I like that when major leaguers go to the minors for rehab they buy food for the whole team. That’s a cool thing to do
That is really cool of them but I wonder where they draw the line. Like Bellinger just spent more than 60 days down there I think. Even with his money he couldn't have been buying takeout from the local steak house 30 to 40 times or whatever. I mean, he could have, but geez that is a lot to ask. That would add up to a couple hundred thousand pretty quick.
I worked as field and tunnel security for the Rangers for a season. I became good friends with the cooks, one of whom was hired from working as a cook in Vegas at a hotel/casino. Sometimes, if the cooks were unsure of something or had extra, I would get some of their stuff, or be the guinea pig when I was sitting in the back of the clubhouse in the family lounge. I can honestly say that it was some great eats. They had a grill near the entrance to the garage that they would take out into the driveway and start grilling stuff like ribs, burgers, corn, hot dogs (Nolan Ryan beef, of course), and all sorts of stuff. Some of the best food I've had aside from travelling the world. By the way, love your channel, thanks for doing this.
Forrest Commander that’s really interesting
That is really cool man. Thank you for relating that. I don't know why but I find the pro sports world intriguing. Nobody ever thinks about these little things behind the scenes.
I am in charge of the post game game spread for the St. Paul Saints (American Association). They get Bagels w/ cream cheese and sandwiches ( peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese,)before the game. After they game i give them some type of salad, desert, and four hot main dishes, usually two vegetables (i.e. Corn, beans, stir fry, potatoes) and two meats (Steak, pulled pork, chicken, etc..) . They also have snacks such as chips, cereal, cookies, donuts, chips and salsa, candy bars and fruit available all the time.
Will Bensing how much to make you my chef
Will Bensing Lucky dawggg
Saints of the American Association. Thats triple A if anyone was wondering.
My dad played a season with the Saints!
What a great team to be associated with! I understand that they get huge crowds and throw some of the most innovative promotions. I heard from a friend that they wanted to get in the Guiness Book of Records for starting the latest ball game in the evening, letting the fans sleep overnight in the outfield and then having the earliest start to a game the next morning. Crazy!
These have become some of my favorite videos on the net. I was a pretty solid high school player who always had big league dreams... so it's fun to hear these behind the scenes stories. Also helps add a little more "depth" to my Road to the Show adventures in MLB the show. Thanks Matt!
I love your channel and I love baseball!! So entertaining to me lol. Thank God I found ur channel
Wish there was someone like you for the NFL
Haha thanks! One day maybe! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Andrew Tamez Conner Sullivan is a good person to check out.
Wouldn't you rather get advice from someone who's had a little more experience than 28 days in the NFL.....LOL
Mark Dobkin No it isn’t
Pat Macafee
I was just watching the Yankees game and they said Matt holiday is rehabbing in Tampa (that's where I live)and he took all 25 guys out to a really nice expensive restaurant down here n picked up the tab.. That's really cool... Keep up the good videos!
That is awesome! Thanks for watching!!
I worked for a Frontier League team (Independent Ball) and they would order from local chain restaurants. The only well known place was Chick-Fil-A but only the plain chicken sandwiches. There would be a giant box of sandwiches everyone would grab from and if you were lucky there would be extras after the game. We had a pizza place, a hot dog place and the best was this Italian place we would get lemon chicken and salad
I use to work in the clubhouse of a triple-A team and whenever a major league player comes down for whatever reason and was in a good mood he’d buy the team and coaches nice ass spreads
Nice Ass Spreads?
Um, not on any team I've been on.
Just recently ran into your clips about baseball. I find them candid and informative. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Thanks for watching!
as far as i know your channel is completely unique on youtube. Thanks for the vids!
Thank you!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
These videos are awesome. Great listening material to have on while studying. Thanks for posting
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I love this channel. My 6 year old is looking like he's really serious about baseball. He'll get home from practice after 3 hours and wants me to throw the ball to him as soon as we get home. It's gonna be nice to show him these types of videos about the perks of baseball like food, the clubhouse, gear, etc and other fun things about the game to keep him motivated. Thanks, just subscribed to your channel.
Awesome! Glad you guys enjoy them. Thanks for commenting and watching our videos!
As always, a very interesting perspective.
Thanks for doing this...
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!!
