How nobody pointed "Uvogin vs the whole Mafia" amazed me, it gave us for the first time what a Nen master can trully do, it gave me chills back then seeing that overwhelming power and thinking on "how kurapika plan to battle against that"
I personally vote for Gon and Killua vs Netero, it just gives you everything. Netero just being a house, refusing to use one arm and one leg, not attacking yet injuring Killua when he kicked him We got a character establishing moment for both Killua who is calculated enough to understand that they have no chance and Gon's resolve to perhaps not win but set himself up with smaller goals like forcing Netero to use his other hand. A lot if going on in that fight, we establish the gap in power between Killua and Gon back then, we establish them as characters, we establish how far and above Netero is beyond anyone and everyone else. We even get a look into Netero's character establishing him to be who he is. It's not a 'real' fight, but it's absolutely a real fight.
I love this “fight” as well. It’s enjoyable every time I watch it (watching as I type this funny enough) Not really a fight but another scene that’s highly underrated is when Netero hops out of his airship and basically forms a crater from his landing. Such a casual feat but crazy when you really think about it in context, as right after that a bunch of applicants died or got disqualified because they were scared to die from a fall which for Netero is like hopping out of bed
Exactly! This video was just underrated fights. Saying that it's a masterpiece because of these fights is presumptuous and redundant. HxH is a masterpiece REGARDLESS!! He completely mistitled this video.
@@wadewilson8011 you know what made me love hunter x hunter is it's flow of information. This shows how much of an experienced mangaka Sir Togashi is. This shows he very well knows about how this cruel world works. We get a glimpse of it in the Chimera Ant arc. Clash of ideologies in Yorknew City arc. And also the fabricated world of hxh in the first arcs and how it can turnover truly a magnificent writing. Masterpiece 🌟
Hisoka vs gotoh, fantastic fight, it is not complicated at all and it is a really quick fight, but it solidifies how lethal and unforgiving a nen fight is.
Gon vs Bat & Owl is pretty underrated. We see him dissect his opponents attack under utter darkness and confusion. Gon's fight with Knuckle is also pretty cool. Gon has very interesting fights. His fights are never about "Punching it out". He always fights at a disadvantage and manages to either win or minimize losses.
The way Gon fights are written is oddly similar to how Jotaro's fights are written in Jojo. Once he's in range, he has won, there's no real question about that. So instead the fight is just gonna be him and his opponent trying as hard as they can to position. Its just like chess. Or gungi, ig.
Hisoka vs Kastro is one of my favorites in the series. The short but thorough establishment of Kastro's strength throught Killua, the explanation as to why nen users don't just create hundreds of nen abilities but rather tend to stick to one and the fact that Hisoka just plays the entire fight for shits and giggles, while actually devising and executing a complex strategy flawlessly... it's also the first high level Nen fight using more than just the basics in the series.
@@aceclover758 Nah Feitan at his full strength could have crushed Zazan easily, he wasn't even back to full strength that's why it was challenge :) 😁✌🏻
Tonpa vs the prisoner where tonpa immediately gave up was funny, actually it was extremely funny but it was not a good fight. I consider it a fight because there was a winner and loser.
@@aceclover758 what? he stated he was rusty (saying he wasn’t nowhere near at full power) and at that he didn’t even use his most powerful move. furthermore, THAT attack he DID use wasn’t even at its fullest potential lol. pouf would get decimated. youpi would put up a pretty good fight WITH his transformations. and i feel like feitan and pitou might be on par with each other.
In the Hunter exam when Hisoka kills like 15 people in one arm swing while kurpika and leorio watch in the fog and the leorio knowing he's probably going to die but can't let the injustice go comes back to fight. I think that moment really made me love HxH. Hisoka went from evil Villian to nuanced character.
Razor Vs The Spiders is pretty underrated. Usually the spiders would just kill someone that confronted them without hesitation, but none of em dared to move cause of how strong he was.
That's also where we got the most scaling for Razor funny enough, a throwaway line on how he is responsible for facilitating all the emission nen on the Island, the whole island! So that means every time somebody uses one of the cards that uses emission nen, he is responsible for facilitating that, incredible.
It also helps that they had no idea what he was capable of, aside from strength. Razor recognized all of their strength and knew a fight with them would probably end up with both sides dying. But the troop didn't know the complexities behind the space they were in, and getting there already took calculated effort. As soon as they get on the island a "GM" appears?? An immediate alert system is in place apparently and they have no idea what else could happen. It isn't clear what Razor could actually do as an Island GM, and only ended up sending them away.. not even banning them.
@@lastskyy It's not the lack of training. 24/7 he's constantly emitting nen non-stop for the spell cards on Greed Island. So he probably never has access to all of his aura at any given time.
@@DavidNwokoye Razor probably set a condition the goes somewhere along the lines of being confined within Greed Island making him extremely OP. He is a prisoner after all
I would even say that Morel vs. Leol was also highly underrated. It perfectly displayed just how versatile and innovative Nen usage could be, as well as how ingenious top level Nen users are.
Morel is my favorite character for that exact reason. He is my idea of the perfect hunter. He's strong, versatile, caring, intuitive, etc from the moment he's introduced.
@@crowowlraven9971 I didn’t like morel when he was introduced. But man he grew on me. His fights are so ingenious plus his character it’s impossible to not like the man.
Shoot doesn't get as much focus as he arguably could have but I love the symbolism between his anxiety making him feel caged, which influences his nen ability and then after he overcomes that he gains the ability to fly, like a freed bird. I love when nen can be as much of a story telling tool as it can be a cool power system, that's what makes the system to attractive.
lol now that i think about it, yea to anyone who can't use Gyo, it would look like Shoot's just flying on nothing lol Unless of course the hands are solid manipulated objects..in which case...who's other two hands does he have lol unless only one hand is real, and the other 2 are just conjured copies of it
Here’s an unpopular opinion for you: Pariston VS Cheadle. That was a masterclass in manipulation and scheming that did a great job in highlighting just how scary Pariston could be if he wanted to.
