if we all made an effort to be less horrible to one another.
They were so nervous here
I already loved this dedicated, genuine, talented young lady, but after this wonderful speach I admire and love her even more. She's incredibly strong and brave, and gives us all so much strenght. Thank You Ellen. You're a great person and an amazing inspiration for all of us who unfortunatey are strugling with this. Thank You again.
omg pls do not be gay too we alread haveing lack of gurls for us boys :D
this is by far the stupidest comment I've ever seen
msms47 I'm having trouble understanding the point of this comment :c
gay girls is no good boys need GFS :D
msms47 Dude, it's okay. There are plenty of straight girls out there! More than lesbian ones. If not, we wouldn't be seen as the ones in the 'wrong'.
What a wonderfully articulate young woman. Your future is bright, Ellen. Congratulations on coming out! We love you.
*Moving speech*
I enjoyed hearing this heartfelt speech. Thank you Ellen Page, HRC, and others who work to make the world better.
thank you so much for changing the name and description
Stop hating. Do you even know how much courage this took for her to do this? Her speech put me in tears, weeping for humanities barbaric ways of treating people different, because of who they are attracted too. It doesn't make them a better or worse person. Ellen has so much courage and I'm reading THSES awful comments saying she 'arrogantly' came out!!! Do you know how hard that must have been? It could be a career ruiner, and she could lose supporters. (Which it shouldn't be) wow I just have no words. Stop hating on Ellen, I have no words the courage and bravery she expressed in her speech.
"It could be a career ruiner"
no lol. She did this to boost her career since it's in a bit of a lull at the moment, obviously.
But who is hating on Ellen? All I see are support messages. The few who say things against her are the minority and should be ignored.
SheepEsquire
And you obviously have reliable evidence to back up the assertion that she did this to boost her career ....?
Dan Silvester THANK YOU
I hope they receive the same support this time round. go elliot!
5:22 SHE'S AN AMAZING AND INSPIRING STRONG WOMAN !!

I've seen this video multiple times, and everytime the emotion gets over me. Now seeing the title with his chosen name made me cry of happiness. Im so proud, he's so brave.
