    I wonder if the geometry/physics/metallurgy of it all would allow for a Stinger barrel to be made in .44 Special?

  • @jamesclark6420
    @jamesclark6420 Год назад +1

    I see people asking for entirely aluminum versions of this gun. This has been done before. American Derringer Corporation, also out of Texas, made ultralight aluminum versions of their Model 1 in .38 and .44 Special back in the 1980s. The ADC guns were on the scene quite a long time before Bond, also very high quality, a little bit smaller and with somewhat more pleasing contours, but far more expensive. I've been in the firearms industry a long time, and these guns are seldom seen. Though they are still made. ADC originated the concept of the .45 Colt/.410 shotshell pistol, and was the first to introduce the .410 buckshot cartridge. At one point they even made guns chambered in rifle calibers like the .30-30, .223, and .45-70. Somewhat nicer and more refined than the Bond guns in appearance, but generally more than double the price with very limited availability. Not quite as heavily built either. I have two Bonds, including the Stinger 9mm, but no ADC derringers.

      @@Gunblastdotcom I've seen this, but haven't gotten to fire one. My Stinger is the all stainless steel 9mm version. Not at all unpleasant to fire, actually. I also have the .45 Colt/.410 2 1/2" version. Recoil is much more substantial, but still very manageable. The Bond guns are little chunks of steel. Very heavily built. The ultralight ADC guns used aluminum even for the barrels. Very rare. I've only ever seen one or two. Never got to fire one, but I believe they had a rather more limited working life. Surely setting off the .44 Special in a gun weighing only a few ounces would be distinctly unpleasant!

    I just picked one of these up in 38.
    Now I'm trying to find a good video that actually shows loading the gun. I can't for the life of me work that small lever to open up the action without serious fiddling. The darn thing needs a bigger shelf for better purchase. It goes most of the way and hangs up on something I cannot overcome one handed.
    I guess I'll keep looking for a better review that isn't so focused on pushing merch. I wouldn't have minded seeing you operating your trigger pull ga either. 4lbs? They had to have slicked that one up.

  • @Paelorian
    @Paelorian Год назад +1

    These are such low-pressure and low-recoil cartridges, and the single-shot action lockup is so strong, that I'd like to see them go lighter. However, a very small and lightweight gun with a tiny grip can have snappy recoil even with .38Spl or .22LR, so I appreciate this stainless option. Low recoil fun plinking.
    If they ever do a lighter .22, .25ACP, or .32 Long, maybe they could experiment with eliminating the steel apart from a very thin barrel liner. All aluminum and polymer. These are the lowest-pressure cartridges available and I think at least some of them could take the low-pressure cartridges in a design like this. If Bond could eliminate almost all of the steel and make it really lightweight, it might be fun in a weenie mousegun cartridge and attract shooters who otherwise would buy a North American Arms mini-revolver or even a Kel-Tec P-32.
    .32 Long is my favorite mousegun cartridge because it actually penetrates deep with a full wadcutter (I don't think it gives up much compared to a .38 Spl wadcutter), but even weaker (if necessary for a plastic-aluminum derringer) could still be fun. .22LR can still be effective with the right ammo (Federal Punch is ideal for self-defense), and less-penetrating cartridges like .32 Short are still effective on rodents and small game like rabbits.

    I can sort of see the point of the .38 Spl model here, since that cartridge is so versatile and common, and has a rim.
    But someone’s surely going to point out that a Taurus ultra lite snub revolver is almost exactly the same weight, is pocketable, shoots to same point of aim with each pull, costs only $60-$70 more, and holds *six* rounds of .38 Special. And I see that argument too.

    These derringers get a bad rap because they're often loaded with cartridges that I think are too powerful for the concept. The original Remington Model 95, from which all of these two barrel derringers are descendant, was a very popular firearm that was made for 69 years, well into the 1930s. One of the reasons it was popular was because it was easy to shoot. The .41 Short Rimfire cartridge it was chambered in generated around 100 foot pounds of energy. Certainly deadly, but fairly weak by modern standards. A comparable modern cartridge would be one of the lighter .38 Special 148 grain wadcutter loads, like the Fiocchi or Sellier & Bellot which should generate around 90 to 120 foot pounds of energy in the same barrel length. But a lot of people buy these things in .45 Colt generating somewhere around 450 foot pounds of energy and then wonder why they hate shooting it and can't hit anything. There's no reason these derringers can't be accurate. They're just often loaded with cartridges powerful enough it becomes very difficult to shoot them accurately. I think .38 special wadcutters make a great pairing with this kind of firearm and I'm happy to see you agree.

    Great video Boge! I have been wanting one. Can’t decide between 38 and 22. The 38 with wad cutters makes sense as expansion from a hollow point won’t happen from this short barrel anyway. With the 22, the new Federal Punch might be good as it’s designed for a short barrel defense round in 22.

    Correction: According to Bond Arms, the original (aluminum) and Rough Series (stainless) Stingers' barrels DO NOT interchange. I found out the hard way. They look like they would and should interchange. I had an original Stinger (aluminum) in 9mm. It was exceedingly painful for me to shoot. I nagged Bond for over a year to start selling us accessory barrels. They said they could not as everything they had went to production guns. Just short of a year, Bond agreed to send me a .380 barrel for my original Stinger if I would send them the 9mm back in even trade. This was nice of them to make a customer happy.
    As I waited on my .380 barrel to arrive, I found a Stinger Rough Series (stainless) in a local gun store and bought it. They only had one and it was in .380. I bought it and, as I had brought my original Stinger (aluminum) with me, I proceeded to swap barrels between the guns. The .380 barrel on the Rough/stainless fit onto the original/aluminum gun with no problem. Recoil on BOTH guns was pleasant and manageable. The. 380 barrels on the Rough/stainless tended to shoot rather far apart and way left on both guns for me, but was so easy compared to the 9mm.
    Next, I wanted to see if the 9mm barrel from the Original/aluminum gun was easier to shoot on the heavier stainless frame. Myself and store range personnel were unable to get the (identical looking) Allen screw for the stainless frame to catch the threads and attach the original barrel to the stainless frame. After much blood, sweat, and tears, a partial connection was made using the original (aluminum) Stinger barrel on the Rough(stainless) frame. It still would not secure with the Allen screw (stainless frame) all the way through, therefore I never got to fire the 9mm barrel in that gun. A couple or so weeks later, I was unable to get the Original Stinger barrel off of the Rough Series frame. I called Bond Arms and was told by their customer service rep that barrels between the two Stinger models are not supposed to interchange. At first, I was doubtful, but apparently this IS true.
    Bond sent a mailing label and I sent the Rough Series to them for them to undo the mess that I had made and they would take the original Stinger barrel off of the RS (stainless) frame.
    Bond graciously removed that barrel.
