At like age 12 I made the local all star team but I was one of the lesser players on that team. Anyways the coach put me at 8th in the lineup and told me I was the 'second cleanup 'and I believed him lol I was like hell yeah

Yeah, I was hoping he would share his thoughts on the logic used to set a lineup. I've always had speedy/lots of walk at 1-2, power hitters 3 - 4 - 5, your Mendoza's 6-7-8 and then the pitcher (I don't acknowledge DH!!) . I'd love to hear other's ideas. Recently I've seen some managers do pitcher 8th, and another 'lead-off' guy 9th, but I find that logic weird.

I’m more interested in what makes a hitter in a lineup... i.e... what makes a 3rd hitter in a lineup vs a cleanup hitter at 4th? Both of these guys are typically your power hitters... think of
    Mantle & Maris
    McGwire & Canseco
    Mauer & Morneau
Who gets the nod here at cleanup? The guy with the higher battting average? Or the guy who hits the most extra base hits or homers?
You could even expand this to positions 2 - 5 in a lineup... the lead off hitter is fairly simple to figure out... he’s the table setter.

It's obvious how the first three or four hitters are chosen but what about the rest of the line up? Do they just chose them in order of their average or is there something else in the decision? (For instance, it might make sense to alternate players with good on base percentages, with long ball hitters.)
    I've always wondered about this.

Great video. You definitely are leadoff hitter or drag 9 hole to get a break. Great plate discipline and speed. Get on base a lot. I think everyone has different opinion on batting order but looks like they all are similar. Hers my breakdown of lineup
    1. Great on base percentage speed or basestealing a plus great plate vision and discipline
    2. Doesn’t hit into double plays usually a lefty or a push hitting righty must be able to bunt
    3. Best hitter
    4. Clutch hitter who can hit for power and can at the least sac fly in runner from 3rd will see the worst pitches so plate disicipline a plus
    5. Power hitter who has best chance for rbis
    6. Average hitter
    7. Hitter in a slump
    8. Worst hitter
    9. Interchangeable with lead off hitter to not get too many at bats and get burnt out important hitter because gets top of order back up.
So leadoff or last and possibly 7 th here and there because even when you were not hitting you still got on base a lot. I’d bat you 7th if I’m really trying to spark your bat. Leadoff back in the day with a guy your size would scare the crap out of 2b or ssn because there isn’t many 215 lb leadoff hitters.

you understand, after the first inning, the order doesnt matter? In the 2nd inning, the next batter becomes the first batter. You dont start over at each inning. If the first 3 batters get out in the first inning, the 4th batter becomes the first batter, in the second inning.

    • @AntonelliBaseball
      @AntonelliBaseball  6 лет назад

Yes true, but the 1 hitter will always lead off at least one inning every game. 2 hitter will hit 2 at least once, 3 hitter will hit 3 at least once. Can't say that for other spots. Thanks for watching!!!

Of course players have no say in batting order! I thought this vid would answer the question that its title asked! In softball (and I guess baseball below the pros)... #1-Best on-base percentage who can steal bases; #2-Good bunter/hitter who is able to move the runner and can do so under pressure (perhaps the most challenging spot); #3- best power hitter; #4 & #5- good power hitters; #6 & #7- average hitters; #8 a batter who is struggling (pitchers tend to relax with #7 and especially #8 so they will to get better pitches to hit); #9- the place to groom a young, future leadoff. This spot sets up the top of the order. Important to understand... In most games, #1,2,3,4 will get more plate appearances than the lower half. Even if you keep it private, knowing your player's batting statistics is important for managing your batting order. It is excellent information that indicates who should bat where.