I love that arc, Pariston became one of my favorites immediately, he only did what he did bc he enjoys the thrill of hunting and Cheadle never understood that
Uh, nice one! Given the fact that Hisoka is my very favorite character, it is not surprising my likability towards Pariston, as both have such a strong sense of Self in just doing their own thing, independent of any other sides around them. Pariston is fascinating to witness.
Genthryu simultaneously made me fall in love with the narrative and Nen as a power structure. Little flower and the bomber boogeyman legend that was also incorporated into his nen was absolutely genius for the arc it was in, and really opened up the complexity of the show to me. I was also tripping on acid when I read greed Island, so that probably played a part of it.
Gon VS Genthru might not be my favorite, but it really went out of its way to remind the audience who their main character is, how he views right and wrong, and what lengths he'll go to in order to win when that's at stake. It had this buildup and expectation that Gon was far out of his depth and that there was no way he takes this guy down on his own, and it ended in the most satisfying way possible. Literally the entire fight felt like Gon was on the backfoot, being forced to slowly lose against an opponent who was smarter, more brutal and just plain stronger, but Gon won by undermining what Genthru expected him to do and sacrificing both arms, the literal opposite of Genthru's own belief that you should be able to undermine Greed Island's rules and kill other people if it means victory, Gon sacrificed himself to do the same.
I actually have the opposite reaction; Genthru's Hatsu was incredibly situational, and incredibly short ranged, with a ridiculously long activation requirement; I was legitimately frustrated with how they handled those 3; Killua with his equivalent knowledge of nen, mixed with his insane assassination skills could have easily killed all 3 of them, and let's not even get into Bisky, who absolutely could have taken all 3 out, in one go, without being injured. I also refuse to believe that Gent's Ten/Ko would have been strong enough to even take a single Jajanken. If before even learning Nen at all, Gon was able to make Netero use his other arm, without knowing, just for funsies, I refuse to believe that fighting Genthru would have been more difficult then that.
You underestimate Genthru so much. He was strong enough that even a one star hunter was cautious against him Killua was still a newbie, he would not have taken on all three by himself Biscuit could’ve but they let Gon have his way. Genthru’s ability is far from situationational Guy can explode anything he grabs and his stronger bomb only takes two conditions he can do at anytime
The thing I love about hxh fights is that EACH (major) one is carefully thought and perfectly carried out with the display of genius plans from both the sides not just like, punching go brrr
These aren’t really fights but I really enjoyed watching the whole “mental/psychological battle” between Kurapika and Pakunoda. Also the part where gon and killua tried to escape from the troupe in the dark, only for Chrollo to be kidnapped next. And also killua and gon escaping from Nobunaga
I think the Togari vs Hisoka fight did include nen. They just didnt want to expose it that early in the show to give away the mystery. It's reasonable to consider that Togari used manipulation to control the blades but hisoka just used his bungee gum to catch it in the air perfectly and redirect it back to him. Togari could have been a nen user but just a poor one in comparison to Hisoka.
True that. And being an examiner doesn't mean he was a good fighter. We don't know the nature of the test Togari applied. Maybe it wasn't an interesting test (something like Menchi did) and that could be exactly why Hisoka attacked him.
Exactly. When you take into account the type of writer that Togashi is its safe to assume that Togari was in fact using Nen given what we learn later when its finally introduced officially. Togashi effectively put us into the shoes of a non- nen user since they wouldnt be able to tell wth is going on. It would just look like a normal fight.
Most underrated for me would be Chimera Ants vs Spiders in Meteor City. You become more aware of Kalluto’s tactics, get another use for Shalnark’s darts, see Feitan’s insane strength, Shizuku actually fights and see Bonolenov’s abilities and why he has the bandages.
Yeah I've heard fans, even those of the spiders heavily, call that "filler" and I'm just like...this is so good. Theyre primary reason is that they were formed there and some ant who made herself queen is morphing and destroying there home-area. They are all really ready to kill these evil ant beings regardless of there own morals, and by doing so actually help. This doesn't even feel like they are anything but dark AF when a few ask to be killed whom had been turned into chimera ants and they just straight up oblilerate all of them. A contrast to the end of the arc where we see a decent amount of them simply chilling with no intention to keep harming people or even being pretty damn helpful in there own ways, and with a will to live. I suppose I asked that question "whom would be fine with this, or want to live?" before this and many may have not, but upon rewatches I'm lost on what the fans are missing tbh.
I think Killua Vs Palm during the castle invasion is pretty underrated. It makes sense because it's sandwiched between some of the biggest moments in the arc, but I think it's great
Especially the way it ended. It seems like this super tense battle, Killua and Palm had contention even when they were on the same side, and then…Killua just breaks down crying, not because he’s losing this battle, but because he’s losing everything else while this battle goes down.
10:51, watch that scene between Hisoka v Togari again, it's really obvious in hindsight that Hisoka simply used bungee gum on his blades and hence why he was able to catch them so easily. We aren't able to use Gyo, but if you could, you'd see he just snapped them back into his hands and voila, a skill Togari spent a whole year mastering, countered by the properties of Rubber and Gum. (Sure it might be a bit retconny, but once you see it, you can never unsee it)
Even though at the time it was just a "magic trick", in 1999 he also covered up the shoulder wound (itself setting up Hisoka's predilection for getting himself injured in a fight for the hell of it) with Texture Surprise.
Them both using nen is the only real non plothole explaination for how Hisoka got injured in that skirmish - when explaining nen on the Black Whale Kurapika stated that the gulf in combat strength between a nen user and a non nen user is literally greater than that between an adult and a child.
@@Ebon_Sean Considering that a nen user can paralyze or kill a non user by just directing aura at them, it's far greater than that. More like an adult and a newborn baby.