This is an awesome channel. Congrats man. Hope you get a ton more subs. The info is so cool. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for watching!!!!
Antonelli I've learned a few things about you since watching your videos. First off you love sushi. Secondly you're likeable, humble and smart. I appreciate that you don't beg your viewers to push the like or subscribe button so here we go, I'm pushing them both. I enjoy learning about the generally hidden side of baseball.
Thanks so much!!!!
Congrats on making the big leagues. And i also enjoy your channel
This is yet another video from 'Behind the Scenes' series that I have liked right away. Yes, I have been very curious about what kind of meals do professional baseball players encounter and this video has fulfilled my wish. I was startled by the peanut-butter-and-jelly-sadwich predicament through the minors! (I understand, Matt. I am no fan of the peanut butter and jelly either! I tend to view the peanut butter and jelly as a 'last resort'; I would normally ignore it unless either I just do not have anything else available to eat.) Although, I can kind of understand the preference for the peanut and butter: A compact source of calories.
There is a cliche -- 'Soldiers march on their stomachs' attributed to Napoleon. I think this also applies to professional athletes. ;)
Fantastic Info Antonelli! From Nathan in New Zealand
When my cousin was with the Rockies I went to a game in Philly and they had a cook in the clubhouse making philly cheesesteaks. It was pretty good! I remember they also had a fridge full of beer. One of the best conversations I had was drinking a beer with Sandy Alomar Sr! Guy is hilarious!! Great videos man!
I like it! And that is awesome. Thanks a bunch for watching!!
who's is your cuz
Preston Wilson
oh cool
My highschool team was traveling to the neighboring city and the team we were facing was actually one of are favorite teams because they would feed us Bbq after the game grilled by the coaches and we would do the same for them it was a fun rivalry
Can you do a vid on equipment like gloves and bats and how you got them and chose the glove and bats you liked
Sure thing! Thanks for the suggestion!
Love these videos. 🙌👊
No joke, a day after I saw this video, I was at a local grocery store, and I came upon "HomePlate" peanut butter. Made by former MLB'ers Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, Marco Scutaro, John McDonald, among others, they wanted to make a healthier and tastier peanut butter for minor leagures (only has 4 ingredients) and it is now the official peanut butter of all 30 MLB clubhouses..at least they are looking after the young minor leagures
Interesting!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great videos, can you tell about what cities had the best food and what it was and also were there ever any cheap big leaguers who wouldn't buy during their rehab stints ? Thanks
i’d like to know what it was like to go from a metal bat to the wood bat. was it a tough transition? how did it affect your batting?
I can see a Manager wondering, “why aren’t we winning more games?” Maybe it’s because your guys are eating candy and PB&J everyday. Smh
When you were with us in the minors, Maddux used to send your clubhouse guy to our kitchen (Omni Inseat) for his cheeseburger on the days he pitched.. he preferred the way our chef made them to the ones in the clubhouse. 😂
Awesome series.
Thanks so much! Thanks for watching and commenting!
When I worked on the field for a AA team I remember the road team always got catered food like pizza or Mexican food, but it probably just depends on place.
The Rod Sox AAA team is moving from from RI to Worcester, MA in about 2 years.
Hey Matt. Curious what it’s like for a young player recently called up to play against the team he was a fan of growing up.
It would be interesting to hear about the interactions between the players at different levels as you moved up through the minors. Like I bet competition to move up from eating pb&j could get intense sometimes within a clubhouse. being a high draft pick I'm sure you were expected to move up the ranks fairly quickly. was there resentment from guys who realistically probably weren't going to move up the chain or just overall drama in the clubhouse
Great question! I'll do my best to answer them in a video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball awesome! obviously I don't want to get you in trouble by giving dirt on former teammates. but I can't imagine every player wanted to see you succeed when it is between you and them who got called up
Great videos, love hearing backstories on mlb. Go Deacs.
Excellent videos.
Thanks!!!
My coach that played in Indyball said they got a plater of Costco sandwiches 😂
Haha oo yeah!
🤣😭
(Video suggestion) can you please make a video about what you do in practices and what happens if you miss them?
Sure thing! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Zach Attack- you practice.
