@Aaron Kroll you don't need to. Like for example when I listen to a podcast where is someone from whatever professional field, let's say he is a spy or certain field scientist. There will be lingo and things that can flow by, but good interviewer stops them to explain certain things even if they know it themselves so audience who doesn't catches up. It's not a secret society but a podcast for larger audience. Also just cultural differences is something to consider why explain some more so fringe lingo to an audience.
I still get it might be hard to know what to explain and what not when there is in the podcast is just people to whome it doesn't really even come to mind it might be more so a fringe thing. Because they are around same ages, lived in same places and hanged out in same sub-culture for so long.

I remember going to a demo and we were told we weren’t allowed to skate, touring team only. I was standing on top on one of the quarter pipes and I remember very clearly Szafranski came up and was like, “you look bummed man, what’s up?” Told him the situation and he was like “nah fuck that man, come skate this quarter with me”. One moment I’ll never forget.

Chris Cole destroyed a Blind (and I think ATeam) demo in the parking lot next to G-Spot (old skateshop that sponsored him in Langhorne) before he was super well known. He 270 fs noseblunted (edit: might have been fs nb 270 - sorry we're talking 20+ years ago) the top of a picnic table from flat, and was just crushing the whole demo. Stomping crazy tricks the whole time. There was a pro trying a varial heel off the side of a kicker for like the whole demo while teenage Cole just stacked tricks. I would love to find my 8mm footage from that demo.

Dennis Busenitz use to show up to every demo in Kansas and destroy. This was pre iPhone and RUclips around 99 or so. I specifically remember this toy machine demo where Kerry Getz was trying kickflip late shuv for over an hour and Dennis cruises up at Mach 11 and does it first try. We called him the Germinator back then, but I don't blame him, because that was the only way to get noticed back then. A year or two later he was on the cover of Thrasher and the rest is history

If you think the hometown hero is trying to “show you up” like you are in their territory, you are delusional. They probably look up to you guys so much and just want to hang and skate on your level. They are probably so hyped to be skating with the dudes he watches on video and just pushing themselves. Remember, you’ve been touring on a bus and skating all these places, and you could probably care less about the demo. To them, it was one of the most hype sessions they’ve had. The only vibe being put off is Chris Robert’s being a douche bag. Props to Kelly for getting it.

you missed the part where it has to fit the vibe. think about it in terms of trying to get on those teams visiting. they don't want anyone in the van they don't vibe with regardless of talent. if you're some cocky skater just rifling off tricks and not vibing with the team then that's not only going to ruin your networking changes there but make you look like a prick at the demo. Yeah, some might be wanting to give it all but its not just about the skating in that scenario. first impressions can be everything..

there were some hometown heroes in alabama whod skate with the pros during the demos. they werent trying to show the pros up. theyd just use it as an excuse to trash talk other locals after the demo like '' im royalty. i go to skate and land tricks with the pros. bow to me other locals!''

These guys are trying to get their attention and not everyone skates the same, one guy might have a more seriously attitude, while the other has a more laid back. I doubt every pro skater gets along with each other, even team members don't get along. Every demo I’ve ever been to there’s been plenty of time before or after to skate/hang with the pros. I’ve never been beyond an intermediate level of skateboarding so I’d usually stick to those times to skate. But at every demo there’s always locals skating during, and most of the time it’s chill especially when they’re hyping up the pros. But there’s always the one or two dudes trying that same trick you see them try all the time at the skate park, getting in the way, and it can kill the vibe.

This was an interesting perspective to hear. What a good question. Growing up in San Antonio, we didn't get a lot of demo tours that rolled through. When the Zumiez Couch tour came they had a spot duringfor the locals to have their own contest and best trick in the beginning and then the pro demo after that. That was dope. SA didn't really have the parks to support a good demo back then. Nowadays they have some good parks finally.
Also, shout out to the LIBtech crew for hanging out when they came through.

Probably hard to imagine someone having to earn a spot in skating rather than gimmicks but this made me realize how much better 9 club is at coming up with excuses instead of clips. Again, max respect Kelly for standing by a true skateboarders mindset. As for the rest, sad to see you discourage someone that simply has better skills and would take it more serious than your hypothetical curb sessions.