I feel like Uvo vs Shadow Beasts is kinda slept on, I’d say it’s top 3 fights in the anime. The amount of momentum shifts in that small fight, mixed with the strategies both sides used, & how fast paced it is, combine to make an awesome fight that rly shows off Uvo’s power
A fight that always sticks in my head but I don't think does for many others is the Killua vs Ortho Siblings. Presenting Killua with a seemingly un-defeatable power once your are caught in it but he manages to develop his hatsu on the fly to provide what he needed to survive. I think it really shows the depths of the potential of Nen and highlights Killua's understanding of his own powers and how well suited they are to him.
That's what I said too! I'm kinda confused how it's sooo forgotten that even a video about underrated/forgotten fights forgets it lol I guess in that case it must be the ultimate underrated fight maybe 🤔
Of all the fights in HxH, Gon vs Pitou is something that strikes me as the pinnacle of the series and the most unique regarding themes. I still rewatch it over and over and come out feeling sad but also in awe with what Gon had done. Those cold eyes with an expressionless face after he dodges Pitou's first attack before kicking them high into the sky, that's a look from someone who will not second guess what they'll do.
@@m.zahiruddinmohhar6492 it's more of a game of the mind for Meruem and Komugi. The despair that Gon went through, the questioning of whose fault was it and the slight hope he had when Pitou conjured Doctor Blythe to only be let down when Pitou instead fixes its arm and threatens to kill Gon, this really pushed him to a state of no return. The cold eyes and emotionless face that Gon has in the fight against Pitou shows that there is no regret, no second thought, no other way to proceed for him. The tragedy of our main protagonist whom we have followed from the start really hits on the heartstrings, leaving a feeling of indecisiveness, not really knowing who was right in this fight.
Killua vs Genthru’s goon, where he first busts out the double 50kg yoyos is an underrated fight for sure. U get to see how Killua strategizes as well because he fakes a weakness when he blocks to lure his opponent in. Also it isn’t really a fight but Bisky KOing the one dude was hilarious, she s still talking to him but he’s passed out.
I think the most underrated fight was Leorio + Kurapika vs Hisoka during the second phase of the Hunter exam. It was the first time you really start rooting for Leorio in my opinion, and cemented Kurapika as an unwavering statue in his drive
Yeah Rammot is more of a plot device for Killua's growth but when they first fight him and Colt carries him away, Rammot's screaming still gives me goosebumps.
I think that my first real reaction to the true power scaling in the series was seeing uvogin stomp the shadow beasts. It displayed how even with a physical restriction a powerful veteran nen user can overcome situations by being creative and knowing how to fight. (Also the leech gave me the creeps so I enjoyed seeing him go). Really got me thinking that there are levels to this shit
An interpretation why Shoot covers his right eye in his fight with Youpi: Neurologically, your left and right brain hemispheres are in charge of different modes of thinking. Left brain is analytical, unemotional, calculating. Right brain is emotional, instinctual. The brain hemispheres are cross-connected to the rest of the body, so the left brain is connected to the right side of your body. Shoot covering his right eye dampens his left brain (at least symbolically), keeping him from getting into analysis paralysis.
Honestly, hunter x hunter is the only anime to make me sob, no, cry at all! The secene towards the end of the chimera ant arc with meruem and komugi is truly brilliant. It is masterfully written and honestly underated asf.
I absolutely adore how HXH can easily give us a fight between two prominent characters and CLEARLY show the winner while allowing both sides to showcase just how powerful they really are. Gon vs Hisoka and Netero vs Meruem are examples of that.
The most underrated fight was Gon VS BAT and OWL, it shows Gon growth and how smart he is when it comes to combat, he might be a simple straight forward guy but he is not dumb at all.
Shoot removed his doubts and fear by covering his eye, it's a very human like thing to do. Once you restrict your self from the privilege of full sight, your forcing your self to tap in instinctive reactions under desperate situations. Pluss, you can focus your one eye on the target without getting any distractions from your surroundings. Obviously, with both eyes you have more chances for survival, but with one eye you have the determination to succeed in what ever you are attempting to do even if it means killing your self in the process.
I love killuas yoyo fight against genthurus lacky. The fact that he never really felt at risk and was pretty much just played around the whole fight made it so satisfying
my favorite underrated part of hunter are the episodes with the old ship during the exam. i think that was only on the 1999 version, im not sure but that was beautifully written and drawn IMO.
I watched the 1999 anime before I read the manga, and I got really confused thinking a chapter or two had been lost somewhere because I had no idea it was filler. If I made youtube videos, I would surely highlight those episodes as the best filler in the series, possibly in all of anime; it's just that seamless and adds so much.
The most underrated fight that I see no one else talk about is probably Gotoh Vs. Hisoka. He was the first character in the series to make Hisoka struggle even for a little bit due to his Nen ability to shoot coins he enhanced with his aura and used his Bungee Gum (which, no I'm not saying it) against him. Though he didn't account for Hisoka to undo his power at his feet and used it on his back to fling out of there and fling Gotoh's coins back at him and use that and taunt him as a diversion to sneak in for a surprise kill. It shows just how adaptive Hisoka is and how other characters have got to keep up with him before he overwhelms them
1st id like to express that I Iove the channel(s) Bruv. IMO, incredibly well done and couldn’t be done unless the person is willing to put a lot of time, effort, appreciation and love for each series. 2nd, IMO, would love a Shoot vs Youpi analysis video from you! Totally understand the profit from business aspect plus the layer of “potential insignificance” from the characters, which IMO makes Togashi that much more of a genius. 1 of my fav fights as well for many reasons, especially how it begins: The gang gets teleported right in front of Youpi, at the same time as Grandpa Zoldyck literally bringing down the house (or Palace XD) with MF’n Nen Dragons. Injuring Shoot Instantly, distracting everyone else as well EXCEPT Gon. Gon Pivots his rage from Pitou, changes his opponent and doesn’t waver a step or moment as he rushes in, ALONE. Killua realizes first, then everyone else and Shoots fear inadvertently changes from fear to excitement? Some positive emotion, the catalyst to his transformation, proving Togashi is still genius for making Gon as his MC since he still found a way to leave his imprint on such an amazing fight. P.S. ur hilarious, “Zoldyck customer service is so off the charts it probably resides on the DC” lmfao
Gon vs Knuckle Henreigh and Knuckle let their guard down and it almost cost them. The mixture of fight speeds and advanced hand-to-hand techniques. The way Knuckle was ready to double down every time Gon thought he caught up.
