    Thank you so much for the reaction! I’ve seen Deafheaven 3 times on 3 separate tours and they’ve blown me away every time. Literally Sunbather should be mandatory for anyone who listens to music critically and/or loves crying for enjoyment 😂

    Listen to it Jim, even if not for a reaction vid. It's quite an experience. Cheers!

    This song, and band really, just encapsulates the joy of making metal. They go through so many different moods and styles through the span of 12 minutes. With those wretched vocals over top of it all.

    This was really cool! Love that you were able to get into the vocals after a short while. It shows you clearly listen to music with the right mindset, discerning the artists' intent and assessing it based on that. Some people I know refuse to listen to them because of their vocals. I get that they can be abrasive, which is certainly the point, but I've always just thought of them as another instrument that is used to convey anguish, despair, anger, and intensity that either blends in with the heavy chaotic parts, or adds the perfect counterpoint to the more melodic and beautiful sections. Hope you check more of their music out, in my opinion they have only made great albums, with a couple of them being modern masterpieces.

    • @WardenOfSouls
      @WardenOfSouls 5 лет назад

      That's a good mindset for music. but in the end it has to fit your personal preference. for me for example it certainly fits and i get why they use that kind of vocals but it just doesn't get me. Thats just personal taste tho and not at all saying they are bad or anything :)

    • @andrewreed4924
      @andrewreed4924 5 лет назад +5

      @@WardenOfSouls I firmly believe personal preference can change though. More exposure to it will train your brain to reject it less often. Not everything worth listening to, or doing in life, comes easily at first, sometimes you have to put in the work. I personally didn't like the vocals for several listens of their breakthrough album Sunbather, I actually didn't listen to it again for months after I bought it and when I returned to it later in the year I was able to appreciate it much more. Now I can't imagine their music without it, there would be a crucial element missing.

    • @bugo348

      I think of the vocals as another musical instrument, namely a distorted rhythm guitar.

    An obvious recommendation after this would be their recent touring partners Alcest, their song 'Opale' would be a good one to do I think. Aside from that, if I was recommending something off the prog beaten track, I'd definitely say Emma Ruth Rundle, she also did an audiotree recording for her song Heaven which I think is just absurdly good.

Your choice, the way you catch the vibe, the way you pay attention... It's all real and warm. I also like your sound recording and mixage. Definitely you're a man of sophisticated, refined tastes, I can see it. And wow, you're listening to Negura Bunget, too. Keep it. Instantly subscribed. Regards.

    If you haven't checked out their other music yet, I'd love to see you react to one of their other songs. Audiotree has another great live recording of their song "Worthless Animal" or there's an an excellent live performance of one of their breakout songs "Sunbather" on a channel called Made of Chalk. Of course you could always check out album cuts for Dream House, Come Back, Canary Yellow, or Luna. All their songs are pretty fantastic though so you can't really go wrong.

  • @thegrimner
    @thegrimner 5 лет назад +3

    Your willingness to try out left of field stuff is kind of the thing that makes you stand out, Jim. Do keep it up.
    And to help you on that, I suggest yo you the band In The Woods... . They're a norwegian outfit that began as a black metal band, turned quite psychadelic by the time of their debut, and went on to release a colossal album in 1997, called Omnio. After that they still released a couple of pretty good albums, before disbanding and the guitar players going on to join Green Carnation. Which is another good band for you to listen, but their masterpiece is a 60 minute song, so I don't think you'll react to it live.
    But out of Omnio, I'd suggest this song: ruclips.net/video/RtodeWUmXmg/видео.html
    14 minutes of atmospheric heaviness and not a single riff repeated. Enjoy!

  • @pasit1738
    @pasit1738 5 лет назад +4

    Well, this was interesting. Very home made. Tight playing. I guess they've been heavily influenced by the Norwegian band called Kvelertak, which is blindingly good. But Deafheaven seems like boys, that been rehearsing in garage next door. The drummer stands out!

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Pasi, "interesting" and homemade :) Drummer was the standout for me too. Sounds like I need to listen to Kvelertak! Thanks matey!

    • @andrewreed4924
      @andrewreed4924 5 лет назад +7

      I wouldn't say Kvelertak is a big influence on them as they started writing music before the first Kvelertak album released. They're certainly influenced by Norwegian black metal and some of the bands that came after them that decided to mix black metal with shoegaze and post rock like Alcest and Lantlos. While also adding in their own elements of screamo and post-hardcore. Kvelertak is amazing though, but definitely more in the "black'n roll" style.

    • @RibeiroGames12
      @RibeiroGames12 Год назад

      @@andrewreed4924 they're definitely influences by Wolves at the throne room as well. Two hunters was such a game changer within the USBM scene and the post black metal genre in general. Even their logo at their demo seemed influenced by them.
      And screamo is post-hardcore. Basically a microgenre