I guess all that makes sense. Not only do the players make a bit more money at each level (at least they do from low A compared to like AAA) so they can contribute a little bit more, but the stadiums they play in sell more tickets and are more sophisticated. Some of these AA and AAA stadiums are amazing. They offer all sorts of food choices so I can see it would be a lot easier for the club to offer better and more choices to the players. Oh, and watching Trevor Bauer's blogs, the food at the LA Dodgers for the players looks flat out amazing!
Maybe you can do a video on your typical day at practice or a game? Would be neat to see your routine and process. Thanks Matt! Love these videos
Sure thing will do! Thanks for the suggestion!
Sometimes a team's Booster Club will cook for the team. Was that ever an option especially at the lower levels?
Great video! Question - was there a time during your pro career where you asked the cook to make you something but they couldn't make it for you?
Thanks! And no that never happened. I always asked for a burger or chicken sandwich lol. Thanks for commenting and watching!
In the late 80s I worked for a A+ level team. Never saw food provided by the team given to the players. Then again, we were known as one of the worst run teams in pro baseball of any level. On the road, players got something like $6 a day extra pay for food. Most of the players would go by a supermarket and buy stuff to make sandwiches or something cheap.
Love your videos I also enjoy the fact you are a redsox fan #gosox
Did you play for the chihuahuas in triple a because they are triple a for padres right now or did you play for diablos double a (both were teams in El Paso)
I worked for a short season single A team in Jamestown. Matt is dead on. Not only was the food like that the guys either lived in a community college dorm or with families in the area. Not the glamorous life at all.
I read that former Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Carlson (aka Rabbit) loved Peanut Butter and Jelly so much that he always made sure that he brought his own to the MLB clubhouse just in case. He would have a sandwich before the game and another one around the 4th inning.
Can you talk about the famous candy bag that had to be packed for the bullpen?
High-A Marauders (Pirates) has a cafeteria. Great food.
That is great! Thanks for watching!
I love P & J, would have worked for me. If I had played ball at that level, come to think of it, my mom made me P & Js, so I did have that
Me and my friends are kind of confused on the slot that the back elbow goes into do u think u could explain a little bit about that or do a video
Yeah sure thing! It is confusing. I'll make a video for you. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Could u fill me in on the life of a bullpen catcher and what they earn. Thanks
Hey I'm in a bad slump with dropping my hands and I need to pick up my bat speed can you make a video or give me some tips?
Sure thing I'll try to throw something together for you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Carson Pettit I was doing the same thing earlier this year. Have you ever seen Ben zobrist bat? I picked up my mechanics from him, keeping my hands moving really helped me from dropping my hands. and now I'm hitting 650
This has always been one of those things I've always wondered about 😂😂. Interesting to hear
Awesome thanks for watching!
Hey..we're not all fellas( intro)!😁 Really enjoy your channel..keep it up.⚾Fan!
I don't like PBJ so you are not alone! :) good stuff, please continue to doing this.
Haha I like it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey, I am a middle infielder and got a couple D1, and D2 looks but no offers. I send them emails and send them my games schedule. What other things can I do to get them to offer me?
That is really it. You just need to worry about playing well and let everything else take care of itself. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Didn’t know about the club house fee
You have the coolest intro
Haha thanks! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a bunch of questions. This channel is great for a huge baseball fan. I'll ask 1 question. During a game have you ever felt the crowd got to overwhelming for you either with their comments or just the moment itself. Ok 1 more question how do you deal with an umpire who is inconsistent. Does it mess up your approach?
Thanks!! I will make some videos answering your questions! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Seems like you ought to be an authority on the coffee in mlb
That's hilarious, I thought I was the only one who wouldn't eat those PB&J sandwiches!! I was lucky, I'd go just outside the park in New Haven and go to subway for the 5 dollar foot long. LOL
My high school coach bows a guy that used to play for the Cardinals organization and he said that when he signed Yadi took them and bought al of them a steak now he plays for the Angels as a Shortstop and probably want ever get called up from AAA now
brendan ryan?