I agree it was very good combat wise, but I think it showed us how much Gon had become better and stronger and also showing us that Gon is still week compared to the likes compared to people like Meruem or Netero. Also that Knuckle won makes it much better. I think from the fact that Gon lost shows us that he still has a long way to go and it was also essential for Killua's needle removing
Hisoka vs Kastro was awesome! I loved the way the paint Hisoka as a magician, and he uses magic to break his enemy's and the spectator's mind, and then giving a poethic death to Kastro.
Hisoka vs Gotoh has to be one of my favourites. On one hand you have the guy with fairly low aura, but lots of skill in what his ability does, on the other hand you have Hisoka, the fan favourite murder clown.
I’d definitely have to go with Morel, Knuckle, and Shoot Vs Youpi. The respect all individuals had for each other at the end of the fight was all sorts of beautiful.
I love all killua fights on the Chimera Ants arc because we see him using his intelligence and analytical skills instead of sheer force. I think it’s amazing to watch the explanations and his thoughts.
More like "Every fight with Youpi in it". Wonderfully specific, I'm sure, seeing as he only has one long ace fight across many combatants, but the fact it's this fight that restores a bit of Youpi's humanity while having the Ants being recognized by the Hunter Assoc. really makes it underrated af but heavily meaningful to the story.
Kite vs Pitou, I love how togashi depicted the underwhelming power of Pitou while also showing us a variety of abilities Kite can use to defeat even the most clever/powerful of hunters.
Not a traditional fight, but meruem vs komugi in the fictional game of Gungi is always fun to rewatch, the kings inner monologues about disrupting her rhythm is great writing
I was under the impression that the reason tonari talking about training the juggling blades meant that was a manipulation hatsu -- like he controlled using nen, which is why he thought hisoka would not be able to catch it.
That would be emission, the ability to cover something with Nen then launch said something over a distance, not sure manipulation can even be done with objects and if it could he wouldn't need to catch them (which he said took him months to do) Hilariously Hisoka is very well equipped to ruin the day for emitters who for some reason use objects instead of just opening portals in mid-air since assuming this was a Nen fight Hisoka probably bungee gum all the blades while Tonari was doing his pointless juggling. It can also explain the blades coming back since his aura is still active on the objects. It could also be the Tonari is a terrible awful transmuter for virtually the same effect though instead of launching the blades he is covering them with Aura in order to be able to catch and retract them, unlike Hisoka he can't do anything else so he needed to train throwing and catching them while his Aura is only responsible for the 'boomerang' effect. This better explains his confidence that Hisoka won't be able to catch them since if they are both transmuters and he doesn't understand the gap between them he wouldn't understand how Hisoka can possibly use his bungee-gum to attach his aura to the blades then instantly catch them, cause ... they are sharp! I think either way this puts Tonari as an absolute trash Nen user
@@blueplayer6197 , manipulator and emitter are similar in that they both emit nen. They differ in controlling nen, emitters control nen like what razor does, he gives commands or rules for his nen constructs. Manipulators on the other hand infuses their nen on objects just like what illumi and ironically, morel does. They can also set rules on said objects that has their nen. That's why it's a bit annoying to hear that morel is a transmuter when he is in fact a manipulator and his pipe is a very important part of his fights because it's the source of his smoke which is what morel controls and manipulates.
@@ernesthader1109Morel is a manipulator according to Togashi, he maniuplates smoke puppets, who said otherwise? Ponzu as well she manipulates bees, the way Tonari is using his blades is not manipulation, absolutely can't be. His knives are being thrown and caught, they aren't being magically mind controlled from a distance and he mentioned training to catch them, manipulation wouldn't need it, they'd float around like Morel's puppets doing their own thing. Razor is conjuring for his devils, his emission is his ball that he used to blow up the troupe's ship, possibly the teleportation as well and it's likely he then controls his devils not with manipulation but emission (since there's no medium, unlike morel's pipe), Leorio is an emitter as well with the whole long distance punch thing, the idea is launching something or launching aura and then having some control over it at a distance, control that's nothing like a manipulator's which has full control or basic command control, this is seen with razor being able to 'magically' move his ball after he already threw it. And is one way to have blades come back, just very poorly. And again the other way is transmuting, transmuters manipulate their own aura, that's how Killua makes his aura electric and how Hisoka makes his Aura stretch, so one could imagine a sticky aura attached to the thrown blades and used to pull them back, effectively being a strictly worse bungee gum. It's 100% not manipulation, he has no true control and he said so himself and every maniuplator be it as weak as a random ant soldier or as strong as illumi had full control over at least 1 target, so it's either transmutation (dragging them back after thrown, but not at a controlled speed so he has to learn to catch) or emission (using the blade's natural spinning momentum to slightly curve the trajectory back at himself, again requiring him to physically catch) Illumi's needles aren't what's being manipulated, manipulators usually need a 'medium', like Illumi's needles, shalnark's well.. needle... and remote control, Ponzu's beehive, yada yada, the object allows them despite not emitting their aura to still have connection to the target and use commands. Which is why ponzu can only command the bees with simple commands, Illumi isn't moving the needles on his own but rather the people attached to the needles and why the first comes first served rule shalnark mentions exists - because once a medium is stuck to a target it's already loaded with the maniuplator's aura. No maniuplator that I can remember emits their aura, they all use a medium which becomes an aura hub to anything that touches it - though many of them detach their target from the hub (bees, snakes, smoke puppets) but in exchange they are limited to simple commands Well Ponzu being a slight exception since she has a leaning towards emission which is why she can control her message bee a little further than the hive (probably, can't really explain where her emission affinity came from otherwise) Edit: actually woops, Melody is half an emitter half manipulator, she is using sound that she emits aura with to manipulate anyone who hears it (so her aura is now in their ears presumably), so that's a neat way to be an emitting manipulator, certainly better than a message sending bee
Rewatched the Genthru fight yesterday. Couple things: I could never take the Bombers seriously, and they seemed painfully weak but were always treated as being absurdly strong. Gon was told to follow the plan but had a "great idea." The idea? Getting one arm blown off and almost losing the other so he could kick Genthru once, before doing the plan anyway. I know it's Gon so he's a stubborn fool, but holy shit the narrative for the whole fight is quite bad.
