I really like your "theoretical" videos like this one and "How to find your style". As an intermediate artist I'm looking for ways to move forward and develop. I found both of these very helpful. Thank you.
I whole heartedly agree that practice time is essential and hugely beneficial. For me, the equivalent of practicing the fundamentals of music, scales & arpeggios are techniques like graduated washes, stippling, glazing etc and practicing these, rather than painting particular landscape features is a much more effective use of time. Mastering the basic techniques gives you a solid foundation which will improve your results overall and doesn't require remembering how to paint a particular thing.
A very practical way to look at it. As a first-class procrastinator, I can easily put off “practicing” because in my mind it involves a whole painting. And little sketches of bits and pieces sounds too trivial, even though I know I need to improve in various areas. So thank you for your well-put-together video so I can get off my behind and improve.
What a great idea!! We seem to want to paint an entire painting instead of picking something like trees, or clouds. By doing this, sitting down to paint that entire landscape will be so much easier….things will just flow better as opposed to being great till you got to the trees, or rocks, or shoreline. I’m going to take my sketchbook and maybe start with pine trees, maybe throw in some perspective….kinda move all around a painting, breaking it down into each individual item. Thanks so much for this tip….it’s a great one!!
That's it. You cleared my blockage. Around 3:37 Spend a little bit of time every day (for me butterflies & flowers) getting better at it versus trying to spend... I was trying to complete an entire painting/picture, getting frustrated, & not getting anything accomplished & finally doing nothing. Thank you
This vid just showed up for me at the best time. You've just describe the practice I started to do this week. I was trying to put my musical background beside my new watercolor love. As a musician, I would practice no less than an hour a day and that number went to four hours a day before a concert. I don't have time to do that with any of the arts anymore but that practice was completely missing from my attempts at watercolor. So, I just took my worst paper and paints and resolved that no matter what I created I wouldn't show anyone to take away all pressures. (and why is that so hard with painting but I'd never dream of inviting people to listen to me practice music??? I still don't know?) so six types of clouds and four negative space practices later, I'm really enjoying myself and painting every day again. Sooo a year late, thank you!
Hello Mallery, will you be uploading RUclips videos again? I’ve become so frustrated with watercolor that I’ve put all of my supplies away. I’ve even considered selling everything I own. Your cloud demo short came across my feed today, and WOW! Utilizing perspective is something I’ve not considered when painting clouds. (Ok, I’m showing my beginner face). I hope I’ll see new videos soon. In the meantime, I’m going to feast on the ones available. God bless
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for… I always say - as a musician I understand how to start, how to practice, how to “play” with my medium, and how to get better… with art I always feel lost as to what to do or how to play in a way that helps me get better. Thank you!
Your videos are so brilliant. I really appreciate the way you deliver the information. You make us all feel like "we too can do it". Always brilliant insight!
So me practicing brush strokes, textures, composition and in addition paint one painting of another artist and painting one page just for fun, is the sort of correct way to go I guess. 🤔 Yet I still feel I am not progressing fast enough. 😢

Excellent suggestion! Id like to work on mountains and of course my biggest fear always...WATER!
I’m going to start with fruit. Starting with apples. You have good information.
Yes 🙌🏻 that’s a great idea! I’ve been loving painting lemons! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

I think my favourite part of painting is the practising