I've been in the Rangers club house in Arlington. They had a wall of candy, gum, drinks and seeds. Looked like the inside of a gas station. Beautiful-
what about on long flights across the country? I always imagined the Yankees eating steak & lobster after games ha!
i do have a yankee question
my dad played in the Prospect leauge Indyball and A ball
That's awesome! He must have had a lot of cool experiences. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Antonelli Baseball yup he played for the Cubs A team the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. and a bunch of other Indy and Prospect teams
Antonelli Baseball he wasn't great either when he was in the Cubs farm system he only hit 118. over 4 years
I wish my coaches were this sick, but it is cool to hear coaches stories of how they got to the bigs
Thanks! And thanks for watching and commenting!
Hot Dogs, Peanuts and Klondike Bars, Right?
Well it's been a year since my last comment moved on to work for the Toledo Mud Hens another AAA team... And now I am taking a practical in Chicago to work for the White Sox to do all the players food .. might make it a thing to comment everytime I get traded to another team guess I'm just like a player huh
haha! good luck to you and have fun!!! I may have to get you on the channel to ask you some questions about food! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
What was the lowest per diem you ever get, and what did you bought with.
I always wondered if certain players had their own Dietician’s or Functional Medicine Docs that made meal and supplement plans?
Some definitely did. A lot did not though, especially when I played. Thanks for watching!!!
How much time is devoted to individual BP,OR DEFENSIVE TRAINING on average?
I'll make a video on it. You do it everyday. BP for about 45 minutes on field. Defensive work every day during BP
nice video
Thanks!
What is club house dues?
was pooling money ever an option at the lower levels? Like putting in money for a pizza, or a better spread.
Were host families ever an option?
And I think you were referring to "cup of soup" which was noodles/soup in a styrofoam cup.
"Host families" are NOT for PROFESSIONAL athletes. They are for Little League teams playing in the World Series.
@@jaysantos536 regardless, they do (did) exist
www.milb.com/news/be-a-host-family-292633356
Im 13 years old and i just made the transition from 70 feet to 90 feet and im horrible in the infield because i play third base and its hard to make the long throw. Do you have any advice?
That is the toughest adjustment for players. Don't worry about it. Do what you can and keep working hard. You will be fine eventually. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Interesting video as I am an executive chef for a AAA ball Club ( Gwinnett stripers formula Gwinnett Braves) and former sous chef for a single A team ( Dayton Dragons). I didn't know that some teams were doing the players like this I can't speak for everyone but I know that I always try to work with the club to see if we can get a food budget going because it's important to me for the guys to do the best and if I can add to their performance by giving them good food I feel like I'm doing my part even though I'm not playing the game. I have a question for you let's say you were AAA level what kind of foods would you say most guys enjoy. Any insight would be great thank you for posting this video and the rest of your serious hope you have a blessed and successful 2018.
Shut up man
"The Spread"
Yup! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
love your vids keep up the great work :D
Also, I have a question. Do you go drafted into the minors from college ball. Also, does it really matter to be playing travel and aau baseball in highschool to impress scouts?
I'll try to make a video for it! Thanks!!!
Hot water soup and floor dirt sammiches!
when do you start to put money in pension fund and whe can you start to get fund from it
what position did you play?
All infield positions, but also spent some time in the outfield
Peanut butter is good for one thing: Baiting mousetraps.
Very true!!!
The hell you say. Peanut butter is one of the best creations and food of all time. Love me some peanut butter!
I remember when I was an assistant high school baseball coach. My lovely wife assumed the role of "team mom" and would deliver a tray of pizza before long road trips and donuts and hot chocolate on cold days. The players would devour the stuff like beasts but they always said thank you to her.
Pity the poor McDonalds cashier after a road game before a long trip home. Eighteen hooting ballplayers in their uniforms..."12 Big Macs, 10 Quarter Pounders, 18 Large Fries and 18 Large Cokes stat!"
Did you ever play in Lake Elsinore?
Yes for a half season! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Was it easy to transition from level to level?
Great question! I'll make a video on it and throw it up ASAP! Thanks!
Hey Matt love your video's! just was wondering if you guys ever talk about the fans in the dugout? Like if someone's haggling you guys do you guys talk shit about them? something I always wondered thanks
All the time! Especially if they are obnoxious lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm allergic to peanut butter. What would the case be if a player was allergic to the certain food they serve?
Payton Bond tough luck
Haha probably true
Hmmm good question...probably stay away from the spread. I don't think there were any other options lol. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Payton Bond have a jelly sandwich
Would you ever consider a coaching job? Hitting coach, college head coach, etc.