Killua vs the poison-tailed ant, in the company of Gon and Kite. Kite emphasises that they mustn't hold back; it's interesting that (for the first time?) we see Killua 'flip his switch', and on command. If the ant was more of a threat it makes me wonder what more we'd see.
Underrated or meaningful fights: any fight with the leopard ant. We've learned to fear the Chimera ants at these points in the story, especially when they unlock nen, but this character shows that pure strength is not as important as training, strategy and mastery of the system. It builds up our human characters like Morel, but they also do wonders for Meruem and Pitou. They are indirectly made to seem smarter, more capable and deadlier by comparison.
It was also solid foreshadowing that despite the immense power of these beings, and however one interprets the conclusion, is that despite all that raw power, all the abilities and how young all the chimera ants were, they didn't have the training, nor did they have the technology humans do. In the end it almost makes humans look worse than them, which was a point meant to be made, but it is bone chilling. So when the leopard Ant Cheetu is involved, to him he has to win cause "all the speed." Then he makes an actually bad creation where Morel is just laying down lol, and you see how much inexperience with something so powerful as well as intelligence in itself. In a way the intelligence part is a good reason for not even close to all people being able to really tap into nen past anything basic on top of it.
Gon vs Genthru is one of my few underrated favorites, however all of Hisoka's fights during the Hunter exam arc specifically him vs the Examiner in trick tower just shows what a terrifying character Hisoka can be.
I think it’d be cool to see a video differentiating fights used as character development vs fights used as plot climaxes. They seem to be used distinctly differently in togashi’s writing style, I think he tends to enjoy the former type over the more often hyped climax fights that really just serve as entertainment spectacles/gambling matches. Even when we think a fight is all about just hype, we find out information later that packs so much development into a reviewing in highlight.
Idk if you would consider this a fight. But the competition on the blimp during the hunter’s exam between Netero vs Gon and Killua is a criminally underrated battle. It really set the tone for how far the two boys have to go to become Hunters. It also does an incredible job and teaching the viewer about how Gon and Killua approach challenges, which reveals an enormous amount about their characters.
The dodgeball game/Gon vs Razor! Not only was it a spectacle, but we got to see an expert nen user, a huge demonstration of Gon's raw power, and I think it's the first time we see the lengths Killua would go for his friend. Plus, we learned more about Ging.
To your first point, during the Gon vs Hisoka fight, my Apple Watch told me my heart rate was really high.. realized I was holding my breath for most of it
Youpi is just plain underrated (at least in the anime, reading through the manga now.) You get to experience his evolution as he fights like a half dozen people in a marathon rumble. And although parts of me still don't 100% understand him sparing them, it's an awesome moment to see him change. Plus it has Killua busting out godspeed; nuff said.
Hxh is a masterpiece indeed. Netero vs Pitou is also underrated. “Bad move little ant” was a flex together with the countdown and the sick naration. Such badass moment to start an epic war.
I can't imagine how much the Internet would explode if the DC arc got animated with Chrollo vs Hisoka fight for a long special episode. HxH has the potential to become the most popular series although I'm biased as it's my favorite by far.
2 underrated fights for me would have to be Hisoka vs Gotoh then Youpi vs Morel & Knuckle I was caught up on how many cards Hisoka was gonna throw, but he just ended up jumping down and beheading Gotoh (if my memory is right) Then the countdown of the smoke clones ending with Morel calling Youpi an idiot & Knuckle finally punching him after raging was my favorite moment in HxH
Most underrated fight is Killua vs Bodoro. Poor Bodoro made it all the way to the final stage of the hunter exam just to die at the very end. Such tragic.
Not necessarily a "fight", but when Netero challenges Gon and Killua to get the ball for their licenses. And then by then end you realize this old man was just flexing the whole time
I have always felt that the reason there was no visually portrayed nen aura on characters in the earlier episodes is because togashi wanted us to pick up the ability to see it for ourselves at the same pace as gon and killua. As if we the viewers still needed to undergo our own training of gyo
Killua pulling the needle and realizing that he is going to have to push himself past what he sees as even the smallest threat in order to improve parallels him knocking out gon and running from pitu like he still knows that illumi’s strategy has merit but doesn’t let it define him
Morel vs Lionel was awesome, and really Morel’s fights 1 on 1 were all amazing since he had one of the most versatile abilities and thought on his feet all the time.
Not really a normal fight but I love the battle between Pariston and Cheadle. Such a fantastic and in depth political battle only for it to teach us so much about the world of HxH we had not known before, in such a simple yet short arc.
HxH was my cure for Naruto and Bleach fatigue. I caught a glimpse of HxH 2011 during its run, but I didn't watch it until it almost fully wrapped up in 2014. I also knew of the 1999 version but never watched it. So I ended up giving it a shot and fully fell in love with it because it did things I always wished anime like Naruto and Bleach would do. I never bought into the Naruto X Sasuke relationship while Gon and Killua was an amazingly well built up friendship. I totally bought those 2 as friends together. That's just 1 example. Another thing that was great was the lack of filler and it simply being well written. HxH does things no other anime does. It subverts expectations in a GOOD way. Just subverting isn't enough, it has to be well written of course and Togashi is a true master of his art. Character motivations in a lot of shounen I've watched often was shaking all over the place while with HxH it always felt watertight. It also revealed to me how a series like Naruto basically copied a lot from HxH. The HxH manga came before the Naruto manga started. There's a lot of clear inspiration but all the things Kishimoto took was mostly done worse. And after I was done with HxH there was a Togashi hole in my soul so I finally watched Yu Yu Hakusho and discovered the Bleach copied a lot from it as well (and Naruto too lol). Idk if I would recommend HxH to a newcommer into anime though. For me, it really resonated with me because of how done I was with how badly Naruto and Bleach were done. I'd surely recommend it to people who are meh about Naruto/Bleach/Dragon Ball and want better storytelling.
