    I knew a guy who was a WW2 Bomber Navigator. He taught me bridge when I was in my teens.
    Long gone.
    He had to spend the last parts of the European war in a POW camp in Rumania.
    He said it wasn't like a German camp, they just kept them from leaving.
    Rumania never had a downed pilot or POW get out. The locals wouldn't help them.
    The Rumanian government would give an acre of land to anyone who brought in an enemy combatant, I think alive.
    The worst problems in the camp was the starvation. When the prisoners complained the guards said it was the same food they were eating and their army was eating.

    I was in a good state college in the South in the '90s and had a great lit professor who said that the word "discrimination" has gotten a bad reputation over the decades. That there are many solid examples where society does and should discriminate. For example, parents who refuse to let their kids hang around with friends who are a bad influence are discriminating and they're doing the right thing. This tied in with some classic novel we were studying at the time.

    Larry Elder for VP! It's never been more clear to me. He's not going to win CA, but he doesn't need to. He needs to thumb is nose at the RNC and decimate the dem's black vote...what's left of it.
    Larry is perfect and should have been on that first debate. They screwed him and Trump can unscrew him. He's also better than most of the folks running. He's a good choice for president in his own right and fiery with the press. Great choice all around.

    I was born with a tarnished copper spoon in my mouth. My parents were middle class academics. I learned to value education for its sake and its ability to boost your career prospects and how to be a snob without merit.
    Now, I did inherit a good mind, thanks Dad, an appreciation of reading, and somehow I developed a good work ethic. My folks were hard workers, not lazy intellectuals. But their understanding of money and the business world, which I would enter and succeed in for a while, was practically zero. I had to figure that out myself. And I still am.
    Oh well, life is a adventure isnt it?

    To get 500,000 charging stations by 2030, they need to build 200 charging stations every day.
    I would be shocked if they could deliver on 200 parking cones on random parking spaces throughout the nation every day.
    I can't believe he's maintaining that as an expectation. It's complete failure of management.

    At 52:00, Scott talks about where it's valid to make group-judgements. That's the classic idea of Actuarial justice.
    If you are Falstaff in Shakespeare -- old, fat, drunk -- then yes, "the grave doth gape thrice wide for thee." And if a woman alone at night crosses the street when she sees a man, that too is reasonable.
    Note that actuarial justice is the other side of adversarial justice. In the law, we must prove that THIS individual did a thing, and meant to do it, before we say they are guilty.

    The Libertarian party always gets taken over by the democrats
    "There was a word that I always liked; the classical economists used it: liberal. The word liberal really meant, in the classical sense, the liberalization of the individuals from the tyranny of the State. That word was expropriated by our opponents and it has now come to mean liberality with other people’s money. The word was taken over. And so I, more than anybody else, was responsible for introducing and publicizing and perhaps making world-wide the word libertarian. . .
    I am sorry I ever did it. Why? Because the word libertarian has now been just as much expropriated as the word liberal."
    Leonard E. Reed (1965)

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn 20 дней назад

      It's possible that it has happened already. Back in the 60s & 70s the Liberal Party in NYS was effectively countered by the Conservative Party. The way it work was that each of the two parties could (but might not) put the same candidate selected by the major problem on their ticket. What mattered was the total vote.
      Thus, if a moderate Democrat was in line for the nomination, the Liberals would put someone else on the ticket and the moderate would lose to the GOP. When the Conservatives started playing the same game, the brother of William F. Buckley became a US Senator representing NYS for a term.
      Conservatives in Pennsylvania decided to play that game but the democRAT machines got a good number of Good Democrats to register Conservative and they dictated the party choice.

      Libertarian political philosophy orig. started as a leftside thing and that's not really up for debate dude--the french and the FFs/our ancestors for example were fighting kings ie, the ultimate rightwingers. Many years later closer to the era you're referencing is when the re-brand was rolled out to try to make it a rightside thing(the whole politics is local thing combined with inevitable drift as incentives change over time--that progressive idea a century ago becomes hey that's how we've always done it soon enough) but so much of the philosophy is still socially liberal/completely out of step with social conservatism--that the then 'new' lp still quickly turned into a ~50/50mix until near the end of bush2 when loads of disaffected Rs piled in.
      How long have you been around the lp out of curiosity?

    • @GilmerJohn
      @GilmerJohn 20 дней назад

      @@sup1e --- Well, can you put a "timeline" on this. I worked with a fellow who helped coordinate the Libertarians getting recognized in NC in, I believe, the 1976 ticket. It was definitely classic conservatives back then. Their candidate came to Greensboro, NC on his private plane which was a WWII era DC-3.
      Around that time, NC replaced the "First in Flight" tag on the license plates with "First in Freedom." That created a bit of resistance. A young Black kid made the news more than once when he covered the "First in Freedom" tag with tape. He was ticketed & charged with "altering" the plate or something similar. Even after the state AG said that it was permissible, the cops wrote the kid up again. I mention this because some libertarians also weren't happy with the tag. What they did was create a tape with a different tag but the same style, size, background of the original plate. The new message was "Taxation is Theft." As far as I know they were never stopped by the cops.

      @@GilmerJohn There's really no debate about early origins of the philosophy wrt to the guy I was orig responding to. But Ya I noted that the modern lp was essentially a re-brand from the right leaners. But it quickly evolved and at least for the 20yrs I was in(mid80s forward fwiw)--the mix was pretty even between the hippies/lefties and the various stripes of rightwingers--in broad strokes. Toward the end of bush2 is when the disaffected standard Rs started showing up in droves. Personally I bailed when some candidates got in office and voted against legalization bills in favor of continuing prohibition--but by that time it was already pretty crystal clear the left was actually getting it done. In general at this point I think they've kinda lost the plot :)

When I know one guy personally, he explained how he got reamed out at a meeting when he support compulsory car liability insurance. Another "hard case" is drugs. If you want to "legalize" pot then legalize prescription drugs so that folks visit doctors for good advice rather than as gate ways to drugs.