Peanut butter and jelly is the best!!
reminds me of that song
what is the hotel experience like in all levels of pro ball?
I have a couple videos that delve into it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm glad you are able to string together grammatically correct sentences. By definition, it is pretty much impossible to be intelligent as a pro baseball player if you are not a pitcher for the following reason: THE TIME INVOLVED for position players. Pro baseball position players must practice tons of hours on both offense and defense. Then throw in overall body training. Considering the fierce competition from Little League all the way to the majors, those that make it will have spent thousands of hours of their lives hitting a little white ball and fielding a little white ball. Fielding a ball and hitting a ball does zero for academic acumen. There are only so many hours in a day. Very, very, very rarely do you you hear about an ex MLBer retiring to a medical or law practice (maybe never?). There are simply not enough hours in a day to study, and at the same time, have time to practice enough for the MLB. I admire the stick-to-it-ivness of a guy that is willing to do this, but in a way, he is performing a bit of a lobotomy on his brain via non usage. For 1 in 100,000 baseball playing dreamers, they end up with the big payday. Feeding minor league players peanut butter sandwiches everyday says a lot about how respected they are. No other sport would dream of feeding an athlete peanut butter sandwiches. And wow, when they move up to AA, they get Pringles chips!!!
I love Peanut Butter but it makes me break out so bad, worse than just peanuts, from allergies. I get hives on my skin. I think its all the extra peanut oil in the peanut butter as oppose to the natural peanut itself. So I have not ate PB in a decade. Its not a life threatening allergy at all, its not fun having itchy patches of hives on your skin either. I even eat normal peanuts or peanut M&Ms and take some medicine and don't have trouble. Or even eat a reeses cup every now and then and don't have problems. Because its small dose. But when making a PBJ sandwich its a higher dose of PB than one Reeses. And you need enough to enjoy the sandwich lol. A bad side effect of me not eating PB aside from that rare reeses cup is that I don't like Pancakes anymore. I grew into this allergy in my teens. I had established I only liked Pancakes with peanut butter on them when I was a kid and pre teen. So when I grew into this allergy I also stopped liking pancakes. Actually I like chocolate chip pancakes but they take more effort to make and my dad didn't like to do those too often, also less healthy lol.
I know what its like to not like something a lot of people like. I don't like Beer. At all. And no I don't drink but thats not why, I do like to have something like Mikes Hard or Smirnoff Ice and a tequila mix. I just can't stand the taste or any I have tried which is a lot. I don't care to drink enough to get used to it. But I don't think I ever could. I have actually never been completely drunk either just close. It just isn't something I want to do. It doesn't amuse me and I don't think its fun. But its not the reason, its the taste. Because there is alcohol I like. And I am not a lightweight really either. I can drink 3-4 Mikes Hard type drinks and not feel drunk. So thats usually where I stop. I feel it but its not what I would call being drunk in the slightest. I don't test the driving law though when I do lol, those laws/tests can say your drunk as far as BAC goes even if you don't feel it.
When are you allowed free time to do whatever you want?....hang out with friends/family...attend a mueseum...etc
Did you have to eat the food they gave ?sorry if you already said it in the vid.
No prob!
What if you're allergic to peanut butter?? I guess a jelly sandwich lol
a little higher up in 'A' ball...maybe, you'd get some spam...instead of just peanut butter & jelly.
Wow food
Yes sir!
Can you do a video about choking up on the bat please?
Thanks for your time
Sure thing!!
I did not know there were clubhouse fees.
Yup! They can be expensive at times. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Can you give your view on independent league base , such as the south Atlantic league... with teams that have a lot of former major league players playing for them ? Oh and thanks for another awesome video
I don’t know much about the league unfortunately. I never got to play there. Thanks for watching our vids and commenting!
In boise they feed their players pretty good
That's awesome!
@@AntonelliBaseball I've been a umpire since high school and always love watching baseball. In 2016 though my luck wasn't with me on my way to umpire my first ball games of the season when bam was in a horrible wreck. 3 years later I'm still fighting to get back on the field to umpire games. Right now I'm our district evaluator and educating the young umpires on how to become a better umpire on the field. I would live to get ball players opinions if you don't mind? I can give you my contact info if that's ok with you.