Killua VS Ikalgo and the leol gang, I'm currently reading through the manga for the first time now so I haven't reached this point to see how it was originally but MAN in the anime this confrontation goes so hard. Killua counter assassinations these guys and completely dismantles their group in what would've felt like the blink of an eye if you were to actually witness it but since its slowed down you get to see every detail. It kind of puts into perspective how OP Killua is and always was from his introduction onward. He is essentially a child slaying monsters at this point, Learning nen has taken him far beyond the level of a young assassin making big bucks off of shady tactics.
Hisoka vs Gotoh for me has the exact same effect on me as Togari vs Hisoka many arcs prior. This genuine feeling of invincibility of hisoka being used to induce pure fear. Can't run. Can't hide. Won't win the fight. It always seems like Hisoka is so massively overconfident that he has to meet his maker some day. Which happened against chrollo finally So Hisoka vs Gotoh was the perfect build up for the best fight in the whole manga
Leorio vs. Hisoka, not only was it Leorio's first badass moment who up til then was seen just as the loud mouth joke protagonist, but Hisoka said just like gon Leorio passed his test meaning Hisoka pretty much guaranteed that Leorio is going to become a strong fighter one day.
Though unrelated, the most difficult to deal with nen types from most to least difficult: Specialist>Conjurer>Transmuter>Manipulator>Emitter>Enhancer ex: Corollo>Kurapica>Hisoka>Illumi>Knuckle>Uvogin
Zeho vs Bopobo I myself don't think it was an epic fight but it was informative it showed how incompetent some could be in regards to aura manipulation as if I recall correctly Zeho struggled to activate his ren. I also liked Cheetu vs Morel for a similar reason. I liked Leol vs Morel because they were simply cool, how they shared tastes in music. How Leol was surfing and creating great waves. We also got to see that Morel could create a good raft with his Deep Purple as well as his immense lung capacity that helped him survive the whirlpool. I also like Gon vs Knuckle it just shows how kind Knuckle is for helping Gon grow so much especially saving APR for the last day so Gon could use his nen al those days prior. Also how he announces the direction of his attacks so Gon can properly defend himself. Knuckle is just such a softy.
Killua vs the criminal with strong hands. We already knew to a degree how good or skilled Killua is but them hyping up the killer that could literally crush pieces out of human bodies with pure hand strength only to have Killua basically one shot him, is a stroke of genius. They made a fan favorite and a new "power" level all in one fight.
for me the best fight is kurapika vs uvogin... they could've removed every part of the fight and have it conclude off screen but the fact that he brought a shovel and then burried uvo afterwards is just cold as hell
Rammot vs Killua was underrated because it directly showcases Killua's improvement relative to the Troupe, who fought comparable ants. He then goes on to waste a whole squadron with several of those ants mixed in, while exhausted from 3 days of constant fighting, and without even using a nen ability.
I have watched HxH twice through 1999 version and three times in 2011 version and the more I watch it the more flaws I see in it- however the more I think about the CONCEPTS behind the scenes- the behind the scenes thought process to craft these scenes- the reason behind everything that happens- the more respect I have for the writing! Subconsciously I and other fans know we love this for it's concepts because this anime doesnt have the best fight scenes, doesnt progress in the best way, but its it's own series and it is still (and forever will be) important.
To me Hisoka vs togari can be explained by nen being used but not seen yet. Togari could be enhancing the blades or they could be conjured, it doesn’t matter to us at the time so it isn’t spot lighted. And for Hisoka, I just assumed he attached some bungee gum to the weapons before they ever left Togari’s hands or even hand them on his own hands.. either way the message got explained that hisoka was more skilled than Togari without spoiling the secret of nen. Now I know that’s not perfect and the real explaination would be that nen wasn’t a thing yet, but I don’t thing it is too hard to make that fit
Killua x A bunch of ants The precisely micro moves of Killua to disarm and kill every insect while he is beeing threatened by every sides is amazing. + the animation was damn good
The watershed fight in HxH is Uvogin vs the shadow beasts. Here you have an extremely DBZ type of character that fights more intelligently than all DBZ characters combined. It really goes on to show that HxH is a new type of beast.
Morel and pouf is my favorite. One of the best fight in hxh with a manipulator. He almost won that one said so by pouf himself as he said that when he dispersed to tiny pieces, he has a limit on how small he can go. His original body can't so small that can pass through morel's smoke jail and in that form, morel can squish him like a literal bug. Morel lost in the mind games because he wants to protect his team against pouf's dispersed body and he never knew that if he killed the original all the other ones will be destroyed as well.
How nobody pointed "Uvogin vs the whole Mafia" amazed me, it gave us for the first time what a Nen master can trully do, it gave me chills back then seeing that overwhelming power and thinking on "how kurapika plan to battle against that"
I was about to mention that fight . It was lit .
I think it’s a highly rated fight from one of the best arcs, could be why
was great for sure
I remember thinking how tf is kurapika going to beat him!?
Also made it even more shocking when Kurapika completely dominated him
I personally vote for Gon and Killua vs Netero, it just gives you everything.
Netero just being a house, refusing to use one arm and one leg, not attacking yet injuring Killua when he kicked him
We got a character establishing moment for both Killua who is calculated enough to understand that they have no chance and Gon's resolve to perhaps not win but set himself up with smaller goals like forcing Netero to use his other hand.
