SW has paneling or context hinting at plenty of content with zero text involved, just coupled with dense political dialogue in addition. Even the Rihan rant keys into his character. He's a Conjurer(generally highstrung), and his ability functions as a feedback loop; his analytical nature spawned the hatsu, but the hatsu encourages even more analysis and, to a degree, going alone. Obviously the page's composition is another story. It flows but is as lazy as possible. We'll have to see if the volume at least adds shading or an extra image. Too bad Mark won't cover manga material, since he's done some great analysis already and he'd probably have a lot of good points on SW so far.
I actually think the 1999 version improved upon the Kite scenes with what it added, yeah it makes the pacing a bit slower but the 1999 version had slow pacing with a bunch of its other episodes to begin with.
At that point of the story, Killua didn't think Netero is far above his level. He actually thought he could kill him if they continued. That changed after he learned Nen and met him again.

Killua is my favorite character in the series. I personally like the extreme contrast between his pure child like innocents combined with the fact that he is a trained assassin and kills people like its nothing. He goes from aww just a little kid, to murdered a room of threats, back to little kid.
This was a wonderful review! I feel like a lot of people fail to articulate what’s special about hunterxhunter- it’s kinda clouded in retrospect- but this take and format really did it for me. It’s so fun to appreciate it again through your eyes and remember the true emotional core.
One of my most favorite parts about the 2011 HxH show is how they utilize endings by melding them into the climax of the episode, and man, it gave me shivers when you did the exact same thing with my favorite ending theme.
I'm glad you are using clips from both series. I think the shot composition, direction and color choices in the '99 version blow the more modern adaptation away at times, so it's sad that it's often forgotten. This is especially noticeable in the tournament part of the hunter exam. There you get these dramatic colors and shadows, while the 2011 adaptation is just flat and bright in comparison. That and the music is just pure melodic 90's bliss akin to Rurouni Kenshin, Moomins, Inuyasha, YuYu Hakusho, One Piece and so on. I miss that style of soundtrack composition.
I think 2011 has significantly better music, and 99 has better visual art direction. I can't stress enough how amazing 2011's score is. It's kinda sad how much of 2011's tone was left out, however I am still glad that the tone was preserved in the chimera ant arc.
Yo, this was a really great review. Especially your interpretation of the characters and the way their traits and motivations are developed as the story unfolds. These are all the things that made me fall for this anime and for these kids. Really, really great review.

@@daddy_.rome0 don't get me wrong, I've watched the anime after reading the manga and I loved it, so much that I watched the anime twice and still the anime can't exactly capture the bizarre feeling that the manga gives you. @@strangething7379 ya, i was disappointed to hear that too.

@@ogsilencer2157 I completely agree with you, HxH is much more complex and tightly written, but you can't top charm and fun with just well crafted complexity.
@@ogsilencer2157 regardless, yu yu hakusho is the better series.
I know you guys have to be referring specifically to the YYH anime dub, don’t even deny
I see a couple other comments to this regard but I also really like that there is a large 1999 anime version representation in the background clips :) I love both versions (and the manga) but it all started with ep 1 of the 1999 version for me and I was hooked immediately. The nostalgic view of this first version is great!
Im so glad you're checking this series out. This is my fav. Also to the hunterxhunter community, for the love of god, please let him enjoy the way he wants to! gatekeeping how ppl enjoy it is just gonna steer them away from this incredible series.
Man such a relief to hear someone appreciate my favorite character, Gon!
Just change kurapika and leorio to killua from that gon saving the guy from drowning scene analysis and you got mark actually perfectly explaining the relationship of killua and gon
Well if you think about the chimera ant arc, where kurapika and leorio arent present, Gon didn't have them to help catch him from falling
@@ELFKNMAPO he did have killua who is a better friend to him than both of them and even he failed to stop gon so I don’t think they could’ve stopped him either
@@Toothpaste0000 killua is a kid. The other two are older and more mature.
I can’t even dub I feel like this cuddis is fenna describe the series very well he got this shit down fire.
@@sarthakarora3212 actually they are all teenagers if you remember correctly and haven’t u seen the chimera ant arc ? Killua is the one there for gon not the other two and killua is more physically stronger than them so he can stop gon and clean up the mess gon creates
That was literally his whole thing
I love that 1999 hunter x hunter is getting equal screen time

The atmosphere and mystery of the world feels so much better in the 99 show.
@@WhatAboutZoidberg 90s manga best fitted by 90s anime :)
It’s nice to see the 1999 anime. As much of a slow burn as it is, I connected with the characters way more
Honestly your interpretation of Gon is pretty amazing, and isn’t something I’ve seen explored by other reviewers or critics
2011 Only Watchers: "Wait, how does he already know about Kite?!"
it's a shame he's not watching 2011, that is the best version and he's spoiling the better version by watching the bad version and he will essentially miss out on a lot of parts that 2011 has that the original doesn't. And nobody cares about kite haha that's why they didn't put his part in 2011
@@GrowingDownUnder I loved Kite🥺
@@GrowingDownUnder Garbo take.
@@GrowingDownUnder he is not watching the anime, he is reading the manga.
@@GrowingDownUnder Even if you don't like Kite, Kite's introduction is vital to Gon's reasoning for his actions in the Neferpitou fight. In my opinion, at least
I finally got to this series and I'm glad you did read the manga instead of watching the modern version like too many do. And that scene with Gon and Hanzo was indeed hitting different.
Also I hope everything goes well for your channel.
Can't wait to see how Mark's Editor makes these reviews 100x better
I love you so much for ending the review with "Hunting for your dreams"
This video has singlehandedly convinced me to watch the anime on Netflix, Mark you’re too good at your job.
be warned that neflix doesn't have the anime in its entirety

@@JDubs1464 Get crunchyroll it has all the episodes
There's a fan remasterization of the 1999 version avalible on RUclips that covers the original show and the first series of OVAs. If you don't mind the 4:3 aspect ratio you could watch it, it's incredibly good and adapts the story better (aside from Greed Island, but we don't talk about the Greed Island OVAs in this house.)
@@straberies what wrong about GI ova ? I like it alot
Man, so awesome that you are taking this story in. It might be my favorite anime. I rarely read manga.
You are correct, the most recent anime, as good as it was, did leave out that crucial scene with Kite, which made the story very confusing for me later on.
I cannot wait to see your full thoughts as this goes on.
Who's ready for the Bart Simpson meme when Mark learns about Nen?
And when the Chimera Ants arc comes we can also expect the new "best arc of anime" from Not Mark
@@funsies8107 facts
I recently finished Hunter X Hunter.....and I have to say the Chimera ant arc was on another level. It's one of the most Beautifully written build-up stories to a boss fight that didn't take the usual, conventional approach that numerous other shonen anime take. Hunter X Hunter is a masterpiece that I hope will resume soon.
Remember Jesus Loves you repent for he is coming
you are bang on! just finished that arc as well but on the manga and I was close to tears