It’s enjoyable every time I watch it (watching as I type this funny enough)
Not really a fight but another scene that’s highly underrated is when Netero hops out of his airship and basically forms a crater from his landing. Such a casual feat but crazy when you really think about it in context, as right after that a bunch of applicants died or got disqualified because they were scared to die from a fall which for Netero is like hopping out of bed
I gotta agree with Gon vs Genthru. It was so underrated. And ofc HxH is a masterpiece even without any fights
I say it underrated cause it showed gon selfish/childish nature tht imo foreshadowed gon acting the way he did in the chimera arc
So true Gon v Genthru was awesome
Bruh i know HxH is a masterpiece but still togashi needs to put fighting scenes! More actions! Then the haters will nothing to say
Hisoka vs gotoh, fantastic fight, it is not complicated at all and it is a really quick fight, but it solidifies how lethal and unforgiving a nen fight is.
My thoughts exactly, it also shows us how abilities themselves aren't as important as how they're used
I still don't understand why it even happened, like was killed for nothing
Agreed, fantastic, Hisoka sometimes doesn't play even when he's 'playing'
@@westonprice6272 now that you are mentioning it i don't remember why, was he following them, i will look for it again.
@@TheRougeAnarchist exactly.
I love that fight.
@@maagic2031 aptly put! Great comparisons tbh
I agree Gon's fights are always interesting and awesome
Gon's fights are always the most captivating, immersive, and interesting to watch
Feitan vs. Zazan! Such an amazing fight! But then, there isn't a bad fight in HXH.
I like that fight too because it was a challenge for Feitan
But it also shows how he would lose 1v1 to a royal guard
@@aceclover758 Nah Feitan at his full strength could have crushed Zazan easily, he wasn't even back to full strength that's why it was challenge :) 😁✌🏻
Tonpa vs the prisoner where tonpa immediately gave up was funny, actually it was extremely funny but it was not a good fight. I consider it a fight because there was a winner and loser.
One of the worse fights idk what you mean
Still crazy how Razor is only a great level nen user. Imagine how powerful he would be if he powered up by going on some training?
I love when nen can be as much of a story telling tool as it can be a cool power system, that's what makes the system to attractive.
lol now that i think about it, yea to anyone who can't use Gyo, it would look like Shoot's just flying on nothing lol Unless of course the hands are solid manipulated objects..in which case...who's other two hands does he have lol unless only one hand is real, and the other 2 are just conjured copies of it
Well said I concur
When shoot took so much damage and he landed that first touch was epic
Here’s an unpopular opinion for you: Pariston VS Cheadle.
That was a masterclass in manipulation and scheming that did a great job in highlighting just how scary Pariston could be if he wanted to.
Completely agree
very true no one comes close to him in terms of manipulation
He was strong enough that even a one star hunter was cautious against him
Killua was still a newbie, he would not have taken on all three by himself
Biscuit could’ve but they let Gon have his way.
Genthru’s ability is far from situationational
Guy can explode anything he grabs and his stronger bomb only takes two conditions he can do at anytime
But genthy stinky tho
Well said
@@aceclover758 thank you!!!
The thing I love about hxh fights is that EACH (major) one is carefully thought and perfectly carried out with the display of genius plans from both the sides not just like, punching go brrr
exactly but no hates for those animes since i also fell with them but yeah hxh is far way better
@@SolidSnake240 👏👏👏👏👏
(Sure it might be a bit retconny, but once you see it, you can never unsee it)
I think they were using nen, but we as viewers didn't learn about it hence we can't see it.
@@Nucleotron Facts. Its actually genius when you think about it.
YES! This one just gets forgotten, but both it and the fight with Ikalgo just before are great.
Seriously i get chill to this day every time I watch that moment.
That I have to agree on
It's the most DBZ-esque and least strategical fight of the series lmao.
Nah. Meruem vs Komugi was the best fight. It hits straight to the kokoro.
Honestly all the GI fights are pretty great imo
I think the most underrated fight was Leorio + Kurapika vs Hisoka during the second phase of the Hunter exam. It was the first time you really start rooting for Leorio in my opinion, and cemented Kurapika as an unwavering statue in his drive
Yeah Rammot is more of a plot device for Killua's growth but when they first fight him and Colt carries him away, Rammot's screaming still gives me goosebumps.
I recommended HxH to someone yesterday, they scoffed at me so I scoffed at them.
I recommend HxH to everyone, even random people I see dressed in anime clothing
Did you win the scoffoff thought?
Good one.
That was a good fight

Killua vs. the dart players. It exemplifies how non-standard nen battles can be and shows us a glimpse into killua developing his abilities.
1 of my fav fights as well for many reasons, especially how it begins:
The gang gets teleported right in front of Youpi, at the same time as Grandpa Zoldyck literally bringing down the house (or Palace XD) with MF’n Nen Dragons.
Gon vs Knuckle
Henreigh and Knuckle let their guard down and it almost cost them.
Hisoka vs Gotoh. The back and forth mental olympics perfectly highlight the complexity of nen combat
I love all killua fights on the Chimera Ants arc because we see him using his intelligence and analytical skills instead of sheer force. I think it’s amazing to watch the explanations and his thoughts.
More like "Every fight with Youpi in it". Wonderfully specific, I'm sure, seeing as he only has one long ace fight across many combatants, but the fact it's this fight that restores a bit of Youpi's humanity while having the Ants being recognized by the Hunter Assoc. really makes it underrated af but heavily meaningful to the story.
meruem vs. radiation-chan tugged on the old heart strings
Killua vs that one prisoner at the HxH exam tower. That moment when he held his heart and just left it there was insane.
Pitou vs Kite, set the power level of both sides for the chimera ants arc. Set the tone for the whole arc for the protagonists.
Kite rolling a 0 was a masterpiece, all those chimera ants heads lopped off was chilling.
Kite vs Pitou, I love how togashi depicted the underwhelming power of Pitou while also showing us a variety of abilities Kite can use to defeat even the most clever/powerful of hunters.
how does one misspeak so badly 😭
The Genthru fight also foreshadows how batshit crazy Gon can get.
Not a traditional fight, but meruem vs komugi in the fictional game of Gungi is always fun to rewatch, the kings inner monologues about disrupting her rhythm is great writing
I was thinking of mentioning this out of pure humor. But it turns out that Komugi has her life at stake every time they play.
hisoka vs kastro was so good and so underrated
I was under the impression that the reason tonari talking about training the juggling blades meant that was a manipulation hatsu -- like he controlled using nen, which is why he thought hisoka would not be able to catch it.
That would be emission, the ability to cover something with Nen then launch said something over a distance, not sure manipulation can even be done with objects and if it could he wouldn't need to catch them (which he said took him months to do)
Hilariously Hisoka is very well equipped to ruin the day for emitters who for some reason use objects instead of just opening portals in mid-air since assuming this was a Nen fight Hisoka probably bungee gum all the blades while Tonari was doing his pointless juggling.
It's 100% not manipulation, he has no true control and he said so himself and every maniuplator be it as weak as a random ant soldier or as strong as illumi had full control over at least 1 target, so it's either transmutation (dragging them back after thrown, but not at a controlled speed so he has to learn to catch) or emission (using the blade's natural spinning momentum to slightly curve the trajectory back at himself, again requiring him to physically catch)
Illumi's needles aren't what's being manipulated, manipulators usually need a 'medium', like Illumi's needles, shalnark's well.. needle... and remote control, Ponzu's beehive, yada yada, the object allows them despite not emitting their aura to still have connection to the target and use commands.
Which is why ponzu can only command the bees with simple commands, Illumi isn't moving the needles on his own but rather the people attached to the needles and why the first comes first served rule shalnark mentions exists - because once a medium is stuck to a target it's already loaded with the maniuplator's aura.
No maniuplator that I can remember emits their aura, they all use a medium which becomes an aura hub to anything that touches it - though many of them detach their target from the hub (bees, snakes, smoke puppets) but in exchange they are limited to simple commands
Well Ponzu being a slight exception since she has a leaning towards emission which is why she can control her message bee a little further than the hive (probably, can't really explain where her emission affinity came from otherwise)
Edit: actually woops, Melody is half an emitter half manipulator, she is using sound that she emits aura with to manipulate anyone who hears it (so her aura is now in their ears presumably), so that's a neat way to be an emitting manipulator, certainly better than a message sending bee
Togashi comes back after so many years and gives one of the BEST villain origin stories ! GOAT !
You mean Cheetu? He's a moron... but he's a dangerous moron. ;)
Uvogin vs kurapika vs definitely the best showcase at that point of nen abilities and an actual nen battle
Gon vs Genthru is one of my few underrated favorites, however all of Hisoka's fights during the Hunter exam arc specifically him vs the Examiner in trick tower just shows what a terrifying character Hisoka can be.
The shift in overall tone at the beginning of the chimera ant arc made me fall in love with hxh. Masterful shit. Bodies.
To your first point, during the Gon vs Hisoka fight, my Apple Watch told me my heart rate was really high.. realized I was holding my breath for most of it
i think the genthru fight is also underrated due to the fact that we have the epic dodgeball game just a few episodes before it.
One of the most unrelated moment is in the hotel when the lights go out that whole scene is fantastic
Gon is the perfext example of a "Human Being " vs a "Person"
I can't imagine how much the Internet would explode if the DC arc got animated with Chrollo vs Hisoka fight for a long special episode. HxH has the potential to become the most popular series although I'm biased as it's my favorite by far.
Meruem vs Netero
It's perfect. Truly a masterpiece.
2 underrated fights for me would have to be Hisoka vs Gotoh then Youpi vs Morel & Knuckle
I was caught up on how many cards Hisoka was gonna throw, but he just ended up jumping down and beheading Gotoh (if my memory is right)
Then the countdown of the smoke clones ending with Morel calling Youpi an idiot & Knuckle finally punching him after raging was my favorite moment in HxH
0:41 Liam revealing his own hatsu
Which happened against chrollo finally
So Hisoka vs Gotoh was the perfect build up for the best fight in the whole manga
Leorio vs. Hisoka, not only was it Leorio's first badass moment who up til then was seen just as the loud mouth joke protagonist, but Hisoka said just like gon Leorio passed his test meaning Hisoka pretty much guaranteed that Leorio is going to become a strong fighter one day.
So true. That bungee gum save in the one movie was a brilliant show of this too. It's demented and well followed up on.
Though unrelated, the most difficult to deal with nen types from most to least difficult:
Specialist>Conjurer>Transmuter>Manipulator>Emitter>Enhancer
ex: Corollo>Kurapica>Hisoka>Illumi>Knuckle>Uvogin
A very early demonstration of Nen usage was when Netero presumably used Ren to get Gon and Killua's attention on the ship before phase 3.
for me the best fight is kurapika vs uvogin... they could've removed every part of the fight and have it conclude off screen but the fact that he brought a shovel and then burried uvo afterwards is just cold as hell
“We dedicate this requiem to you” is prob my favorite scene in HxH
Killua x A bunch of ants
The precisely micro moves of Killua to disarm and kill every insect while he is beeing threatened by every sides is amazing.
+ the animation was damn good
I gotta say, Shoot really deserves more credit, and I really need him to appear again
The watershed fight in HxH is Uvogin vs the shadow beasts.
Here you have an extremely DBZ type of character that fights more intelligently than all DBZ characters combined.
It really goes on to show that HxH is a new type of beast.
uvogin's requiem wasn't much of a fight but it managed to introduce most of the spider's ability
I love how you changed the lightning for Hisoka and Gon
Morel and pouf is my favorite. One of the best fight in hxh with a manipulator. He almost won that one said so by pouf himself as he said that when he dispersed to tiny pieces, he has a limit on how small he can go. His original body can't so small that can pass through morel's smoke jail and in that form, morel can squish him like a literal bug. Morel lost in the mind games because he wants to protect his team against pouf's dispersed body and he never knew that if he killed the original all the other ones will be destroyed as well.
